German Panzerwaffe guy here. Nope. K2 is better. Leopard 2 A7+ has a totally different concept (asymmetrical combat / urban combat) whereas Leopard 2 KWS III and K2 (which would have been comparable) have a DUELL (tank vs tank) layout
Actually the K2 probably passed it... People think too highly of the Leopard 2, don't get me wrong it's a good tank but a lot of tanks today already passed it you can't keep upgrading an old tank and expect it to be just as good as the new ones... The K2 and J10 are probably the best tanks out there... It doesn't mean they can't be beat by the other tanks such as Abrams, T-90, Merkava, Leopard 2 and such but if I had the option to choose for. Military I would pick them.
WarDogTheAwesome Yeah well....K2 has small turret so it can't be upgraded a lot. K1 has same problem so we make K2. K1's small turret can not hold powerful upgrade.
유기태 Usally size doesn't come as a real issue as long as it's not extreme so don't worry about it when the time comes it will have the upgrades needed... Or maybe Korea will just make a new tank.

The point is to get the best tanks we could afford and I know those are not cheap but they are very capable tanks. I think they will be good deterrent against any possible conflicts and very good line of defense from any ground attack. The option is between this tank and the T90S (another capable tank). I know the price could be an issue but for our own national security, there is no price. The quantity needed at least 200-300, enough to cover north and south borders with good firepower to stop anybody. The need is not just tanks, we anti-air missile systems, short, medium and long range. More warplanes, newer and more modern units.
I do agree, you have a point on that aspect. But its not our decision to make, when I first saw the K2, I liked the tank all the way, armor, firepower and mobility, also I liked the possibility of the long distance attack, and also excellent active protection against missiles. Its as you said a tank that could take a lot more upgrades in the future. I do like this tank better but its not in our hands to purchase them.
I am from Peru by the way, but its true the K2 is expensive and also no tested yet on the field. The other tank I saw was the Leopard 2A7, the newest model of the German tank. Impressive tank , if you have the chance to see it. I am not sure about price but it should be up there also. The other factor is availability of parts and support in case of an conflict. That's why I am not sure a good option would be a NATO tank, Chile has Great Britain support. I guess you will figure out what will happen if a confrontation starts. That's why, would prefer a no NATO tank.
Now, my friend, I do disagree with you. You don't know the state of the Peruvian Army and its not the best... with very old tanks and support vehicles, its a joke. The most modern tank we have is the T55 from back in the 70s and also AMX13, and M113 support vehicles. The only threats we have is from Ecuador and from Chile. I am more concerned about Chile than anything else. Their equipment is very modern and up to date. They have the Leopard 2A4 with the upgrades now to the 2A6. And also their air force have F16 second hand but they are very capable planes. We need a force to act as a deterrent against any aggression. Strong and modern tanks, that's we need to keep the balance of the region. Besides that, you said that generation 4 tanks could handle planes as well as tanks...well... the K2 and T90s do that, they are equipped with missiles capable to do both tasks.
+Antonio I see. Your country may need top class tanks like K2, M1A2, Leopard2A6. There have been already successful deals between peru and korea in military trade, so getting K2 black panther is not impossible, i think.
