This game was an absolute gem. Even forced you to learn the bionicle alphabet to an extent to get through the onu koro tunnels. I spent many a day in my childhood playing this game and again in college.
In terms of branding, LEGO NAILED it with Bionicle - awesome physical "action figures" we could collect and build ourselves, a full web game in 2001 of all times, multiple phenomenal movies (considering the audience), console games, there was so much to immerse us kids into the world of Bionicle back then!
I was 7 when I played this and I remember McDonalds was putting Bionicle toys in the Happy Meals, but more importantly, the bag had the full Bionicle Alphabet translated on it. I actually cut out that part of the bag and had it laminated to always have for stuff like this.
This game helped give Bionicle the footing it needed to save LEGO from bankruptcy. It was unlike anything seen in Flash Player at the time, and it served as an easily accessible loredump after the mystery of the initial ad campaign pulled you in. In this game, you don’t play as one of the six mighty elemental heroes; you play from the perspective of an observer looking from the ground up, and that does wonders in setting up an unparalleled atmosphere. The Toa are always spoken of in the same reverence as gods, which drastically intensifies the situation of the region you’re exploring when you suddenly find yourself face to face with one. When the Toa are on the scene, it means whatever’s going on is serious business. No other incarnation of the Toa manages to capture that feeling of awe this game creates by having you watching them at ground level. At the same time, no other incarnation of Makuta has managed to capture the overwhelming Lovecraftian sense of dread his name invoked when mentioned in this game. I distinctly remember being terrified wandering down the dark tunnels of Onu-Wahi or getting lost in the charred forests of Ta-Wahi because I’d been told what the Makuta was capable of, and it was like I could feel his presence in those dark places, made even worse by the fact that I didn’t know what Makuta looked like and could only imagine the incomprehensible horror that was stalking me through the shadows. I sincerely hope this game gets a proper post-Flash HD remaster someday, but I’m not holding my breath.
I'm with you on this. Whoever made this flash game all those years ago truly had the heart and soul of the BIONICLE franchise in mind. And I agree that while an HD remaster may not be possible, I would enjoy seeing it myself. Perhaps even made for a console lover such as myself.
There is a way to make Makuta every bit as terrifying as we used to imagine him as kids: Rare but random chance of encountering him in a darkened area, and get an instant spooky game over that sends you back to the start. Only 5% chance of it happening, and the player can escape if they hear the warning sounds and are quick enough to get out, but just knowing it could happen would keep everyone on edge.
Every now and then this game flashes back into my memory. I can't believe I was actually able to find it again. I've never met anyone else who played it or heard anyone even mention Bioncle since I was in like elementary school. I really thought this was just going to be lost to time by now, but here it is! Thank you so much for uploading this. This is truly a GEM. I can't count how many times I played this growing up. The music was truly next level and created such an air of magic and mystery. It's such a great adventure!
I played this game obsessively. Waited with baited breath for the added chapters. The game ran so slow on DSL it would take several minutes to get through pages of dialouge. My brother and I would sit in the chair together playing this all day. I love it.
From your description: "though it might be mostly nostalgia talking, this game still got a huge smile on my face." No, it's not nostalgia, this game is straight up the best licensed game ever made.
Crazy that even after all these years, I can still read the Bionicle alphabet. 28:49 "My friend went to Po-Wahi and all I got was this lousy rock" Lol.
I remember this from my childhood and i downloaded it and did a full playthrough.. I mostly remember it being this atmoshperic tour of a cool world, turns out its an entire point and click game with cutscenes and everything. honestly an impressive amount of effort for a 2001 free webhosted game... no wonder this impressed me 20 years ago
@@JimmyStiffFingers they laid the groundwork for Mata Nui being a colossal mech in this game at the deepest part of the mines. They had things planned out.
Yeah, you're right. Shame. I really liked the old Bionicle stuff. Everything sort of low tech and Everything. Didn't like the toa of light and metru nui stuff. @MrSailing101
i miss building this line...there was just something about the way the pieces fit together, not exactly like 'typical' LEGO...and then there were gear pieces and such to allow for Moving Parts, and a whole-ass Lore behind it, with games like this one (and then the not-so-great games that came afterward)?? why did LEGO ever Stop this series?
Excuse me, do you remember a point and click and side scroller flash game that had many chapters and was jungled theme, it’s from around 2000 to 2003. There was a chapter that took place in a steam boat

Somehow when I was kid getting into Bionicle I never knew this game existed, only had Bionicle Heroes and the online Mistika games.. Damn do I WISH!!! I knew about this back then, I would have been so interested. I shall have to play it for the first time some time soon.. Although, does anyone think that watching this playthrough would be pretty much as good as playing the game itself? Or would I miss out on certain things? I ask because I often struggle to finish games.
It is pretty much the same as playing the game itself, the only thing your missing out on is not understanding what to do for the puzzles, playing it and figuring it out was part of the mystery but this video definitely is encompassing the game. For example the first time with pressing the buttons in Ta Koro I didn’t know what I had to do to drain the lava…didn’t know if the buttons needed to be all Out, all in, or some other code. Watching takes away that mystery but this still gets the lore across to you accuratly
@@cjaydustie1867 Thanks, yeah that's the kind of thing I was wondering about. I don't really want to lose the mystery of it but at the same time I'm lazy and I take a long long time to finish almost any game.
If you can find a .SWF of the game, you can still play it on your desktop if you got a flash player client installed. But in terms of playing it hosted on an internet browser, flash support has been essentially purged from any modern browsers... it doesn't help that a kill switch was essentially snuck into an update for operating systems too. There is ruffle, which is a flash content emulator that could work... but I remember that there wasn't any real save feature built into the game or at least one which worked... so just playing it on your browser should suffice.

I agree 1000% and I remember how much I hated the 2003 Mask of Light film as a kid because of how much it watered down everything.
Nah. Definitely wouldn’t go that far. Bionicle itself saved lego.

I replayed it a few years ago on my laptop and blew through it much faster than I ever would have on my old desktop.

I played this so long ago as a child it almost feels like a dream. I can't believe i finally found this
it took me so long to remember the name, my mind is truly blown right now 😂
played this with my brothers as a kid - I legit cried at the end :') good times
Can’t believe how much effort went into this whole franchise, especially at the beginning. Many after school days were spent on these games.
i remember playing this game as a kid not able to figure out anything just wander around the first village for hours
Same omg I had no idea it was so long!
First few times, I got lost in the burnt forest, marking Xs on the trees, thinking it was supposed to trigger something.
Me, I just wandered about in most of the areas I unlocked. Couldn't get to the ice
You could always tell how good your internet was by how smooth these cinematics ran.
Damn, I had completely forgotten about this game. I remember playing the hell out of it when I was a kid.
My mom was addicted to this game with me lol
Oh man i remember this game so much!!!
I couldn't even play past 10 minutes of it because i didn't know english back then lol - how time flies!!! 😆😁
The soundtrack is so underrated
Holy shit, i played this soooooo many times as a kid. This was one of the best things to ever happen.
One of, if the best, Bionicle games ever
2:38:24 They did not hold back foreshadowing Takanuva back in 2001.
Highly doubt they knew they wanted the chronicler to be the Toa of light. They just pulled it out of their behinds to continue the line.

I would love to see this game remade in the style of the modern zelda games (BOTW / TOTK). Might even do it myself.

Yes. On a site called biomediaproject. They have archived probably everything related to bionicle.
wanne make this game as a tohunga in a 3D animation , with more interractions with this concept, would be great :)
