Dude you scored with that 510. It's from my old neighborhood Ocean Beach, in San Diego Ca. The original builder was a guy on Ratsun who "converted" it after the car was stolen and thrashed. Even had built wholes in it so he figured what the hell. It sold for $6K like 10 years ago and the new owner cleaned it up a bit. Datsun folk would soil their britches if you did that to an unmolested 510; this one's perdesastered though so HAVE FUN WITH IT!!! Sounds like a little rigidity, chassis alignment, and suspension work would deal with the death rocket aspect and open the door to a little engine Improvement. Guy's on Ratsun can help with all that. Looking forward to seeing where you take it and welcome to the Datsnuts funny farm..
Metallic pea green. Maybe wrap that roll bar if you decide one chrome deleting. Do a proper speaker housing that looks stockish behind the back seat in the rear tech area. A small spoiler but more like one that is blended with the body. A small chin spoiler. See if you can get a custom soft top made because why not? What about one of those dual pipe japanese exhaust systems that come up like stacks about mid trunk height. Rut I wish I lived near you I think it would be a blast to brainstorm with you.
Rutledge, I believe this is my old 510 i cut the roof myself and it was white when i had it and it looks like from the scratches there is white underneath. Please tell me you bought this in the 209 area code, i sold it in Sonora area in Cali but could have been in the Modesto area too, still 209 area code. Looks dead on the same....
Bump for an update on the Dime Cabriole y'all. Maybe that $2K price tag was foreshadowing the reality to come. My guess is that after tare down Rut found more work than expected, and he'll need more than just a trunk . 50 year old 510s are designed to decompose, and with a bunch of cut members and no roof that's turned up to 11. After 40+ years of keeping 510s on the road I've learned that even free can be too expensive. I'm sure Wood's love for this one will take it to another level, but PLEASE update so I don't die of curiosity. 🙏
Cool ride. But I THINK you should do the car justice and put the roof back on. Yes I understand it's a shit ton of work, yes I understand the values of these cars (I have a 69 2 door) but they are too cool 9f a ride to have no roof. Either way I am interested to see how this plays out! I have a trunk lid, but it needs work, and I'm in CA
Add a sub frame and have Robello go through the motor but with a mild cam so you will have some torque. L1600 can be a great round town motor and obviously a great race motor but racing setups are terrible for just driving around so keeping the tune mild is the best thing to do. Since it’s been chopped it’s got total license to be a Frankenstein car so do what you want with it. If you are gonna do it then really really do it. Flare the fenders a bit, paint, JDM everything, etc. perhaps a roadster BRE type setup with flares and chin splitter. Look at all the BRE 510, roadster, and Z car photos or just head over to Carolla’s and just see them in person. otherwise just get it safe and strong running and kinda leave it ratty. Look over the builds form Z car garage ( owner named Rob) and the road builds from Troy Ermish racing. Additionally Les Cannaday from Classic Datsun is a wealth of information on all matters 510. If you build it you are gonna have to go on Carolla and Matt D’Andria’s show obviously.
brothers & sisters guess what day it is our uncle Matt Dibenedettos 30th birthday yea yea we love you uncle Matt god bless you uncle waltrip today is his big day time to surprise him with a new Kia K5 gt for uncle matt's collection uncle Rutledge todays uncle matt's birthday maybe you can go pick up the all new kia K5 for uncle matts birthday to surprise him with ~Nascar Daughter
Every 510 guy I know would cring!! 😬😖 I would put a roof back on it.. Hopefully the car isn't bowed down in the center. The door doesn't close right, so that's probably the reason. The roof provides part of the structural integrity of the car. So if you don't plan on putting the roof back on it, you should definitely strengthen the unibody.. Otherwise a couple of guys your size will have your butts scraping the ground after a bump..
Please don't put fender mirrors on it. They are JDM only and also completely useless. The look is so played out. I remember this car, the guy got made fun of mercilessly for ruining a solid car.

Maximum Dangers 😆 That thing need racing stripes like right now!
That is so rad! I would rock that beast. What a deal!!!
I would be tempted to throw like an R34 midnight purple paint job on it 😎
that is what I said too
I have one as well
Nice Datsun, I'm local to fayetteville/PTC, thought I was the only one with a 510 project, I sure hope to see it cruising around soon!
That’s is so you Rutledge! Maybe craft a Tonneau cover for rear deck? And a wild color or colors from the 70’s! And re-brace that unibody for safety.
Great car enjoy.. can't remember the last time I saw one on the road

I wish Lost in Transmission was still on. I would have had a project right up Rut’s alley. Jeep Comanche.
Great new project. Hopefully you'll have an update on the tacoma coming soon.
amazing. love these cars. make eleventeen videos of this plz!
Rut that car is perfect for you 🤣
BRE Style paint in candy flake. and Datsuns are cool AF, I have two, a 72 521 and a 81 720.
I would paint it like a Browns helmet and tailgate during Browns games.
My favorite body style car.
First I was like, who the heck cut the roof off of a 510. Then I began to see its potential to be sooo cool.
I have a Datsun 510 convertible as well, roll bar, but I have box flares on mine
Looking forward to this project. Go full Rocket Bunny!

When is the K-van going up for sale? Let's go purple on the 510.
2000 a steal! Its worth that in parts haha

Yes Dave Robello from Danville, he has worked on my 510s in the past.

I remember seeing this for sale. I thought it was cool, but not really for me.
I think it should be repainted the same color.

Don’t paint it Rut. It looks good just like it is.

Are you referring to John510? The way he tells it the car was stolen and rolled so he figured WTF.
Check your twitter I sent you my idea
