A routine account of the 1913 Epsom Derby, one of many horse races that the Topical Budget newsreel covered that year, this film inadvertently made a contribution to the history of the suffragette movement by capturing the moment when activist Emily Davison was trampled by Anmer, King George V's horse, after she invaded the track.

Weird to think that everyone in this video is dead
I thought the same thing... I mean, it's maybe possible that one of the oldest people alive was in this video as a small child somewhere, but in all likelihood I think it's a decently safe bet that all these people are dead...
HeyIzzy you Sony believe how often I do this with documentaries. .movies etc that I watch it gives you a very lonely sort of feeling can't quite place it.
bet you're fun at parties
@@johnsmith-bx4rn We might possibly all be a blast at parties given the fact that we're all watching this video from 1913. "Hey did you see the new Captain Marvel yet?"
"Um... no. I did watch part of the Derby from 1913 the other day though."
But the way I look at it is that if I we don't watch this and see what happened with history while keeping the video active, before too long it'd be smothered in twerk videos and lost forever.
A lot of the people knocking Emily in this comments section are brain dead.
I'm here after I watch suffragette film .
Me too.
Same
Because this IS a suffragette film.
Me too!
I'm here while watching it
Unbelievable to think that Emily lay in hospital with her injuries for four days before she died and in that time received heaps of hate mail.
Goes to sure there's always been a section of society that can't handle positive change and goes out of their way to spread hate.
Not cause of why she did it she could've really hurt the horse or the horse rider but you want to simp for afew girls to see you. Only seeing shit from her point of view
Her cause was noble but her execution was horrible.
@@RahulSharma-dt1vj yeah and a horrible place to do it as well
@@matthewhinchliffe2334 i mean that was kinda the point. she wanted to be somewhere where ppl would notice. it had to have meaning
we’re learning about suffragettes in history and i think it’s really interesting, i personally don’t think her death was on purpose (suicide) i think it was an accident. she wanted to put the white scarf on the kings horse that wrote “women’s rights” and get out the way but didn’t think of how fast the horse moved.
Yea, me too. THe people in the comments are so ignorant though smh
Right, and she had a train ticket in her pocket too so when Anmer (which was the king’s) and the rest came rushing down...
And she had a train return ticket. Plus neighbours remembered seeing her practicing tying a banner to a moving horse near where they lived
And remember, she needed that return ticket because, back home, she hadn't done the dishes yet.
@@Cassxowary I think she was a martyr. I respect your opinion, but this is just my own. Davison had previously tried suicide, and having failed, had left her with serious injuries. I believe she had the train ticket because she was scared it was going to work again, and so she brought it as a precaution. That's my opinion :)
I went to school with her great grand nieces. They were called Meghan and Olivia. I was in the school choir with both of them and they had beautiful voices, they were top of their class for all subjects and were very strong, witty and polite. She would have been so proud of them.
sad that people are calling her stupid or crazy for this. the horse was fine. it wasnt on purpose. her death led to women’s rights that gave hundreds of thousands of women the rights they deserved. learn a bit of history and learn to respect people before commenting on a woman’s death like that, thanks.
oh bohoo
But she put the rider at risk. He was hospitalised because a woman wanted to protest in an idiotic way.
Rattus Rattus He supported what Emily did haha
Briseida Bermúdez Source?
Unfortunately, 100 years ago people said the same nasty things about her plight. One man sent her family a horrible letter saying he was glad she died. Different era, same crap to deal with.
Can't believe that my grandfather wasn't even born until another 3yrs later in 1916, and has already had his lifetime go by (dying at 86 in 2003) and my lifetime is nearly half over (I'm going on 39), its just crazy how fast time passes
I watched the movie suffragette and it was so sad. Women were treated so badly and unfairly back in the days. Women nowadays are so lucky because of these women who fight for equality and rights. Laws back then gave men the rights to keep the children if the mothers were seen as unstable but they are not unstable. They just want rights.
You get all your history from TV and movies? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣That explains a lot.

In the exact same place as we are today, the only reason she is remembered is because she was trampled by the King's horse
@@adampl2723 that's not necessarily true - her death brought awareness to the women's suffrage movement, and due to knock off effect, helped win women the rights to vote. Sure, women would probably have more rights now than back then, but not as much as they do now because she died. Picture it this way - any part of history that we remember nowadays has had some effect on modern society. That's why we remember it.

😂 So glad I wasn't the only one who saw the wedgie dig! 😏
3 things:
1. This was a compleat accident. She wasn't trying to hurt the Horse or the Rider or even herself she was simply trying to pin a woman rights flag onto the horse and misjudged the speed.
2. I find it kinda weird that a lot of people are more concerned about the horse than Emily or the rider. I am ALL for animal rights, but you can see the horse got back up afterwards, so it couldn't have been close to death injured.
3. Emily was amazing. This movement got women all across the world a step closer to women's rights!!
I agree it was s as n accident but I believe after searching more about it I found she tryed to khs multiple time abc layed in traffic knowing the risks so I believe she knew the risks
@@AlfonsoHistory01 you gotta be stupid asf to think the horse is going slow
Actually you don’t know that it was accidental.

This act was so noble! Even though it was an accident that she died it still showed how much effort they’d put in for women’s votes! A very courageous women! God bless
@Benjamin S. She tried so put a women's right scarf on the kings horse but got fus to dah'd into next week.
The act was quite stupid because had no impact on women voting
@@e33u75 You're wrong. They wanted the press to write about them, the race was a perfect ocasion - they were filming, there was also a prass, so it's all documented
@Benjamin S. No jockey is innocent because as soon as the horse doesn't win enough money in races they are shot. It's all greed for money. Most race horses don't live longer than 4 years. Do ya research hun because that woman was braver than you'll ever be.
Benjamin S. It had no impact? Are you fucking stupid? This event was documented and shown all over the world. The suffragettes needed press to for their cause, to spread the word and even gain support and that’s exactly what they did. This BRAVE woman risked and lost her life to spread this message. Her death is what sparked the chain of events that overall allowed the much needed change for woman’s rights. So please do yourself a favor and educate yourself, or you can continue you be an ignorant shit. Up to you.
God bless ya Emily.
She was fighting for women's rights, something that was REAL in the early 20th century, unlike feminism today... stop being a troll on RUclips, because you're just the dirt that nobody wants to eat.
A: it was a stunt that went wrong. She didn't intend to kill herself.
B: she not only endangered her own life, but the lives of the jockeys and horses.
She was a fucking idiot.
Men didn't have universal suffrage in 1913 either, nor did many of them have the vote during their service in WW1.

Even now, 100 years after the event, it is still a tragedy that women had to die to get what is a basic right of any democracy.
Kevin Mullen How many men died in two world wars fighting for the basic freedoms we have today, which are being eroded away by the extreme left.
jimmy s that may be, but in contextualization the original aristrocrats who upheld and ruled the world were men. And the women had to contribute to keep the stability of their nations while the men fight it out. Men may have fought for freedom, but (and in keep in mind that I'm not a feminist, misogynist, chauvinist, etc.) it was the women who had to support their nation to keep it stable, so it's fair to say women should have rights. And I agree that our freedoms are being taken away as we are talking.

Kevin Mullen errrr not really
Bless that woman.
When I first saw the video of Emily Davison jump in front of the Kings horse, in the name of protest, so women could have the right to vote and to lay the path of equality in England. I cried. I felt emotionally overwhelmed that a stranger would do this, for the sake of other women. Her courage gives me goose bumps. She knew she didn't face much chance of survival, she planned this, she knew it would take someone to die at the hand of the Kings horse, in order for the suffragettes to succeed. This woman is one of my idols, her selflessness and character is most honourable.
No, she was just taking her own life and wanted company. Thankfully the rider and horse survived, unfortunately the rider later took his own life. So, she was a killer and nobody worthy of being a intelligent person's "idol".
I have a question and I want to see if anyone can answer this. Why did she think that running in front of a 1,200 pounds horse running at about 80 kmh to pin a woman right scarf on it would be a good idea? im not saying woman shouldn't have rights im just saying that, that was a stupid way of trying to get the rights to vote.

FYI watch the Suffragette's, but i'm sure most of you would'e seen it. Sure some of the stuff they did was wrong like breaking glass windows. But the men are at fault too. I don't like to take ONE side. i look at BOTH perspectives. The suffragettes needed to grab the attention of the king and what they were doing, such as the protests on the streets and breaking glass windows was not "efficient". So a women that died for her rights would obviously grab attention. This action got a lot of attention all over the world and was one of the big pushes that drove women from several other countries to fight for women's rights. But i understand that getting in front of a horse like that was extremely risky as the horse and rider would obviously have gotten hurt but saying it was an act of terrorism is a bit harsh, i would choose the word "inappropriate" or basically something else besides the word "terrorism".
I'm doing Modern History so we'll be doing an entire Unit on this stuff.
Zerda Pekin I would disagree with the fact that the suffragettes were not terrorists as the definition of terrorism states ‘the unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims,’ because of this, I would argue that blowing up post boxes, burning down houses and destroying shop windows falls under ‘unlawful use of violence and intimidation’ resulting in the suffragettes being terrorists. Disclaimer:In no way am I arguing that the suffragettes weren’t needed but instead that they fell under the category of a terrorist organisation.

RIP the horse.
Never in the history of The Derby did the result of this prestigious race matter less.
The banner at the start of the film is complete rubbish. "The Race From Start To Finish." She was killed at Tattenham Corner, which is over half a mile from the winning line.
