Some people are asking in the comments which other games I consider a melee slasher. Based on what I consider a definition of a melee slasher, the ONLY games that reside in this genre are: Chivalry: Medieval Warfare Chivalry 2 Mirage: Arcane Warfare Mordhau Renown (Early Accss) Mobius ( In Development) Ad Mortem (In Development) Any other titles like For Honor, Warhaven, or Mount and Blade I consider in different genres for a multitude of reasons that I hope the video explains.
@@nonanimeprofilepic I didn't feel the need to include Age of Chivalry since it's just a precursor to Chivalry: MW and I do not consider the other two games you mentioned melee slashers.
In dark and darker you use the attacks to attack around an enemies guard aswell. Which is why I consider it a slasher. Since manipulation is part of the offense and defense
In Dark and Darker, there is no reason to make an attack take longer to reach its target. Look back to one of my points "Manipulating attacks not just to aim, but to make them take less or more time to reach their target". While this is possible in Dark and Darker, the latter simply isn't part of the general gameplay.
@@SoterDave oh I was saying in my definition : ) I wasn’t saying you are wrong for your definition. I personally believe swing manipulation that provides an advantage against an opponents defense is what makes a slasher game. Sorry I didn’t clarify : )
Melee slashers have more in common with fighting games than traditional 3d games, but in a good way. I'd consider the genre a natural evolution of 2.5 and 3d fighting games. I wouldn't say kicks and jabs are fundamentally essential, however something to "break combat flow" is required just like it's required in every fighting game, kicks/jabs being the replacement for the "grappler" element. Initiative is a resource just like frame advantage is a resource, because initiative is just frame advantage. Advantage state is also more complex in melee slashers than in an average fighting game due to the inherent flexibility of the games and the way you can be in what is technically a frame advantaged state yet intentionally convert to frame disadvantage due to the mixup potential associated with that and have it be the right decision, for example. All it takes to be a melee slasher is essentially to "be a 3d fighting game defined by melee combat" with not even a slight nod to teamfighting, and you can say that both chiv 1 and mordhau toe more towards that line. Chiv 2's most interesting innovation is the existence of active parry to allow you to apply dueling mechanics to multiple targets simultaneously, converting Chiv 2 into the only "true" teamfighting game in the genre to be released right now, and hopefully offering a model for future teamfighting environments. Held parry is honestly the least interesting part of chiv 2.
Hey mate, just wanna say, I'm new to Chivalry 2 (played Chiv 1 like a decade ago) and after watching your clips(and Stridah), my KD has gone from like 1:3 to 2:1. Only lvl 31, but thank you very much. Appreciate it. 👍
Hey. I have a question, is playing chiv in 3rd person bad if I want to be competitive? I dunno, I really WANT to play the game 1st person because it looks way better, but I hate so much the fact that my field of view is not the same and I die a lot more than in 3rd person, because of ppl coming from the sides and I cant see them. And thats why Im doing much better in 3rd vs 1st. Especially when fighting outnumbered. So basically I just wanna know, from a good players perspective, are 1st person advantages greater than 3rd person disadvantages? Thanks
Generally people play 3rd person in the competitive community, but you can do just fine with either perspective. I say use what you feel comfortable in, but at the same time know that the majority of the competitive playerbase utilizes 3rd person.
mirage which is an older title. elderborn which is a more doom esc grusome game title that came out in 2020. mobius which is an upcoming game. You could even call dead island 2 a melee slasher because it encompasses the parameters dave mentioned in the video funnily enough. Like my boy dave said its a newer term but there is tons of projects upcoming that bare the title of melee slasher. Thats all that i can think of off the top of my head rn though.
@@SoterDaveWhy are the Mount and Blade games not included? I know the singleplayer is an entirely different thing, but the actual combat system fits imo.
One of the differences mentioned in a Chiv/Mord comparison video is that you can only block briefly in Mord and then there's a cooldown, which makes feints more effective compared to Chiv were you can just hold block until you run out of stamina. Thinking back to your prior video where you suggested training yourself to only block an attack rather than a kick... would it be a worthwhile exercise in Chiv 2 to configure block through Steam input to only allow a brief block before it auto-releases? Using it, I would need to time my blocks better and only block when it counts.
There's more than enough timing mecahnics in the competitive community through the use of counters. I do not think it would be worth it to configure your block to only work for a brief period of time.
So accorsmding to you those aren't melee slashers : Vermintide 2 ? Lunacid ? For honor ? What other game than Mordhau and Chiv are melee slashers then ?
Vermintide i'd say is very close to melee slasher, it has swing tracing, swing manipulation like accel and moveset combos, with push attacks to break guards, all these skills do translate through, The game Lunacid from the video i can find is old school RPG that put focus on roleplay action where you aim with ur crosshair most of times. And at last For Honor is not even a fighting game i'm gonna say it, distance control and footwork means nothing, the core mechanic is player rock paper scissors on 3 directions while strongest characters ignore this core rule.
You can't ignore mount & blade man, it even has damage calculation based on relative speed and proper hitbox detection on character and shields@@SoterDave
