I hope this helps someone else. This video got me most of the way there, but needed an adjustment. 10:53 I got rid of that last bit by pre-loading the gear you put on the motor, then adjusting a little until the motor slid in. The pre-loading worked great. I ran into a problem with the motor actually running. Solved by 1. opening rubber plug on motor cover that the power wires go through. Note: leave plug on wires, just slide it up them. 2. Pulling pin to disconnect motor control and power board. 3. Remove motor control board. 4. Install motor control board to the motor and set in housing base guides. Note: motor will have a firm connection to the power output pins on the control board. 5. Put motor cover back on and confirm motor control board connector is in line with hole. 6. Re-insert connector through hole and connect to control board. 7. Replace rubber plug (weather seal). Make sure you align the connector pin as well as the wires. 8. Continue with remainder of reassembly. I found that without these steps, the motor control board was not making correct power contact with the motor and I would just get a click rather than sufficient torque to fold the mirrors.
Everyone this is the #1 comment here. I had to do everything in this video twice, but second time I did the motor board like this. Now with new plastic gear and assembled this way I’ve got a power folding mirror with no slop in it.
Very useful. Had the exact same problem. Have just had it unplugged for years now. Took it apart as you showed and I just ended up unplugging the folding motor. Don't care too much about that feature, just wanted to be able to adjust the mirror from the inside controls. Put it back together and the adjustment aspect works fine, and no more constant motor noise. Thanks!
Thanks Dustin, I just did exactly step by step disassembling my Toyota's passenger mirror following your video. I would give up a few times if you didn't post this video. I think I screwed up a little bit, because the motor doesn't work anymore (it did, but it was spinning constantly), but now at least it's quiet, and positioning still works! BIG Thanks Again!!!
Hello Dustin, You made one awesome video here ! ! ! It helped me so much. My mirror on my 2005 Toyota Sequoia Limited was heated and a retract. I bought the Sequoia last August and the mirror did not work at all. Nothing. Pushing the mirror forward the wind would move it back just enough so you could not see behind you but see the side of the cab. I took the mirror apart after watching your video, and JB Welded and clamped the green gear that had broken in half. Also filled in the holes on the sides with JB Weld to strengthen the gear like I found out later the other guy did. I even used a toothpick. I couldn't figure out how you said at 9:00 because of the wobbling you didn't have it preloaded. I couldn't figure out what you did to preload it and mine still wobbles a little the same as before. After putting it back together, the mirror adjustment works fine but the power fold does not work. Is there a different fold motor in there also? Maybe if I could get it preloaded like you said, maybe the fold would also work if it works off the same motor as the mirror adjustment. Also when I put the cap back on top of the motor, it looked like nothing made contact with the two little + & - holes on top of the motor. It looked like the metal thing kind of sat on top of the motor without making contact with the power prongs down in the motor. Anyway, I really wish I could get it to fold. Also, I felt like I could not get the two locking tabs on the top backside of the mirror to go into their slots. Anyway if they did I could not hear the two snaps on the bottom of the mirror click like in your video. Maybe the mirror is being held by the guey white goop. Also the mirror seems kind of out of focus its hard to explain anyway kind of different, funny to look at. Thank you so much Dustin ! ! !
Great video. Followed your instructions and replaced with new gear from amazon $7. Part number is sku: bge28fba. Tip for removing the mirror is to use a small flat head and place it between the black/white plastic on the right corner. It will come apart very easy.
Really good video. This helped me fix my mirror on an 07 sequoia. I ordered a gear from amazon for $7. One thing to add, around the 6:15 mark I think you are supposed to unplug the two wires from the motor cover. On mine the little circuit board plugs into the side of the motor and then the cover goes back on and replug the harness. Unplugging the harness would have probably made it easier to pull the cover off. Anyways I hope this helps someone and thanks for taking the time to make this video.
The constant motor running is due to a bad switch. The constant running is what broke the gear. At least that’s what I think. You fixed the slop which helps me a ton, but I’m still curious how to get the power folding working again.
Quick question, do I have to replace if the mirror just got bent in? My issue is on the passenger side neck of the mirror that sort of hinges in, Someone pushed it in and i pulled it out back into place, but it does not stay in place, the wind bends it right back in
Dustin I know I’m late to the party, but I just bought an 06 DC Tundra. Driver side mirror, not power folding, just power adjusting. It has a slight wobble and when going down the Highway it wobbles a little and we’ll it makes you dizzy a little bit. Is there an adjusting nut to tighten the manual folding mechanism? Thank you 🙏
First thanks for the great how to. I've been wanting to do this for a very long time but was afraid to brake the mirror. How did this hold up after the repair?????
Gluing the gear did not hold up. That was before I knew about the availability of a replacement gear. I disabled folding on the drivers side. I haven’t needed to take it back apart since.
I have these power-retractable mirrors on our 04 Sequoia Limited. Great Video, thanks for creating it! My son clipped and broke the mirror and black mirror housing while backing the car out of our garage (why he didn't retract them, I'll never know) and I'm not finding a replacement for the power retract model anywhere. I'm wondering/hoping that if I get a manual folding mirror replacement that I can repair my mirror by moving the motor assembly from the old broken mirror into the new non-motorized mirror housing. Any idea if this would be possible/doable? Our motor retract is still working fine. If it's doable (meaning the motor mechanism will just bolt into a new mirror housing), then this video will be extremely helpful. Again, thanks for publishing it!
I’m sure that the replacement gear is going to be the equivalent of the original gear and will likely hold up a comparable amount of time as the original gear. I’m sure it’s just an injection molded plastic gear just like the original.
Rather than cut the blue/green wire for those that don't want the clicking and don't have the time to fix the gear mechanism, you can remove the pins from the connector. To do this, there is a plate on the flat side of the connector. The plate is a lock that holds all the pins in. If you get a small pick or screwdriver, you can carefully pry this plate up. Use even force around the edge and it'll pry up about an eighth of an inch. Don't pull the plate all the way out. Now, remove the blue/green wire pins from the connector and push the plate back down. Put a small note on where each wire goes so you can remember to put them back in the same spot if you do decide to try the gear repair later.
The part number is BGE28FBA. It looks like you can currently get it from ebay. www.ebay.com/itm/Side-Mirror-Folding-Gear-for-Honda-Jazz-Stepwgn-MK2-Toyota-Vios-28-Teeth-/373219462491
When you reinstalled the mirror into the Sequoia, did it fix the problem? I have the same issue and have kept the passenger side mirror non powered because of the clicking noise for the folding mechanism. I too had to search and I gave it another try today and found your video.... Thanks!!!
proxybox I think it would have fixed the issue. Unfortunately, I had the mirror apart once before this video trying to figure out the issue and ran out of time. I wanted it back together and adjustable, so I snipped the wire that powered the folding motor just to keep it from clicking.
Thanks!!! Your video helped tremendously. I was afraid to pop the mirror out but after watching your video it was a breeze. I found it you push the mirror all the way up, you can see the clips near the bottom. I put a small screwdriver between the white clip and base and gently lifted and it separated. The glue wasn't too sticky so it was easy to cut with a utility knife. Removing the cap off the motor was a pain. I couldn't retain the clips and they all broke. I was successful at removing the same broken gear as yours and I cleaned it. I didn't trust super glue alone so I also waited for it to dry with a small clamp lightly pushing it together and then used JB Weld to fill in the voids in the circle to bind it all together. I put the JB weld on both flat sides with a toothpick. I was very careful not to get it in the gears or in the center hole. Since JB takes a while to set you can use a toothpick and rubbing alcohol to carefully wipe if you happen to get some in the gears. I waited overnight for it to dry. To make managing the cap a little easier, I removed the mirror control which is held by a couple of screws. The electrical contacts pop off without much force. By doing this, the wires will be free and it'll allow the cap to have more freedom to work around. Reassembling was a nightmare. I noticed that the cap has two contacts which must meet the motor exactly. I couldn't get these to align after several attempts so I cut the green/blue wire that feeds into the top of the cap (I found out later that this is a clip and can be removed with a small screwdriver inserted), removed the small pcb board inside and cut the cap off. I soldered a jumper wire to the green/blue wire to the other end from which I cut it from. I then soldered a jumper wire from the two metal prongs on the pcb to the motor directly. It's tough to solder to the small contacts on the side but it is possible. The solder gun will melt the plastic and then you can get the wire to solder to the contact. I then cut a ziplock bag and carefully taped it to the base with electrical tape to protect the motor from water. I wrapped the top part around the wires so it would be sealed as well. It worked!!! Now my mirror retracts and extends with ease. I have a photo of the JB welded gear if you want to update your video. Let me know how to get it to you. I didn't have to adjust the gears or anything like you described.
Good idea with filling the gear with JB Weld. Unfortunately, there's no way to edit the video without re-uploading it. I could however post a link in the description to where the photo can be found if you wanted to upload it somewhere like imgur or google drive, etc and send me the link. I'm glad you got it working. One of these days, I may reconnect the wire on mine to see how long the superglue holds up. :) Thanks for watching.
Picture of each side of the gear with JB Weld. I'm pretty sure super glue will fail. Most plastics don't hold well with super glue under load. pix.sfly.com/Om3omZ pix.sfly.com/3UDkV7
So my JB Weld fix failed. The crack reappeared and the clicking started again. I found that if you sprinkle baking soda on the gear first and then put a small drop of super glue on top it'll bond instantly and form a very hard bond. I found this trick on RUclips as well.
I did exactly as u but now the motor didnt work😅 i guess im gonna buy another mirror but thanks for the info i feel much better knowing i can do this kind of things to my toyota👍
I did but i guess i did something wrong bcause the motor mirror didnt work anymore i think it was my fault bcause i pulled the wires a lil hard maybe i disconect something. Oh and the folding thing just got harder si idk i mest up. Lol
Before putting the cover back over the motor, you have to remove the weather plug the 2 power wires go through; slide it up the wires out of the cover. There is a little black plastic pin that was also going through that weather seal. Grab it with needle nose pliers and pull straight out. This will disconnect the wire connector from the motor control board. The motor control board will be loose and come out of the cover now. Now, connect the motor control board to the motor first! This is a plug in connection like plugging a socket into a wall outlet as you push the power out pins of the control board into the top edge of the motor. Make sure you line up the slot in the bottom edge of the board with the groove in the housing mount the motor is screwed onto. Then put the cover back over the motor and the hole should line up with the wiring connector on the control board. Plug the wire connector back into the control board, and slide the weather seal back into place. If the wire connector is seated in all the way, the black pin end will be almost flush with the seated weather plug. Your motor will now have power again. These are the instructions missing from this video; the rest is great.
There is a green gear that cracks/splits. The way to fix it is by shaving the spline into a square shape with a dremel, and then you can super glue. The cracked gear causes the shaft/spline to spin on the gear and produces no load for the circuit to open
giyoh shey I assume you’re talking about unplugging the switch? The panel that the switch mounts in has to be pulled up. It’s just clipped in. If you’re talking about how to unplug the mirror, you just have to remove the triangular trim piece on the door and the connector will be under that.
Does ANYONE know where to get the correct mirror with the correct plug for our trucks? I see this one has the correct larger plug. Every mirror I find has the small plug and it does not work. I have looked high and low for new power folding mirror. The dipshit PO changed the mirror and out it in there and there the original away.
Thanks for letting me know about the link. It looks like that part listing has been removed. I found another listing for the part and put the new link in the video description.
The user 'proxybox' posted in the comments that he repaired the broken gear by filling both sides of the gear with JB Weld. You may try that if you don't want to wait on shipping a new gear. Here's links to the photos he provided of his repaired gear pix.sfly.com/Om3omZ pix.sfly.com/3UDkV7
Nick Gallo I’d imagine that Toyota does NOT sell the gears individually. They’ll want you to buy a whole mirror. You’d either have to repair the existing gear or find someone that could make a new gear via 3D printing or molding/casting a replacement part.
I'm thinking of just buying a replacement mirror off eBay. However, I want it to match color wise. Do you know if the painted plate on the back of the mirror comes off so I could just swap that painted piece out? Anyone know?
The color plate should come off. I believe it's just held in by clips. You can kind of see them towards the top of the mirror at 10:10. I'm not sure you'll be able to swap them without disassembling the mirror though...Also, if you plan to buy a used mirror, you run the risk of buying one that has the same issue. There is a replacement gear available for under $10. I put a link in the description.
I'll pull it and give a try. Thanks for your help Dustin. My issue is the mount itself appears to have issues. If you barely brush the mirror it moves about 1/4" rather than just staying still. It works but the combination of the motor whirring and the mount moving is pretty annoying.
That movement is probably due to the gear being broken. I had the same issue with the cracked gear, and after gluing the gear back together, I found that once the gear drive was reassembled with minimal gear lash, it holds things tight. Unfortunately, during a previous repair attempt, I just clipped the power wire to the fold motor so I could retain the power adjustability.
Solved by
1. opening rubber plug on motor cover that the power wires go through.

I have a 1st gen Sequoia and when I disassembled my side mirror to replace the broken mirror, it is completely different inside compared to yours.
San Marsui interesting. What year do you have. Does it have the heated and powered mirrors?
1st gen Sequoia Limited is the same.
SR5 or aftermarket replacement may be different.
I wonder how the replacement gear has held up?

I’m sure that the replacement gear is going to be the equivalent of the original gear and will likely hold up a comparable amount of time as the original gear. I’m sure it’s just an injection molded plastic gear just like the original.
Rather than cut the blue/green wire for those that don't want the clicking and don't have the time to fix the gear mechanism, you can remove the pins from the connector. Just to clarify, this is on the connector where the mirror harness connects to the door wire harness, correct?
Yes correct. Here is the plate I'm referring to. It looks like a crown. Just pull up on the crown and the pins will release. pix.sfly.com/fbNxe7

The user 'proxybox' posted in the comments that he repaired the broken gear by filling both sides of the gear with JB Weld. You may try that if you don't want to wait on shipping a new gear. Here's links to the photos he provided of his repaired gear pix.sfly.com/Om3omZ

Very complete...good work. Thanks!!
What are the part #'s for the gears and where do you locate them ? Thanks
Nick Gallo I’d imagine that Toyota does NOT sell the gears individually. They’ll want you to buy a whole mirror. You’d either have to repair the existing gear or find someone that could make a new gear via 3D printing or molding/casting a replacement part.
great video Dustin exelente video explained very clear Gracias
Thank you so much
I'm thinking of just buying a replacement mirror off eBay.
Yes, there are screws holding it down, and some tabs to depress from inside until pops up, so you can buy any color mirror and use your plate.
Very useful video, Thanks.
Very helpful, thanks!
Thank you!!!!!!
Thanks man..
Glad I could help. Thanks for watching.
Or you could buy a whole new mirror assembly for 50 bucks👍
Where are you finding a whole new power & heated mirror replacement for $50? Share a link please.
