Best thing about these games is that you can do different chouces and if people complain about that, they are dumb. Parry/blocks are useful against human opponents and wolves. Otherwise dodges are more reliable.
Atmosphere is everything in this game. The land is torn by war. And not the ways its portayed in most media. It influences everything. From water being poisoned by all the corpses in it, to there not being any men in their 20s in some villages as they were all conscripted, to monsters moving into abandoned areas, to people searching for scapegoats, to those who fight back, those who betray, those who hide, those who search for new masters in the absence of the king, some people offering language lessons since after the invader conquers the world "its better to know the language of your opressor".
Even the griffin has a story.

Hang in there dude! This game is easily 100+ hrs (with the two DLCs, which are astonishing each and are better quality than most full title games) and there will be some down periods here and there, the thing about the game is that somehow someway it keeps getting better the longer you play it. Never seen a game be able to pull this off. Pace yourself and definitely read as much as you can. I had 3 playthroughs (up to 100hrs each) and I'm going back for a 4th one now after the announcement of Witcher 4, I just discovered a new farily large quest I have never done before. That's how massive this game is. Slow and steady on the path

You're right, the map is huge. There's three maps in the game: the one you're in right now it's the ''little map'' (White Orchard), the next one is the ''big map'' (Velen and Novigrad) and the third one is the Skellige Isles (by the way the way it's pronounced is Skeh-lee-geh and the ''g'' makes the same sound as the ''g'' in ''Geralt''). On top of that the two DLCs also have their maps, the Hearts of Stones one has its own little expansion in the second map and the Blood and Wine one is a completely different map in a completely different location.
Some little advice, if you're interested in the lore you can read the bestiary (as you did with the griffin and the ghoul) and you can also read the different characters as it gives you a small backstory of them and interestingly enough they get updated whenever events with them happen (some of them might be a result of your own decisions). You can do this off camera of course or not do it at all, just thought it was worth mentioning. To see the weakness of monsters in the bestiary you have to look at the bottom-centre of the screen when you're in a specific monster and they'll show you what blade oil, potion and sign are useful.
Also, looting is very important as you get the ingredients for the creation of bombs and potions (as well as taking the wild plants and herbs). On the map you can see the plants that you can gather, marked with a small leaf. The corpses you can loot also appear on the map, with a red ''x'' and when you loot a corpse the x will disappear so you know which corpse is left to loot.

I was never into massive RPGs until my brother gave this to me. It’s the only game I’ve ever invested in buying the DLC for, because it’s that good. My only advice is to check out the unidentified locations you find, and open every book you can find. The books you can find sometimes have recipes for bombs, blade oils, potions, alchemy ingredients and anything else that could give you an edge going through the story. You might find nothing, or you might find an advanced recipe you’ve been dying to find. Brace yourself for one of the best games you could ask for. Subscribed just to follow this.

You are lukty one playing this masterpiece for 1st time. My recomendation: just set Polish voice with subtitles in original polish version geralt and people sounds 1000 times better than the others

Do side missions and then return to the locations of those missions. Your actions have consequences. You're playing too fast, you lost a nice task with Tomira.

@@carl_consumer.of.reality I hope. This game is all about side quests, new players don't know about it. Thanks to the side quests, this game is a perpetual motion machine

I’ve completed this game 4 times in the last 4 yrs. Always see something new every time. Decisions matter. Also, Gwent. I’ve never liked it. Most do but I never play it. To each their own. So you’re not alone if you should decide you don’t like it either. It’s boring in my opinion. The game and stories though are next to none. Stick with it. You will not regret it. Enjoy.
