As one of the four essential subject matters, this excercise is aimed at developing line quality and the sense of negative space. Хобби
I enjoyed the conversation between the two of you. Nice painting!
I love the back and forth dialog.
Henry, Thank you for sharing with us. I love the sensitivity of your orchid leaves.
The Strokes are IMPECCABLE!!!!
Thank you for the feedback. I will try to get more with dialog.
Some tips to beginners: 1)only use couple of drops of sumi ink for each small painting like this one; 2)load your brush with water first, then touch a little bit ink using the brush tip so it will start with dark stroke and then turns to lighter tones. The procedure, if any, is "clean the brush --> load lighter ink --> darker ink". You should repeat this procedure as your brush is exhausted.
In Chinese painting theory, there is saying, "Treasure your ink as gold" 惜墨如金. I always use as little as the black "gold" as possible. I would never dip my brush in the bottle.
Thank you Henry Li... I will conserve my ink from now on.
Lovely.
Really the best!! I am here trying to make orchids to decorate my house, but cant do anything!!!Is not in my soul I thing...Could U send one of this for me?? rsrsrsrs The real gold is your hands!!
Good question! It required mounting or backing and we do that after painting and before framing. Please search for silicone paper dry-mounting and you will see my videos about this process. Traditional wet mounting technique with flour paste is also OK but I'd use dry-mounting with silicone paper. See our web site BlueHeronArts for more info on Silicone Paper.
this is very relaxing! i love it! beautiful paintings!!! :)
@mathsfreakXXL I used bottled ink for this painting I think, but I do grind ink with inkstick for my other paintings sometimes.
Super, smukt🙂
Sorry, I don't. Generally speaking they call it "Chinese Orchid" in farmer's market here in Los Angeles. It looks just like "big grass" but with small flowers that smell great.
do you know the botanical name of this orchid?
great job!!!
The botanical name is Cymbidium ensifolium.
Beatiful ! again! , another good peace to learn from!
One question: Once the painting is done, what would be the best way to fixed at a frame in therms of support and glue?
Thanks for the video

what kind of a brush are you using?..........I've been practicing the wild orchid, and find it extremely hard.............would you recommend a combination sheep/wolf hair brush?
I might have used a bamboo and orchid brush, I think. Orchid require the brush with more flexibility than bamboo. Here is a good mixed hair brush I recommend www.blueheronarts.com/bonian-small-wolf-sheep-mixed-hair-brush-p-3835.html
thank you!
Really? I would suggest you mute the speakers if you need to watch this clip repeatedly:-)Thank you for your comments.
The woman talking is unnecessary in
My opinion
Henry, I have enjoyed several of your fine painting videos. But to have a woman's voice YAKKING in the background is totally unprofessional. I would have expected more from you. "Why you change your brush?......You always wash your brush?" These inane questions are so unnecessary. Why would you leave that annoying voice in there? I just don't know......
It was one of the first videos I did seven(7 years ago). Now we have real student asking such questions as you do in the latest videos. So please keep watching the 1000 more videos and just turn off the speaker on this one. Maybe I will replace the voice with music, should I?
Henry Li Thank you for your reply. I am sorry for criticizing you--I didn't notice the date of this video. Still though, her voice was annoying to me. After all these years, I would never ask you to go back and change one of your videos. As long as you are aware that this type of thing can be distracting for a student who really wants to concentrate on what you are saying......I would just leave it alone. Surely your newer videos have benefitted from your experience in making video productions. Thanks again, and a special thanks for showing me your talent and excellence with a brush!
Gil, thanks for your understanding and appreciation. Video making is an art of its own and my wife was the person behind the camera and I think she has kept quite since this one.:-)
