Not only that but the demonstrator flowed from one position to the next, which is the form’s biggest strength. The counters were a bit form 5 but it works.
I think nearly all lightsaber forms have a sense of a somewhat organized style. The individual Jedi themselves are the ones that adapt and alter them in ways that breaks from the original forms.
The form does put emphasise on defense rather than offense. And it attacks using counters between openings the attacker presents. Also, this form is suitable for long duels as it preserve your stamina and health longer.
Not bad. There is an obvious focus on defense.
Telluriana Mystic all the form is.
Soresu was primarily focused on defense and waiting for your opponent to leave themself open to make a strike. Obi-Wan changed from Ataru to Soresu after watching his master get killed because Ataru was too aggressive and left him too vulnerable.
@@tonyhinojosa7710 that's semi true, it's not that ataru was too aggressive its that ataru is meant to be used with wide open spaces in mind, remember, Ataru is purely an offensive form assisted by force acrobatics. When Gon Jin faces Maul his form was at a disadvantage and cost Jin his life.
Tomas Rodriguez, and Jedi frowned on purely offensive lightsaber forms because of their aggressiveness because of their tendency to draw their practitioners dangerously close to the dark side if practiced too aggressively with too much passion. They weren't banned, with the exception of Juyo, but definitely frowned on.
Telluriana Mystic a Jedi used his the force for knowledge and defense, never for attack

Steps to a duel: Never look at your opponent's blade. Never step backwards. You can be easily tricked by watching the attacker's weapon, an experienced opponent will easily defeat you. Watch the torso to gauge movements. Stepping backwards allows you to be overwhelmed by a barrage of attacks, it also leaves you open for low strikes. Step forward or sideways when you parry. Keep a good low stance that allows you to move and May the Force be with You, always.

GENERAL Kenobi.
@@einflinkeswiesel2695 You are a bold one.
My only problem is the opening stance, everything else fits in the star wars description, why would a defensive form have a stance that quite literally says "kill me"
Open stance is needed when fighting in general. It’s to maintain balance and cover more ground.
@@NerdInked But it's a defensive form, meant for defense. A close right/left would be more effective stance than an open stance for a form focusing on defense.
Its so a Jedi has a open hand to use the force freely in conjunction with their lightsaber.
@@NerdInked Should have iterated my thoughts in more detail, i meant the stance where the blade is away from your body defending the orbit of the world you might inhabit instead of getting ready to deflect blaster bolts or melee attacks

@Starwarrior 7 wow you must be the smartest kid in your class. Did you put that one together yourself?
Here’s a hot take for you, form 2 and 3 and really the same concept but in different forms, I mean they both are about your opponent making mistakes and trying to outlast them by conserving energy, but form 3 does so by having the opponent attack them and tire themselves out until the slip up, and form 2 is about forcing your opponent to be constantly focused and either blocking or attacking with big motions while you don’t have to work with as much physical energy. The same idea done in different ways

Your style of Soresu looks good against the thrusts of Makashi I must say. Though Soresu keeps the blade in motion at all times I must say.
Asparus The Saiyan, which is why Obi-Wan was able to fend off Dooku's onslaught for as long as he did in Revenge of the Sith. Dooku was a master of Makashi and Obi-Wan was a master of Soresu. Obi-Wan was ultimately defeated because he had no defense against Force based attacks.
@@tonyhinojosa7710 Obi wan is confirmed to be the least force attuned jedi but it was his dedication to soresu that made him The master of the form.
"In every aspect of combat and in contrast to Form l's sweeping motions, Form III utilized tight, control led movements and a strict economy of action. This was key to the total defense of Soresu, as even the slightest extraneous motion risked leaving an opening for a blaster bolt, vibroblade or lightsaber to slip through. This caution applied not only to Soresu fighters' lightsaber movements, but to their entire body. Form III stances presented a minimal target to assailants, not only limited the opponent's avenues of attack, but reduced the area the Soresu practitioner had to defend with lightsaber parries and blocks"
Thank you for using the soundtrack from the real Star Wars. Thank you for showing such a beautiful demonstration
Short and sweet. I like this video, it makes sense and isn't bogged down with unnecessary talking. 10/10 video.

Dude, a piece of advice, never ever cross your feet while moving.

This is probably my favorite form cause I like the idea of avoiding getting hit altogether. Though that opening stance feel off and leaves one open.

RUclips recommended this to me. Does this mean I have to become a Jedi now?
yeah
To be honest, this looks practical, limited openings, in fact it reminds me of defensive practice in HEMA. Better than the sequels wild swinging like a Napoleonic infantry officer.
This is a very useful tutorial. I may have to study this for reference in some of my own videos.
So far, I've learned the first two forms, and now starting form 3, this is been a massive help for sure!
Actually,if you know form 2 you should use form 2,studing all forms will be useless
@@kater2310 that is unless you wish to study form 6, as it takes from all the prior forms
I can feel Obi-wan's presence grow ever stronger...
While not "true" to Obi Wan's Opening, a truly "defensive" opening stance would be the Japanese "Seigan No Kamae". This stance is often believed to have no openings from the front or side, due to the placement of the weapon, feet, and body weight/angle. Seigan No Kamae would work exceptionally well with the 4-basic "blocks" demonstrated in this video. Considering the blocks in this video require the weapon to be in front of your body, having an opening stance in which the weapon is furthest behind you, with your arm outreached, legs bent, and body weight on your backward foot makes ZERO sense.
I like to think of Form III similar to the martial arts form Wing-Chun. Close quarters, minimal movement, focus on defense, using the enemy's movements to your own advantage, and creation of openings. The later adaptations adding offense to Form III (i.e. Form V Djem So) is similar to how Bruce Lee modified Wing Chun into his own unique martial arts style, Jeet Kune Do
I love how im studying lightsaber techniques to help me in my vr lightsaber combat. Blade and Sorcery, here I come.

This is not Soresu at all. this is Form 1 defensive (aka real world basics) Soresu is built around momentum. A Soresu master moves the blade more then any other form other then perhaps Juyo. It seems to be the common misconception that the endurance form using tight minimalistic bladework means it hardly moves the saber. This is incorrect. A Form III practitioner at the height of their form keeps the blade in constant motion in a defensive patternt hat covers their body and adjusts to meet the blade of their opponent. While their opponent makes quick decided attacks and thrusts, a Soresu practitioner already has the blade in motion to parry before the other person has time to consider their own attack. This is the endurance form and is called such because moving a lightsaber does not actually require a lot of energy. Light wrist adjustments to re-direct a blades momentum is effortless allowing the wielder to not need the same amount of strength to deflect an attack.
Oh heavens thank you. I was reading comments thinking the same thing. When its said that oni wan barely moved to block a lightsaber it was because he was already in motion. He could anticipate his opponent and use minimal, even imperceptible movements in his already formed motion to party or counter.
@@omgzitsmilk Thanks lol, I'm easily annoyed by these things :P
@@Wand422 This guy's footwork is also terrible. You should never keep your feet so close together, or in a straight line as he does with his Makashi video - gives you an awful center of balance; have fun getting knocked down by an aggressive opponent. His Ataru video is the only one that shows decent footwork; always step back or to the side when dodging/defending - otherwise, plant your feet like a tree, roots apart. I've always been a big fan of forms I and IV (Shii-Cho and Ataru); simple, elegant, efficient, evasive, aggressive, accurate.
To show it in full motion would defeat the point of this video as it seems focused on teaching basics such as stance and basic parries of the form

Adam Plentl Leaning Soresu, it’s one of the hardest forms to learn both in real life and in Star Wars canon
@@TotallyNotTheRedComet69 Well in real life it doesn't exist. Its literally a made up bullshit form. So that might be why its hard to learn "in real life." Also in real life, everything this kid is doing is wrong and would result in immediate death from anyone with any actual experience handling a blade. He's literally just sliding around with collapsed knees everywhere. No structure. All of his "guards," are held way to close to his body. His wrists look like they're about to start crying at all times. It would be super easy to bind up with him, take his saber and push him over at any point. Its very evident he has never held an actual feder in his life.
So he's dedicated to internet bullshit I guess but that isnt really impressive.

I love this form it very real and as a katana wielding student reminds me a lot of our Prtical evade then attack. Looks basic but works.
For a defensive form, the starting stance kinda sucks
Not necessarily. The objective is to present a target, and bait the opponent into overextending. Soresu's strength being that presenting the hand, and then snapping back to intercept the blade, and draw the opponent into their opening trades, hopefully causing them to overbalance.
But it looks cool
