  • The creeps from the deep! This week we dive into our villains from the 2007 Bionicle line, the Barraki. These 6 warlords ascended from The Pit to assert their dominance onto the Matoran, and stood as the main enemies to our Toa Mahri. Being one of the most hyped up set so far in this series, will they live up to the hype?

    The Barraki were such a game changer. For several years, I'd only bought 2 at most out of a wave of Toa or villains. When they're all practically the same, you can just pick your favorite color and leave it at that. This was the first group since the Nuva where I bought the whole wave. Each Barraki was a fresh experience, and they come together beautifully. I'm of two minds about how skinny some of them are, though. The times I DID try to bulk them up, they just ended up looking more like Toa. As in more generic. I think they wanted these characters to look more organic than usual by minimizing the pistons and other robotic textures? I do like how ghostly it makes a character like Pridak. It's more about the stature for me. Not perfect, but a breath of fresh ai- oh, maybe not.

      @ShadeTheghazt 2 года назад +25

      That last part cracked me up, but I do agree with you. Also I have bulked them up a bit with ccbs shells and it works well on them in my opinion.

      Besides, I don't know how healthy it would be for them, being mutated and then living underwater for centuries.
      It's like they lost their former glory, both mentally and physically... except for Carapar, my baby and beefy crab.

    • @NickonPlanetRipple
      @NickonPlanetRipple 2 года назад +16

      @@boogie1434 The first couple waves of Toa, you at least have different arms, Onua's hunch, Pohatu's reverse torso, there was just enough variety that it didn't feel like the same figure in six colors. But then you have the Bohrok, the Rahkshi, the Vahki, etc. There's a reason the term "clone sets" became a thing. The Metru still had a LITTLE variation, but the Hordika had non besides masks and weapons. The Inika brought a littler variety with the types of armor and bits like Nuparu's claws, but if you built one of them you mostly knew how to build the other five.The Barraki and Mahri were the most variety we'd ever seen.

    These guys are hands down my favorite villains. They are not mindless drones, incompetent criminals, these are warlords. They once ruled the entire universe and even were a threat to Mata Nui. Even mutated and imprisoned they still were still as dangerous if not more so then when they were on land. They even managed to beat the Toa albeit briefly, Also their designs! Each one is made to look like the creature they command. Pridak’s face is even covered in the blood of those he’s killed (I know it’s just supposed to behis design but come on!) lego just got it right in 2007 this is my favorite year of Bionicle!

    I think the reason they didn't include additional armor was due to the fact that they are based on marine animals and wanted to make them look as organic as possible. Carapar is the only one that has armor and that reflects the type of marine animal he depicted.

      Aside from the fact that many marine animals do actually have 'armor', I don't think the issue is that the Barraki don't have enough armor. The real issue is how thin and straight some of their sections are. Rounded armor parts would've made them look more organic.

    These are my personal favourite sets of all time, for Bionicle. If the Piraka started the trend of unique villains that aren't horde members, the Barraki are the set-line which truly defined it. Not a single build repeats itself. This was truly peak design level. Despite my favourite set year being 2004, I absolutely adore 2007's Barraki.

  • @Nailfut
    @Nailfut 2 года назад +39

    Rightly said: what makes the deal about these sets is that, at the time, even we "experienced" kids would have never imagined to build something like them.
    Lego did something conceptually new while mostly sticking to old moulds.
    The Barraki felt like "premium MOCs" to me, a young MOC-er, so they inspired to up my game too!

    I stopped buying Bionicle after the Vahki sets, I grew out of them a bit and moved onto other things. But once the Barraki were announced, I couldn’t not get them. They remain the greatest Bionicle set in my opinion, such fun designs and great builds. They were the first set I actually completed, getting every single one. In the past I got my favourite colours and left it at that. I love these sets

    Where the Barraki are concerned, I think they are better when their lore is taken into account. They're warlords who are significantly reduced from their previous state which lends to their desperation to retrieve the Ignika. I think those extra ten pieces you mentioned could have actually gone towards a little accompanying creature in their undersea armies. The builds are solid and they are probably the most colorful bunch until 09. They really are awesome villains with vibrant personalities and a massive place in the larger story. Great to have you back!

    Ehlek was my first Barraki, i had the ill fated Lime green joints and he broke extremely quickly. So i went to using his claws for mocs I did. I personally love the design of them seeming to lack armor, or feeling "unfinished" to me it added to the idea they are underwater creatures, so of course they would look different from the Toa, but the lore also helps this given they are mutated. So it would be assumed that if we ever did get sets of them before their mutation, they might actually have armor and look more like what we have gotten in earlier sets. The squid launchers where never something I liked so i often took them off the set, just because I felt they looked cooler without them.

    These guys might be my favorite set of 6. Hotly contested by the Metru and Phantoka, but the concept here comes across SO strongly. Amazing new molds with strange organic designs, amazing color schemes, distinct creature concepts for each king. Just incredible. I see what you're getting at calling them bare, but I think the punch of these guys is their heads and weapons -- they're emaciated, horrid things with spindly bodies and vicious, deadly "sharp bits." No substance, all malice. I agree they could have been more fleshed-out, but I think that's not enough to keep them from being THE villain group, to me.
    I find it interesting you reviewed the Mahri before the Barraki! Technically it was the six kings who came out first, if I remember correctly.

    Carapar was my first Barraki I ever bought, but Pridak will always be my favorite one and Kalmah was the last Barraki I needed to complete the whole set.

    Always our favorite villains from Bionicle (besides the obvious and maybe the Sand Tribe bois). Unique design based on a subject we were always interested in, a creepy appearance, abilities based on the creatures they were based on, and a funny joke with Takadox looking like a mantis because mantis shrimp. Also it's thank to them we got introduced to one of our favorite bands of all time. 2007 was always our favorite year and the Barraki were a big part of it. All seven of them

    The Barraki were my second and final complete team of villains. Four out of the six would have their heads reused or recolored later on. Kalmah (red) was my first, while Carapar (the seaweed yellow one) was my last. Takadox (blue) was my third, and he marks the final appearance of the Visorak feet and Piraka legs in Metru blue (earth blue). His twin knives also appeared in one other constraction-scale set and one of the minifigure-scale playsets (8926) that year. Kalmah's knee and shoulder armor in the melded pattern is unique to him and Thulox (the red Hydruka), and he is the first canister-size set to have the Rahkshi legs and Piraka torso in Metru red (New Dark red). His tentacle would appear in other colors over the following five years, appearing the most often in black. On Carapar, all of the seaweed yellow parts are exclusive to him, and he is the second of three sets to have the Toa Metru hip piece in Keet-orange (flame yellow). He is the first of three sets to have the Inika legs in dark stone gray, and the Rahkshi feet in the same color are exclusive to him. His head-along with Takadox's appears in two other colors later on. Mantax (black) was my fifth, and he-along with Pridak (white) marks the first canister set to have the Rahkshi legs in black, as well as the final appearance of the Piraka knee armor in the same color. His feet are also in other sets later on in different colors. The Rahkshi torso beam in black is new to Bionicle, but it technically debuted in two "Vikings" sets in the two years before that. The mid section of his tail in black also debuted in the second of those (7021) in '06. Ehlek (green) was my second, though I honestly don't remember having the lime joint problem, considering that I had two of the three '07 sets with them. He was the final set to have the webbed Piraka feet and the Vahki leg and hip piece in Metru green (earth green). He and Pridak are the only sets to have the Toa Metru double socket joints in lime green and white respectovely. His electric spikes appear in other colors later on, and he is the only Bionicle set with the Technic 4x4 angular beam in lime green. Lastly, Pridak, was my fourth Barraki, and is the last set to have the Toa Nuva limbs all together. His feet appear in one other set, but are recolored in Metru green. The Mahritoran blades on his shoulders in white also appear in only one other set after this...

    apperently the previous year lego went way overbudget, the mahri shooters where going to be really expensive compared to other peices. pridak actually had *two* spines. and the origional design for the squid launchers where so powerful that they cut through aluminum foil. they had to severely nerf the launchers which is unfortunate, but alright. the more i look at these guys the more i like them.

    something I'd add that I haven't seen in the comments so far is that pridak and elek both have poses that they are designed to have, not sure about the others. Pridak's feet fold up to be a shark fin, and make him look like a shark. Elek can roll into a ball and crawl on all fours. Just another neat little play feature they added.

    I was worried something had happened to you after in the Mahri video you said you couldn't wait to do the Barraki "next week" and then vanished without a trace. Good to see that wasn't the case. But as for these guys, I'm really surprised you didn't go through and talk about each one by themselves a little the way you did the Toa Mahri since there's several interesting points you didn't even mention, such as Takadox glowing in the dark, Pridak's articulated waist, or Kalmah's tentacles being rubbery and flexible.
    I was always bothered by the lack of torso armor on Kalmah (similar to my opinion on Mahri Hahli), and that honestly bothered me more than some of them having bare limbs despite it being a clear issue. I will say, though, that the bare limbs and stick torso work in Takadox's favor instead of against him since they allow for a lot more folding of his limbs and make him look more like the scheming type rather than the strong type (an appearance that suits his canon character perfectly). I had Takadox and Carapar, and I still consider them to be the best-designed Barraki. In fact, I still have my Takadox after having to purge some of my old collection, and he was my favorite Bionicle for years before I recently got a Vezon & Fenrakk and gave the title to that set. But Takadox will always be special to me, and he looks hella creepy when you see him staring at you in a completely dark room.

    Man, I have Pridak but really wish I had gotten more of the 2007 sets. The barraki all looked so cool. I originally wanted to get ehlek, but pridak was the only one i was able to find at the store at the time

    These are a mystery for me... I remember buying one of them when i was young, it was either the white one, or the blue one. But im sure i had two of them at home, and i remember holding the red one in my hands and showing it to my grandpa, but i dont remember buying, or ever playing with it😂

    THE WAIT IS OVER!!! 🙌🙌🙌
    The Barraki are arguably the best villain wave of all Bionicle G1. No clones, all unique. (I want to include the Mistika/Phantoka Makuta, unfortunately they are similar in some way and limited of the wave parts...)
    I was skeptical about them when I started collecting, but one on one they made me love them.
    Despite Ehlek's lime joint dilema, he's my favorite. I just love these spines. Are you going to try the combiners? the only one worth trying is truly amazing... (Yes, I mean the Zyglak)
    Thanks for saying "until next time", last time you said "until next week" it felt like a month passed. 😅 Wait...

      @@JOCoStudio1 I really love the Makuta Mistika, specially Krika, but them being limited with these pesky Av-Matoran limbs are a truly letdown. :/

    I really agree that their build lack armor and bare but i don't mind that alot cause i think that make them more of a threat since they have little armor and still can bring a decent fight.

    I recently got the Tarakava set from 2001 and I was surprised about the playability of those Bionicle from that era, they were not only lego constructions, but also toys as such. Now I watch this review, I have realized how Bionicle evolved into a more action figure-like line, probably in order to accompany those kids as they grow up. Does anybody else have this feeling too?

    Those &$@& lime joints!
    My first Barrakki was Ehlek. I got him for my birthday after spending half a year hyped for the set. And then his torso turned out to be literally one liftam. And then the squid launcher turned out to suck. And then the joints broke. I remember his leg and head hanging limply, which was just sad. I got to go to the store for a replacement but those joints broke too. I then got replacement parts from online customer service, which would break randomly but could at least be replaced because there were plenty.
    Ever since I barely touched the figure in fear of damaging it again.
    Needless to say the whole experience wasn't a fun one and I my whole enjoyment of the new sets took a hit. I still kind of hate the whole breaking joints issue. Lego should have done a large-scale recall and fixed their mistake as soon as possible. And then the 2008 era joints came and they all snapped (albeit in a controlled way). It was then I learned lego can be far less about quality than they claim they are.
    Bionicle was about taking them apart, building combo models, and putting them back together again for me. The lime joint issue really should NOT have happened. And even if it did, they should have done more than passively make the customer ask for a replacement. And the 2008 joints are especially inexcusable.

    One thing i don’t like about Carapar is that they did not ad his second pincer. In the books, when we first meet Mantax, we read this:
    ”Carapar has two pincers of his own, and the longer reach on top of that”.
