(At that point in the series, Tao still didn't even know Nick & Charlie were together still, so Charlie lied to him and said he got the bruise in the shower.) In the series he learns about it instantly so I guess he couldn't suggest the makeup right away or none of the actual hickey drama relative to the story would have been able to happen.
i laughed at the “why do they only use instagram dms” comment because most of my friends and i prefer to message each other that way vs regular texting. very realistic representation of their age group
It's terrifying to think that Charlie would have fainted and hit the floor had his instinct not have been to call out for Nick when he knew he was going to faint, that allowed Nick to actually be there when it happened to catch him. Fainting and falling full bodyweight onto a hard floor from standing is really dangerous.
I will say that I did have a fainting spell when I was alone in my apartment a long time ago when I lived alone and woke up with a gash on my forehead. It was from heat exhaustion and not from what Charlie was going thru but I do remember it taking a long time to figure out that I was starting to see things blurry before everything blacking out and waking up on the floor. I will say that scene was both triggering and in a way accurate of that feeling.

Those are the kinds of experiences I've had with my fainting in my life, often you can tell it's coming and get yourself down somewhere safe before it happens. If fainting can exist where you are completely alert one second and then completely out the next, that is terrifying, you don't even get any time to get yourself safe if you're alone.
I fainted in a classroom I was 13 coz sleep lacking, empty stomach, being bullied, watching the birth of a new born full of blood 😢on a big screen 🩸 … I crashed my head into the wall. And then Opening my eyes 👀 and saw only feets… didn’t realise what was happening at all. Feeling so sick 🤢 My head was as bloody as the new born on film. Horrible experience. 😢

I also loved it how when Harry & his friend was trying to get in the party how people was staring at Harry disgustingly by the door and how they all agreed & cheered Charlie right after Charlie shuts the door on their faces. Shows how supportive they all are that they are not going to let any homophobics in.

Ben is really HOPing (His last name is Hope) that he had a chance of getting Charlie back,when Charlie is not going to dump Nick (Charlie’s perfect boyfriend) to be with Ben again after Ben basically use Charlie as a human pet. Ben is really delusional if he thinks he can get Charlie back. He even tried to make nice by trying to start a conversation with Charlie & purposely sat next to him in order to do that at dinner when last season he pretends not to know Charlie in front of people. I literally thought when Ben said “I haven’t talked to you properly for ages. How was your first day in Paris?” Wow Ben you literally just gave away that you have known Charlie for a while & know who he is the fact you are trying to talk to him now shows how Ben is desperately wants Charlie back if he is going to stop pretending that he doesn’t know Charlie right then & there. Ben might have some reasons & can explain why he did those terrible things to Charlie but it DOESN’T EXCUSE THEM. Ben still did it and what kind of a excuse Ben called by calling his attempted assault on Charlie saying it was just a misunderstanding & he was going through personal problems. That not a excuse to put your hands on someone while also pinning them against the wall to force yourself onto him when Charlie kept saying “Stop it”.

This may be something that was different in the original Nick and Charlie novella (written pre-Heartstopper), but in the revised canon-compliant one, Charlie says that although Harry is better than he used to be, he and Nick still think he’s a massive knob and they haven’t forgiven him. In the graphic novel, that is how they resolve it when they find out it happened. Tao suggests he borrows some makup from the girls and Tara and Darcy come to their room and help him cover it! In the novel, he hides the fact it's a hickey even to his friends, lying to Tao that he "slipped in the shower", so they don't know it's something that even needs hiding at first. Vs. in the series Tao finds out what it is instantly, but doesn't suggest the makeup. *As someone below also added, he doesn't tell Tao because at that point in the Paris trip in the graphic novel, Tao STILL didn't know that Nick & Charlie were even together, it was one of the drama's throughout the trip. They really changed up the timeline of Tao's story in the series.

I hadn't read the graphic novels so I've been going in to show blind with the intention of reading them afterwards in order not to sway me one way or the other. Even though it's been more than a couple of decades since I graduated high school I remember all the teenage girls trying every which way of getting rid of covering up acne aside from hickeys. Lol. On the days for school pictures girls were always offering the boys concealer to cover up any zits before the picture was taken and if the boys were smart they would allow the girls to do it.
Isaac had more dialog in that exchange with Harry than he did in all of Season 1. I think his character is still underdeveloped, so it will be interesting to see how it goes for him.

i had such a high expectation for this season and especially bcs of the paris trip since everyone was talking abt it, i haven’t read the books so i didn’t know a thing, and they DID NOT disappoint!! it was eeeverything honestly, it has some though moments, romance, friendship, a party, discovery and realizations. it was everything i wanted ngl!!❤

as someone who hasn't read the comics at all, but still gets slapped across the face with nick being Painfully Relatable every time he's on screen - with Everything, but specifically the stuff with his dad hit so hard. it felt so weird, seeing somebody else put my exact feelings into words - but it's nice to know i'm not alone, and other people have similarly complicated relationships with their dads, as much as they love them. on the note of relatability: my best friend once compared me to tao and oh my god do i suddenly get what they mean, holy moly. i absolutely love him this season. if you told me one of my favourite characters in a majority queer show would be the token cishet ally, i'd never believe you, but alas, here we are! (and i, too, would risk it all for yasmin finney)
This showwwwwww. These two are probably my favorite episodes. I finally have something I relate to closely in this show, Nick’s relationship with his dad mirrors mine almost EXACTLY. I’m in my 30s now and have processed a lot of the trauma he left me with, but it’s healing in a way to see it on screen like this.

The sober thought saying is definitely true being drunk just enhances everything and you have more confidence and less care to say what you actually want or feel, seen it plenty of times in person. Also the Charlie fainting scene did it for me just wait😭 I knew Harry’s apology was trash because never really means it Ik there’s people who aren’t great at apologies but still manage to explain that they’re not good at saying them.
I don’t know what Ben would give to be Nick in the moment. You make a good point that Ben would literally wanted to be the one to give Charlie a hickey and would want to do the kiss dare (Despite him denying the dare & leaving but I think Ben was either leaving so Charlie wouldn’t have to do the dare or for himself so that he could pretend not to know Charlie again) I don’t know how Ben got invited to the party but besides Nick I’m pretty sure Charlie’s friends doesn’t know about Ben & Charlie’s history/past together because if they did Ben definitely wouldn’t be invited. And besides Ben wasn’t partying despite watching them play truth or dare,he was either drinking while standing in a corner to secretly watch Charlie or was just being there because he needed a drink since Ben properly has a lot on his mind. I could see how much regret Ben has and how he misses Charlie that it hurts him seeing him with Nick directly in his eyes & the way he stares at Charlie creepily. What would Ben do if he were to get back with Charlie & make sure Charlie doesn’t break up with him?

Yeah, I think they didn't put it in the show because it was such a tiny detail and it was kind of just a funny ending to the hickey storyline but it wasn't an absolutely necessary detail to have added to the show ... Like things will still play out as they should even if that little detail wasn't there... I think due to time they just had to cut out the ending of the hickey storyline. So yeah, it did make me a little bit sad that that storyline didn't end exactly how it played out in the comics but ultimately it's a very tiny detail that's not super important so I also understand why they left it out.
Great review. I think introducing so many additional queer characters detracts from the "nick and charlie" story line a bit. But kit and joe just get better and better! They are so talented. Sad they didnt film season 3. Seems nuts to have to wait up to 2 years.
This show is such a good rebuttal the common argument against having gay characters in movie/tv. "Why can't two guys just be friends? Why do they have to be lovers?" It's such a bullshit argument because it's not mutually exclusive. Charlie has both strong male friendships, especially with Tao, and a male lover. You can have both and it be fine.
One thing that doesn't get mentioned because it's seamless in the story line is that Kit Connor was forced out due to the gay-baiting issue, and so I feel what's happening with Nick is reflecting what Kit also went through, but more dramatized.

Yes! The elements of friendship and chosen family are so beyond. Few shows get it right like this one does.
I also come to realize that when the kid dared Charlie to kiss Ben you could see how much people & Charlie IMMEDIATELY DISAGREED on that because it’s either because Imogen is now Ben’s ex & it would definitely be awkward for her ex to be kissing someone else after they broke up.
And if Ben were to kiss Charlie,it would LITERALLY BE THE FIRST TIME after when Ben tried to assault Charlie by forcefully kissing him. Does Charlie’s friends know about Ben & Charlie’s past/history together and how Ben used Charlie as a human pet. Because I’m pretty they would question on why Ben is so obsessed with Charlie.
The way how Nick & Charlie both looked uncomfortable when the kid dared him to kiss Ben,you could see how Nick & Charlie both wouldn’t want Ben to kiss Charlie after everything.
The biggest issue I had with the hickey problem is did none of the girls have some concealer. That is the one thing I found unbelievable.
In the graphic novel, that is how they resolve it when they find out it happened. Tao suggests he borrows some makup from the girls and Tara and Darcy come to their room and help him cover it! In the novel, he hides the fact it's a hickey even to his friends, lying to Tao that he "slipped in the shower", so they don't know it's something that even needs hiding at first. Vs. in the series Tao finds out what it is instantly, but doesn't suggest the makeup.
*As someone below also added, he doesn't tell Tao because at that point in the Paris trip in the graphic novel, Tao STILL didn't know that Nick & Charlie were even together, it was one of the drama's throughout the trip. They really changed up the timeline of Tao's story in the series.

It's a funny ending to the hickey storyline but it isn't ABSOLUTELY necessary for the rest of the story to play out as it should, you know?

I hadn't read the graphic novels so I've been going in to show blind with the intention of reading them afterwards in order not to sway me one way or the other. Even though it's been more than a couple of decades since I graduated high school I remember all the teenage girls trying every which way of getting rid of covering up acne aside from hickeys. Lol. On the days for school pictures girls were always offering the boys concealer to cover up any zits before the picture was taken and if the boys were smart they would allow the girls to do it.

i had such a high expectation for this season and especially bcs of the paris trip since everyone was talking abt it, i haven’t read the books so i didn’t know a thing, and they DID NOT disappoint!! it was eeeverything honestly, it has some though moments, romance, friendship, a party, discovery and realizations. it was everything i wanted ngl!!❤

Because Ben already used Charlie enough for kissing already,they do not need to kiss after all that has happened between them. as someone who hasn't read the comics at all, but still gets slapped across the face with nick being Painfully Relatable every time he's on screen - with Everything, but specifically the stuff with his dad hit so hard. it felt so weird, seeing somebody else put my exact feelings into words - but it's nice to know i'm not alone, and other people have similarly complicated relationships with their dads, as much as they love them.
on the note of relatability: my best friend once compared me to tao and oh my god do i suddenly get what they mean, holy moly. i absolutely love him this season. if you told me one of my favourite characters in a majority queer show would be the token cishet ally, i'd never believe you, but alas, here we are! (and i, too, would risk it all for yasmin finney)
This showwwwwww. These two are probably my favorite episodes. I finally have something I relate to closely in this show, Nick’s relationship with his dad mirrors mine almost EXACTLY. I’m in my 30s now and have processed a lot of the trauma he left me with, but it’s healing in a way to see it on screen like this.

The sober thought saying is definitely true being drunk just enhances everything and you have more confidence and less care to say what you actually want or feel, seen it plenty of times in person. I don’t know what Ben would give to be Nick in the moment. You make a good point that Ben would literally wanted to be the one to give Charlie a hickey and would want to do the kiss dare (Despite him denying the dare & leaving but I think Ben was either leaving so Charlie wouldn’t have to do the dare or for himself so that he could pretend not to know Charlie again)
I don’t know how Ben got invited to the party but besides Nick I’m pretty sure Charlie’s friends doesn’t know about Ben & Charlie’s history/past together because if they did Ben definitely wouldn’t be invited. And besides Ben wasn’t partying despite watching them play truth or dare,he was either drinking while standing in a corner to secretly watch Charlie or was just being there because he needed a drink since Ben properly has a lot on his mind.
I could see how much regret Ben has and how he misses Charlie that it hurts him seeing him with Nick directly in his eyes & the way he stares at Charlie creepily. What would Ben do if he were to get back with Charlie & make sure Charlie doesn’t break up with him?

Yeah, I think they didn't put it in the show because it was such a tiny detail and it was kind of just a funny ending to the hickey storyline but it wasn't an absolutely necessary detail to have added to the show ... Like things will still play out as they should even if that little detail wasn't there... I think due to time they just had to cut out the ending of the hickey storyline. So yeah, it did make me a little bit sad that that storyline didn't end exactly how it played out in the comics but ultimately it's a very tiny detail that's not super important so I also understand why they left it out.

Great review. I think introducing so many additional queer characters detracts from the "nick and charlie" story line a bit. But kit and joe just get better and better! They are so talented. Sad they didnt film season 3. Seems nuts to have to wait up to 2 years.
This show is such a good rebuttal the common argument against having gay characters in movie/tv. "Why can't two guys just be friends? Why do they have to be lovers?" It's such a bullshit argument because it's not mutually exclusive. Charlie has both strong male friendships, especially with Tao, and a male lover. You can have both and it be fine.
One thing that doesn't get mentioned because it's seamless in the story line is that Kit Connor was forced out due to the gay-baiting issue, and so I feel what's happening with Nick is reflecting what Kit also went through, but more dramatized.
