It's amazing that so much film footage exists of Queen Victoria's funeral procession exists, given that this was way back in 1901, and motion picture technology was still in its infancy at this point. Having watched the funeral procession for Queen Elizabeth just a few days ago, it's really interesting to notice how little has actually changed in regards to the pageantry, military outfits and funeral processions for deceased royals. I bet that this film footage would look even more similar to the modern era if someone took the time to colorize it and slow it down to normal speed. Just like with Elizabeth's passing, Victoria's death truly signaled the end of an era in Britain, and I'm sure back then, people also keenly felt the loss of a beloved, long-reigning monarch. Two remarkable female rulers, two centuries apart, who had both definitely made their mark on the world scene. RIP to Victoria and her great-granddaughter, Elizabeth.
The biggest difference was that royal standard with the crown, etc was removed from the coffin and carried separately up the church stairs whereas with Queen Elizabeth they were carried together.
Also I believe Victoria's funeral was the first time the gun carriage and coffin were pulled by naval cadets. This was unplanned as apparently the horses bolted somewhere near Windsor and some naval cadets who were lining the parade route were called in to pull the gun carriage the rest of the way. Which is why they are rather haphazard and not as regimented as at Queen Elizabeth's funeral. After Victoria's funeral all monarchs coffins have been pulled by the naval cadets.

My grandmother use to talk about Queen Victoria. Such regard all based on a portrait of a Queen. There was such regard and faith. We have been fortunate to have Queen Elizabeth II in our lives and her funeral broadcast.
Not in any way to detract from Queen Victoria’s funeral, I was so impressed with the precision of all the military participating in Queen Elizabeth II’d funeral. Comparing the two, the standards of marching, of presentation have clearly risen in the intervening years. Queen Elizabeth’s guard was amazing to behold during the broadcast.
I agree, Queen Victoria's funeral frankly looks like a shambles. The later ones - including Elizabeth II - were spectacular. Very well planned and executed near flawlessly.
Queen Victoria acended to the throne in 1837 when Lord Melbourne was the PM and was crowned in 1838.Two years later in February 1840 she married Prince Albert who was given the title of consort. Queen Victoria was eighty one when she passed away in January 1901 thus heralded the end of the Victorian period.
It was if Queen Victoria's death in January marked a change in attitude of Kaiser Wilhem William(1859-1941)who was the grandchild of the deceased Queen. The Kaiser had this enormous respect for Queen Victoria and then after her death the Kaiser adopted a hostile attitude towards Britain especially Queen Victoria's eldest son King Edward VII and thereafter King George V. It was the Kaiser's aggressive foreign policy and his hostility towards Britain that was one of the factors that led to the outbreak of the Great War in 1914. The Kaiser was at odds with Britain his ambitious naval expension and had once remarked,"Germany cannot be a super power unless the trident is in our hands."
You seem to be quite knowledgeable; can you tell me where the procession was headed? I know she died on one of the channel islands. Is this taking place in London? Also i have seen pictures of their tomb at Frogmore, was she taken directly there? Thank you. I apologize for my ignorance.
@@yiseng4602 I agree with what you say about George V but disagree about Edward VII. I think Willie had a great admiration for his "Uncle Bertie" and as such, Edward made visits to Germany and kept communication open to stave off war. I think it was after HE died that all hell broke loose with the Kaiser. Even when Queen Victoria was alive tensions were deep. Remember those letters that the Queens daughter Vickie had smuggled out of Germany for fear her son the Kaiser would use them against England even though they were personal correspondence?

Apparently you can visit the graves and the mausolem for a fee. It's supposed to be really beautifully and has stunning artwork. A real tribute to Prince Albert
It's surprising how disorganized everything is, compared to the Funeral of Queen Elizabeth. The British royals realize that in the age of TV and internet, when billions of people are watching and the cameras capture everything, there should not be a single wrong move. The level of perfection they've achieved is astonishing. Elizabeth's funeral was the greatest show on earth.
I don’t think it was as disorganised as these close clips may ‘indicate’. In fact, I think of it as merely representing the way things ‘were’ then - not forgetting the scapes and lack of technology etc. etc. Wonderfully ‘authentic’ - also, that old film looks more static than real life ☺️
Keep in mind, too, that the old silent films tended to make footage jumpier and more distorted than today's modern films, and they also made everyone appear to be moving faster. The funeral procession of Queen Victoria's time was also probably very dignified and precise; it's just harder to tell with this old footage!
I was looking at the horsemen and those marching. It looked as if many of the men were heavier than those we saw in Queen Elizabeth's funeral. It was a bitterly cold day in 1901, reportedly, so perhaps everyone was wearing layers of clothing. I did notice one horse acting up. His rider was very portly! I wonder what music was playing. It must have been difficult back then for many people to have traveled from afar to pay respects. Amazing that in many aspects the funerals were similar except I felt that Queen Elizabeth's was a bit more precise. The men marched in sync. Perhaps these had practiced more. Communication today is so much better. It was a blend of the traditional with a bit more modern. Both visually stunning.
@@camillep9346 I agree. Plus, this was all filmed at low level, much of the footage last week was aerial. That always looks calmer than if you have a camera among the crowds.
Not too amazing given that this happened 119 years ago. And, sadly, it might not be too long until we see another funeral procession of similar, if not bigger, proportions, given that HM The Queen is now almost 94 years old.

Someday I'm gonna tell my children that I was here and saw queen Elizabeth and the historic moment that it was when she passed. So strange , how can you miss someone that you didn't even know?
I was struck by the imprecision of the drill compared to today's. They were almost relaxed about what is being done with clockwork precision during the funeral processions of Queen Elizabeth.
That's what I noticed too. It is the same basic ceremony, but rather haphazard in it's execution. It just demonstrates how well trained modern soldiers are. Another thing to consider is that modern ceremonies are specially choreographed for television. So I imagine the soldiers today are well rehearsed in the ceremony ahead of time. It also helps that most of the royal family today have served in the military, so they all already know how to march correctly.
Interesting. Another factor might have been that this was an age before TV and moving images were absolutely everywhere, and people were not used to being photographed and filmed; things were done in the moment and that moment passed for ever. So different to today, where everyone has a camera-phone and every teen seems to stare at images of themselves and others endlessly, and with so many of them obsessed with the outward appearance of people.
A "a tremendous moment in history"?? WHY? A human being died. Was happening EVERYWHERE on the same day. Humanity is strange for prizing the wealthy human over everyone else.

It's amazing that this film clip has endured the test of time for the past 121 years, yet at the same time, very sad as all the people (and horses) in this footage are all gone now.
The first section of this film is the wrong way round (mirrored) - Tunicks are fastened the female way, medals are on the wrong side of the chest, swords and scabbards are on the wrong side of the body, the flautist is holding his flute the wrong way round!
I have just watched Queen Elizabeth's funeral, it was so polished in comparison to Queen Victoria's. However it has been fascinating to watch Queen Victoria's. The British certainly know how to do ceremony beautifully. RIP Queen Elizabeth.
I would not be surprised if QV's precession was markedly larger than today's. Back then the UK had an empire that spanned the globe, today it has no empire (mercifully) and after 12 years of Tories it now has more people in prison than in the regular Army.

The gun carriage and sailors pulling it was accidental. Her coffin arrived on a carriage. The horses had got stressed waiting in the freezing cold during the service and bolted, breaking the traces (edited out of newsreels) the sailors had been ranged up and down the streets holding these ropes to keep the crowd back. They were drafted in at the suggestion of one of the Battenberg relatives.

Incredible footage, I just watched King George VI’s funeral (Elizabeth’s father) but I never imagined finding this as well. Great as it is, I’m surprised with modern technology they can’t slow it down to normal speed. I know early silent film always seems to be a little fast but to have it at normal speed would make a huge difference, especially with a funeral. Maybe it’s something to do with the separation between each frame? Not in any way to detract from Queen Victoria’s funeral, I was so impressed with the precision of all the military participating in Queen Elizabeth II’d funeral. Comparing the two, the standards of marching, of presentation have clearly risen in the intervening years. Queen Elizabeth’s guard was amazing to behold during the broadcast.
Exactly what I thought, they look like they’re sauntering along.
The marching standard was much better for George VI than Elizabeth II.
I agree, Queen Victoria's funeral frankly looks like a shambles. The later ones - including Elizabeth II - were spectacular. Very well planned and executed near flawlessly.
I thought the same! Everything in Queen Victoria’s funeral parade seemed much more casual and inattentive.
I was wondering if the advent of TV means that standards for this kind of thing rose. So much more scrutiny.
And the beginning of the Edwardian period
@@madamvaudelune3298 She died at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight. Her funeral service was at St George's Chapel which is where Prince Philips funeral has just taken place. Then she was buried with Prince Albert in frogmore mausoleum in the grounds of frogmore. It was built in 1862 a year after Albert died in tribute to him and the Queen was finally reunited with him on her death in February 1901.

It was actually Queen Victoria’s son that implemented the precision pomp and circumstance now associated with the Royal Family.
@@camillep9346 I agree. Plus, this was all filmed at low level, much of the footage last week was aerial. That always looks calmer than if you have a camera among the crowds.

There’s a whole story behind bank cameras. There’s a reason it’s bad quality AND the reason why all videos of Bigfoot are all bad quality
I was struck by the imprecision of the drill compared to today's. They were almost relaxed about what is being done with clockwork precision during the funeral processions of Queen Elizabeth.
I agree with you!!
I thought the exact same! It’s been polished and perfected over the years hasn’t it! 🖤👑🇬🇧
Agreed, but I wonder if olden day filming makes it look even more jerky and uncoordinated than it was at the time.

Yes, there were some uncanny similarities there as well. What a contrast though as you say
I would not be surprised if QV's precession was markedly larger than today's. Back then the UK had an empire that spanned the globe, today it has no empire (mercifully) and after 12 years of Tories it now has more people in prison than in the regular Army.

Heavena Wilson i find this sort of stuff interesting because it gives people a perspective of long ago and how people lived. This was even before the radio electric lights, and people had to find ways to entertain themselves. However, it makes me sad that people today are not interested in learning about the past. This was in an era where people had to work hard for what they had unless they were born into privilege but even second and third sons of the rich had to make their own fortunes or marry a heiress. It's amazing to see the same uniforms and the same gun carriage. Some things never change
This was the first funeral that gun carriage was in
The gun carriage and sailors pulling it was accidental.

Watching the funeral of George VI I was shocked that apart from the vehicles, and the fact that it was cold and grey with the Guards in long coats, it was virtually identical to that of Elizabeth II, which was an amazing feat.
