(Left this up for when I was running Mike's sites; leaving up for now.) An old Mangini drum solo - recorded by a fan in the crowd at an Extreme concert (Hammerjacks, 1995).
he is really insane. up to a point. he is great in this era up to the early 2000s. even at the audition. but in dt, mike is bad as a sidesman. he is like being controlled and not himself. maybe it was the pressure or what. im a super fan of him before and have an autograph of him. but portnoy is dt. he belongs in dt and mike is just an outcast and i feel like dt is holding him back.
@@krioni86sa I honestly feel DT won’t ever return to the level of rhythmic complexity obtained with Mangini. AVFTTOTW being a primary example of how complex Manginis mind is working to the rest of the band.
@@krioni86saI love Mangini era DT. It became real prog and stepped away from the mediocre metal it became in the '00s. I was sad to hear that they let Mangini go. Portnoy is nowhere near his level.
"excuse me, can i watch any mangini video with no bitching comparisons between him and portnoy?" guys, this isnt even dream theater related! it's been four f-ng years! come on!
***** no, because i am a huge portnoy fan and i hated his leaving from the band. but i know complaints about it are just as annoying as the "oh mangini is soooo much better" b-s.
@Vic Santiago wrong, even mangini have said that what porntoy did on several song is just perfecto.... So, watever, if your are talking just about technique, then forget I was here, I don't care that issue...
When I saw Exterme in London in 1995, the thing that stood out was Mike's drum solo. Probably the most amazing drum solo I've ever seen! Those one handed drum rolls and his spedd was mindblowing!! Thanks for posting.
Mike is a living legend, I've seen him once with Extreme & twice with Steve Vai. He's a very smart drummer, genius if you ask me. I want to be like Mike. Mike rocks!!!!
Some people really need to stop this Mangini - Portnoy shit!! Do you really think they both give a fuck about this? Damn, just outgrow this cockfighting and do some shit for yourselves!
Pavel Vilchytski I will admit, I have been a die-hard DT fan since WDADU, and I thought life was over when Portnoy left DT. However, when I watched the drummer auditions for DT, Mangini came on first, and instantly I was like "OMFG the search is over, I LOVE this guy!". I will admit, much like the addition of Rudess, DT has reached yet another pinnacle with their addition of MM, and I couldn't be happier. MP couldn't even shine MM sticks.
Awesome! Thanks for posting. I saw them live with their original line-up and they were great, but when I saw them with on this very tour, I was right in front and THIS is what I remember most-- more than Nuno's solo(and I'm a guitarist), and EXACTLY as I remembered!
My favorite drum solo of all time. I’m not even a huge Mangini fan. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a bad ass. But after seeing this solo for the first time many years ago, I was blown away by the creativity, power and that rototom set up!
during this same time frame, mike did a clinic for my drum department. after setting this kit up, i asked if i could play it. he said yeah go ahead... very interesting setup. all toms are in a "v" setup. i asked a hell of alot of questions about what he's playing. all i can say is...damn!
Brilliant! I have enormous respect for this guy! I don't believe you can officially compare him(or any other drummers) to any other drummers! Everyone of the drummers mentioned below are astonishing to hear & watch, I think each of them has something completely individual to offer. I think there all great.

Gary Cherone, Nuno Bettencourt, Mike Mangini and Pat Badger in the same band... WOW
First of all this isn't the place for freakin Portnoy comparison BS. But since you brought it up, Mangini can play faster with his left (non dominant) hand than Portnoy can play with both....and I love Mike Portnoy.
You all talking about how he's so technically awesome and that he "trumps Portnoy" and blah blah blah... But nobody has said WHY THE FUCK IS HE IRONING HIS HAIR?
Mike Mangini would be perfect for Dream Theater. He has the energy like Mike Portnoy. I really hope that they make a good decision and get someone like Mangini. I can't wait to see what their decision is going to be.
Hey man, Mike Mangini isn't just about speed. If he was, he wouldn't be teaching at Berklee. I don't think he is the "best drummer" or anything, but the man is definitely very good. I haven't been part of any of his classes yet, but I have seen some of them when I am walking by, and he knows what he is doing.
il m'a donné des frissons et c'est rare en musique ! merci Mike de passer sur Terre : Solo musical , technique et virtuose tout ce qu'il faut : Bettencourt et Mangini très bon concept
Mike Mangini plays literally very symmetrical in this solo, even had the roto-toms with the small in the center and going down each ay very cool to see - he's great with both left and right hands - and feet too!
I love this guy, one of my favorite drummers! He's also really awesome in person. Very friendly, super nice and a bit goofy. Met him at a day of percussion in 2004 (shorter hair then...)
Yes, but he doesn't play with the same "feel" as Portnoy. (Just kidding. He's amazing. I first saw Mangini play for Vai in '99, and again two years later at a drum clinic, and I've been a fan ever since. I purchased his two drumming method manuals 21 years ago, and I was thrilled to see him get the DT gig years later.)
I've read all the comments below. Let's just appreciate great talent and enjoy it, shall we??? I LOVE Portnoy and all that he's done with DT, Neal (and Steve) Morse, Transatlantic, etc.etc. But things change, don't they? Let's just appreciate this for what it is.
Good ol´ days :-) Extreme on their 95` Waiting for a Punchline Tour was one of the first concerts I ever visited (in Munich). No opening band, they just came out and kicked our asses! Perfect evening, fantastic band, EXTREME Rulez! \m/>_
It's "Cynical Fuck", taken from their last album, "Waiting for the punchline". Then, Gary Cherone (vocals) entered Van Halen, Nuno Bettencourt continued his lone career and Mike Mangini became one of the masters of drumming. I ignore what happened with bassist Pat Badger.
By far the most talented in that otherwise forgettable band. Fastest drummer in the world, apparently. 5:15 looks like he's being hit by lightning! An incredible performance.
Off the freakin charts! Not only is he incredibly fast, he's amazingly articulate, funky, smooth and has an incredibled drum sound. I agree with drulius, the roto toms really have a distinctive and unusual sound that I'd like to see explored more by some of the "bad boys" I wonder what Tony Royster Jr would do with them...he's always up for something unusual
I am a HUGE fan of good drummes.... So love both Mike and Mike. But prefer this Mike. HOWEVER. This Mike might nowadays benefit from looking at this video and take back some influences. This solo is more melodic, more fluent, more creative than most of the solos he does today. Love him though still, just trying to help MM
I've already replied to this but I'll say it again, quite probably the greatest drum solo I've ever seen in my life. I saw him do this when they played inLondon in 1995 and I was awestruck and never forgot it. Thanks for posting.
truthbtold wtf are you talking about, have you seen his DT drum solos? DT controlling, thats not what Ive seen/heard, watch some mangini DT interviews, you dont have a clue mister
I don't think it is controlling at all. It just the energy level that sometimes seem to be missing in DT in comparison to this and other videos you find on RUclips.
Awesome! So hard to choose. I personally would of choose Marco or Aquiles or Peter W. but I wasn't there to see and know everything that happened. Congrats to all. I know they will still have jobs and new opportunities down the road.
I had no idea he played for Extreme, how old was he here any way? Just curious. At about the 3:49 mark it sounds like the beginning of Zepplins "when the Levee breaks."
What's funny is John and Nuno will have great respect for each other. Some people are desperate to turn music and art into something competitive. It ain't...

Keep coming back to this for the amazing playing and the bright yet warm sounding RotoToms. Fantastic, never ceases to amaze.
The sound of this kit is fucking brutal. Amazing!
the remo toms sound better than his current pearl, imho.

24" if I remember correctly

Shut the fuck up, Mike Mangini is literally Lars Ulrich compared to Mike Mangini.
I must disagree with you . Mike Mangini is better than Mike Mangini and wipes the floor with Mike Mangini.
First of all this isn't the place for freakin Portnoy comparison BS. But since you brought it up, Mangini can play faster with his left (non dominant) hand than Portnoy can play with both....and I love Mike Portnoy.

...I was wrong.
First saw him playing on this tour at the Hammersmith Apollo in June 1995. I didn't know who he was but my jaw dropped when I saw him play this.
