Hi what a refreshing video, I have just got back into fly fishing I use to it with my dad in my teens and now my daughter wanted to go fishing I had fond memories with my dad so said we will do fly fishing, I bought secondhand 9ft 6wt rod that came with a rimfly reel just bought some new line for it and some research on the net and came across your vid I didn't thought you could fly fish for carp I always thought you needed all the gear love the video as inspired me 👍👍👍
Great video. I'm doing this at my local fishery in Sussex. One thing I'm finding is that I'm foul hooking a lot more fish than with conventional carp tactics. I figured out how to prevent this recently when fishing in amongst a cloud of dog biscuits in the margins. I noticed my fly sinking from the surface and rising again with no obvious sign of a fish sipping it from below. I also got a lot of hook ups which came off and then I reeled in a single scale, as you did. I believe that the usual ~10ft trout leader is too long and because I'm using a heavier than normal leader it is sinking. The fish brush against it just below the surface and if it drags around their fins then the fly gets dragged under and can hook into either their fins or bodies. I've now dropped my leader length down to 2 or 3 ft and make sure that its well greased and now I'm getting almost all hook ups in the mouth.
good adaptation. The leader I use is Gardner Zig Rig line... about 8lb BS. About a 3 foot length tied to a 9wt line and rod....have caught literally hundreds of carp on fly with this method.
I used to take fly fishing lessons in summers in Vermont at Orvis they would be quite impressed to see fly fishing for carp. Neat idea, too bad he cannot build a closed pond for small mouth bass or crappie they are great on flyrod and tiny poppers.
Excellent Graeme wow I have to do this. I can’t carry all the gear like I use to and also new way of fishing and even more fun. Also wished I had that fishery or a similar one near me. He’s got it spot on and sensible rules too.
+TAFishing I have always wondered why most people use a right hand real when they are right handed, This is not the case with fly fishing . I have been on deep sea charters where they look at you strangely after requesting a left hand reel. Easy done with an egg beater but have been wanting a left hand multiplier for beach casting , The well stocked shop didnt even know if you could get them in Australia. I have found you can get them . Lost in a world where you think rod control and strength of arm for right handers would reign , Oh no ,
Great video guys been waiting a while for a video like this I've been fly fishing for carp for two years now it's a great method but not a lot of other anglers like it where I fish but what ever catches that's all that matters big fan and great work
another great video, but get that bloody ratchet off, at 15 mins in you were drowning out the kingfisher whistling in the background, more people are catching on to this excellent methord of carp fishing :)
Graeme you are a star. Loved the video did it years ago then got banned cos the bivvy brigade objected cos I was catching more than them. Good point about the rod angles Alan T
Great video once again, could you please tell me the best flies to use on the river Ebro, as fishing there next week for the big Cats but I would love to catch a big carp on the fly.All the best Pete.
Best way to catch'em off the top. Great video. Do you soak your mixers or use straight from the bag as they looked soft. Also do you use the top brand mixers or supermarket own? TAF
+LP3Cruisesandfishing my favourite bait for carp is corn as nearly all of them have been on fake corn over a small handfull of corn but luncheon is also very effective
+Andrew Torphu It would be suitable for light tackle fishing and bigger fish too, often I use a rod with a casting weight of 10-35g and I love it for small and big species of fish
+MrUrban55555 Really? I highly doubt that... In some waters and/or fisheries maybe, but I can't imagine there being a species specific national law targeting a single sport fishing technique, just seems weird. What country is it? :P
+eldsprutandedrake im from slovenia and from my local area its not allowed and i never seen someone doing it. we also have different tickets for each tipe of fishing: spinning, bottom and float, and ther is no ticket for surface fishing
PLUNGEE this is a shame mate. Who decides these rules, do you wonder if these people even fish. Some rules here in England are like why what is the problem with that. In England tho it’s more the fishery owners rules. One example I am not lying as I have no need to lie. I joined a lake It has a no fishing for carp until you have been a member for seven years. Bloody hell most baits catch carp. Lol
never really seen the point of fly fishing when you can just use a spinning rod that does everything and better, but either way still intersting video to watch
+danysniper22 Some advantages and some drawbacks, don't think it's blatantly worse than spin fishing though. But it's just for fun anyway, it's sport fishing, I don't fly fish at all really, but I have tried it and it is totally different. The whole "This technique is better"-discussion with the two only metrics being how big/many fish you get and what is "real" fishing is always so weird. People have their own opinions on when it stops being a sport and when it starts just being cheating to get big fish. Some think you should only use a fly rod and really be a purist, some think it's okay with whatever rod/bait, fishing from the shore vs boat is also a thing. Then depth-finders are cheating to some, depth-finders where you can see the fish and see your lure is also no longer sport fishing to some other people etc. There really are no fact there, just people with opinions ^^ Also, if it's really just fish in the food sense you are after, you can really get quite a lot of it from a random supermarket for the money you spend on fishing gear anyway :P
i agree with that, i see it more as a "fun" and different techique for sport either way, personally i dont like the extra hassle and just like to keep it simple because with a spinning rod you can do anything, float, all different kinds of lures, bottom fishing etc etc and dont need a giant clearing for casting space haha
going to try this this summer cant wait

I regularly go to my local course ponds to fly fish for carp. Its brilliant fun

Really enjoyed this one,I was out yesterday in the sun with bread on the top and did really well apart from the sunburn had a awesome day.

Oh no ,
+john smith Try writing with your left hand that is how awkward it feels to me.
***** Apart from Australians .Its a strange thing here but true,
+Andi Burton You are considered a lefty with a left hand reel here so I just play along with that , any Aussie would say the same
Awesome! Thanks for the early preview! I will definitely be doing this this Summer
+Muskie No worries! Benefit of being a Patron ;) Thank you for the support on our Patreon!
Great video guys been waiting a while for a video like this I've been fly fishing for carp for two years now it's a great method but not a lot of other anglers like it where I fish but what ever catches that's all that matters big fan and great work
you can also do this with UL/L spinning/bc gear ;)
its ridiculously funny to fight carp with that setup
If you enjoy doing it that's all that matters it's all about have fun 👍
Great video as always
will you do some more perch fishing videos? love them!
+Daftboy89 Yes we will do, more towards September time
another great video, but get that bloody ratchet off, at 15 mins in you were drowning out the kingfisher whistling in the background, more people are catching on to this excellent methord of carp fishing :)

guys amazing video as always can u do some carp on the feeder please :)
What weight line do you suggest ? Great vid !
#7/8 for big carp
What weight rod and line do you use for carp
Probably 7/8 weight outfits are what we use,but go heavier if you are targeting twenty pounders.
Going for carp tommorow what is best corn or meat
+LP3Cruisesandfishing in lakes i prefer corn,in rivers i use worms or maggots
+LP3Cruisesandfishing my favourite bait for carp is corn as nearly all of them have been on fake corn over a small handfull of corn but luncheon is also very effective
I've always wanted to catch a carp on a fly. if it's anything like catching a trout I'll be happy ☺☺
+MishzZ101 I switched to Carp on the fly last year it's arm wrenchingly good takes are very visual my PB is 14.5Ilb
+Len Morris nice one m8. yeah I'll defiantly give it a go next time I go.
got a shimano feeder as a present, would this be suitable for lrf?
+Andrew Torphu What is the casting weight?
+TAFishing
casting weight is 20gr.
haven't had much luck in the past, hoping to use tips from your videos!
+Andrew Torphu It would be suitable for light tackle fishing and bigger fish too, often I use a rod with a casting weight of 10-35g and I love it for small and big species of fish
+TAFishing thank you for reply gonna try it off the rocks, thanjs again mate, keep up the great work
Just put on a hook with bread and bait bands and you catch more carp than a fly.
That’s a hybrid bream /carp
too bad that surface fishing for carp is banned in my cuntry
Cuntry😂
