I have a question, I'm ten years old and its my dream to become an actress but I live in Scotland, so if I signed up for a Scottish talent agency, then would I still get audition requests from American casting directors
Hey there Kurt! I’ve been following your channel for a few months and it’s one of the best gems I’ve discovered as I begin my acting journey. I sincerely appreciate the thoroughness of this video but of all your videos in general. Thank you for providing your audience with valuable insights. I hope to see you on set one day 😉 🎬
you are actually a fucking legend, I really hope running this channel is gratifying for you because you are doing a great job and really making a difference. keep it up!
It’s cool to know that you’re using a video editing program that I’m using very similarly to! I’m starting my acting class recruitment process within 2 weeks and I can’t wait!
Omg, I just have to share my excitement over the fact I just met of on croatia's most talented actor, and I was over the moon, and since I am currently unable to attend any acting related activities at the moment, I was so happy to actually see an actor in such a remote place like this one I live in. Super nice person, and it made me realize just how excited I am to pursue this route. Sorry guys but no one really knows about my plans just the Kurt Yue followers. Have a blessed day everyone!
Im planning on going to acting classes right now so not even doing auditions yet but your videos really are helpful and you explain everything very nicely. Thank you!
I got a request for a self tape just the other day and I was not prepared. I am an amateur performer and I work as a SA, and I'm relatively new to this game. The audition was for a TV commercial. I was flattered that I got asked to self tape for it, but angry with myself for not being better prepared for it. I have since bought some equipment and have started to do some research. I just wanted to say thank you for these videos, they are really helpful. Thank you.
You must be known as a very generous scene partner. Thank you so much for your tips and your generosity to your fellow actors by sharing your experience. You are very much appreciated!
Thank you for going to the trouble of showing us this process. I felt pretty intimidated by the idea of creating a professional self tape in the future, but that software looks user friendly.
Yo Kurt you are so inspiring it is so insane you have actually influenced and showed me how great this industry is would love to meet you in person one day when i become famous like you. Love from India
I truly loved this. It's such a great way of getting inspired and actually seeing the things that are usually talked about when it comes to selftaping. Thank you Kurt :) Hope you book it!
Wow!! Great tutorial!! Looking back I can see where I made sooooo many in my first audition tape!! However, the real mistake would to have not sent it at all!! I’m so happy for all your success thus far!! See you on set someday!
Kurt, I'm really glad to see your videos. I read your IMDB bio and I'm at the exact same age where you made your turning point into acting. We even did similar degrees in university! It gives me a lot of hope to start my career in acting. Great video and hopefully I can land more auditions :)
Wow, excellent video! It was really helpful to watch your whole process on video instead of just hearing about it. Thanks for taking all the time to share this info!
Still gaining a great deal of knowledge from you! I love the way you very neutraly say, "in my opinion," because we all know that no opinion is absolute. However, I must say that your opinions are pretty spot on!
Big tip on where the microphone is placed. I learned over the last few years of vlogging and uploading to YT that when the mic is down low or even at mouth level the audio can sound more tinny or nasally. If you have a mic stand that is able to go above your head and having it about three inches or so away from your face but (still out of frame) it will sound loads better. I've tested it myself and it makes a world of difference.
I was researching something about camera focus for my Nikon D5600...and this was one of the videos that popped up. Don't know why but I'm glad it did. I subscribed to your channel after finding it and have enjoyed your content. I also bought a Canon 80D after watching this along with the camera comparison video. My Nikon cameras are really ticked about it. I had been doing my audition tapes with the Canon Vixia HF R800. I did my first audition yesterday with the 80D and was very pleased. Thank you for the help you given me.
You are a Fantastic Teacher!!! and an incredible actor! Thank you for this video. Our 13 year old is starting to film self tapes and your video has helped him immensely. Thank You so much! E in Georgia
Hey I just wanted to say I am starting to act and I reallywant to make it a career and become big with it you have helped me a lot!! You have made how to start so much easier. Thank you! :)
I've been using the self tape reader app coldRead and what I have found is if I plug in my microphone to the phone I can't hear the reader lines. That's a real flaw. Fortunately it has adjustments for sound on the reader lines so you can lower it. This thing has a steep learning curve but I finally got an acceptable take.
I've watched several of your videos today, Kurt - THANK YOU. You're so thorough with each one, and it's incredibly appreciated. I subscribed to your YT, your email list, and liked a bunch of videos. :) I appreciate you.
(Sorry for my English) ( i want to be an Hollywood actor even if i am not from America i will still make it i really don't know how but i will i just want to share a positive message that you can do whatever you want and yeah i am 18 and I'm on my own) people/RUclipsr lile you gives me power and motivation to keep on moving! (And sorry if my grammar is wrong!!)😊
I love video auditions. It's a lot easier than have 25 folks waiting in the room next door. Then I'll ask for an audition from those who seem the best and closest to what I'm looking for.
Watching this video has let me know that I don't need to be sitting so close to my backdrop!! For some reason I thought I had to be right in front. But I saw you were a few feet away from your background and it looked great!!
It's actually better if the backdrop is slightly out of focus but you're PERFECTLY in focus. That's why I like to use an 85mm lens for auditions and put some distance between myself and the backdrop. The bigger the backdrop the better because then you can create distance without hitting the edge of the backdrop. I know a lot of actors that just paint one of the walls in their home a neutral color and use that. That gives you a lot more room to play with and a lot more options when it comes to lightning. More room to set up your lights and experiment; bouncing light off a reflector or bounce board. Indirect & defused light is always better in my opinion.
Great video. As a working actor do you recommend going bold with the material or sticking to every direction or suggested emotion? Has going outside the box worked for you? Thanks!
First of all, I really enjoy all of your videos. Second, I have two questions: 1. How do you practice a scene without a scene partner? 2. Is it weird if you only have two or three acting classes on your resume?
You can practice with the virtual reader. And no, it's not weird to have 2-3 classes when you are starting. You can keep training with different classes as you go through auditioning and your career!
You can use a rehearsal app like Rehearsal Pro or Cold Reader. Or you can use a simple voice recorder. But a virtual reader is definitely the most effective, in my opinion. There's no standard amount of acting classes that should go on a resume. For many years, I only had one class on my resume because that was the only class available in my city. I would just go to that same ongoing class every week.
Thx Kurt! This is my 2nd time watching this video....you make it look soo easy. What about us tech challenged actors? What do you recommend? This year I really wanna increase the professional look of my self-tapes...think maybe I'll book more! 😅
Love what you’re doing, but as a Senior Actor, AEA since 1968 and SAG and AFTRA the following year, I’m not particularly Tech savy. I can’t see where you are getting certain elements to perform the desired task. I finally figured out how to crop the Slate using Vegas Studio 16, which is like a small victory, but I’m at a loss regarding trimming, joining and fade up and down. I’ve watched several tutorials and find them completely incomprehensible. Please advise… Cheers
Great video as usual Kurt! Sooo glad you showed that although you shoot horizontally you crop it to a vertical format. I shoot mine in my garage and have to use vertical to crop out what's beyond my non distracting background. Otherwise people will think I'm 'Buffalo Bill' from 'Silence of the Lambs.' 😉 Also kind of curious why you put your slate at the end as opposed the beginning?
For 99% of my film and television auditions, the casting directors request the slate either at the end or in a separate file entirely. Very rarely do they ask for the slate at the beginning. It's more common for commercial auditions to ask for the slate in the beginning.
Thank you for sharing your process. A curious question, when you first started off, how much time did you put into acting a week? What did your week consist of?
When I first started I was only doing it for fun and had no plans to pursue this as a career. Because of that, it was treated as a hobby and I spent maybe 3-5 hours on it per week. As I gradually became more serious about it, it grew to probably 20 hours per week.
Hello Kurt, as I stated in an earlier comment- great video. Q: is it ok to edit a piece of video within the bigger final video clip? Explanation: say you’re recording and you flob a line- you notice it as your recording. After recording your whole scene can you re-record just the area where you flobbed the line and edit it in during the editing process - maybe utilize an almost transparent video transition effect so it’s hardly noticeable or should the scene be one long clip without any edits in it? Your video scenes seem to all be done in one take with no mistakes or editing within each scene. Thanks

Fabulous! From start to finish an excellent example of prep - especially the tape on the wall! Dig the DIY to hi end equipment options! Thank you

It must be nice working with u because u seem to be professional.
TBH, if he lived in a second tier city, I think he'd be working all the time. Super professional, super prepared.
Just goes to show how much work it is to be an actor. The auditioning alone!
Yes, Finally another video I have been waiting for a week for another video.
best free material an actor could ask for, beautiful work.

I’m gonna be huge because of you. Thanks man!
Could you make a quick video explaining the temperature you set your lights to and also the camera setting to fit that?
Thank God I found it. This is pretty helpful.
