ALIEN WEAPONRY reactions
As a Kiwi I feel like a proud dad when I watch them. Also the ceremonial Māori challenge is called the Haka
Chur bro, Taranaki here. Always good to find another kiwi in the wild
Not a Kiwi [I'm Aussie], but my fiance is. He cried when he heard this the first time.
Kia Ora from Tamaki Makaurau. Love these guys and always happy to see Kiwis doing well on teh world stage.
Kia Ora fellow Kiwi!! So SO proud to see some Aotearoa talent on here. Geebz, you have to react to 'Blindspott' another amazing New Zealand metal band! "S.U.I.T" "Phlex" and "Nil by mouth" are all great songs, Phlox especially holds a special place in a lot of Kiwis hearts. It's one of their slower, more emotive songs and is commonly played at funerals of Kiwis taken too soon.
@@Zacski In Taranaki, too!!! We gotta get Geebz reacting to Blindspott, L.A.B, Kora and Villainy!!!
These lads where between the ages of 16 and 18 when they did this album, the entire thing is a fucking pummelling record, highly recommend checking more of this bands stuff out. 🤘
Lol, I actually think they were 17 at the time of this video Haha.
Lol, I actually think they were 17 at the time of this video Haha.
I would like to introduce you to three boys from New Zealand, Lewis De Jong (guitar/vocals), Henry De Jong (drums/vocals) & Ethan Trembath (bass/vocals) At the time this video was done Lewis & Ethan were 16 & Henry was 18. They have won so many awards, but their most prized achievement was playing at Wacken Open Air Festival. They achieved this goal when they played on the Wasteland Stage in 2018 (Henry was 18, Lewis & Ethan were 16). The reviews of that festival praised these 3 boys as one of the top acts to play that year & the best to ever play on the Wasteland stage. They formed the band when Lewis was 8 & Henry was 10 in 2010. I believe Ethan joined the band in 2012 when he was 12. I would suggest "Ru Ana Te Whenua" with the closed caption turned on. The rhythm of the song makes a whole lot more sense if you understand what they are singing. So many other reactors have not done so & are very confused by the rhythm. I would also suggest "Hypocrite", the video is in english & shows how young they were when they did this song. Lewis & Ethan were 12 & Henry was 14. If you really enjoy this band, might I suggest that you take a look at some of the documentaries done about them, because of their youth, their talent & their use of the Maori language. You can find all their videos & documentaries on their RUclips channel. Thank you, for doing this video of this outstanding young band.
❤️❤️
These guys opened the main stage on either the Saturday or Sunday at Download Festival in the UK one year. There must've been about 1,000 hung-over people just wandering around the main arena, then these unknown, skinny little while kids just took to the stage and unleashed THIS. A thousand jaws just dropped, and a midday moshpit broke out. It was absolutely epic.
I was at that download but was too hungover to make it to see them.... so excited that they are there again this year. These guys make such exciting music. Can't wait for their set!!!🤘🏼
The wind sound comes from the Pūrerehua. It can be made of bone, wood or stone, they are blade-like and swing on a long cord producing a loud, deep whirling that can be heard from a distance. A rapid spinning motion will start the music of the Purerehua'a song as it rotates and flutters. Uses vary from luring lizards, summoning rain, communicating and attracting a soul mate
Wow, thank you much for that comment Bryce!
Such a beautiful, haunting instrument. Every time I hear one it gives me "chicken skin" 😉
I can't even imagine what it would have sounded like in Aotearoa before the Pākehā arrived. Nothing but the endless forests, mountains and wetlands with the sound of a Pūrerehua in the distance...
@@KeyOfGeebz Crocodile Dundee is probably where you remember it from. He uses an Australian First Nations version in that movie.
@@Natsirt666 That's how most of us were probably introduced to the instrument. Very haunting sounding.
Can you please tell me more that is so freaking interesting and I want to make one
Love this band. They always reminded me of Roots era Sepultura.
Scrolling down the comment section to see who else noticed. Exactly
That's a damn good shout. Cheers
One of the awesome things about te reo Māori as a language, re music, is that every word ends in a vowel, so it just sings SO well.
Whoa...that’s fucking cool.
Alien Weaponry is from New Zealand and this song is sung in Maori
That is correct
Saw an interview of those lads- really young but very respectful about where they come and the Maori culture. A great export from New Zealand. Great song!!
Great choice. Have to say that because I am a Kiwi. All about a legendary battle between two warring Maori tribes. One of which was ruled by cannibal chieftainesses. Don't bring a Taiaha to a Musket fight would be the lesson here. I like these guys because they are very melodic while being kick-ass. The instrument you were correctly describing that makes that humming wind sound is a Purerehua.
We used to make Purerehua at primary school from the old Whitcoulls plastic rulers and a bit of string. You've got to break the 30cm in half though, it makes a better sound.
@@Zacski I totally forgot about that! Yeah! I think we were more inspired by Crocodile Dundee using a similar tribal instrument in his film though in my school from memory.
Have seen these guys in Australia. You really don't get their awesome power off of a recording. They're brutal live.
Saw them last night and they just blew me away. Didn’t know much about Māori culture before. Was nice to have discovered more of it. So much raw power and passion in their performance. It was like being transported back in time. Would love to visit NZ some day.
@@Tirades_In_Spades at Ally Pally? I saw them and they were absolutely incredible.
The haka entrance was amazing.
Gojira also showed they're still the greatest live band on the planet.
Couldn’t believe how young these kids were when I first heard this. Such a powerful sound and message, especially from such a young group.
Hey Geebz, the thing you reference in the song is called a bullroarer, rhombus, or turndun. The one used here would be a pūrerehua, it is a traditional Māori bullroarer, they were used for healing or making rain
Thier father was their producer for a long time.
Oh the most direct/literal translation of Kai Tahgata is "food people" or "eat[ing] people"
The whole story of this video is about Tūmatauenga a wargod...
The video actually tells part of the story. One tribe got guns from the British and used them to hunt down opponents.
Be'lakor! The Smoke of Many Fires! Mahalo!
Awesome tune. Hard to find a dud in the Be'lakor discography.
@@MetalGeek464 I can't think of one, in all four albums
Stones reach is fucking amazing! I recommended them in his immediate last video, that and myrath, as well as archspire and angel vivaldi. Oh, and sycamour too! A little mix of stuff lol.
@@TheGodshatter I'm going hard on Smoke Of Many Fires. Comments, social media, donations, everything
Also supporting The Smoke of Many Fires, or alternatively An Ember's Arc from the same album. Or anything else by Be’lakor. Cheers.
These guys are INSANELY talented. I caught their set at Download 2019 in Sydney. Let me tell you, I have never seen a bunch of kids look so comfortable on such a large stage with a crowd like that. Definitely got a long career ahead of them should they choose.
you can only perform like this when you truly are in touch with the music you're playing. This is known as "being in the flow" or "in the zone", or in correct terms, hyperfocused. I tell you there's no rush like it, no drug on this planet, when you get that feeling, and the more people you have as an audience, the more it fuels you. That's why these kids probably looked like naturals. The hard part for artists is being in this state consistently. So far, all the videos I've seen of these guys are on point, I'd love to see them continue like this, and I hope to see them live as soon as all this covid shite dies down. 🤘
I saw them opening for TOOL at Open Air Fest 2019, such a badass show, AWWWRIGHT!
😳😳😳
Dude that whole venue was amazing!
@@ryandavis3408 100% it was wild, I was was at the front of the center of the field, wish I could’ve been closer, but who am I to complain at a show like that!
You didn't go weird! LoL You felt it on a deeper level due to your own habitat & obvs attunement to the natural Polynesian surroundings. Awesome, respectful & intelligent reaction! & soulful more than you realize. We are also global citizens & we will only learn the best from mama earth's indigenous... from another proud AF kiwi chick from Aoteroa, NZ 🤟x
I love this band. I have no idea what they're saying, but you FEEL all of their songs in your blood, at least, I do
This track fricking rocks!! Love New Zealand (Aussie here), love the people and the culture, love AW!!! 🤘🤘
AMAZING BAND!! They have an amazing history! Saw them live before the outbreak, just an awesome band!
By far my favorite RUclips channel, thanks for the content.
I found out I'm quarter Maori 5 years ago and this band inspired me to learn Te Reo
The Haka rules!! So raw and emotional... very powerful!
I think you're right on the drums standing out in particular. This record was produced by a guy called Tom Larkin, who he himself is a very accomplished drummer for one of New Zealand's biggest bands, Shihad. So I guess its not surprising that the drums have such presence.
That instrument that makes the humming sound is called a Purerehua. It is swung around in a circle to make that sound. You may have heard it in relation to the film "Once Were Warriors", it was used in the trailer. These guys are fantastic and its great to see them taking the Maori language to a wider audience.
Yes. You totally explained why I love folk music in general, and folk metal in particular. That visceral connection of who we are to who we were. Also check out a short list I made of some of my faves from around the world in this sub-genre!

Awesome that you listened to our Kiwi brothers who have done good in the metal world 👍
I feel like raiding when I hear this song.
welcome to the world of folk metal. we have everything from Mongolian throat singing (The hu) to African Traditional music (ARKA'N) mixed with metal and everything in between
This group kick ass. Super talented kids.❤
I remember my dad saying that he knew he was getting old when the police looked young! Strangely for me it is metal bands😂.
Working out when this came out that when I added their ages together I was still older... Geriatrics of the world it is time to unite😂😂😂
Oh don't do that I'm only 2 years younger than the combo!!
The instrument your talking about at 13.22 is called Purerehua.
Have you checked out Heilung before? I think Maybe you have. If not I would definitely check out Heilung - Krigsgaldr Live. Deeply cultural and deeply moving.
They are outstanding and unique. What he was saying about chants in this video reminded me of some of the chants they use in In Maidjan.
Love Heilung. Amazing music.
Seconded.
yea dude, as far as culture and tradition goes, theyre on top
Can never go wrong with Heilung!!!
Amazonia by Gojira next
Oh for sure! He won't be able to stream the video at all, just audio possibly - WMG is being super aggressive - but he'll love the video for himself, and there's so much to take away from the composition itself.
Chant. Canticle. Incantation. Enchanted. Music IS magic.
Yas! Logged on specifically to request this song! Enjoyed your breakdown, as usual!
Thank you for this reaction! These guys deserve the exposure. They are so talented.
This is the song I listen to before I walk into the gym to workout...really gets the blood pumping and the spirit fired up... Great band, awesome work.
Hamilton and Christchurch concert with the NZSO at the end of May...will be like S&M....got my ticket
I believe the boys were 15 and 17 when they recorded the album, and 16 and 18 when the video was done. I've had the pleasure of seeing them live, and they are very good. I'm lad yo finally did these guys, I think it might have been me that suggested them back in December. Shepherds Reign is a Samoan band from New Zealand who also sing songs in Samoan and incorporate their culture into their music.
when I first heard this it was good to find out that these guys were all teenagers.
Hopefully they can keep developing and not fade away after 1 big song.
Woohoo! One of my recommendations! Stoked you finally got to this one Geebz!! 🤙🏼
The "whirry thing" - I believe you are referring to the Bullroarer, which is indeed a wooden disc attached to a string and makes a whirring noise when spun around. It's an Australian Aboriginal instrument. Well, signalling tool.
Funny story, I found Alien Weaponry after listening to The Hu and wondering about other culturally inspired metal. Couldn't find much Aussie stuff, but when I searched for Maori metal, well...
Kai Tangata = Tangata is pronounced = Tongue-a-ta,
I am part-maori/scottish Kiwi.
Thank you very much :)
Me too Maori/Scott/Jew can be a problem the Maori side wants to get on it but the Scott and Jew in me never wants to pay
Tom Larkin who recorded this album is the drummer for SHIHAD YOU CAN HEAR IT IF YOUR INTO SHIHAD
The drummers fills on the chorus as so damn TASTY! More people should take note; sometimes, less is more. It reminds me of GOJIRA - Flying Whales (the use of toms/floor toms for fills or on the off beats). So addictive to listen to xD 🤘🤘
Hey Geebez, glad you finally got this, that noise you heard is a Māori wind instrument called a Pūrerehua, you can see a demonstration of how it works here ruclips.net/video/xLWcyk8wRqE/видео.html
The song is a war chant, and the boys ancestors were part of the battle they were depicting in the video - they also had family members in the video. They ate their enemies to dishonour them, which is what the song title means. The repeating part you heard in the chorus translates to 'This is the work of Tūmatauenga' - who is the Māori god of war.
Saw these guys open for prophets of rage in nz, absolutely killer sound
the chorus is really nice on this one.
Alien Weaponry is AMAZING!!!!
Alein weaponry is one of my favorite folk metal bands.
It's called a Pūrerehua, it can be made of bone, wood or stone, they are blade-like and swing on a long cord producing a loud, deep whirling that can be heard from a distance. A rapid spinning motion will start the music of the Purerehua'a song as it rotates
Glad that you got around to this song; the instrument you're thinking of is a bullroarer. It's over 20,000 years old - being used from Africa, through Ancient Greece and into the Americas.
It's used prominently here in Australia - among the Aboriginals - and yes, even back in my homeland of New Zealand.
These guys are sooo talented! You're the first reaction I've seen of their music. And the video is a MUST watch 👏🏼
The spinning sound you heard was correct 👌🏻 it’s called a Purerehua the bass player Ethan was using it to make the sound for this song. Excellent review & you nailed it 👏🏻 I enjoy your channel as I am the pure listener who loves music but doesn’t play an instrument 🤘🏻
If you want more New Zealand music then I can highly recommend ;
Blindspott - 'Phlex' and 'Nil by Mouth'
Devilskin - 'Endo' and 'Never See the Light'
Great band name. Can't wait to hear this
Sometimes you can ignore the music video and still get the whole picture, but with Alien Weaponry, you'd just miss most of it (given the language barrier as well). Kudos to you for recognizing that!
This band is my a part of my regular gym routine.
Crocodile Dundee dude! My great grandpa showed me how to make one when I was little.
Hey Geebz, you should check out Aurora with her doing Helvegen with Wardruna. Helvegen is some real Viking stuff, it's a death lullaby. Really interesting and unique.
He's done it already! A couple of months ago or so? Such a great song.
Thanks for your reaction to this great song and group. Appreciate your insights and the respect you show towards the culture.
Yay u finally got. Here thanks mate can’t wait to watch this reaction 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I like how you touch on the "journey" of humanity through time, all of the things its taken to carve out our own niche in nature and survive. That's why I love ambient music, particularly from the likes of Carbon based Lifeforms, Astropilot, and Unusual Cosmic Process. It puts into perspective the emotions, ambitions, and energy of not only humanity but every species that has struggled in the eons that have passed on our planet, and even beyond into the cosmos. Kind of like the ocean.
I think I've never clicked so quickly on a video just by looking at the preview. Finally you got to AW!!!!
Love theses dudes. Their live stream from earlier this year is a killer gig. So much energy.
Great reaction and I feel strongly that getting in touch with our primal nature is important to being a healthy human being in our increasing artificial modern world.
9:03 when the music just hits right
What a great band. Just saw them with my 8 year old son who became an instant fan. To see a kid lose his mind to music that’s so visceral, real seems special and natural.
Aw dude! I love Alien Weaponry!
geebz everyone’s begging you to do the art of dying by gojira on the other vids you did on them!! i recommend it too its really a masterpiece
The Aboriginal Australian’s used a Bull Roarer to communicate over distance, maybe a similar tool was used by the Māoris 🤙🏼
Watched them down the Rd on a trailer in Ruakaka NZ about 3 years age - my son went to school with them ..Awesome
Never apologize for respecting and revering indigenous people's culture and way of life. I've learned over the course of my life (short as it's been in comparison), that people who disrespect the first inhabitants of any land are just vile.
Love your digression on the ancestral power of culturally influenced music. Totally agree. Keeping doing you
Can’t confirm that’s a bull roarer but you’re thinking of a bull roarer. It’s a piece of wood on the end of a string you swing the living hell out of. Sounds amazing if you’ve got the stamina for it. Haven’t heard one in popular music since Yothu Yindi.
PS can’t speak for anyone else but I love the weird stuff and I hope you keep going there.
Dude, it's not a bad thing to critique with your own feelings about shit. We like your honesty.
they have a great future with this talent and ability to grab your soul and make you hear their cultures History in their songs
A pleasure watching this video and hearing your thoughts about music and culture!
Sweet! He did it; heard it, got it to some more of the masses
Maori and Hawaiian have common ancestry, both departed easter island and at one time they were one people....its no coincidence the languages and mythology is SO similar...
Aloha my friend!!! Have heard this band on and off and I have to say you finally turned me on to this group and they are fantastic. Thx so much, will dive deep into their catalog!
The best thing about Alien Weaponry is they absolute pull this off live with amazing energy. Saw them live late last year here in Wellington NZ and got to hear a few of their new unreleased songs live and they were totally badass!
Such good recommendations! Not too shabby, you have a great fan base Geebz
These kids are heavy af!!! 🤘🏽
Check out Heilung's song Krigsgaldr from their album Lifa. They hit on a lot of the cultural notes you touched on. They call their music "amplified history" and use instruments and costuming to reflect their ancestors and ancient origins. Their music is all based off ancient Scandinavian stone carvings or the old eddas etc. Knowing your spiritual leanings I think youd really dig them.
That and their music is out of this world and unlike anything else ive ever heard.
Thanks for the videos Geeb I look forward to em for my breaks at work every day, they really help me mellow out on stressful days !
I'm once again requesting a Poets of The Fall - Carnival of Rust reaction 😛
The instrument that you spin on the string you are describing is called a Purerehua
I bought your headphones on a whim recently. I'm no headphone expert but I feel like I'm hearing musical nuances my prior headphones did not offer me so I'm a happy guy.
"The older I get, the better I was."
The spinning noise you referenced was a major component of Crocodile Dundee II where Mick summoned help.
You asked about a tip for your list...
"Voice Recorder"
Have one right there in "your spot", and keep one on you "in your bubble"
Keep a list of ones that you've done, and give them a rating system (1-10) on how soon you want to do another one for what ever reasons; viewer reaction, personal taste, etc.
Transfer Bubble lists to Spot List, and keep rating list updated on your computer...
Physical recorders / mics work best for quickness, and the computer list will help you stay focused and prioritized, but when needed the physical recorders will be there to remind you
It will help you remember things more with them too cause just the object alone will trigger a response that builds unused memory (Hypnotherapist since '05 so I do know a little a bit of what I say...it's not just the 🍀 talk'n.... well, maybe a little, but that's experience for ya...
Also, I'm not a nutritionist, but I swear by these
Magnesium 400mg With dinner, and with is very important
Stuff is like the "Limitless" pill... the next morning you'll feel like you got your young brain back, and it'll give you some trippy dreams
You can usually find them cheap at any food store, but still check up with a dr. or research before using them if concerned, but they are considered vitamins...whatever that means lol
Enjoy your break my friend; see ya when ya get back

Tūmatauenga, the main Māori god of war, is one of the sons of Ranginui (sky father) and Papatūānuku (earth mother). In tradition, Tūmatauenga sought to solve conflict by warfare and was the deity of humans.

Wow, what wonderfully powerful lyrics - THANK YOU for that :)
Please do The Dillinger Escape Plan - Mouth of Ghosts or The Mars Volta - Luciforms sometime soon please!
Great video. I like that you didn’t pause it constantly you let the music sink in and felt it before you gave an opinion on it. Definitely an enjoyable experience
Thank you Ryan :)
There's a few ways you could manage your list of requests - I personally like Excel spreadsheets and you could include the date in a second column so you could sort by older requests. There's also the option of using a kanban-tyle board (Trello is my favorite). You'd assign each request to a card, you can create buckets such as "Requested" and "Done" with dates and even color coding you could use for genres.
So cool to open youtube up this arvo and see this!!! go the local lads!!!
Heard this song for the first time while watching Alien Weaponry live. Great band!!🤘🏻
To go in your "non-metal" list 😁
Jane's Addiction - 3 Days
Moron Police - Captain Awkward
I'd like to hear you decompose Rammstein, but not the obvious Du Hast. "Rosenrot" or "Mutter" would be interesting aurally for sure!
For chant-like vocals in particular, I recommend Slugdge - The Spectral Burrows, and Apocalypse Orchestra - The Garden of Earthly Delights.
You probably heard the spinning noise from the movie Crocodile Dundee.
