For those who don't know, the self defense target is a Shoot'n'See on top of a modified silhouette target, one layer of T shirt on the front, one layer of t shirt on the back, all pasted on the new and improved high tech cardboard stand.

I’ve been watching Paul for years but never had a gun. I just recently got my first pistol and took it to the range. My God did that first trip put into perspective how good of a shot Paul is.

I bet a box of pop tarts you’ll be getting your 4th one in less than a year.
I remember the feeling. After you get several range trips under your belt, the novelty will wear off and at that point you'll start being able to better focus on what you are doing. For now, just enjoy it, or maybe focus on just one thing at a time, like trigger control or sight alignment (aside from safety and range rules, of course - that's always included). If you try to master everything at once before you get used to the pops from other lanes, you may get frustrated by your lack of progress. We all learn differently, but that approach worked better for me.

@@missingnola3823 my biggest issue is recoil anticipation, leading to me chronically shooting low. I think it’s probably worthwhile to invest in an instruction session to help prevent bad habits.
Ditto here when I started 3 yrs ago, could hardly hit paper. Now I can put consecutive shots through the same hole in half my pistols😊. Btw a double action snub-nose revolver is actually a great training pistol even if your not into revolvers, especially in 357, will make a 9 feel like a 22. The short sight radius and long trigger pull will make you use any striker fire with a creepy trigger like a pro.
This community is surprising supportive and forthcoming with good advice, 1. Your mindset should be as if your writing a letter to a loved one, only your pen is a gun. A person with good handwriting will be a good shot quick usually , it’s fine hand-eye coordination and keeping heart rate down. 2. Front sight focus. Period lol.

To be honest, the only gun channel I still watch. Many feel influenced by vendors. This doesn't at all which I appreciate 🎉

It's hard not to do a meaningful ad for sponsors and not somehow come off as influenced or a shill, because the host is being influenced to some degree, and is shilling the products. The modern segways into ads sometimes come off as more forced than "And now a word from our sponsor XYZ, Inc."

No pomp no flash and clearly no investment in the actual answer to "is it good" it either is, or is not, and that is all.
There's not many that aren't basically just 20 min ads with too many ads and too many mentions of ads. Plus it kinda gets on my nerves when historical and educational content gets shut down and demonetized for some vague not actually in terms of service rule. Meanwhile so long as you're paying youtube their millions in dues, you can literally do anything you want including 'harmful or dangerous acts' or 'promoting violence' like rolling around on skates while firing full auto 100rnd drum mags. Including getting hit by spalling, bullet and target fragmentation every other video. Meanwhile channels like Forgoten Weapons gets shafted for documentation of engineering, history and function in the safest most peace promoting way possible.
Taofleder, Brandon Herrera, and sometimes Garand thumb and Kentucky ballistics still have unique content that doesn't feel like a ad of a ad in a ad that took a shit on a ad.

Too many of our shooting areas have been closed in Oregon because of people shooting trash and not picking it up
Common problem everywhere
In northern Nevada the desert was a defacto dump, shooting range, meth manufacturing area, etc. People everywhere treat nature like shit. I live in Oregon now, and the areas I've been to are all relatively clean-ish
They are being closed with any excuse the tyrants can find.

Paul, I taught this stuff for a lot of years, and you reminded me of a point I used to emphasize to my students. In a real defensive shooting situation you may not know if you're getting hits or not. It's not like in the movies, especially on a clothed person, which is exactly why you shoot until the person(s) are down and no longer a threat.

You are also unlikely to see blood pouring out of people (as often shown in movies). Some shooting victims bleed very little, even with large calibers.
Dumping 17 rounds at 10 feet and scoring 2 hits in a crowded urban environment like so many do kinda bothers me.
I prefer the cops that run controlled doubles.

6:55 ( 1 second earlier) we can see what looks to be a good snap, a decent hold, and using those 2 trees in the background as uprights - right on-line, but came up a just a few yards short.
perhaps Paul needed to use the soccer-style field goal shooting technique to get just a bit more umph.
Love the tip on using a t-shirt over the target to make it a more “realistic” target. This is why you gotta really appreciate Paul’s videos. No “tacticool” BS “run and gun” sequences. Because what are the chances in a real world self defense situation are you going to be “running and gunning”? No tactical wannabes telling you what kind of belt and holster they are “running”. Just good, useful common sense tips on training that will actually help you.
You just described pretty much every other gun tuber.
The best part is that nearly everyone has a ratty shirt or could save them up over time essentially for free if you're not willing to buy a cheap on at the dollar store.
You know those videos aren't oriented towards self defence right? You don't need to shit on something so hard for not fitting the category it's not even trying to fit.

Speaking of reactive targets, years ago I saw a deputy sheriff at an outdoor range practicing with several handguns. He brought ammo in 50-round cardboard boxes, and when a box was empty he'd throw it out toward the backstop and then chase it back and forth with his gun. It reacted much more than Paul's cube, but didn't go flying off into the distance like the drink bottle.

Your lucky to be allowed to have targets that look human. Where I live in gun free Australia the poor shooters can’t shoot at ‘human’ looking targets or targets that take the shape of a human. Possibly explains why the Australian police are bad shooters when the criminals go wild. Get well Paul. We’re still rooting for you in Oz.

This is a real thing, militaries learned that if you train on targets that aren't shaped like the enemy, soldiers are more reluctant to fire when they need to be.
Thanks for another great presentation, Paul. When my sister had me training her son, I used tennis balls. When he was good with those I used golf balls. I found that a slight incline was also useful. Sometimes the balls would stop and sometimes roll back towards you. This can simulate an advancing attacker. You never know how an attacker is going to react, the same way with the balls and you need to react to what is happening. Waiting for your next great post! :)

I use old bowling pins. Used to get them free from my local bowling alley- got so many now, I haven't had to see if they're still giving them away in 8 years- chuckle.
The t shirt target is brilliant, and could even be filled to use at other angles such as quartering angles.
Yep, never saw a target that wasn't squared up to the shooter.
I'd seen where using an empty shotgun shell box as a spacer between two cardboard targets then covered with a t-shirt makes for a great oblique angle target.
I too was concerned about obvious aiming points. Back when such things were common I made my own silhouettes from grocery bags. They were simple & easy to make. And as CGR89 commented I & my shooting companions always drew from concealment when praticing for self defense.
So glad to catch this one cause I'm working 15 hours today but I'm on break & this presentation is brief enough for me to watch before work starts again.
Brown paper bags are my go-to for patching cardboard silhouettes. They're free/cheap and can be modified if you need.

I got a used golf ball and sent it from ~5 yds, to all the way to the end of the range and half way up the backstop.
On a friend's old bowling pin 🎳 target I hit it in the neck the narrowest area, something he had yet to do.
He decided that it would be a new goal as well as being hard to hit he wouldn't be walking down range to reset it as much.😂

One of my favorite drills that I trained my son in was the firing two shots from the draw in less than two seconds, and with a 1 inch or less spread from a distance of 25 feet away. Now this drill takes a lot of practice, and you have to work your way up to it. The idea behind the drill is if you have to use your firearm, you can do so very accurately and quickly, because in self defense shootings. They happen very fast, and things can turn from bad to worse in an instant. That's why I do this drill.

@@bobjones-bt9bh yes at eight yards. It took two years of practice for me. My son had to practice for a year and a half. As I said before, it's not an easy drill, and it takes a lot of practice.

Pick up your garbage.....such a simple message, but the impact of not doing it is huge. It's been my experience that gravel pits around where I live, have been closed off due to this issue. Even went so far as to load up my vehicle with trash in hopes of keeping it open; only to have my efforts rewarded in vain. So if you enjoy shooting in such areas where you live, this little bit advice may go a long way towards keeping it going. Thanks Paul for bringing this issue up.
Best Poptart entry ever!! (Dad had a blue '70 model with a "Coyote Duster" six-pak back in those days.) The T-shirt technique is brilliant and very usable. The bottle blaster is Excellent!!
Soup cans work well if you put a small then medium and larger together and seal the lid on the outside one just jam it into the other cans and the target takes a lot of shots and will keep moving away. Or you can put golf balls into a can same thing and they will take a lot of shots bouncing all over the place.
A year ago I found about 40 T-shirts destined to become land fill. NOW there is a way to use them BEFORE they go to the land fill. Perfect!

He seems to be feeling a little bit better. I really enjoy the videos, and always learn something new. I spent almost 18 years in the Army and have learned more from his videos than I did in there.
Well, Paul, my useful drill started back in the 1970's. I used a steel pop can on a hillside. With a Ruger 10/22 I chased the can around the hillside shooting from the hip. I got VERY GOOD with this drill. I surprised my older brother several years later (we were both in L.E. at the time) when I was visiting and we went into the desert around El Paso and did a shotgun drill with different size targets. The larger the target the greater the threat. I got all five in about four seconds or less (we didn't have a stopwatch). He was really impressed with my speed AND accuracy. It is still a lot of fun.
Been a can shooter since the late 50's. Yeah, I'm old. However, iron plates are attached to posts and such. They're static. Cans move! Game move, and most importantly, people move! Paul is right, of course! 👍
One thing I find that very few people actually practice is drawing from concealment. You'll have guys who are absolute sharpshooters but have only ever fired from a bench, never practicing drawing from a holster and firing on target.

One thing I find out that very few people YT channel talks about "clothing". All they say is..."You gotta dress around the gun". However they never give any sort of advice, tips or give general idea to you as the viewer. They just say..."Dress around the gun". I'm 5ft 3. From my practice drawing from IWB 3'O clock I learn that I should NOT WEAR any shirt that has a overall length more than 24 inches. If the overall length is just one inch longer my gun will "snag" and it will take longer for me to lift up, switch to my left hand to hold my shirt up as I use my right to draw. My shirt has to be 24 inches. I can get away with 23 inches. If the shirt is too long my draw will be slower and I can snag. If the shirt is too short..say under 22 inches the pistol grip will print.
I bought one of those "hyper brand holsters". That cost me $100 for the whole set and all the goodies that comes with it. I wear a Kore belt. When standing still and drawing..yeah the holster works fine but when I change up the mood by moving and drawing. Guess what? That hyper holster sometimes came out before I got my gun up or sometimes the holster is still attach to my gun. Now if I practice sitting down and drawing the holster will shift around or even fall out.
That's right folks. Gotta test your stuff and play with them. Just because YT people say that the product is great, down the comment people are saying the same thing and the product is 4.5 out of 5 on the website or whatever it doesn't mean it will always be meta for you.

@@burnyburnoutze2nd YES that's very true. My closest range doesn't allow it, nor does the next closest. They don't even allow draw from an unconcealed holster.
However, they both teach CCW and advanced CCW classes where you're sometimes required to draw from concealment.
The third-closest range is outdoors (unlike the first two), and after watching you do it, they'll let you draw from concealment or whatever you wish if you do it proficiently. Mag dump your HK91? Sure, if you can control it. It's a lot farther and no fun in raunchy weather.
I’m relegated to a public indoor range so I use this drill: Paper plates at three, five & seven yards. Using my J Frame I empty the gun into the target as fast as possible, reload & repeat. The goal is to keep all 10 rounds on the plate, tight groups are unimportant & I slow down a bit as distance increases.
I like it. Do you have the plates against another target or just hang those in the holder?
You can use a dessert plate for a smaller target as skill increases or just to mix things up a bit.
I'm working on an idea with ear buds under my cans. On a large piece of paper, I intend to have multiple different small targets, each their own color. Over the ear buds, I will have a recording saying the different colors randomly. You could then either use a different recording or a new paper with the colors in different places than the original.
I use a standard dinner size paper plate and staple them to the cardboard backer at the range. I also use this drill w/my LCP & LCP Max, swapping out mags to reload on slide lock.

You got me laughing with the first bottle! Hilarious! Suggestion: try with a platic bottle, but instead tie it to a stake with a thick wire. In that way, it will still jump around, but will not go too far from the original point.
Great ideas! Just be sure to check with your range rules. Many public/private ranges do not allow shooting cans, bottles etc. Nor do they allow you to shoot at the ground for fear of ricochets from rocks, etc.
I use plain brown IPSC targets for handgun practice.
No aiming point and easy to patch.
Aluminium cans seem to work better than plastic bottles as reactive targets.
I ordered a plastic stencil for USPSA targets so I just trace and cut them out of cardboard. Pretty neat.

I would really like to see a Paul Harrell video on concealed carry that adresses the different kind of carry rigs and how to choose on that works for different scenarios. Small of back, chest rig etc. What do you think Paul???
Great stuff from Paul as always. We used to freeze water in the old gallon milk cartons. Strip the carton off, now your target will become smaller the more times you hit it then vanish into the ground no cleanup required. Shoot a little orange paint on the smaller chunks. Had a lot of fun doing this and walked off with no plastic or trash on the ground.
When that soda bottle disappeared over the hill I about spit my iced tea out all over my desk. Funniest thing I've seen all damn week.
All of these are really good point. I do like the reactionary target and used to do some like that with plastic bottles against a berm.

I use a "backer board" of 4'x4' plywood or luaun. I've started using red rosin or brown craft paper, which comes in a 4' wide roll of 400 sf, under $10, and cut off 4' at a time.
Tape it to the board, then use 1" colored pasties stuck on like a 5-spot along card. You then have five targets at a cost of about 50¢.
Depending on how good your eyes are and what caliber you are shooting, over a out 5-7 yards you can't really see the bullet holes. So, like Paul using the tee shirt, you can fire every how many rounds you want before walking up to see how good of a group.

Wow. I've used t shirts like that for years too. But I also can't claim my idea had its origin in the mind of greatness. Goodwill and yardsales help alot.
Thank you for your presentation. One “trick” I use similar to the first technique is to use copy paper as the target. It removes the bullseye and still provides some information about your shot placement and accuracy. An 8in x 11.5in is just about the same size as an A-zone target. This technique really helped my mom who was struggling with shoot-and-see targets. I put up the piece of paper, told her to shoot it, and she did! Then I held it up to my chest and showed her that, while her groups weren’t great, her shots would be probably be effective. I think Paul has mentioned before about alternative targets.
Lived out in the desert of Arizona growing up and town was far away, so we used various sized and color of paper plates for targets and called these skill target practice. For our battle practice we would set up old shirts for practice. Now many years later still use paper plates and sometimes shoot and see targets wish they made a shoot and see t-shirt. Thank you Paul and crew for another informative lesson video.

Paul and gang! 9 hole reviews mentioned you today while doing a test on the 30 carbine. They managed to shoot up to, I think, a single shot on 400, or 350 before running out. They mentioned you because of the rumours that the bullets wouldn’t penetrate the wool winter coats of the N Koreans, but they couldn’t address that because they basically don’t have the meat target. I think that would be an awesome video for you to test if that would be true up to expected combat ranges, and if not, how far. I’m sure I’m not the only one who has heard this, yet for some reason it seems they were the hot item, which implies the rumour is false.
I've personally had better luck with the sphere reactive targets than you seemed to have with the cube.
Love that he added pick up your trash many of the outdoor public shooting areas got closed down because people wouldn't pick up after themselves
I love the balance of video topics. Between the reviews/comparisons, the teaching, and videos like these that help freshen up the hobby, it's always nice to tune in. I also don't skip the chronograph sections lol
I was given a couple reactive targets, similar to what Paul was using, as gifts but instead of a big cube they were sphere shaped (about the size of a baseball) and those work very well, I feel like the cube shape would need maybe a larger caliber to really react properly.
Excellent video as always, Paul, but I have two comments to make:
1. For when you discuss silhouette targets, why not cardboard USPSA/IDPA targets? They don't have an obvious aiming point, are silhouette shaped, and with the brown stickers they are expected to be used with, you can patch up the bullet holes, so they don't make an obvious aiming point after a few rounds. That's what I use for my training.
2. I think that particular plastic reactive target is intended for use with firearms a little more powerful than a .22 LR handgun, but honestly, I never really liked them for safety reasons; reactive targets like that are unpredictable enough that they could wind up landing in an unsafe direction. Just my two cents.

1.) Those cardboard targets are expensive. He stated at the start that this was INTENTIONALLY low budget
2.) He was using a 9mm and reactive targets landing in unsafe directions is exactly why they can make really good training aids. It teaches you to focus on your surroundings, not just target fixation. Literally training you not to fire in an unsafe direction just because "Well the target was there!"
@@ShellShock794 1.) I bought a pack of 50 of those targets plus a roll of stickers for less than 60 Canadian Dollars. I'm still using them almost 8 months later with plenty of both targets and stickers to spare. Most people spend more than that on ammo every time they go to the range LOL
2.) When I meant "unsafe direction", I meant not inadvertently flagging/injuring your friends of innocent bystanders because the target bounced behind the firing line and you followed it. If you want to train for situational awareness and unpredictable targets, take a proper training class. Seriously.
A better way of doing the two man drill is to have both people stand about 50 feet apart with the bottle at the 25 foot mark. They begin blazing away and who ever manages to drive the bottle past the other guy wins. Just have a medic on standby.
@@ShellShock794 those targets can be really affordable if you buy them in a 50 or 100 pack. $1 a piece or less, even. With that being said, I don’t think Paul was directing this presentation at people who are training so frequently that they buy 50 or 100 packs of IPSC targets.
I greatly appreciate the reminder to clean up after yourself ... I think sometimes we forget about that.

Food for thought (no, not Pop-Tarts!) on the reacting to a moving target, as well as the whole paper target idea. I used to turn targets around so I couldn't see the circles or anything, and tried shooting for center mass. Then I'd turn the target around to see how I did. (No T-Shirts were harmed).
That little orange cube-y thing is pretty good at throwing up a defensive smoke screen!

The only problem with the ground drill is, some ranges such as mine, do not allow you to shoot targets on the ground due to the risk of ricochets!

That bottle careening off into the woods after the first shot is about the funnest thing I've seen this month. Now if it were me instead of the bottle, I'd hopefully react like that before the first shot.
The old tshirt is a good tip. I picked that up several years ago in a class and regularly incorporate it in my training.
I always liked using the little 22 cal. box that a box of cheap ammo came in as a reactive target. But it doesn't work in tall grass.
I haven't tried it, but tying a plastic bottle to a string & fastening it to a tent stake would prevent it from moving too far away.
In our LEO practice, we would shoot the "Golden Triangle". The 2 points where the neck meets the shoulders, down to the position od the 3rd button of a shirt. At the position of the button, you take out the heart, lungs, and spinal cord, stopping the threat.. Great video!

One winter my brother-in-law found an old junk pile near a pond on my Dad's farm. The pond being frozen over we developed a game of one of us throwing a bottle across the ice of the frozen pond and trying to peg it with a .22 bolt action. The nature of the bolt action requires you to reacquire the target trying to hit it before it stopped sliding if you missed. With a brick of .22 ammo and lots of bottles pretty soon we were impressed with our accuracy and switched to hitting the caps off of the broken bottles-open sights mind you. The glass conveniently disappeared into bottom pond muck with spring thaw. My point being that a small, moving target (like the plastic bottle) is immensely useful (and fun) to hone marksmanship with the constant reacquiring of sight picture with a dynamic target that becomes more difficult to hit.

My dad was the best shot I ever saw. He used reactive targets all the time back in the 60s and 70s. He'd polish off a Coke, pitch the can out in front of him, then draw and keep it hopping. Saw him do that with a wide variety of pistols, even a SAA. It was as impressive as hell.

I live in Long Beach, California, where there is nowhere to shoot outside like in your video. However, I have over the years shot handguns off of sailboats. We used to shoot clean empty beer bottles, thinking that would be the least environmental mess. Probably much like jack rabbits, if you can hit a bobbing beer bottle that is moving past your boat it is good practice, and you don't end up with dead rabbits. (To be clear, we would collect the empty bottles before going out . . . we didn't drink beer while shooting.) But in the last few years I have realized that the first shot into the water makes a clearly visible, fairly-round bloom of bubbles in the water, which make a good reactive target for the next shot. The follow up shot makes another bloom of bubbles, which give immediate feedback on how accurate the shot was. Then that bloom becomes the new target, and so on. Add in the fact that the "target" is moving because the boat is moving away (sailboat speed is a brisk walk) and the fact that the surface you are on is also moving, and it becomes a very challenging reactive target with immediate feedback. Lo cost as well. There are a couple problems, of course. Down is no longer a safe direction because the round will make a lovely .22, 9mm, .38, .40, etc., hole in the least accessible place in the boat. Up is also not safe because you can hit the rigging or put a whole in the sail. (Yes, we figured this out the hard way.) You also need to be far enough offshore to be legal (3 miles around here) and make very sure not to fire anywhere in the direction of other vessels. As a Coast Guard lieutenant explained when I called to make sure this was legal, they cannot ignore a call from some guy in a boat that he is being fired upon by some crazy guys in a sailboat.

Watching this helped materialize something that had been in the back of my mind for a while. While Bill Drills and Mozambique drills are great and have a time and place, I think that a more people are doing those than need to be. I think the Bill/Mozambique are good training techniques when one is already adept at shooting; so drawing, accuracy, and weapon manipulation are all no-brainers. At that point, focusing on speed is cool.
But the important point to make is that if we set out to train like this, using these "simple" methods, we are addressing the fundamentals; something everyone could use more work on.
I find that when I shoot those other drills, even if I try to shoot slow and accurate, my accuracy will inevitably suffer as I unconsciously speed up. And I'm not the only one that I've seen this with.

Many years ago I did exactly the same thing for a LEO department at the gun range. I got to where the bullet chasers were so worried about where they were hitting they would run out of time for the drills. Thank you for reinforcing this training technique. Thrift store t-shirts over B21E targets really showed the gun fighters apart from the bullet chasers.
