  • This video explains how to set up a Waypoint 2.0 mission while in flight. I plan to use Waypoints 2.0 and my Mavic 2 Pro for a 18 to 24 month project to document a construction build. I discovered some issues with it, and I need your suggestions! I love the mode, but maybe there's something better.

    Very good info.
    Using a POI would ensure a smother circle. But with a changing structure while under construction it would hard to find your center point week after week . But if you’re somewhat close I don’t think it would matter.
    In any event this is the best explanation of waypoint 2 I’ve seen.
    Thanks man.

    Hey Russ, when you are setting up the waypoints, try using a protractor that has different size circles on it as a template to draw a perfect circle and get a perfect radius for the point of interest at each waypoint. I’m not sure if it would be better to use arc or polyline, but having a more accurate circle might keep the camera’s perspective consistent on the POI. Thanks for the videos. Always something new to learn.

    Nice video! One thing though you didn't set the arc radius. Once you've chosen arc go back to each wapoint and set the arc turning radius. This will help to get smoother video from point to point. The larger the turning radius the smoother it will be. Its the last input on the lower bar where altitude and speed are. It shown on way point 2 and so on because no arc is needed for way point 1.

    • @51Drones
      @51Drones  5 лет назад

      Nope. Tried it this morning. You don't have the ability to change the arc turning radius. The last input is the POI.

      @@51Drones After all is set up go to waypoint #2 and its there on the bar on the lower part of screen, the last input (turning radius), remember not waypoint #1. I just checked it on my mavic 2 pro on a waypoint mission I set up a few weeks ago. I am able to change the radius with a point of interest at each waypoint

The idea being to show winter turning into summer with flying over trees as an example. But I've noticed that you don't really get the same shot and it's not as accurate as I hoped it would be. Iam having to dissolved cuts into each other to hind how far the footage is out. Hopefully dji can make the GPS more accurate soon.

    Hey Use you way points within point of interest. use 1 or 2 waypoints if you have to use 2. one from starting point and 2 at the center to set your point of interest location and height. then write down your radius distance and speed for that mission. You'll always start from the same center point and height.

    Great video and raises many interesting points. I have a similar project to do for a client to show the progress of a construction site over a period of 8 months, filmed every 1 or 2 weeks. I'm very interested in what your final video will look like and how you intend to edit it. I want to go to my client with a proposal. I'm thinking a POI type film of several circuits blending from week to week to show the project from start to finish. Any advice on how best to achieve this would be most appreciated.

    Maybe you can create a two-point mission - 1 is your take off spot and 2 is the center of your POI. Set it to hover after completing mission, then switch over to POI with the same settings each time. By running the mission to point 2 then switching flight mode you would kind of guarantee the same center for the POI.

    Great Video! Now I need to go play with waypoints this weekend. I noticed at around 8:40 right before you sped it up, the red icon for your drone is following that faint blueish line which isn't a smooth arch from point to point. That must be the actual flight path and seems to correspond to the jerky camera movement you pointed out between 2 & 3, 3 to 4 and then again from 9 to 10 and 11 to 12. Another comment mentioned playing with the arc settings but I didn't see them. This project is very similar to one I will be doing in the near future so I want to figure out before constructions starts.

    Hi Russ, I am a Real Estate photographer using a Mavic 2 Pro. I shoot stills only and feel that Waypoints will help me considerably. I have researched quite a bit and have not found what I am looking for. It is this: I would like to set missions from home, drive to the jobs, launch and shoot the home using waypoints, significantly speeding up my workflow. Unfortunately, most of my jobs are 10 to 30 miles away from home. I called DJI today and was fairly disappointed in the answer given by support. It took me several minutes to relay what I wanted the tech to understand. He kept telling me that I could only set waypoints by holding the drone over my head, (yes really). Eventually, he said it wasn't possible. I had to download GS Pro and pay for Waypoints through that site to do what I had in mind. I told him I knew it could be done using Litchi, but he was not helpful after that. I hope I am clear in my explanation. Do you or anyone have a suggestion for me? Thanks, Russ for all you do to help us here. I love your videos.

    Hi. I noticed a discrepancy in the app, @5:40 when adjusting POI height there’s a H next to the number of ft, (I assume h to be height from ground) where as on the bar below, it shows altitude so, when planning waypoint height And POI height offsite at home, do you set POI taking into consideration it’s Altitude (height from sea-level) or its height H height from ground relative from where the aircraft took off from? Thanks.

    To answer your 18month project, could you set a POI as 3 Waypoints at 150, 180, 210.....and then simply pull back 1500ft, 30o camera tilt and fly at your designated speed?

    Great video, thank you. I went out to try this way of setting the waypoints as you showed and this is what happened. I could set the waypoints by flying to each one and clicking C1. Then I would click the GO button and it would bring up the Task Check page where I set the Cruising Speed and Arc, then I clicked Start. The drone flew back to the first waypoint like it should, but then just hovered. It hovered at the first waypoint and never moved. Also the camera didn't start recording. I tried several times with no luck. Any ideas why this would be? I'm flying the Mavic 2 Pro

    I created a new flight plan yesterday with 8 waypoints, flying around one building/POI. I did not set an elevation for the POI, which may explain what happened in my resulting video. But, when I watched the video later, the building, which was supposed to be the POI, was not, for many of the waypoints. And, I don't think it was ever centered in any of the waypoint positions. I am not sure what other adjustments to make, except I am going to elevate the POI to about 15 feet and see what difference that might make. BTW, the POI is not centered in the rough 360 degree circle that the waypoints make. They are at varying elevations and distances from the building.

    Hi Russ, another great (2-part) tutorial, thanks! You think you were late to the party two years ago .. I'm just here, haha!
    Q. I'm using the DJI SC and I want to create a waypoint route at home but the screen is a bit small. It might be a silly question but I'm assuming that my finished task is saved on the device that it's created on i.e. if I use my larger tablet to create my task, I'll need to fly the task with the tablet or, if I create my task south my SC, I'll need to fly the task with my SC?
    (I guess this is where Litchi still has the edge on Waypoints 2.0 in that I can logon on my laptop, create a task, then open the Litchi app on my SC once at the site) .. if that makes sense!

  • @stephenwoodburn2970

    Russ, I think I would consider using the Litchi app for this, as it gives you the ability to create an orbit mission, then fly the exact same orbit again and again. I generally like to use the DJI app, but find this functionality a really great option for flying the exact same orbit over and over without having to fly over and set my point of orbit on each flight. Hope this helps you. I really enjoy your channel. Take care.

    Set a single waypoint with the desired altitude and orientation and execute the mission with the route setting set to "Return to First Waypoint" and then once it's at that first location, inititate the POI. I haven't tested this, but it's a thought.

    I find the maps that you need to use on the controller through the Go4 App really poor in comparison to Google Maps which I’ve used previously when using Litchi with a different drone. I’m now upgraded to the Zoom with Smart controller and this is my biggest complaint so far. Is there a way I can get Google Maps on the Smart controller so I can use this when doing waypoints etc?
    Or is the only way to do this by using Litchi again?

    I have been using litchi for years now and the first thing I noticed when waypoints 2.0 was released was the instability! Litchi really has dji beat ! I hope dji can fix this in the next update also when using litchi the drone does not need to be powered on when making the flight plan VERY CONVENIENT and doesn’t drain the drones battery 🔋! And I think you can draw the mission on the map FAST AND EFFICIENT! I assume you are aware of most of this but maybe someone will find this helpful!

    Great video but if I were doing this I would have used POI and by coming back to the same spot and setting the POI, altitude, radius and speed I had previously used I think you would have gotten a buttery smooth result with less effort. The key of course is documenting those settings to reuse as I don't think there is an other way to save them. Don't forget camera pitch setting!

    Could you just use two points, one to start and then the other next to it, side by side. Then set in arc mode. Wouldn't it then have to follow all the way around the point of interest in one smooth arc until it got back around to the other point?

    • @51Drones
      @51Drones  5 лет назад

      I don't think so, because it would need a waypoint on the opposite side to tell it where to go. And how would it know how far to arc? Good idea though. I might give it a try.

  • @StanCook
    @StanCook 5 лет назад

    I believe the lines between the waypoints is a straight line and you had the camera at waypoint one in that direction and you were right about having the other points aim at the same place. That is where the mini adjustment came from. If you set the point of interest and set distance from and clockwise or counterclockwise is should be smooth. In other words, I don't think you need waypoints for a perfect circle around the plant. Waypoints would be better for an irregular shape property or plant.

I'll be flying later this afternoon and plan to try using waypoints for a project I'm working on. Today's flight will be mostly a "training" flight for me.
