Hi Kurt, I just wanted to give you a big thank you. I have been doing theater for 6 years and decided my New Year’s resolution was to make the transition to film, and your audition cheat sheet and videos on self tape really helped me out. I’ve already wrapped up a supporting role in a short film and I’ve already booked a second role in March!! Thank you so much for showing me that it’s not as difficult as you think it is if you do it the right way
This year marks 4 years that I’ve been a working actor, & man I wish I could’ve received this advice 4 years ago. I did a lot of those steps out of order & my career was at an extreme low last year because of it. That low ruined my confidence. I had a conversation with my manager & we both thought it would be great for me to start back over from ground 0. I’ve been taking an auditioning class for the past 2 months & I’ve learned a lot. I plan on taking a bunch of classes this year to sharpen my skills & add to my actor’s toolbox. Thank you for all the advice & insight. You are truly appreciated!
I’m trying to be an actor, and I’m under 18 and I’m also not old enough to get a real job. That’s been hard lol. Since my parents don’t really support my dream I’ve been having to save money myself without my parents help, as well as finding classes and groups. But your videos have been a big help for things I didn’t understand❤
you are old enough! though there are less jobs, people can get acting jobs as young as an infant. if you're 10-16 theres plenty for you, even 5-10 too!
Man, I genuinely LOVE your advice on doing extra background work before jumping right into the hot seat. Being able to observe with no pressure is so valuable, yet many people underestimate its value. You can get a feel for the set and even watch professionals work and learn from them. Maybe even network with someone that takes you to side or primary roles. Appreciate your videos man.
I've taken acting classes but were never serious about it. I would do my monologues and scenes in class but after class I never REALLY took the time to practice and put what I was learning in class into action. I'm taking this year to go back to 0 and start all over. Happy to come on youtube and find the exact video I needed to get back into this. It's time to focus!
Good luck with that! I'm also taking my first acting classes this year and I'm so excited. RUclips's algorithm sometimes is a huge win with such informative channels.
On Background roles. Another side benefit can be the possibility of getting "bumped up" in category. On the day, a director might decide that they really like your look and ask you to be a bit more present in a shot.Giving you an added opportunity to learn something new and, hopefully, even get paid a bit more than scale.
Dear Mr. Kurt, I wanted to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for the incredible work you do, both as an actor and as a mentor on your RUclips channel. I have been following your journey for years now, admiring not only your talent but also your generosity in sharing your experiences with others. Your dedication to supporting new actors and dreamers like myself is truly admirable and deeply appreciated. Many moons ago, I had the opportunity to ask you a question about your approach to delivering lines in a dialogue scene, and I was genuinely touched by your thoughtful response. It was a surreal experience for me, as it was the first time I had ever interacted with a celebrity, let alone someone as accomplished and generous as yourself. Your willingness to take the time to engage with your audience speaks volumes about your character and your commitment to paying it forward in an industry that can often feel daunting to newcomers like myself. As I continue to pursue my own dreams in the world of acting, I find inspiration in your journey and your words of wisdom. My sincerest wish for you is to see you land lead roles in many upcoming big TVs and movies, as your talent and passion deserve to be showcased on the grandest of stages. BREAK A LEG!
Exactly. I got some great headshots from someone who needed to take some headshots to build their portfolio, and needed a certain type. They were free to shoot, plus copy.
Hello, my name is Tanner and I have been watching you ever since I started acting back in 2020 and the videos helped me out a ton and glad to see you updating this channel. I just want to thank you for having channel as a resource and it’s nice to see a fellow Asian actor. One day we shall be on the same set whatever and whenever that may be!
Found your channel 2 years ago and I’ve watched all your videos, I can confidently say you are the number one person that inspired me to move to Atlanta from Mexico and start taking acting classes, remember this comment when you see me on the big screen in a few years. Thanks Kurt
Thank you Kurt- your videos got me started and after one year of pursuing acting in the DC/Maryland/VA area (and including my wife and kids into it), I have booked over 30 gigs (with several different speaking roles), built a reel, and am in the process of getting representation in LA for my family and myself. And I just turned 40, so anything is possible.
I am from Maryland (Laurel) and I started pursuing an acting career at 51 and I agree that anything is possible, there are many opportunities in entertainment for people my age and older.
I'm beyond thankful for finding your video! I'm ready to start taking the steps to make my dreams come true. I love laughing and making others laugh. It's always been my dream and with the help of your video I get to make that possible
I got a chance to be an extra in a TV show, Mayor of Kingstown. Now I'm obsessed, and I want to do more. But I don't know if I have what it takes to do a part with lines, so I'm doing some research. This is the first video I've watched so far. I don't think I can take acting classes just because I have bills and I can't miss work for something like that
@RazorShalom so first thing I did, they only used my car. You see it for 1 second I think on episode 8. Then I was a prisoner for the last episode, but you can't see me. There's a scene where you see the prisoners all out in the courtyard from far away, then there's another where the warden is talking on the phone and the prisoners are walking around in the background, but blurred. They filmed his death scene that day, but only about 40 people got picked out of the 200 that were there, I wasn't lucky enough to get picked. I should hopefully get in more next season. My friend actually got very lucky with his part as an extra, he's one of Evelyn's personal security guards, so you accually see him a lot
I am so glad I found your channel! The demo reel really hit me like "duh". That's the first thing I will do today! I have several monologues I've done myself. Also most background jobs want a current well lit selfie
Hi Kurt, this video popped up on my feed tonight! I needed to hear this. I took a hiatus from acting classes last summer; and have been afraid to come back. I am going back to classes next month and cannot wait. Your pep talk came at the right moment. I am going to keep practicing and I will you see you on set! Thank you!😊
Its nice to see you make video like these for 2024. I have been feeling a bit intimidated lately about how to go about this. Even started wondering if it was even possible to achieve this career. With how things have been, everything seems scary and hopeless. You rekindled my hope. Thanks for making these Kurt ^_^
MY DUDE I CAME ACROSS YOUR YOUR CHANNEL AND I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR CONTENT ON ACTING TIPS IM STARTING MY JOURNEY MARCH 30TH IN NYC SCHOOL CALLED HB STUDIO 10 WEEKS AND THEN I WILL GO FROM THERE REMEMBER THE NAME MACEO PHOENIX IM COMING 🙏🏾💯😃
Hi Kurt, really wanting to get started in an acting career. I’ve got the headshot now all I need is to sign myself up for acting classes, your videos have been really helping me out in providing advice in kickstarting a potential career in acting.
Seen you the other day on tv here in Italy. I was like wow that's the coach on youtube! Might be some csi type stuff, but not sure, can't remember. Thanks
Thanks for the video, Kurt. Interesting point on headshots - your shift from needing professional ones to accepting amateur shots for indie/student films is reasonable. It’s a practical approach to gain experience before splurging on a professional headshot.
Thank you! This is such great insight & confirmation that I’m on the right track with your steps. It’s been two years for me & I will say that I’ve been focused on commercials at first because I thought it would be easier (not necessarily) And then I took scene work classes & I fell in love with tv/film. So I’m still in the developmental stages of my career but I do have a commercial agent, I’m part of different acting communities, I network, I take classes, i research, I scout the casting sites, I have mentors. And even though I wish I booked more jobs, I know that if I keep doing these things consistently, the results will show.
Hi Kurt! I’m from Ohio too! I’ve fallen in love with acting. You’ve helped me with my self tapes and I’ve been so grateful I’ve been given opportunities. You’re amazing & thank you! 😊
Thank you, Kurt! Invaluable advice for anyone starting out in their careers. This really lays the foundation while being realistic and gives you the roadmap to starting out in the business. 😄
Well appreciated video, Kurt! I just finished my theatre and performance studies degree with a concentration in acting at Kennesaw State University here in Atlanta and I’m just getting started. I must admit that just figuring out what to do with Actors Access and what to apply for have been unusually challenging for me. I appreciate that you have industry-based content that complements acting training nicely.
What I find hurts actors is the latest concept of the "referral". I've found it's hard to find an agent when you can't simply submit your reels and resume. Thankfully I work in the Chicago market that doesn't have this mentality. Yet, Atlanta truly has embraced it.
Thank you for this material! It has been encouraging to see that this can be done. It is possible to make a living as an actor or entertainer. I have some experience acting in plays, musicals and operas, without pay (or for little pay) and I'm doing research and trying to learn about this field of work. Your videos have helped me understand this field of work. I'm hoping to work in film but at present I'm researching and looking to understand the industry and the work involved to get my foot in the door. Thank you for these videos - I'll be watching for more.
I auditioned for Bass Reeves twice and the 1st role was given to a stunt guy out of L.A. I feel like I'm wasting my time on these auditions. Appreciate your content though thanks Kurt!
That kind of stuff happens all the time. It's the reality of the industry. Not too long ago I went 80+ auditions without a booking. Sometimes you just gotta keep pushing forward.
Hi Kurt! Been a fan of yours for quite some time and was happy to see you on set today and be your stand in for WT-S2! I want to be just like you when I grow up. 😅 J
Very good advice I wish I had heard 50 years ago, but we didn't have cell phones. Re: acting classes. Beginning actors need to be told to avoid the bullies and gatekeepers. Many popular teachers are verbally abusive to certain students.
I am watching the resident while watching this and looked up and I SAW YOU! I was in shock, the irony that I was watching your videos because I want to be an actor and I look up and see your face on my tv🤣🤣
Subscribed! Thanks for this! I’m a working voice actor but i was speaking to a talent scout about doing on screen work so this was helpful and insightful for me.
I've been BG since 2021, since The Last of Us which was shot here in Calgary, AB. I've been really wanting to get at least 1 role so I can get at least 1 credit! Appreciate all the tips.
I live in albuquerque New Mexico. Film business here has been big. I'm a photographer but I think I'd bring decent infront of the camera lol. Wish me luck
Hello Kurt, I just want to say thank you so much for all your videos that you do to become an actor. I started in 2020 when nothing was the same and I followed training and watched all your videos which really helped me a lot on many points. I managed to get my UDA number in Canada like ACTRA in the US if I'm not mistaken. Unfortunately, I have not yet had real spoken roles on real productions, for the moment only extras on this type of filming and some student filming but I am not giving up, I am investing a lot in training and demos and I know that one day it will be my turn but your videos really help me a lot and I wanted to thank you❤❤
Hello Kurt first of all i wanted to thank you for helping so many people who are actors and want to be actors. I hope you can maybe help me or just give me an advice it would be really great. Im under 18 and i really want to act, my parents want me to focus on school and iam focused on school and i think it is really important. I think they would Support me but i dont live in a big market im living in germany and the closest to our city is Berlin but it is still over an hour away so there arent many acting classes in my area and we dont have time to drive there. I dont know if your going to read it but i hope you all have a great day and good luck with your careers! :)
Try local theatre Take online acting classes Work on getting a main job and pursue acting as a hobby until you're concinced you want to do it professionally.
It's not necessary to live in a big market when you are first starting out, especially now that there are so many acting classes available online. I spent the first eight years of my acting career in a small market. I lived six hours away from the biggest market in my region. Don't worry so much about location right now. You can definitely get started with online acting classes!
I have been blessed to been on some films and I still have no agent or manger! I find it the hardest thing to get! But I will not stop trying! Great video
I’m 16 and just started an entrust in acting and I got one of a lead role in our school play and I’m being trained by my teacher and my friends and I’ve had really good feed back from people around me and my teachers and people in the theater buisness so I think I could actually be really good at this, imma major in Psychology and make my money as a psychotherapist and try to weave my way into acting and move into films and Ik some people who our thinking of making films so you know, but imma do a lot of plays in college and acting classes in college
Kurt, thank you always for creating contents that would be valuable epsecially to new actors like myself! I have been pursing the acting seriously for 2+ years, and have been following your channel from the very beginning of my journey, and oh, boy, your contents have helped me tremendously! It looks like I have "completed" all the steps you mentioned in this video 💪At the beginning of last year, I got representation, too. 😀 Currently I am focusing on networking with other actors and industry professionals. I hope to bump into you somewhere one day!
Great video. I'm wanting to start acting but I've never done it before. Unfortunately I live in New Zealand so acting opportunities like being an extra and what not are slim. Also im still trying to figure out how to locate acting work to begin with in my area. I've booked myself in for a 3 day intensive course at a pretty high-profile studio that I've heard a lot of good things about in my city. While there, I'm going to inquire about what else they offer, like frequent classes or some advice to hopefully point me in the right direction with people, places, etc. The biggest drama university in my country is also in my city so that as well is an option for me. Other than that I'm pretty much just planning on going to places like talent agencies, not to get an agent but just in hopes to talk to someone about pointing me in the right direction to get started. Trying to figure out how to get started, finding acting opportunities, and figuring out how it all works seems to be the most difficult part at the moment. I'm really passionate about doing this, though, so I'm really hoping i can get the wheels moving soon
I remember when this channel ´s name was small market actor. I remmeber I thought. hey, yesh that woiuld be the way we should be called since we´re not in hollywood but I very deep inside of me I was feeling sad to be a small market becasue I genuinely think we can aspire and get big paidchecks work as an actors so, thank god the name has changed. besides that, I want to thank you kurt to give ths good advice to all of us.
You can check your local film commission if there is one in your region. For example, when I lived in Ohio, there was an Ohio film commission as well as a Cleveland film commission. Do a google search for your city and state + film commission to see if they have a website. Also do a google search for your city and state + casting director to see if there are casting directors that you can follow on social media. They will sometimes post when there are casting calls in your area.
Hi Kurt, I greatly appreciate all of the generous and helpful content you put out there to help aspiring actors, like myself. I would like to move to Atlanta within the next 2 years to pursue acting for the rest of my life. Could you please make a video (or write a book and I will buy it!) on the profitable side hustles you have pursued that have allowed you to keep pursuing acting full-time? Thank you so much!
Hi,Kurt! I’m loving your videos they re so informative, but I was wondering if you could also make a video for actors who are in the uk/europe? Like to give us a list with acting classes or coaches, that would be super helpful ❤
#1 Take acting classes #2 Be an extra in movies/commercials #3 flexible job with time to put towards side hustle (acting) #4 learn how to audition #5 Do tons of research and watch out for scams #6 Get quality headshots taken #7 Create a demo reel #8 Start self submitting for projects (actors access, casting networks, backstage). Submit headshots, demo reel and request auditions. #9
I would love to take acting classes but i dont have time for them right now bc i am in school and i do breakdance so I cant add anything but i want to but its also that i live in a different country then the country where i want to become an actress
Hi Kurt, I just want to say I watch your videos on everything, and it helps. I am in acting class now and I am doing monologues. I am having a hard time memorizing them and figuring out the emotion for the piece. can you do a video on that to explain it a little bit? Thank you
Mr. Yue, I am cosidering transferring to a location an hour or hour and a half from Atlanta to be closer to acting classes, auditions and etc. My son is almost 14. While I would like for him to come with me, I don't think he would nor would his mom, probably, not let him. He wants to expand as an actor too. My thought was to get a head start so when he is out of high school, I will be better able to help him. The other thought is to not jeopardize our relationship and wait until he has graduated. Do you have any suggestions? Would the Houde school and/or Drama Inc. online be a viable option while I stay in Illinois?
I’ve heard that background acting is not ideal because the directors and those who are in charge of background actor will look at backgrounds actors only as “background actors” and nothing else to the point where, they won’t take them seriously. Background actors faces will be recognize by directors as only “background” which might make someone find difficulty in becoming an actual working actor or as a result of that. I am planning on doing background acting What are your thoughts?
Starting out as BG is a great way to get set experience. Just be present and steal with your eyes. Usually the 2nd AD or BG wrangler will tell you what to do in the scene. Which gives you a small taste of what a AD or Director will do when they give you direction. But if you plan on becoming an actor then I would not recommend doing it for more than a year or two. I started out in 2019 as background and worked my way to student shorts in 2020 & 2021. Ever since 2021 I decided to stop doing BG or Featured Extra bits. Break a leg out there!
I do background acting and I've seen PAs and ADs pull some extras out of the group and they were given speaking roles or just more time on camera. Rare, but definitely possible.
Background actors get upgraded sometimes, so get the experience and submit for BG roles, you just never know. I was BG on a national commercial and was grateful to be on-set; then I got upgraded when the PA and AD's needed someone. Directors always know what they want but sometimes not until they are actually moving BG people around to get the best shot.
Heard from whom? This sounds like some urban legend stuff created by someone who wants to justify why they don't do background acting or think it's beneath them. As a data point, my former roommates, a working actor and a casting director, both suggested that I start out by doing background work for basically the same reasons he lists in the video. You get to see what being on set is like, you get the feel for how the sets are run, you learn how to listen and how to follow instructions, and who knows, you make new friends (other extras, etc) and network a bit for other projects. Don't sweat it and take anything you "hear" with a grain of salt. Get that experience and keep on going!
@@punkangel4118 Thank you for the post I got this info from Wendy Alane Wright (correct me if I’m mistaken) But thats who I got the information from, but I’m glad to see others saying background jobs are good, I’m focusing on trying to get to know how the set works and hopefully get selected from the pool to have a speaking role which I’m understanding is rare “Wendy Alane Wright is CEO and Founder of Hollywood Winners Circle Academy the most advanced online acting business training program in the world”

I appreciate that you have industry-based content that complements acting training nicely.
Thanks for the advise🎬🎥📺🤩💯
Great job Kurt! I agree on all counts! xxx
What I find hurts actors is the latest concept of the "referral".
I've found it's hard to find an agent when you can't simply submit your reels and resume.
Thankfully I work in the Chicago market that doesn't have this mentality. Yet, Atlanta truly has embraced it.
Solid advice. Thank you so much, Kurt! And Happy New Year!
This was so incredibly helpful!! Thank you!!
Love this video! Thank you so much
Thank you for this material!
This is so healthy way and so true! Thank you! Thank you for being honest with us and thank you for everything you share with us 😊
I auditioned for Bass Reeves twice and the 1st role was given to a stunt guy out of L.A. I feel like I'm wasting my time on these auditions. Appreciate your content though thanks Kurt!
That kind of stuff happens all the time. It's the reality of the industry. Not too long ago I went 80+ auditions without a booking. Sometimes you just gotta keep pushing forward.
I hear sometimes it could be the appearance .......you could be good looking but maybe not the look they're looking for ..
Extremely grateful for the time you have taken to share your thoughts and guidance - 💫
Thank you for this advice I’m 24 and I’m going to apply this right away not wasting anymore time
I am watching the resident while watching this and looked up and I SAW YOU! I was in shock, the irony that I was watching your videos because I want to be an actor and I look up and see your face on my tv🤣🤣
You are amazing dude!
Another great video.
Thanks for ur Guidance ❤🎬
Subscribed! Thanks for this! I’m a working voice actor but i was speaking to a talent scout about doing on screen work so this was helpful and insightful for me.
Thanks for sharing 🤝🏾
Great tips, thanks Kurt!
Thank you for this valuable information! It gave me a better idea of where to start from.
Thank you for sharing! It was really helpful!
Am from Nigeria, thank you so much🙏🏿🤗
I've been BG since 2021, since The Last of Us which was shot here in Calgary, AB.
Try local theatre
Take online acting classes
Work on getting a main job and pursue acting as a hobby until you're concinced you want to do it professionally.
It's not necessary to live in a big market when you are first starting out, especially now that there are so many acting classes available online. I spent the first eight years of my acting career in a small market. I lived six hours away from the biggest market in my region. Don't worry so much about location right now. You can definitely get started with online acting classes!
@@ActingCareerCenter Thank you. I will definetly try it
@@jonytep Thanks for the Advice :)
I really want to go on this journey because I’ve been in love with it for as long as I can remember but I have always been so shy so I’m terrified.
I am here mostly because I like your voice hahaha and the great tips of course
Hi KURT i really appreciate the work you do for us.
My passion is to be an international actor.
I love you so much and am from UGANDA 🇺🇬 AFRICA
I always look forward to these videos, Kurt is dropping gems!
This makes sense. Thanks!
I have been blessed to been on some films and I still have no agent or manger! I find it the hardest thing to get! But I will not stop trying! Great video
I'm a lot more determined this year and i feel(know) that im gonna achieve this dream💫
This video REALLY helped thoooo
This guy is good 👍
This is just what I needed! Thank you!! 🙏🏼
As always spot on 👌🏽
Hey Kurt! You've earned my sub! I have a question though, can me, as a 15 year old, be an actor as well, if i am serious about my career?
I hope to see you on set too!
Thank you so much! 😊
Currently I am focusing on networking with other actors and industry professionals. I hope to bump into you somewhere one day!
Congrats on all your successes! Hope to bump into you on set!
I’m watching Will Trent and I just saw you on it 🔥. I’m watching the show now lol
How do I find out what movies and shows will be filming in my area as mentioned on point number 2?
You can check your local film commission if there is one in your region. For example, when I lived in Ohio, there was an Ohio film commission as well as a Cleveland film commission. Do a google search for your city and state + film commission to see if they have a website.
Also do a google search for your city and state + casting director to see if there are casting directors that you can follow on social media. They will sometimes post when there are casting calls in your area.
As always thank you for all the helpful information.
Hi Kurt,
Could you make a short video for people with a full time job looking into breaking into acting specifically in Canada?
Hi, I'm your new subscriber and thank you for this information really useful
Hi,Kurt! I’m loving your videos they re so informative, but I was wondering if you could also make a video for actors who are in the uk/europe? Like to give us a list with acting classes or coaches, that would be super helpful ❤
Nice talk great effort impressive great video I'm glad for your work and tips 🙂 bro nice to hear your experience ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

I would love to take acting classes but i dont have time for them right now bc i am in school and i do breakdance so I cant add anything but i want to but its also that i live in a different country then the country where i want to become an actress
Awesome, love your videos and how you explain =)
HI KURT, HOW DO WE GET STRATEGIC IN TAKING OUR HEADSHOT FOR AUDITION? PLEASE CAN YOU MAKE A VIDEO ON IT?
Hi Kurt, I just want to say I watch your videos on everything, and it helps. I am in acting class now and I am doing monologues. I am having a hard time memorizing them and figuring out the emotion for the piece. can you do a video on that to explain it a little bit? Thank you
Always informative, appreciate you!
Thank you for this video!
I am not zero however it's been a long time. And self taping and zoom service.
I'm a upcoming actor in Jamaica and it's difficult here... There's not much opportunity here in Jamaica for actors/ actress
Great video! Excellent Advice!!!!
Do you have any acting classes you would recommend? Like online.

Thank you so much for your wisdom !
@@punkangel4118 Thank you for the post
I got this info from
Wendy Alane Wright (correct me if I’m mistaken)
But thats who I got the information from, but I’m glad to see others saying background jobs are good, I’m focusing on trying to get to know how the set works and hopefully get selected from the pool to have a speaking role which I’m understanding is rare
“Wendy Alane Wright is CEO and Founder of Hollywood Winners Circle Academy the most advanced online acting business training program in the world”
