BRIDESHEAD REVISITED visual love poem for the doomed love between Charles and Sebastian. Pictures from Brideshead Revisited (Granada TV, 1981). Music by ABC.
I have watched this clip over and over. The editing could only have been done by someone who truly loves Brideshead, Charles and sebastion. The last scene is particularly poignant...Charles praying and some beautiful shots of sebastion. Thankyou for this wonderful vid/
Such a beautiful video!! An amazing job. I loved watching it until it was over and I realised I was actually crying! I just think it's so sad how Charles and Sebastian's relationship or friendship or whatever it is they have is so wonderful and then just spirals downward. I get so emotional when I think about it!
What a song! Grew up with this in the 80's and it is still a classic. Video just marries to the tune so well. Skinny jean boy bands of today, that is how to write and perform a ballad!
Anthony Andrews was a first love for me: Ivanhoe, Scarlet Pimpinel, this serial, and now he stills having this charming that only great gentelmen have. I love it.
the best fucking tv serie of all time. A lovestory, sad. sebastian, i was in love with him. I saw the show in the 90s, i was 11, and fell in lov with sebastian, just like Charles did.
Don't know if I've told you (before) how miraculous this is. One of a kind and desperately needed. The series left us hungry and sad ... but improved..
So when the music began I was a little nervous that this was going to be kinda corny so I read the comments first and saw one about how this actually looks like an 80s music video. You know what... this was amazingly well done and really does look like a video intended to go with the song! :D Definitely will come back to this often, as well. Put a smile on my face for sure. The little recap at the end as if Charles is remembering was perfect, hard to do a before and after since so much time passes in the series. I often wonder how much weight Anthony Andrews lost to film the last scenes Sebastian is in. The scene when he's in the carriage at the beginning just does it for me every time, so pompous, so elegant, such a diva. These actours really nailed it with the subtle body language and eye contact all throughout. It makes their chemistry so believable.
+J Jackson Anthony Andrews best role, actually. I think that he made one of the most, beautyful, heartbreaken, performence i have ever seen in any actor. He was Sebastian, he was so god damn beautyful, and i cryed and shared his pain. He was really blown me away, especially when he was drunk. A scene i remember, was when Sebastian, are sitting in the window, he drinks, and has a long coat over him, and he don´t care any more, and charles are knocking at his door several times, but Sebaatian, want to be alone. That scene was so moving. But Jeremy was also good, but Anthony somehowl stole the scene i think. sadly Anthony never made a unique performence again, i don´t know what happent to him.
Just found this and love it! Couple clips I wish had been in here but that's ok. Love when they are talking about Antoine having joined them on their trip and Charles recognizes him. In the midst of Sebastian's misery I love that glance towards Charles followed a cool smirk, like we know something they don't know! And when he's about to shut the window and he's standing there woozy and smiles at him first before he gets sick. It took watching it a few times to pick up on the fact that the next day at lecture Charles is sketching Sebastian in his book, puking in the window with a cherub flying down with a bag of ice for his head. It tickled me pink seeing that.
i wanted to thank you for putting scenes of this series together with "all of my heart"... because i wonder if without that i ever would have stumbled over it otherwise! i just managed to get my hands on a copy and now its one of my favourite series.. i am already craving for the book! you chose the scenes so well.. so absofuckinglutely well fitting to the lovely moments in the song! i was also very surprised you even chose this so short scene of sebastian flipping his hair back. lovely video!!
Was very surprised to read in Vanity Fair that came today that someone is attempting a film remake of this story. The tv miniseries was perfect. I can't see Emma Thompson improving on Claire Bloom's Lady Marchmain. Target has a 25th Anniversary edition of the series with lots of extras on sale.
I believe was 11 years old when for the fist time, I was attractive to this television series . I was living in Mexico. I always liked Charles & Sebastian.
Still an unbelievable work to combine the pathos hope and love embodied by the words of Waugh and the Granada production. In the era it was not about a gay or straight love, it was the closeness that one could have with another which was almost species specifically forbidden... either way, I still find this effort incredibly moving.
a seminal tv experience while coming out in teenage years - even if charles and sebastian were explicitly written as queer, their relationship was certainly open to that interpretation, esp. as irons and andrews played it. and editing the clip to abc's best song - perfect!
While I love all of this vid and its delicate beauty, I want to single out 0:25 to 0:29 for praise. As they close the gate to the garden to the lyric "no happy ever after," I see an allusion to the Fall, the expulsion from Eden, the loss of youth, and innocence, and perfect joy. The novel tells that story: Brideshead is Charles's Eden. This vid is fantastic.
Excellent. I do not think the story portrays them as 'lovers', just a profound, intense friendship, He was in awe of him at first, puzzled somewhat, but enjoyed their friendship. I do wish he had stayed with Julia though!!! Good song to put to the clips, thanks for posting
I feel so sorry for Sebastian ! What a life ! He had got everything but did not know how to enjoy it at all . A lot of Aristocrats around the world too ended up being like him . Even in my country the aristocrasy and thier ancestral property was lost due to excessive drinking !
Personally, if I didn't know much about "Brideshead Revisited", but wanted to learn more, I'd read the novel first, then buy or rent the mini-series. Both all well worth the effort.
What a fantastic edit. Love the choice of song and how you've taken time to fit the scenes to it. Missed the series when aired (slightly too young?) but I'm looking forward to watching it soon. But don't know whether or not to wait until after the film (UK release on my birthday!)..??? Or try to read the book first? Eeek!
All who insist there is no sexual undertone in this novel between he and Sebastian... please read "Mad World" by Paula Burne. The characters in this story are based on numerous people from Waugh's real life. Lord Hugh Lygon was the primary inspiration and Waugh was definitely noted to have had a sexual relationship with him at Oxford, and Hugh *was* gay. This topic just isn't as simple as we try to make it in 2014 and coming from 1945 based on stuff happening in the early 20s it was all even less cut and dry. Watching this video immediately after concluding the series helps sum up the emotions and recap. I love it. The song is not sad but it's not happy either. It's wistful and hopeful and though the person is missing the one who held their heart, life still goes on, not without always remembering though and longing for it.
+J Jackson their is a sexual, undertone, anyone can see that. But thats what is the elegance of the serie, that what they felt stay in side of them self. Especially Charles is deeply in love with sebastian, the looks, and what he says about him. People whogh say that way a not in love, well they just don´t understand the story.
Love the way u have summarized it. When I was watching the series, I could only conclude that Charles always lived with Sebastian in his memories after Sebastian was gone and kept longing for him. His relationship with Julia was an outcome of that longing, or even Celia for that matter
@discobean54 I don't think there is a sexual relationship between them because of the scene when Sebastian is taking aa bath and Charles comes in, Sebastian moves to cover his genitals.
I think you can only really understand BR from the Catholic point of view out of which it was written. Decadence and moral decay do not lead to the happiness that Sebastian desired. The only peace that would come to him was in serving others, first in his relationship with the German, and ultimately in serving the monastery in Tunisia. As Cordelia says peace only comes from holiness and holiness only comes from suffering and repentance.
Very well done! You must be a true fan of the novel and series. Excellent ending! Wow! How many exclamation marks can one use in one comment? Thank you ever so much.
You must be thinking of something else, that doesn't happen in the televised version of "Brideshead Revisited", which is what this is. I haven't seen the film version, so can't comment on it.
What annoys me about Brideshead Revisited is that it was kind of a love story between Charles and Sebastian for half of it...then ythey just went in a different direction and us poor suckers who were invested in the love story had no satisfaction. Poor form. It was a subtle love story but it was love.
i was 11 in teh 90s saw this and fell in love with sebastian, in partically. I have never found out if charles and sebastian was actually in love with eachother, and they did´nt want to admitt it? maybe thats why sebastian, ran away, and started to drink
This captures well the decadent lifestyle of these two men and how they both lose all their promise for productive and happy lives by giving in to a life of indulgence. Sebastian becomes an alcoholic and presumably dies an ignoble and anonymous death in distant and primitive north africa. Charles is forced into a fairly miserable life as a soldier. Both find their only peace and happiness in the Catholic faith. Schooled in suffering they learn to long for heaven.
Great collection of scenes! But I noticed some clips that I don't remember seeing on my DVD version (25th anniversary collectors edition). How much did they cut?!
@MYCALNEWS - I believe it was platonic love between them too and that they both enjoyed the innocence of it. However one day they would have to make choices- Charles made 'realistic' choices but Sebastian couldn't face having to make choices.
A massive over sight to drop Aloysious to the cutting room floor, his cannon of work is up there with greats , Rupert , Paddington, etc I raise a glass to you Aloysious and hope to our sweet lord baby jesus you beat your drugs problem,i cant bare see you go the same way as Hammy the hampster. Heart breaking!
despite my young age in the 90s, i saw this serie in the age of 11-12 i think, and just fell in love with sebastian, and the theme,. But after sebastian was in the serie more, it became fuc...............boring
What memories! Watching Brideshead, listening to the Lexicon of Love, and being 16 with my tight skin and beautiful face! Youth is ours for a season.
You are so right!
I have watched this clip over and over. The editing could only have been done by someone who truly loves Brideshead, Charles and sebastion. The last scene is particularly poignant...Charles praying and some beautiful shots of sebastion.
Thankyou for this wonderful vid/
I like the facial expressions of Sebastian . Anthony Andrews is an amazing actor !
Such a beautiful video!! An amazing job. I loved watching it until it was over and I realised I was actually crying! I just think it's so sad how Charles and Sebastian's relationship or friendship or whatever it is they have is so wonderful and then just spirals downward. I get so emotional when I think about it!
Visited Castle Howard last spring. Such a magical place. No wonder Charles loved it.
A beatiful combination of the best things of the 80's - british popmusic and Brideshead Revisited. This is what youtube is about!!
Absolutely ripping vid - couldn't be better. Series made me cry but this video.....breaks my heart into pieces.
I love it.
I will forever love this.
I always watch this when I’m happy. When I’m sad, I watch it to get happy again! Beautiful 😃👌🏻
THIS IS BRILLIANT
the best fucking tv serie of all time. A lovestory, sad. sebastian, i was in love with him. I saw the show in the 90s, i was 11, and fell in lov with sebastian, just like Charles did.
How could one not fall in love with Sebastian? I hear you sweetie.
I see this video 20 times every day. I love the song, the scenes, the great work of the actors and the feeling they transmet to me.
Only LOVE !!!!
that was bloody brilliant...great song and a deeply emotional tv series...well done
Simply sublime. I cannot believe that something so lovingly created could inspire so much bile. Watch and listen...
I agree. I'm glad the series is so faithful to the book and have the former on DVD. It's well worth watching it all again - and again!
Don't know if I've told you (before) how miraculous this is. One of a kind and desperately needed. The series left us hungry and sad ... but improved..
one of the greatest youtube videos I've ever seen. seriously.
Back again...sad day in our family and I just wanted to see this.
This is so beautiful and yet heartbreaking at the same time...very moving.
Brilliant!
No other 80s productions rival "Lexicon of Love" or "Brideshead Revisited".
Wonderful!! Well done you. It makes me feel all emotional. In fact, I think I'm going to burst! It makes me feel all young and misunderstood again!

I re visit this often.... too good

The lexicon of love by abc is an awesome album and this song from it is just beautiful
i wanted to thank you for putting scenes of this series together with "all of my heart"... because i wonder if without that i ever would have stumbled over it otherwise! i just managed to get my hands on a copy and now its one of my favourite series.. i am already craving for the book!
you chose the scenes so well.. so absofuckinglutely well fitting to the lovely moments in the song! i was also very surprised you even chose this so short scene of sebastian flipping his hair back. lovely video!!
2 of my favorite's mixed...great job..
Back again...love it
A modern minstrel show. How wonderful.
Was very surprised to read in Vanity Fair that came today that someone is attempting a film remake of this story. The tv miniseries was perfect. I can't see Emma Thompson improving on Claire Bloom's Lady Marchmain. Target has a 25th Anniversary edition of the series with lots of extras on sale.
good song choice. I love to Anthony
Definitely watch the series first. Brilliant

I believe was 11 years old when for the fist time, I was attractive to this television series . I was living in Mexico. I always liked Charles & Sebastian.
Great tune. ABC are great!
Still an unbelievable work to combine the pathos hope and love embodied by the words of Waugh and the Granada production. That was really good. Jesus, that miniseries made me cry too much. It was so complicated and tragic.

ooo! the clips fit exakt to eachothers and to the music! very good! N-I-C-E-!
Excellent! Perfect song - it actually looks like a video from the early 80s! Lol. x
Utterly beautiful.

wonderful !!
Thank you for this, this is very lovely :)
Well done for using this song for the video poem. Its so apt! You should send it to ITV and it might prompt them to show the series again!
beautiful
I found that when you mute the audio of this, it goes along surprisingly well with Green Day's "Wake Me Up When September Ends".
Yes, that Greek thing. The writer, E.W. seems in love with every image, moment and exchange, pure artistry. Granada did themselves proud.
Excellent. I do not think the story portrays them as 'lovers', just a profound, intense friendship, He was in awe of him at first, puzzled somewhat, but enjoyed their friendship. I do wish he had stayed with Julia though!!! Good song to put to the clips, thanks for posting
Charles is clearly fascinated by Sebastian like Nick is fascinated by Gatsby
wow this is great!!!
Powerful!
I had the good fortune of visiting Castle Howard and seeing the racks of costumes and even Aloysius.
sebastian was so beautyful.
I feel so sorry for Sebastian ! What a life ! He had got everything but did not know how to enjoy it at all .
A lot of Aristocrats around the world too ended up being like him . Even in my country the aristocrasy and thier ancestral property was lost due to excessive drinking !
How can anyone not fall head over heals inlove with anthony andrews (sebastian)
Classic!!!!
i agree totally with you...
totally appropriate music.captures the sadness, escapism and romance of the series. sebastian was gay and hopelessly in love with charles. true?
Personally, if I didn't know much about "Brideshead Revisited", but wanted to learn more, I'd read the novel first, then buy or rent the mini-series. Both all well worth the effort.
i do have a good close friend named sebastian. what a wondrous coincidence!

georgous string section!
I remember jeremy irons in playaway singing with brian cant. hahahahaha geez, i guess we all have to start somewhere...
There was a 1981 miniseries and a very good movie a few years ago. ^^ The newer movie makes the Charles/Sebastian dynamic pretty much canon...
no, sorry, its ABC from their debut album the Lexicon of Love which I have, but check wikipedia if you dont believe..
awesome, this made me cry. i just read the book and it made me cry too... =,)
I love 01:50-01:51, Sebastian part...
I was a philosophy major--so, yeah, I've read it many times. Allegory of the cave? Good point.
hey come on - this is by far the most appropriate non-original soundtrack. It's contemporary and fits in every sense.
Irons was awesome in teh remake of the film Lolita...lucky dog got to spend time with Miss Swain.
Very well done! You must be a true fan of the novel and series. Excellent ending! Wow! How many exclamation marks can one use in one comment? Thank you ever so much.

sebastian, so cute, charming, sexy, he is a charactor that you just want to give a big huck, and say that you love him. LOVE YOU SEBASTIAN
Thank God. Someone to take my mind off Jack and Ennis for awhile.
true
But the TV version of Brideshead is such an 80s production!
Joy, my friend, joy. Redemption and joy.
Watch Hal Hartley's AMATEUR to understand.
i was 11 in teh 90s saw this and fell in love with sebastian, in partically. I have never found out if charles and sebastian was actually in love with eachother, and they did´nt want to admitt it? maybe thats why sebastian, ran away, and started to drink

I am reading brideshead for my lit class. Can anyone help me with the philosophy of Brideshead?
shit love you guys
A massive over sight to drop Aloysious to the cutting room floor, his cannon of work is up there with greats , Rupert , Paddington, etc
I raise a glass to you Aloysious and hope to our sweet lord baby jesus you beat your drugs problem,i cant bare see you go the same way as Hammy the hampster.
Heart breaking!
What is the name of this film? I know who are the actors but I do not know the film.
Does that make "All of my Heart" an inappropriate choice of song for the video?
Whom play this song? May sombody tell me?
Thanks
And Aloysious hardly figured.
C'mon! The bear needs a good agent!
its ABC
its ABC not bowie
The new movie really cheapens the relationship between Charles and Sebastian.
despite my young age in the 90s, i saw this serie in the age of 11-12 i think, and just fell in love with sebastian, and the theme,. But after sebastian was in the serie more, it became fuc...............boring
hurrah henry.. or should that be henrietta ??
