The 5th gen is baby steps in the right direction. That 4th gen was basically a minivan without the sliding passenger doors. The 3rd gen is still my favorite of the Pathfinders. For offroading, I'd take that old 2nd gen over the 5th gen. If I want a family hauler that can go up to Tahoe in the snow for ski weekends, I'd take the 5th gen. I would *not* take that 5th gen offroad though. I would have no confidence in it surviving without expensive damage and some serious recovery efforts. "Pathfinder" hasn't been an appropriate name for the 4th and 5th gen, but I think people might recoil against a "Mallfinder" or "Soccerhauler" moniker. ;-)

  • @AMetalWorks

Technically the 2 door is the first gen. There was never a 2 door/four door option. Also the rear seat does recline in the wd21. Yes the auto trans is trash, yes the engine is VERY reliable. One thing to note, the wd21 interior is actually really well made. I have a 91 and the seats were in great shape in 2010 when I swapped them out. I now have the interior out pf a 94 and again other than being dirty it's in extremely good shape for 27 year old materials. To tears or cracks. Another thing to note is that they felt very under powered even with the V6 option. However I'm still running the original engine 30 years later.
If I'm to be 100% honest I'm not a big fan of any nissan Pathfinder. Mine is heavily modified for rock crawling. It's definitely a unique platform for that and that's why I keep it. However I built it because I found a running and driving one for $500 and I wanted an smaller old school SUV. When comparing the WD21 to any of the other Pathfinder generations i'd stick with the WD21 because I don't see a point in having "4wheel drive" if it's not a real 4 wheel drive system and truly built to go offroad. The stock wd21 is actually an extremely good performer off road.

I hate texting drivers. Both drivers ran red lights and were distracted while texting. Both dangerous driving causing bodily harm charges and both guilty.
I am still dealing with injuries from the first accident, basically will be for the rest of my life. The second one left me a little sore the next few days, that’s it. The first I was in a coma for 3 days, the second, they made me stay in the hospital overnight because of the lingering injuries from the first accident. Now I want airbags. I still drive my classic vehicles, even traded my 2020 GT500 for a 67 Chevelle SS 386 4 speed with very low miles and all of the history from the very beginning for the car. All original with all repairs done with GM parts. I got a 2015 Mustang GT Automatic as well that was mint and sold it to my cousin who had been looking for a cheaper car he could treat as a weekend show & shine car. The Mustang GT is mint with less than 17,000 miles on it. The cousin is very happy.
I drive a 21 Ridgeline daily. Safest truck on the road!! The most comfortable as well. Keep a 21 F150 Lariat PowerBoost (the one replacing the one in the accident) for off-roading and heavy towing.

No.. what you NEED to compare is the 2008 version with the 4.6 L V8 in the 4 wheel drive version. The torque in that vehicle was outstanding, it took us into the Ozarks without breaking a sweat, it's a HELL of a capable off-roader. The interior was cloth, not totally utilitarian for the time but certainly not plush either, but damn.. .it's the one to compare to every subsequent version IF doing more than driving through suburbia is what you're interested in doing with at least a decent interior comfort. BTW it had AMAZING acceleration. Ask the Audi S6 that couldn't get his entire car past me in a quarter mile.

Have to say the old D21 based Pathfinder still wins in my book. Living in the country all my life I can tell you that washed out spring roads after run off can get ruts and squishy and the extra clearance on the old Pathfinder would be much nicer than scraping the bottom and high centering the new one.

I like the appearance of the new one, I don't like the lack of ground clearance and the fact the did away with the rear locker. It is good they went back to the aitomatic

Love those old pathfinders but for a new vehicle that one actually looks pretty nice, much improved over the previous Gen.

I vastly prefer those old square body designs on trucks compared to modern trucks. I'd never buy an old Nissan with an automatic transmission though; and frankly I'm not sure I'd buy a new one with an automatic transmission.

🤯 I have a 1994 Nissan Pathfinder XLT , BEST , I just replaced the original motor, how many miles you SAY, 1,823,556 MILES.
The original motor is in good spikes and I'm rebuilding the original motor.. and it still has it's original transmission 👍

New Zealand. Years ago we had two 1st Generation and both ended up as scrap. l found they were pretty bad overall with poor diesel economy (7K's/litre) being their main problems. Dismal power, head gasket, brake and gearbox issues plagued these vehicles which is why we now pay the Toyota tax. Our Pathfinder rusted on the door window sills (mild steel under the black vinyl is ss on other makes) and prone to rusting under the back seat. Chassis flexing with heavy usage sent many to scrap. The front doors were straight from the pickup version so they were huge and at the expense of the back doors (note the poor foot door access and the intrusion of the wheel arches in back). Seating in the back is poor and you can't get three adults in back seat due to the wheel arch intrusion. The back door handle is too high for small kids to reach and spare wheel heavily affects rear vision. The biggest problem was the fume intrusion into the interior and it appeared to come from the vents so it was quietly poisoning the occupants. Off road performance was surprisingly good with fresh tyres and its poor ground clearance wasn't as terrible as you would expect it to be.
Would l buy another D21?..... never again, not while 4-runner/Surfs are still available, just pay the tax, its worth it. l am currently running a 1989 Surf and a 2007 Prado (both petrols) and these two trucks have been bullet proof compared to the Pathfinder/Terrano's
On the strength of the Nissan Pathfinder track record over the last 35 years, l wouldn't risk a gen 5 Pathfinder..... no to both of these trucks but if given a free Pathfinder, then it would be a yes,,,,, free is always good with Nissan 4WD's

Prefer the older one hands down.
Made to go off-road and explore.
The newer one however, they could have made the new one much better and more aimed towards the 4X4 / camping community. It seems the new one is another mallfinder with slight off-road capability :(

I never realized the cup holders in the old Pathfinder were that bad. Reminds me of the crappy ones in my old 525i. I'm sure there are better aftermarket cup holders for it.

I don’t really follow Nissan, but I always liked 1st Gen Pathfinders. Then they disappeared and became like a Highlander & the Xterra appeared a few years later. It always bugged me that they didn’t call that SUV the Pathfinder.
