    I think the spike being 420 ft also is two fold, it's a buffer for height so the train never goes higher than the spike and it also gives visual symmetry

    • @brianfoss571
      @brianfoss571 Год назад +14

      It provides visual symmetry when viewed from Millennium Midway, Hotel Breakers, or the beach. But from the front of the park, the spike will look like Burj Khalifa does in Dubai's skyline. Ludicrously, absurdly dominant. That's why I'd been skeptical Cedar Point would build higher than 150-250 feet.

      Also consider if there is a power outage and there is a rollback of the 3rd launch. If the LSMs are powerless to brake then you need the back spike to be as tall as the front one so the train doesn’t overtop it.

      I mean you’re talking about a 30 foot difference between the front and the back on a 420 foot spike. I think the difference in forces will be insignificant. I would think a ride that goes this fast for this long would be a front row ride like i305 or Millennium Force.

    • @MyLifeAsBrandon

      Over the top hat, yes. On the spike, no.

  • @devdevthrills
    @devdevthrills Год назад +50

    Common misconception, between launch 2 and 3 you’ll gain a ton more speed, because you’ll hit zero at the top of the spike, and will lose a ton of speed compared to the 101 launch coming back down. That’s why shuttle coasters often boost you up a spike or pull you up with a chain, to make up for the speed needed coming up. Your point still stands that it isn’t going to be punchy, but it’s not like it’s only going to boost you 19mph faster.
    Also it takes a lot more to go over a top hat vs up a spike. Definitely won’t get to the top, but Dragster could probably get the nose of the train close to the top of the top hat if it just went straight up with less speed. I’m sure it’s mostly for visual purposes, but proportionally to a smaller shuttle, it’ll reach a similar height. Just looks exaggerated on something that huge.

    • @MattMcIrvin
      @MattMcIrvin Год назад +1

      Because kinetic energy is (1/2) mv^2, the change in kinetic energy for a given change in speed is greater at higher speeds, and that's what's going to determine how far you can go up the spike or the top hat. That's why you don't go very far up at all on the first launch.

    Generally, spikes are either as tall as (ex. TT2) or taller than (ex. All the Intamin ones) the top hat. I don’t know the exact reason but I assume it’s a total-last-resort safety thing; where launching either direction at maximum speed, the train would only have enough speed to go over the top hat, and wouldn’t hit the top of the spike.

      Yup makes a lot of sense, at 120 mph it makes it OVER the crest, it doesn’t stop at it, it’s probably still going at least 10 mph. If it were to rollback at the top hat and the brakes would completely fail for some reason, due to resistance it would just barely not go over the top.

    • @MrHighFlyer500
      @MrHighFlyer500 Год назад

      @@timokho20 These brakes are fail-safe. In the event of a power failure, the permanent magnets on the train create eddy currents in the launch fins, slowing the train down. You wouldn't even get through the launch run to the other side.

It started the coaster wars of the 90s and 00s, and from Cedar Point's perspective, culminates in the "tallest and fastest triple launch strata coaster." But it's going to feel milder than any hill in the park, outside of Camp Snoopy.

      It just sucks because we KNOW that LSMs can launch more powerfully than that. Just look at what Intamin did with red force. And the technology has gotten even better since then using super capacitors. That 0 to 74 is over like five seconds. Most Teslas are faster than that.

    I agree. I think its going to be so much more awesome in some ways, and sad in others.
    The length is going to be awesome. It’s like 3 SUPERMAN: Escape from Krypton experiences in 1 go. The hang time/visuals will be out-standing. Then of course your gonging to get that amazing crest of the hill and then the full 420 foot rotating plummet. The theming is also awesome, I personally love the new colours. VERY glad the restraints on the new trains are lap focused and not OTS. That would have ruined everything.
    The sad part is just like you said. The ripping acceleration and sheer force of that first launch. That’s going to be the hardest thing to get over.
    So definitely going to gain some new things that will be way better than the old TTD, but TTD2 will never have the aggressiveness. That part is going to suck.

    Intamin may not have wanted to do the project, they may have proposed an entirely new ride. S&S probably could have added a compressed air launch and it would be as good of a launch but no spike and less reliability. Zamperla probably gave Cedar Fair a nice discount in an attempt to really get their roller coaster division off the ground. It’s risky but if successful they could be a major player but if it flops they will continue to be known only for kiddie/family attractions (not horrible since family coasters seem to be the greatest demand right now)

      That's a great point about Intamin. Going with Zamperla for this has baffled me. The train design even looks like it's trying to copy the new Intamin design and, as of late, Intamin's new LSM launch coasters are incredibly reliable. Zamperla has yet to have even one successful large scale coaster hit the market where Intamin has Velocicoaster, Pantheon (track switches), and even Hagrid's; which I know got off to a rough start but have you seen how many trains are on that course at a time with multiple track switches. The thought never crossed my mind that Intamin just turned it down for one reason or another, so Zamperla was able to swoop in as the lowest bidder. The train is even just a prototype with no track record at all. Prototypes never work from the start and from there it's a 50/50 shot as to whether or not the park and manufacturer can solve the issues.
      I also don't want to come off as a naysayer. I don't think this is going to work, but I really really hope I'm wrong.

Maybe they can modify the first acceleration to 105mph, have the 2nd launch get you to 113mph, which would bring you about 375-390ft up the spike, and then the final acceleration to 120 to get you over the top hat. That way you'll be able to still experience that dragster launch and still maintain the ride. It would add about an extra 12-13 seconds to the ride, which is not a big deal. I still don't see why they can't run 4 trains. Have one running, one loaded ahead of the station, one loading in the station, and one in the unloading station.

    Knowing Cedar Fair, TT2 will 100% have a seatbelt ultimately slowing down operations. If it’s anything like the old dragster seatbelts (which are also used on Hangtime at KBF), it will be vital that the crew is on top of guest engagement about those seat belts. Otherwise they’re going to be opening up a lot of rows which will slow down the ops.

    Regarding first launch, it can't be too strong/fast otherwise launch 2 and 3 will have even less acceleration. But like you said going up to 74 mph with such a long launch will not feel strong. Just the unfortunate effect of converting a 1-pass hydraulic launch to a 3-pass LSM launch.
    Regarding the spike, with the amount of energy at 101mph, ignoring air resistance and friction, the center of gravity of the train will go up around 340 ft, and if you take into account the length of half a train, back of the train going up 360 ft seems plausible. Who knows, maybe they will launch faster in practice to account for friction and drag. The benefit of LSMs is how easy it is to tweak the launch.

    Going backwards at 100 mph is probably the most exciting part, because it's something not yet seen on other coasters. But after all the mysteries and fuss about "reimagination" of the ride, it feels like Cedar Point has done just the minimum. They needed a swing launch to get rid of the pesky unreliable old launch system and still gain enough speed to clear the top hat. If I am being sarcastic, I imagine a 5 minute meeting needed to decide that including a slightly different theming.

However, when lines were short at it and you could get off and on, Wicked Twister was a lot of fun. I feel TT2 will be like a hybrid form of Twister meets Dragster and ultimately the back and forth will actually be a lot of fun. Only downside is you don't have those massive LIMs above your head breathing down massive electrical heat and screeching the massive polyurethane wheels from the Twister.

    That initial launch should be circa 110mph so you get a proper rollback and a meaningful first launch. It would also be better for enthusiasts to add even more speed with the other 2 launches to use more of the spike, and then crest the top hat with more speed to get sustained airtime over the top. Also lowkey wish they added a vertical loop before the brake run.

    Choosing the straight backwards spike actually helps ensuring the track will be smooth. For all their recent developments & upgrades, Zamperla has no prior experience building track on that scale. (In fairness, NOT ONE supplier other than Intamin has) Building straight, rather than twisted or banked sections of track is arguably easier to quality control.
    So in that regard, it's less of the risk for Cedar Fair. They can assume TT2 will be reasonably smooth. A ground-up Zamperla twisty & curvy layout with inversions would be much more unknown quality.

    Thank you for your insight and analysis - second to none as always! The good news is that a 'true 420ft roll back' is still a possibility and if they apply a (mild) 4th LSM launch it would travel farther up the spike. There is also 'room to grow' as speeds may increase when the technology evolves.

    • @joesmith6972

      Ending the ride with a second massive spike would have been killer. Both spikes could be parallel on the same tower opposite of the top hat. Start off going backwards into the smaller spike, then forward up and over the top hat. Then accelerate even faster into the record breaking spike. A rollback from 450' would have been something worthy of all the hype.

    I hear you worrying about the swing launch but if there is any reliability issues it will be minor. Yes it's pushing the limits of the LSM tech, but it is proven. There might be a problem getting the synchronous part of LSM to line up at that speed but that should be worked out in testing. I also think the initial launch is relatively slow to prevent thermal issues. Flight of Fear at Kings Island and Kings Dominion were hitting 60 MPH in a shorter launch and heat was an issue if I remember opening correctly. A slower launch at a longer duration reduces the heat generated.

I bet the reason they chose Zamperla is because of cost, and maybe possibly because Zamperla gave them some other good pitch that convinced them to give them a chance. And hopefully Cedar Fair isn't choosing Zamperla out of spite towards Intamin. I think Zamperla gave a package deal with the Wild Mouse to Cedar Fair to entice them to give Zamperla the opportunity.
    I also suspect it's the park or chain's decision to make the spike 420 tall to have bragging rights as I'm sure Zamperla is much more capable in predicting how much height they need for the 2nd launch.
