    It's interesting how much attention this series brings to the combination models. Most Bionicle fans I know, myself included, don't factor those into their opinons of a set at all. The base models are what matters and they succeed or fail entirely on their own merit. (For this reason, the word "base model" is almost never used; it would be redundant.) Your unique focus on the combos definitely adds a lot to this already impressive review series!

    • @AllOutBrick
      @AllOutBrick  3 года назад +33

      I never paid any attention to them at all either when I was younger, I was always focused on what the picture on the package showed off not the combinations. When I decided to do this review series it felt like an important thing to include, almost all of the additional models have a place in the lore and expanded an already wide open universe for me. They're hit and miss sometimes, but when they hit they really make a set stand out

    • @devackroyd
      @devackroyd 3 года назад +9

      @@ossianback I don't disagree, but I believe it is important to put a solid asterisk here on the first 6 years of Bionicle or so, as not only did the amount of combo models go down, so did their quality. Not to mention that after 2006 and starting in 2008 particularly (ignoring any combos with 07' lime joints), there is no viability to making any of the combo models due to the fragility of the joints. I think comparing the 01' combo models to the single 2010 combo in that monstrosity Gaardus illustrates the change in direction away from putting any budget into the development of combo models compared to the more technic based years of Bionicle, a real shame really. If I could change anything about Generation One, it would have been better joints in the later years and the continuation of creative and impactful combo models in the story.

    The interesting thing is that because these sets are essentially clone sets based on the Bohrok, you don't even need them to build the new combiners, you can just use the original Bohrok to build them. And of course it works vice versa too! This grants even more playability without having to buy additional sets.

    • @MrCmon113
      @MrCmon113 Год назад +1

      Come on. How much of a fanboi can you be?
      They're selling essentially the same set 12 times and you think that's good, because then instructions for other models are more general?

    • @BenjaminsBay
      @BenjaminsBay Год назад +10

      @@MrCmon113 No, what I am saying is that as long as you have any 3 Bohrok, you can build 4 different combiners and I believe that on its own is good value. I don't like them releasing 12 clone sets either but I understand why they released the Kal (they wanted to have sets out and did not have anything else at the time).

    Even though they looked almost exactly the same as their original counterparts, I can understand why LEGO decided to play it safe and release the Bohrok-Kal. Personally, I like the Bohrok-Kal better than the original Bohrok. Something about the shields and silver accents works really well with the Bohrok design IMO. Also loved how they fit into the storyline, each having their own unique "personality" and "powers" similar to the Toa, unlike the previous Bohrok, which were basically mindless robots being controlled by a hivemind.

    Gahlok-Kal was the first Bionicle set I ever obtained, even if it was in July of '04 as a birthday gift. Around three and a half years later, I obtained a copy of Kohrak-Kal which had a mini-CD Rom-which was something that had been circulated since certain prints of the Toa Mata. At that time, I had a friend who had Levahk-Kal, almost obtained in '04. It's worth noting that the Bohrok limbs in black, brown and Mata green are exclusive to their respective sets as are the Electricity Shields on Tahnok-Kal and the Plasma Shields on Pahrak-Kal. The ones in Mata blue were only in two other sets after this, both of which I owned. More recently, I remember someone having a misprinted Tahnok-Kal head plate with the emblem of Gaholok Kal's Magnetism Shield, instead of what it should have.

The Kal themselves were really cool characters and the plot point about stealing the Nuva’s powers is amazing (although the Nuva Symbols almost make them feel like a downgrade from the Mata). However, the Kal’s set designs and the Kanohi Nuva collecting plot feel like lazy rehashes, and we didn’t even get cool gold Kanohi Nuva

    Personally I prefer the silver accents over the original Boh Rok. Mainly because it makes them feel different personality wise. The og were the core elemental and colours but yk, also just plain robots, while the Kal had their own personalities and their design really shows that imo. The only thing I dislike about them is the head top, as the symbol feels a little small and there's a lot of silver. It just makes it feel empty and unfinished but that's just my opinion.

    I don't think there is a way to fix the color scheme. There is just so much silver that secondary elemental color would just make them look... Weird...
    It would be nice to get inverted color scheme tho.
    Also, I actually like the color scheme since they're artificial bohroks. Them being dominated by sliver, instead of having matching colors to Toa fits, in my opinion.
    Also, I love how Kaita are basically immovable shield and ever piercing spear. That being said, I would prefer if the smaller one had arms in the same colors. It would be possible if maybe arms were brown black, instead of one arm was black, one brown.

    As a kid, I didn't like the Bohrok-Kal nearly as much as the original Bohrok. The silver just didn't appeal to me, and the only thing I liked about them were the CD roms that came with them.
    As a kid, I remember playing with the original Bohrok, and since I treated them like living beings, upon the Bohrok-Kal's defeat, one Bohrok from each variety takes the suffix "-Kal" becoming the alpha of said variety, and a deputy to their respective Toa.

    The Bohrok-Kal were absolutely a cash grab, if we're honest; the originals were wildly successful, so they capitalized on it

    So sad that these guys aren't as respected as the OG Bohrok.
    I was 7 when these came out, had all 6 of the Bohrok, but I always preferred the Kal.
    Kohrak-Kal in particular is the handsomest set in the series to me.

    I dont consider combo models, and they rarely come even close to an actual set.
    And this combo models cant be used as an pro for the sets, as you can build them with the regular bohroks...
    PS: They might be a reharsh of the originals, but for people that dont have the six originals they can be worth It (as was my case when I was a kid). Or If the person prefers their asthetics over the originals.

    This was a pretty generous review but I respect your opinions and how you backed them up with the combo models. What I do disagree with however is the statement that the Bohrok Kal were impactful in the story. In my personal opinion with no disrespect, the Bohrok Kal arc is one of the weakest in all of the first generation of Bionicle. Pretty clearly the weakest in the first like, 6-7 years. This arc literally changes nothing, if it didn't exist, you would be none the wiser. It brings 03' as a whole down in retrospective in my opinion. If it wasn't for the titans and the Rahkshi in particular and not to mention the Mask of Light film, 03' would have been a relatively weak year in my opinion. I feel similarly about the Vahki in 2004, quite boring, inconsequential and forgettable. The Kal definitely set a pretty bad precedent for clone sets as the original Bohrok were excusable, this is followed by the Vahki, the Visorak and one could even argue the Inika build as a whole, a prime example of this being (as much as people hate to admit it, myself included) the Piraka. There is definitely a difference between a team cohesion and just a part for part clone.

    I still think these Kal Bohroks are a rip-off. It's a silver re-paint of the Bohrok from a year ago.

    Hated the Bohrok-Kal story in the comics and to me they are just really dumb villains to where even the Bahrag called them out by calling them fools. The Kal story just pulled the cubes out of nowhere like there was no mention before.
