This summer I have an acting class at my local community college and I'm gonna be playing a role in a homemade short film my friend is directing. You have inspired me a lot, thank you!! I am nervous yet excited for what this journey has to offer me

What specifically are they teaching at this college, if you don't mind me asking? It's better to find a school that focuses on one approach if you can and complete that program. Whether it's a Meisner school; a method school; Stella Adler etc. Is irrelevant. Any school that focuses or has a program that focuses on ONE approach to acting will be better than one that gives you a little bit of each. It's a lot like martial arts training. Pick a style; master it; move on to the next one. Sanford Meisner said that "colleges are where you'll see the worst acting". Of course if that's all you have available to you then you work from where you are with what you have available to you. Don't be nervous... you ARE going to fuck up at some point in time but that's how we learn. Just try to make sure you get the biggest fuck up's out of the way in class - not on stage in front of a paying audience. But definitely expect to screw up - it's a trial by fire. We learn from our mistakes but it's also important to know that there is no such thing as a "mistake" on stage. Whatever happens... you have to make THAT work. That which hinders your task... IS your task.
If you relax you'll be the best you.
Fearlessness is invincibility 😇. Anything that you practice regularly you master. Please practice controlling your fear. Nothing will be able to stop you if you’re not scared, or afraid. It’ll make you a better person, as well, as an amazing Actor.
That's so true I remember once before going into an audition I asked myself do you want to be an actress...than act like your not afraid.. it worked...thanks for reminding me of that.
Clint Eastwood used to talk sh*t to the camera when no one was looking; threatening the camera to help him overcome his fear, but of course that was while working on feature films - not during auditions.
Another thing that helps with overcoming pre-audition jitters is to take acting classes and do theater. The school I go to has several theaters (three locations; each with a stage in the class). So during class you're performing on a stage in front of a live audience.
We also do plays with paying audience members but even before that I was performing in plays at a small theater in Hollywood & as you all know there's no safety net in live theater. It's a "trial by fire". You don't get to say "cut! let's do it again!" and when you've worked in that environment; under that kind of pressure for a few years - auditions start to get easier.
When you have been on stage in front of a live audience and F'd up a few shows; kicked yourself; got back up & jumped right back into the fire you start to become "Ok" with yourself. You stop beating yourself up and start getting out of your own way. You stop expecting yourself to be perfect and the focus becomes more on being the most honest actor you can be rather than the "greatest".
Your focus determines your reality. If you're focused on failure it's the only thing you'll ever be ready for. BTW, NOTHING will help you build greater focus and concentration than a good acting class and the level of focus you gain as an actor crosses over into other areas of life.
I do this every audition to get a sense of my choices and to see how it’s coming across. Great tips! :-)

I did have a question, for auditions, are props a yes or no? One of my scrips involves a diner & milkshakes haha and not sure if I should fake it or have a prop! Thank you again for being amazing!!
Congrats on the short film! As far as props go, if they are essential to the scene, use them. If not, ignore it. Don't mime!
For example, if the script says "Jim is drinking a beer" but nothing in the scene refers to the beer or requires the beer, then I would do the audition without it. But if it says "Jim takes a sip of beer" and then he has a line that says "Wow, that's the best beer I've ever tasted!". Well, then I would have to use the prop or it would look ridiculous for me to say that without doing the action.
@@ActingCareerCenter Thank you so much!! That’s amazing advice! The line says that my character “takes a sip of (her) milkshake before responding” so I guess it would be safe to have a cup there to take a fake sip out of!
@@jordinhodges5213 Honestly, I wouldn't even fake the sip. Put some water in there and take a real sip. Make everything real. The more real it is, the less it looks like acting. :)

I hate watching myself act but not as much as I did before I started taking classes. It was only after I had my first supporting role in a feature film that I realized I'm a shitty actor and need to work on myself. After seeing my face on a giant screen; chewing the scenery, I decided to STOP pursuing a career in acting and start pursuing an education/training. It's a long story but at the movie premiere the girl that was with me SCREAMED when she saw me on screen; then I watched my own performance and wanted to crawl under my chair. So I decided to STOP acting and just train but it was while in training that I signed with my current agent at a very reputable agency. I had already decided to stop acting in order to train then all of a sudden... I've got an agent who's sending me out on auditions which I still don't feel I'm ready for. But I can't say "no" to my agent so I just do the best I can do. And NEVER say "no". Unless she submits me for a part where I have to kiss a dude. I'm not into dudes. lol!

Hey I got a quick question so I want to be an actor but I’m male with a high pitch voice and I’m 17 but I can’t sing do you think I can make it in the Industry with my voice and have people take me serious if I had to rate it on how high it is it’s like 7 1-10 and for how deep it is it’s like a 6 1-10
Look at Steve Buscemi's teeth then ask yourself the same question. Be who you already are. Hollywood doesn't need the next Brad Pitt. They've already got one and he's pretty good at being Brad Pitt. Hollywood needs YOU and YOUR distinct voice. Being "different" didn't stop Gaten Matarazzo from getting cast in the show Stranger Things.

I made the same mistake in college (long before I became an actor). It was a speech class and I spent so much time researching the subject that I didn't give myself enough time to memorize my speech. I ended up having to read from my final draft but EVERYONE in class wanted a copy of it. It was about corruption between the FDA and Pharmaceutical companies. The first draft was 21 pages and I had to condense that down to it's essence in one page.

The live zoom audition is very different to a self tape. It feels like this lovely advice is better for self tapes? Could you talk about eye line etc? Also it’s not advisable to use your phone for a zoom I’ve been told to use my laptop. 🙏🏼

That happened to me. Everything was perfect, as soon as I stepped on the mark, my memory went blank. It was embarrassing. But I also did not eat anything before the audition, so I kind of had the feeling that my blood sugar dropped and it affected my memory in that moment. Note to myself from now on: ALWAYS EAT BEFORE YOUR AUDITION! I only laughed at myself afterwards. Maybe it's a lesson one needs to have. LOL
What Kurt says about the tripod is very true. I actually got the one that he recommended and it has definitely paid for itself
I got the wrong damn tripod. It would be perfect if I was four feet tall but I'm not so I need to get a better one.

I’ve just come across your videos, which I’m finding great. I’m definitely going to be following your advice on how to physically do a self tape. But I was wondering if you have tips on actually acting for a self tape,as I’m finding casting directors in the UK are not returning to live auditions and prefer to stick to self tapes.
I was quite good at securing roles at live auditions, but I’m struggling to come across through self tapes.

Hi, everyone! My name is Denys and I'm Ukrainian. I have a question. What should I do if I decided to became an actor(but I'm from foreign country) ?
He's already answered this question in several videos. Search his channel and you'll find answers which have already been provided.
But in a nut shell - we don't livr in your country so we don't know what resources you have available to pursue a career in acting because we have the resources that are available in Los Angeles or Atlanta (US).
All I can say is that if you want an Oscar... you're going to have to come to Los Angeles to get it. They don't do Oscar ceremonies in Ukraine or France or Germany or England. There's only one place you can get an Oscar and we have some pretty good schools out here too if you're just starting out.
If you have a good school where you're already at though I recommend training where you already are; do theater where you already are. Then when you're ready - get a passport. But you don't need to come to America to be an actor.

I started acting before I started training and one thing I've noticed is that I'm "nailing" the scene in FAR fewer takes than I needed before I was training. Most auditions these days are "self tape" and I went from getting the scene in 20-30 takes to knocking it out in two or three.
I'm kind of in the same boat; already had my first supporting role in a feature film before I even started training. But after seeing my own performance on a HUGE screen I realized I'm a shitty actor and need to work on myself. I never wanted to see a performance like that again so I quit acting and started training... got a year and a half through the two year program... then the Plandemic happened.

I don't know about Atlanta but I can tell you that things are starting to pick up in Los Angeles (production is gearing up again). The acting school I attend is still on hold but I'm getting a LOT more auditions over the past month than I have this whole past year. I've had six auditions this year and the last three were within the last month.

I didn't take my first acting class until 26. I moved to Atlanta at 34. You are not even close to too old. In fact, there is no such thing in this industry.

Depends on what city you're in and what resources you have available to you. If you're in Los Angeles you can attend one of the greatest acting schools on earth for only $225. per month (or pay thousands up front to train at Stella Adler or AFI or the American Academy of Dramatic Arts all of which are no better than Playhouse West).
If you take yourself seriously as an actor - don't go to a college for acting. Find a school that specializes in acting. One approach to acting, whether it's Meisner or Method or Adler etc.

BTW keep in mind that most acting teachers are now teaching online classes. So basically once you've decided which approach to acting is right for you (Meisner/Method/Adler etc) then you locate a teacher that teaches this approach or make a list of teachers that are teaching what you want to learn then go down that list and contact each one of them. Not every teacher is the same even if they're teaching the same thing. You need to find the ONE that's right for you.
Some teachers are really hard on their students; yell at them and insult them like they think it's the military or something. Of course any good teacher will hold you to a high standard and they should have high expectations of you but some are more like cheerleaders than drill sergeants.
My teacher is amazing; her teacher was Jeff Goldblum and Jeff's teacher was Sandy Meisner. She does teach an online class as well. I don't know how much she charges online but at school I'm paying $225 per month which is the best price your going to find anywhere for a reputable teacher. Other schools charge thousands up front and you have to sign a contract for years or at least six months. My school (and teacher) charges month by month.

That's a question I get all the time and it's not a simple answer. Getting an audition for MCU is similar to getting an audition for any major movie or television show. There are three main factors that come into play.
1. Your experience - A major show is unlikely to give an audition to an actor with little to no experience. That would be like the Los Angeles Lakers giving a tryout to someone who has never played basketball before. It took me many years of training and working on small unknown projects to build up my resume and my demo reel in order to start getting auditions for major studios like Marvel and Netflix. For some people, it won't take that long. For others, it will take longer. Everyone progresses at a different pace and everyone has a different path. If you already have great training and great experience working in theatre or student films or short films or independent films and a demo reel that shows off your skills, then you are probably ready to audition for major movies and shows. If you don't have these things yet, don't feel bad. Everyone starts from somewhere. Take steps towards getting there but be patient. There is no need to rush. Start with acting classes if you haven't already.
2. Your representation - The vast majority of major movies and shows will not post their auditions publicly. They will usually go through talent agents to find actors to audition. MCU auditions will probably never be posted publicly. If you don't have an agent, it's very unlikely you will get an audition for MCU. Getting signed by a great talent agent is also dependent on what we talked about above. Agents want actors who have excellent training and experience acting in plays and short films and similar projects. They want actors who have proven that they are serious about their careers. Actors who don't have any training will probably not be taken seriously by most agencies. Agents will also want you to have a professional headshot and resume because they will need those things to pitch you to the casting directors to help get you auditions. 3. Your location - It's important to understand that the film and television industry is a business and the primary goal of a business is to make a profit. In order to make a profit, businesses try to save money wherever they can. In our industry, productions try to hire local actors because it costs less. For example, the last two MCU shows, Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision, were both filmed in Atlanta. They will gave most of their auditions to actors that live in Atlanta or the surrounding cities. The reason is because hiring a local actor costs less than hiring an actor who lives far away. They don't have to pay for a flight or a hotel. In the US, the three major production hubs are Los Angeles, Atlanta, and New York City. Most actors who want to pursue a career in film and television eventually move to one of these cities because they know they have the highest chance of getting auditions if they live where the productions are taking place. Does that mean you have no chance if you don't live in one of these cities? No, you can definitely still find auditions for projects that DO film in your area. Another great reason to be in acting class because that's where you will find out what productions are happening near you.

Thanks for the advice but I have a question. When you're doing the callbacks (zoom and live in the same room), do you have a friend over as the reader or will the casting director be the reader?
Both are acceptable. I like to have a friend be my reader because I'm more comfortable with them and I've rehearsed it with them. However, if you don't have anyone, the CD will typically read with you.

I recommend people have BOTH Casting Networks and Actors Access. Both are used by agents and casting directors in the industry. My agents send me auditions via both platforms.
The old Casting Networks site was horribly outdated and had many problems. The new design will probably have issues as they roll it out but I'm expecting it to eventually be a huge improvement.

If you want to work on projects in the US, you would most likely need to move to the US and establish permanent residency or get a work visa. Otherwise, it would be illegal for a US company to hire you
Hey Kurt, i've been watching ur videos for a couple months and i really wanted to be an actor, but my parents didn't support me, and i watch one of ur videos and u said that taking classes is very important cause u can learn the basic and expanding ur network, my mom told me if i want to take online classes i need to at least be an extra or act before on some movie and make sure i have the talent there, cause my mom didnt want to waste any money on acting classes, the problem is its very hard to find audition on my country (Indonesia), i've been joining FB group, IG account about casting, and some website but i cant really find an audition (On IG its very rare to get an audition), how can i get some audition if im on a situation like this?
