Postal Worker here, good job. You covered this well. I wanted to add that comic books are not eligible for Media Mail. Old and vintage magazines are not eligible for Media Mail. Thanks for the informative videos.
I love Pirate Ship! Their customer service is top notch. I had an insurance claim for a missing package, and they handled it extremely quickly. I use them for pretty much everything now.
Thanks so much for covering shipping so thoroughly! I'm brand new to reselling & I've been searching RUclips for videos that explain which of the free USPS boxes can be used for shipping items through USPS, especially now that Ground Advantage is now in place. You have answered all of my questions & you are the only one in my weeks of searching that covered all of this information. Thank you so very much!!! I now feel much more confident after watching this video, thank you again!
You have been a great help, I've made my first $200 this month thanks to your videos! Thank you so much motivating me to take charge and sell some stuff!
Wick, as a brand-new, just-getting-started reseller, there has been SO much that I've had to learn! And then the USPS threw this major change right in the midst of it all. Lol. I so much appreciate youtube resellers such as yourself, and Scot at Cha Ching King, for making videos explaining all of this.
Thank you so much for this video! I’m brand new to eBay and frankly totally lost when it comes to shipping. Still relatively new to Poshmark but at least shipping there doesn’t scare me and now thanks to you I realize I can just keep using usps priority shipping and don’t have to figure out where to buy the mailers from, etc. Thank you!
It's always good to brush-up on certain things & shipping is one of them! I appreciate all the details you included and I will check your supply list for that box scorer since I've spent way too much time making my own! Thanks again, Wick!
If you get really bored could you do a 2 to 3-minute video just showing how you package the items. An example of this would be cutting a box so that it folds up differently changing the shape of the box and that way the item would fit inside. And just a couple of examples just showing how you would package small tiny items and a couple bigger items. It sounds easy but some of us have ideas that this is scary stuff and that is what holds us back from beginning. I was just saying if you have some time if you could do just a quick short video and call it shipping for dummies... 😅.
I'll try and make a compilation when I package some odd items and make a video out of it. I have videos where I show me packing stuff, just can't remember what they are at this point lol
USPS Ground Advantage replaces First Class, Parcel Select and Retail Ground. And yes it’s great you get insurance with Ground Advantage. Cheers. And I thought USPS doesn’t allow any modification of flat rate boxes.
I just want to say that the one time I filed an insurance claim with USPS things went smoothly once I filed the claim. I tried many times to influence the Postmaster to find my package and resolve the issue without any luck. But once I filed the claim there was no problem getting my money back.
"Everybody is going to make a mistake when they start out." That's really true and you still goof even after years every once in a while, thanks to changes like the USPS long package deal recently. As much as we'd LIKE it to be: shipping isn't completely an exact science. Thanks for featuring the box reducer/sizer tool. I resize boxes a lot, and that's a real struggle for me, even more now that I have arthritis in both hands. I'm happy to have that recommended. I'll pick one up.
Ground advantage is pretty cool so the cheaper shipping isn’t capped out 13 oz. Plus eBay was allowing 15 oz to be purchased and the post office wasn’t correcting the charge as long as the weight was correct
I live in New Jersey and unfortunately plastic bags are banned. I still buy them from Amazon because I didn't realize all I use them for until I couldn't get them anymore 😔
I've had 3 packages lost or stolen from the rodchester hub . I'm waiting on a 4th that was shipped accidentally threw usps it hit Rodchester and I haven't received a update since just "in transit to next facility arriving late . Pay the extra for private shipping . Or if you have to order threw usps order multipli items threw different sellers and with usps you might get 1 2 to 3 weeks late .
Ground Advantage quickly gets expensive when you go beyond the 1st pound. USPS rates are currently ridiculous, making their advertising of this new shipping method deceptive! Ebay doesn't really make it easier either with their thieving fees...
Great information and very helpful to me as I'm trying to unload some extra larger items like PC's and Playstation console. The shipping aspect has caused me some concern as I want to be fair to the buyer but not short change myself either.
Did you mean use the USPS boxes? If you are using eBay international you'd ship to the eBay international place first in the USA. Then they take over and ship it international. Because of that you can use the free priority mail boxes as long as you use priority shipping. If you're not using eBay international there are different rules to ship international using the free boxes, but you might need to talk to someone at your local post office to make sure on the details. I don't ship international unless it's through eBay international, so I don't know all the rules.
@FlippingJunk thank you very much for this video . Im taking notes as i watch and i appreciate how clear you have made things. Also i posted on another video but i think the question is more appropriate here... What options would you recommend for a new seller printing lables at home ? Like what tech to use . Thank you 👌
Everything under a pound has stayed the same as before as far as I can tell. Are there zones that are higher now? There's brackets for prices under a pound. 1-8oz, 8-11oz, and 11-15oz
It's against the rules if you didn't pay for priority mail shipping. You can do it, but there's always a chance they will flag the package if they happen to catch it.
If I just throw a box or a Rubix Cube inside a poly mailer, is that considered non machinable and subject to a surcharge because the dimensions aren't the same for the whole package? I mean it will be lumpy and not exactly square or rectangular throughout the entire pkg. For example I get medicine bottles shipped to me at home and they are just tossed in a poly mailer. How do I determine the size, is it just the size of the poly mailer regardless if it's lumpy? Hope you can help me with this because I've searched everywhere trying to figure out how to calculate the dimensions.
If you are shipping a Rubix cube in a 12x8 poly mailer the dimensions would be 12x8 + the height the Rubix cube adds. So if the the cube is say 3" you'd input 12x8x3. Poly mailers usually won't add any extra cost because they are light and not huge.
That's exactly the info I was looking for. Appreciate your responding and an FYI, I bought the Rollo Printer......can't wait to get it, I'm tired of taping on labels. Great informative video.@@FlippingJunk
So much research for something that seems simple and I'm still confused. I feel like I need to know how to ship before I can start listing. Cause, assuming I get a sale, I need to be ready. Maybe I should just jump right in and expect the worst, pray for the best. 🤔
@andreatrog6066 Hopefully, this will be a helpful update. USPS offers free shipping supplies. You can order online, but you can also pick them up locally as well (at least at my post office). I got some padded mailers today, so I'm finally going to start listing some stuff.
What's your thoughts on harvesting your own boxes if you work at a retail store. I work at a big lots and have practically an almost unlimited supply of boxes
Should you enter your package weight and dimensions in your ebay listing or wait until the item sales? Idk if I add it in listing or click idk box details
If you're doing calculated shipping. It's much better to weigh your item and estimate the packing materials/package size. This will help keep the cost of shipping correct and you won't get as many surprise shipping costs.
Just to clarify if I’m selling something from china and it will take a long time, will eBay remove the listing if I don’t clarify that it’s from china?
I will never use usps for packages again . Stopped using them then gave in recently and ordered and what do you know "your package is in transit but will arrive late ". The last time it never arrived and usps lost it ???? I guess someone wanted this one also so it got lost to . I wish my packages were protected . I'll never use usps again
Thanks for the valuable information! USPS Priority mail is more expensive if you're using their boxes. Does it make sense to purchase boxes similar to USPS sizes?
It can make sense to buy your own boxes and ship ground advantage instead. Just depends on what you're selling etc. I find using all the shipping services and options is best for me.
Do you recommend that up to 15.999 oz I sent Ground Advantage and 1 pound and over Priority Mail? Flat Rate if Heavy? I don’t know where the buyer is from when I list so it’s hard to do this by distance. How do you set it up to give buyer options? I have a shipping policy for Ground Advantage, another for Priority Mail and then one each for different Flat Rates. Is that the right way or should the options be on one policy drop down? Thanks for advise!
Yes but you can't enter 15.999oz in Ebay lol. If it's under 16oz (including the packaging) it can technically go Ground Advantage. If it's over 15oz personally I just bump that item up to Priority for safety's sake. I sell clothes mostly now. If it is over 1lb, and can fit in a padded flat rate priority mailer, I charge $9 flat shipping to buyer. If it is over 1lb, and can fit in a paper flat rate or legal flat rate, I charge $8 flat shipping to buyer. If it is over 1lb, and can not fit in the flat rate mailers, it will be listed with calculated shipping, Priority. As far as I can tell, until you get over a certain weight and dimension, Priority is the best deal, and after that, looks like Ground Advantage or Fedex. I am not sure where that threshold is, but studying the graphs will help figure it out. They publish a matrix of how all the prices break down. Because I do mostly clothes I'm not super worried about it tbh.
I don't use policies because they always screw everything up for me. I tried them for a while but found them very difficult to make changes globally. I stick to making global changes using Bulk Edit. I just changed all my shipping from First to GA using Bulk Edit. So I can only answer how to add a shipping option without using Business Policies. It's very easy, you just click on "Add Service" when listing. That's it. Then you specify Calculated or Flat and if Flat, what is the rate. I tried using Business Policies for shipping for a while but got frustrated with it.
I don't use shipping policies, so I can't really say, but when I list I can add multiple shipping options and I just choose calculated. Then put in the weight and measurement info. It gives an estimate of how much the customer will be charged.
@@helpfulcommenter this typed out is SO HELPFUL! Quick question: what is "paper flat rate" - is that the Tyvek? I use Tyveks all the time for Poshmark and wondering when/if they can be used on ebay. Thanks so much!
Hey Wick - great information, thanks! Do you pass along the discount on shipping, or do you have ebay collect the full shipping amount and take the discount as profit? (I have mine set to pass along the discount, but am adding $1 handling charge to offset packing materials a bit.) Have had good luck w/ABB - thanks for letting us know they have tape, I'll get that next time - been getting a decent deal at Sam's on 3M.
It's under "Shipping Preferences." I'm still trying to figure out if it's a good idea. It probably doesn't matter as long as my total is competitive. There's a healthy discount %, so I think it may look like a better deal for the customer when they're looking at the order.
I still do both. Retail arbitrage isn't as great as it was 10 years ago because of the amazon restrictions, but I still find plenty to sell and make money
I've never sold before. Would I send the package from my address to eBay and they ship it from their warehouse to the customer? Or do I send the package directly to my customer's address?
Question- I am confused…. The Priority flat rate padded envelopes that you can get for free online- can you ONLY use them for flate rate shipping? Or can you use them for regular priority mail too?
You can use them for priority, but they can't use the flat rate price. They can't be used for ground advantage. This is all information that is subject to change, but I haven't heard of anything changing and this is what I was told by postal employees.
@@FlippingJunk gotcha!!! Thank you SO MUCH! I love the padded envelopes for smaller stuffed animals- just wanted to make sure if I was shipping priority mail, that I wouldn’t get in trouble because it’s technically a priority “flat rate” envelope…. Makes it so confusing! And also got it- ground advantage can’t go in priority mail packaging of any kind. Your video was SO helpful- thank you so much ☺️ ♥️
Thank you for this video. I changed all of my listings with a new shipping policy set to calculated USPS Ground, but I am confused by one thing. When I click revised then review my listing am I supposed to see a new price for shipping? I thought it gets calculated depending on where the buyer is located? Does the price automatically update once it is purchased?
The price should update based on the buyers location, the box size, and the weight of the item. It should be accurate for anyone viewing on the listing page.
@@FlippingJunk Just to clarify since I already put in an estimated box size and weight there is a shipping price already there on the listing page. But the price will still update based on the buyer's location? Thank you for your patience with me.
I have what I use linked in the description, but really most scales are fine. I recommend one that has the screen off the scale so it's easy to see. Otherwise the package can block the screen
You agree to not do that when you get the free boxes. If you're caught the package might be denied and sent back, or you may receive extra charges. Up to you if it's worth the risk.
i want to sell something that is heavy and will ship out in 5 seperate BOX sections , each one weighing aprox 22 pounds each box.. Am i going to be charged much more because of the 5 individual boxes as compared to just one large box ?
That's a tough one. You'll probably be charged less shipping 5 individual boxes. Assuming you're shipping ground. You get all kinds of freight surcharges otherwise for large/heavy boxes.
Every since they started this Ground Advantage i have had nothing but problems!!!!!! I have Never in 15 years of being on ebay had so many MISSENT, LOST or SHIPPED ALL OVER THE PLACE before it gets to the buyer and so far 3 Negative feedback because of them! TOTAL crap!
Can I buy my own label from usps website for my item or you have to use those from ebay? those labels created on ebay have no option to add a signature or insurance and that sucks I want to create my own label on usps website and add whatever I want schedule pickup etc can you do that?
You can order directly from USPS. You just need to make an account I think. Also, you can add signature and insurance on eBay. There's options for both.
You input the total weight and dimensions of your item when listing it and the customer will be charged the exact cost for shipping based on their location. It's the safest way to ship as long as you are accurate with your weight and size.
@@FlippingJunk sweet that was fast. But I won’t know the actual price until it sells bc when selected it the range was from 7 to 30 dollars! I’d hate to make someone pay 30 dollars to ship does that mean they must be in California?
The price swings can be $20 or more depending on how far they travel. An extra few ounces or an inch larger than expected can really multiply the price of the items if going across country. Calculated shipping will charge the buyer the correct amount wherever they are in the country.
can someone please help me? last week i sold items through mercari with usps ground advantage using priority mail boxes. i went to the post office to print out paid labels using their kiosk-- fast forward, everything was delivered/went smoothly. today i tried to ship out more boxes doing the same thing except this time the kiosk was down. i went to the desk so one of the postal workers could print out labels and put them on my packages... and was told i was using the wrong boxes. they also told me "if you use these boxes they'll be returned to you". the postal worker then directed me to an area where i should purchases the "correct" boxes to ship my items. my question is, if what they were saying is true... why did my previous packages get delivered okay? am i being scammed into buying more boxes from them? please let me know!
@@FlippingJunk thank you for your response! so what boxes would you recommend? i believe target has the same boxes but for a better price... can i go with those?
I would recommend buying a bulk amount of polymailers. They are lightweight and won't add much if anything to the cost of shipping. they are fairly cheap if you buy a large amount. This is what I use for usps ground advantage/first class packages. i buy a smaller 10X13 or so and a larger 20X40. I rarely have to use anything else unless it's shoes or something that needs the protection of a box in which case I just save boxes from received shipments and keep some on hand to use.
Don't use calculated shipping. Always put a flat shipping rate a few dollars lower than it will be. Feels like a good strategy considering I'm usually a few dollars into something I'm flipping times 10 to 20
I was getting them on eBay, but the seller no long sells them. I've been wrapping them in big bubble wrap and putting them in a black garbage bag to ship.

@@helpfulcommenter this typed out is SO HELPFUL! Quick question: what is "paper flat rate" - is that the Tyvek? I use Tyveks all the time for Poshmark and wondering when/if they can be used on ebay. Thanks so much!
Where can I buy the printer for the labels? Which one do you recommend ? Thank you :)
I recommend the ROLLO thermal printer. The one I use is linked in the description.
I see in your videos you sale alot of shoes. Do you usually ship with priority mail shoe boxes since box is free?
Yes, usually use the priority mail shoe boxes for basic shoots.
Hey Wick - great information, thanks!
Do you pass along the discount on shipping, or do you have ebay collect the full shipping amount and take the discount as profit? (I have mine set to pass along the discount, but am adding $1 handling charge to offset packing materials a bit.)
Have had good luck w/ABB - thanks for letting us know they have tape, I'll get that next time - been getting a decent deal at Sam's on 3M.
I just pocket the discount. I didn't even know there was an option to pass the discount
It's under "Shipping Preferences." I'm still trying to figure out if it's a good idea. It probably doesn't matter as long as my total is competitive. There's a healthy discount %, so I think it may look like a better deal for the customer when they're looking at the order.
I have been getting destroyed by USPS charging me for underpaying. They used to not care.
then consider yourself lucky that you ripped them off for so many years and start shipping more responsibly in the future.
Where do you get your boxes for combo units? Ty for your videos Wick
I use 18 x 14 x 12 boxes and score down to fit. I get them either on eBay or Amazon. Just depends on the deal I can get.
Thank you for sharing!
Do you still do retail arbitrage or only yard sales?
I still do both. Retail arbitrage isn't as great as it was 10 years ago because of the amazon restrictions, but I still find plenty to sell and make money
I've never sold before. Would I send the package from my address to eBay and they ship it from their warehouse to the customer? Or do I send the package directly to my customer's address?
With eBay you ship directly to the customer.
Media mail went up again last month unfortunately. It’s now about double the price it was when I first started
Your video was SO helpful- thank you so much ☺️ ♥️
Your videos are great! I would love to see a video of an actual eBay listing being made. Shipping options and services have been my biggest hangups.
Never mind, I found the answer in a couple of your replies to other peoples questions. Thank you so much!!!
@@MootieScootiewhat was the answer you found???
What if they don’t have the sizes for the package
what scale do you suggest , Thank you ‼️
I have what I use linked in the description, but really most scales are fine. I recommend one that has the screen off the scale so it's easy to see. Otherwise the package can block the screen
Can one not just gift wrap a priority box and tape it down?
You agree to not do that when you get the free boxes. If you're caught the package might be denied and sent back, or you may receive extra charges. Up to you if it's worth the risk.
ARC books don't wanna go thru media mail sometimes 😢
i want to sell something that is heavy and will ship out in 5 seperate BOX sections , each one weighing aprox 22 pounds each box.. Am i going to be charged much more because of the 5 individual boxes as compared to just one large box ?
That's a tough one. You'll probably be charged less shipping 5 individual boxes. Assuming you're shipping ground. You get all kinds of freight surcharges otherwise for large/heavy boxes.
@@FlippingJunk so its actually cheaper. This way it is easier for the UPS to handle 5 lighter boxes then one large heavy box... THANK YOU.
TOTAL crap!
Can you ship boxes using USPS Ground Advantage or just poly-mailers?
You can use boxes, just not the free priority mail boxes.
@@FlippingJunk when are those options available to add signature and insurace? when you buying label? I didn't notice them.
What kinda scale do u use to weigh boxes
Just a digital scale. I think the one I use is still linked in the description.
I’m kind of a noob can you elaborate a little on what the calculated shipping means I’m afraid to select it bc it has such a large range.
@@FlippingJunk also wondering when I buy the shipping label from eBay is that how much I pay or do I have to pay again when I get to the post office?
The price swings can be $20 or more depending on how far they travel. An extra few ounces or an inch larger than expected can really multiply the price of the items if going across country. Calculated shipping will charge the buyer the correct amount wherever they are in the country.
That's all you pay when you buy from eBay. You also get a discount buying on eBay.
How do you show more than one shipping option on your listing in ebay?
There's an option in the shipping information area to add one when listing.
wait hold up, I can offer multiple options for shipping on my listings? I can't seem to figure out how to do this on google. Can anyone help? TIA!
just kidding, figured it out, can't believe I've been on eBay this long without figuring this out....!!! thank you Flipping Junk sir!!!!!!!
Can i send a dress by USPS Ground advantage?
Yes, that's fine.
the whole room your recording in is curved. explain this bubble effect please.
can someone please help me? last week i sold items through mercari with usps ground advantage using priority mail boxes. i went to the post office to print out paid labels using their kiosk-- fast forward, everything was delivered/went smoothly. today i tried to ship out more boxes doing the same thing except this time the kiosk was down. i went to the desk so one of the postal workers could print out labels and put them on my packages... and was told i was using the wrong boxes. they also told me "if you use these boxes they'll be returned to you". the postal worker then directed me to an area where i should purchases the "correct" boxes to ship my items. my question is, if what they were saying is true... why did my previous packages get delivered okay? am i being scammed into buying more boxes from them? please let me know!
Unfortunately, you can't use the free priority mail boxes and ship ground advantage. Your package before probably just wasn't caught by anyone.
Can customers choose whether they want Ground Advantage or Priority?
Yes, but only if that's the options you choose for them to pick.
Help I have 82 nice items I have sold 1 😢
Weeks
👍
Don't use calculated shipping. Always put a flat shipping rate a few dollars lower than it will be. Feels like a good strategy considering I'm usually a few dollars into something I'm flipping times 10 to 20
Hi, can you explain this a little more in detail, please, and do you offer free shipping to your customers?
What happens when you have to send far away or even international?
thx dude u r rate just went up,, hahaha
Link for baseball bat boxes? Got free ones from usps but now I met you lol
I was getting them on eBay, but the seller no long sells them. I've been wrapping them in big bubble wrap and putting them in a black garbage bag to ship.
Is shipping a tax write off?
Yep, in most cases.
