  • In this video, we will study the subject-verb agreement.
The basic principle states;" A singular subject needs a singular verb, and a plural subject needs a plural verb."
    Adding s and es
    1. Singular Subjects:
When the subject is singular, add “s” or “es” to the regular verb.
    Tom runs very fast.
    Jill cooks tasty food.
    Jim kisses his dog.
    2. Plural Subjects:
When the subject is plural, do not add “s” or “es” to the regular verb.
    The children love to play.
    My brothers sleep a lot.
    3. Compound Subjects:
When the sentence has compound subjects, do not add “s” or “es” to the regular verb.
    Tom and Jill sing beautifully.
Jim and Tim ran very fast.
    4. Compound Subjects (or/ nor):
The verb will agree with the subject that is closer to the verb.
Neither Tom nor Jim likes apple pie. (Jim likes)
Does Jill or her sisters like apple pie? (sisters like)
    5. Subject and Verb (Separated by word or group of words):
Make sure the subject agrees with the verb.
Jim, as well as his brothers, works at the school.
