HOW TO CLEAN A LEATHER STEERING WHEEL !!

- HOW TO CLEAN A LEATHER STEERING WHEEL! In this video, I show you all the steps to clean and protect your car’s leather steering wheel. Control surfaces such as your steering wheel are constantly subjected to body oils, grease, lotions, dust, dirt, and the sun’s harmful UV rays. Over time, this can lead to cracking, fading and discolouration of your leather surfaces if they are not treated properly.

If your steering wheel’s leather has a glossy or shiny appearance, this means that it is dirty with grease and oils. A clean steering wheel should have a matte appearance.
The first step is to clean the steering wheel with a leather cleaner. Use a leather brush to agitate the cleaner and remove the residue with a microfiber towel.
The second step is to apply a protection which will prevent rapid wear and discolouration from clothing (dye transfer) and also prevent friction damage.
Repeat these steps every 2 or 3 months to maintain your leather properly and it will look good for years!

Can you make a video on how to properly clean headlights (Jeweled eye LED’s for MDX) for car parked outside?
Hey man I got a once in a life time business proposal for you , a car wash business that will blow your mind , how do we talk privately?
Hello sir I am Nitin from India and I am planning to come to Canada can you please tell me from where can I get certified for the ceramic coating course. Thank you
It looks like the products are unavailable in the USA? Do you have another link?
Pan, I'm a newbie who came across your channel & love it because you are, simply relatable. Concerning leather, namely this video but for leather seats too, how can you "seal" leather when it's plastic coated? If you can explain or provide a link that would help.
"Hasn't been cleaned for 1-2 months "
Me: -_-
😂
omg yea hahahahahaha wtf that baby brand new! never done this to my leather steering wheel in 10 years, i used clorox wipes last time haha
After reading my viewers' questions, I decided to ask their questions to Colourlock experts and received the following answers:
1) Is there a wait time after using the leather cleaner before applying leather shield? No. There is no waiting time. Just ensure the surface is dry and all cleaner residue is removed/wiped before applying Shield.
2) How often do we need to reapply Leather Shield? Leather Shield is a sealant. A non permanent sealant that needs to be refreshed once every 3-6 months depending on use. It provides protection from abrasion damage and dye transfer on new leather.
3) Are the products in this video suitable for fake/synthetic leather? Yes, the product is suitable for genuine leather (non absorbent only) & all types of artificial leather/leatherette.
Please tell ColourLock to send product to Amazon. The new car kit is not available. Thank you!!
Thank you, Pan, for this intuitive tutorial. I just cleaned the steering wheel in my BMW F32 and it looks brand-spankin’-new once again! I used the exact same products and tools as in the video and am super excited with the result. No more shiny steering wheel! Thanks again, Pan! Keep up the great work and helpful videos! 👍👍👍
Thanks for the feedback Clint! How did you discover my channel by the way?
@@PanTheOrganizer Hi Pan! I have been a subscriber for about a year so it has been some time. Awesome! Thanks for the feedback! What's your favourite video on my channel so far by the way?
I used to simply use a damp wash cloth every 1-2 weeks, but this is a much better approach. Thanks Pan My Man! 🙏🏼
Yeah you need to deep clean that oil and dirt and germs.

That would be a great little video to create. Maybe one headlight with one series of products and the other with another series of products. AND you can do it inside the garage where it’s toasty warm away from the winter cold outside. 😂😂😂😎
Yes that would make for a great video!

Have using Colourlock system for about 2 years and love it. A tips is that if you using Shield on the leather and you are waiting for it to dry, use a blowdryer :)
Do you also use on the seats?
Simpel procedure to protect the leather! thanks for the demonstration Pan! Great video!
Thanks Jochen! Enjoy your weekend!
Great vid Pan! Love the focused videos on a certain area especially with how the steering wheel or shifter knob is in plain view but gets so neglected by most. It’s a critical item to address. Thx!
Thanks Ryan!
I remember when I cleaned my steering wheel in my BMW for the first time and found out the stitching wasn't actually black it had BMW ///M colored stitching with 12 years of dirt on it...disgusting!
OMG
That's disgusting
Same......
I had this on my old ford that had white stitching on all the seats but black on the wheel & drivers seat. It all came out white after to. Shocking but it was the first clean after I bought it
I can’t stand when people have their car for sale and the leather steering wheel is so shiny. It makes the interior look cheap. It takes one minute to clean.
There you go.
I clean my bmw steering wheel every 2 days to keep as much of the bacteria off
@@Tom-pe4iw Use driving gloves instead. It's much better as the cleaning chemicals.
@Josh S I've done it for 1 year now and the steering wheel still looks brand new I dont use a brush I only use a brush when I detail it on Saturdays I use a microfiber cloth spray some autoglym interior shampoo on the wheel and micro fiber cloth and rub it lightly plus bmw steering wheels a good quality so it won't wear down as much
if you do it correectly it takes 20 minutes.
Ceramic coating for leather? wow! very nice. great idea covering the cluster. That wheel came out great!! the wheel and shift knob definitely get the dirtiest! Thanks for another awesome vid!

@@PanTheOrganizer You're the best buddy! Absolutely love all your stuff. One of the all time greatest detailing experts in the entire world!
Great video as always. We mustn’t forget to clean the back of the steering wheel as well. You’re one of the very few detailers that places a towel behind the wheel and also stresses ph neutral cleaner. Most apcs are caustic to leather. Particularly older leather. It strips the natural oils from the leather.
the back of mine is solid black
Thanks Mark!
Glycerin soft soap which is used for saddles and other leather in stables does the job. Nothing else is needed.
Nice video Pan,always appreciate your videos trying to make a detailers life easier with products etc and still get exceptional results.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Followed your instructions using these recommended products today on my BMW X5 . Thank you Pan, the results are amazing and so easy. Also used on my work VW van leather steering wheel which hasn’t been cleaned properly like this since new. It now looks like new.

I have BMW X5 G05 - 1 year old and I've always used Gyeon Products - great combo on leather seats and very gentle but I was never able to get a good matte result on the steering wheel. I agree! And also knowing it's free of germs! :). Have a great weekend bro!
Pan TheOrganizer how to protect the leather from the grease ? And how to make the leather last longer and in a good shape or as new?
@@abdullahthabet6943 You do exactly as in this video. You can't protect the leather from grease/oils. They accumulate over time because you constantly touch the steering wheel. That's why you have to clean it at least once every 2-3 months.

Hi from the UK. I am a bit of a cynic watching some of the Pan’s and others cleaning wheels.......however.......I bought the kit and looked at the year old shiny F90 M5 steering wheel on my car and gave it a go.....😳 WOW........ I now have a factory Matt steering wheel again, gone is the shiny cheap look these wheels often have. Thanks Pan, great video and the product works which is even better!
Glad to hear that!
My car is locked and this has made me excited about cleaning the wheel. Thank you. Will go to your insta after this
I love inspiring my viewers to take care of their cars!
Hey Pan, for a very old leather steering wheel (40 years old) that are a bit sticky, how would you clean it?
Thanks.
Just my thoughts (I have a 69 corvette) use an apc/leather cleaner but on a microfiber
Always try with the least aggressive method first, like in this video. If that isn't enough, you can try a mild all purpose cleaner and if that still doesn't work, a degreaser with a magic eraser, but don't do this too often as you could damage the leather's coating.
I think one of the things I like best about your videos, Pan, is that no matter what type of vehicle you’re detailing, I can apply that knowledge and any procedures to my own vehicles. Likewise with your garage set up; even though I have a smaller garage, it is very-well organized for detailing. Thanks so much!
Thanks for the positive feedback Douglas!
Just recived and applied the xpress interior cleaner at my steering wheel and it's great. Love that mate finish. Thanks for the advice.
My pleasure!
I was wondering, I accidentally used a clorox wipe on a leather steering wheel & now it looks off (faded black). I am not sure what to do. I thought because of COVID I should clean it but wasnt informed. If there’s anything I could do to save it, it would be helpful! Thank you!
I found that simple green works just as good
Avoid using all purpose cleaners to clean leather on a regular basis. Try to use leather specific cleaners for that task.
Great video as always Pan! Gave me the motivation to do interior cleanings on my cars this weekend but I’ll be using an all purpose cleaner and 303 automotive protectant 👌
I still can’t get my head around ceramic coating for leather. I just picture it giving a hard glass coat but I’m sure it doesn’t. I use the Angelwax Heaven for Leather and Hide-rate. Easy to apply and great clean. Happy new year Pan. 👍
Watch the video where I fully detail my brand new BMW M550i : ruclips.net/video/dsCmJJDP3xo/видео.html
I applied CarPro Leather (ceramic coating for leather) and those contain a flexible formulation that's different from traditional coatings for paintwork. Durability on those is amazing. Up to a year of leather protection.

I have just bought these product to do my steering wheel. Have just bought a 4 year old BMW and the steering wheel is super shiny. Looking forward to a mat finish steering wheel.
Yup, a nice clean matte OEM looking steering wheel. Just the way I like it. :)
@@PanTheOrganizer just used the colour lock product on my steering. WOW!!! It looks brand new again. Great tip and recommendation! Next I will do the seats. Same process?
Hi loved the video. I have a 2022 Mazda 6 Turbo sedan (Australia) The grey leather steering wheel has been slippery and shiny since i picked up the car brand new. Do they apply a protective coating at the factory prior to shipping from Hiroshima Japan to Australia? If so how can I make the wheel soft and grippy? As the slippery wheel for me is annoying. Graham
Thanks for the video! I do take good care of my steering wheel and I was able to use the products in this video recently. One observation I want to make is to avoid working on direct sunlight and extreme hot weather when applying leather shield, it dries out and leaves streaks. I was able to use a light damp microfiber to remove the streaks and bring the matte finish.
Thanks for watching Jose!
What about if I have a car from the 90s? Steering wheel isn’t in mint condition but still very good condition? That brush still ok?
Thanks for showing us how to do it right! There are several other videos suggesting the use of a magic eraser, which is only going to damage the leather. These is no substitution for having the proper 'tools', in this case, a cleaner designed for steering wheels
Thanks Dayne! Magic erasers can be used in extreme conditions, when no other solution works, but you need to be very careful and test on an inconspicuous area first. But in general, I always recommend starting with the most gentle methods first, and use material appropriate products, like leather cleaners and sealants on leather surfaces. :)
I used the p&s on a 5 month old BMW it's crazy how dirty it can get! I only don't know which protectant I should use for it I used carpro perl on all the interior but in my opinion it's to slick for the steering wheel. so I think I'll get the colourlock set! Thanks Pan for your amazing videos I learn a lot from it to keep my car and from others in good condition!
Thanks for the kind words! How did you discover my channel by the way?
@@PanTheOrganizer I think one of your video’s was recommended when I searched for a wax!
If you cant get a matte look, even after several passes, try colourlock leather spirits - designed to fully strip the leather from all oils and flash away without residue. Great especially on wheels not cleaned in years.
Good point!
Thanks so much for sharing. You are literally the best. So what you used is nowhere near like leather cleaners you find at stores -correct? Cause it seems like store brands just make the leather more shiny, that's why I never used them in the past. I'm glad to see there are products that actually work as they should cause I just got a new 23 Tacoma TRD 4x4 Off-Road and thanks to you will be able to keep the steering wheel looking new! Thanks again!
Correct. These are professional grade leather cleaners and protectants. A clean leather is a matte leather. There isn't supposed to be a glossy or oily looking surface.

@@PanTheOrganizer I found your channel around a year and half ago. I'm pretty sure at the time I was trying to find out what products to use to clay bar a vehicle, either that or what polishes to get and how to do it. I did end up trying to clay bar my Camaro, but the paint on them sucks so it ended up scratching the crap out of it. Luckily I just did one panel.
Hi, great tutorial for a beginner. How do you clean the Colourlock brush? Want to use it on the seats, also, can you use it on the plastic bits of the door panel, or is it better to just spray the cleaner and wipe off with a microfiber towel? Thanks.
Cleaning the brush is simple, just rinse it in warm water and let it air dry. If you get some super disgusting leather cleaning, you can spray a bit of APC on the brush, work it in, then rinse with warm water.
Love colourlock. If the steering wheel is really bad, after using the cleaner, try their leather cleaning spirit before adding the protection.

I really like this! The glossy sheen to the steering wheel of my 2015 GTI bothers me.
I usually brush clean with hand wah foam, rinse & let it dry for 3+ hrs., then wipe on the shoe polish paste, brush & shine the wheel as your shoes.
I just use dawn dishwashing liquid in my water, clean it, let dry and use mink oil , if the car is going to sit a few days l use olive oil in the morning wipe off at night and wipe with fiber rag.
Tried this a few times and it got rid of the grease from the steering wheel no issues but noticed it has started to take the colour away. Have not applied hardly any pressure either so quite upset it has ruined my steering

A Magic Eraser is my weapon of choice for the steering wheel deep clean. The amount of crud it removes is unbelievable, even after using a degreaser etc. Brought a 10 year old disgusting steering wheel back to looking new again.
Luke Wilson ditto. it’s what i use on my cars too!
Be very careful when using magic erasers and APCs or degreasers on leather surfaces. Magic erasers are abrasives and if used to hard or too often can damage the protective coating that's on the leather. APCs and degreasers are often too alkaline (high pH) and can change the leather's pH which can harm it long term. For regular maintenance, the lowest aggression should be used: the techniques shown in this video.
Pan TheOrganizer Very good to know. How does Colourlock Shield compare to something like Beasley’s Leather Lock?
@@PanTheOrganizerOh yeah, of course. I'd only use the Magic Eraser on heavily soiled steering wheels and certainly not for routine maintenance. It works so well to cut through years worth of gunk from hands. Like any abrasive, it should only be used if absolutely necessary. Cheers, Pan!
Could you tell us what product to use to maintain daily sanitizing on the wheel?
Do these products work on an already faded steering wheel or should I buy some other product to help restore the leather look?
Nice , thanks for the info pan ! gonna order me some colourlock products to try it out. But i have white stitching on my steering wheel, what is the best way to clean that ? it's getting a bit grey. But i don't want do damage the leather of the steering wheel.. Keep up the good work !
The same way as in this video. I proceed with the same techniques on the red and blue stitching on BMW M cars.
I recently bought the one for smooth leather since my car is a bit older but now that I’ve used it and the leather is looking good do I start using the other one or continue to use the smooth leather one?
Stick with what you have. New leather kit is for new cars, less than 3 years old.
@@PanTheOrganizer Thanks.
Hi there - I am driving a new Tesla and wanted to use the Colourlock products to maintain the matte look. But one thing I dislike, that you didn't mention, is the odor of the product. Sometimes a product overpowers a new car smell and I am sensitive to scents. Is this product scented?
I don't really pay attention to chemical smells anymore (except when it smells amazing) as after 25 years of detailing, I have become nose blind to those things, unless they smell crazy bad like iron removers (rotten egg smell). I don't remember the Colourlock smelling bad though... Each person is sensitive to different things.
Also, if you have a Tesla, you probably have vegan leather in it. Watch what I used for vegan leather in my Tesla Model Y detailing video here: ruclips.net/video/gohks8xP5NY/видео.html
The reason the Colourlock brush is ideal is because the bristles are synthetic and don't heat up the surface like a brush made of hair would.
Thanks for the fine video. I woult like to se a video about cleaning/maintain alkantara steringwheel.
Thanks Ole! How did you discover my channel?
@@PanTheOrganizer In 2019 i bought my dreamcar at that time. About the same time as i discovered your channel - All i know about detailing cars ive lurned from you. I am a true weekend-warrior when it comes to carditailing.
At the moment im waiting to get my brand new Mercedes CLA45s. But i wounder if i shut get the stearingwheel in full leather, half leather/alkantara or full alkantara. And i coult not find any video in your arsenal😊
Good to know! Thanks! Well you discovered one of the biggest car detailing channels on RUclips, as we're about to surpass 750,000 subscribers and 100 million views. I have been detailing for 25 years and I love sharing my passion and knowledge with my viewers.

we are currently experiencing ash fall here in the philippines because of the eruption of taal volcano... can you give tips on how to clean volcanic ashfall on cars?
Pan last year I bought a 2018 brand new Mercedes , which leather cleaner set should I get? My card 3 years old now but I bought it brand new last year if you could help , thanks my man
@japanwatchconnection stfu dumb ass no I didn’t
Great video! I always assumed that shiny glossy look to my steering wheel was natural. I have a 7-year-old VW GTI and the steering wheel has a very shiny appearance to it. Do you think I can use the leather cleaner by Meguiar's to achieve this? I also ordered the leather brush you suggested. I'm really tempted to clean my steering wheel and achieve that matte look once again!
Great video Pan thank you. Question on the brush any particular way to clean it when you are done?
I simply rinse the brush in warm water and let it dry.
Same goes for cover that have pin holes? Like Grand Prix GXP. Ty
What about the Mr. Clean Magic sponge thingy ? Because my steering wheel is so shiny it's like a mirror. It hasnt been properly cleaned in like 10 years or so.
Only use magic erasers in extreme cases as those are abrasives that could potentially harm the leather’s coating. Start with a strong dedicated leather cleaner like in this video with the techniques shown and see how that works. Always the least aggressive methods first.
Fantastic video! Thanks, Pan!
My pleasure! Thanks for the feedback. :)
What color is your Macan?
@@PanTheOrganizer My Macan has a white exterior with a Luxor beige / black interior. The steering wheel, dash, upper door panels, and carpet are black. The seats are Luxor beige leather. Thanks for replying to my questions!
Nice
Thanks Mike!
Great video Pan! I do wonder, since not all leathers are the same (some cars have artificial, some PU, some Suede etc.), how do I get to know what type of leather my vehicle has? I see on the website of Colourlock that the Strong Leather Cleaner can not be used on every type of leather. Thanks in advance!
Hey Pan, I'm hoping you can answer a few questions for me. For a care that's hasn't been detailed for example decontamination, polish, sealant, etc how often would you do a full detail like that? I think you said twice a year correct me if I'm wrong. And what do you consider to be a maintenance wash and what does it consist of. After a simple wash my car catches some dust/pollen would I do a simple quick detailer? I live in Nevada were pollen is not so nice to our clean cars
Pan, I just purchased a 2016 BMW 535i MSport. The interior and leather surfaces are immaculate but just want to clean it all up. The p&s interior cleaner and the detail factory brushes will do the job. I was thinking about getting the WOWO interior finisher over the p&s cleaner. Do you recommend that? Awesome videos man. I have been here since the beginning and love all the information you put out on your channel.
I just bought the mild one without actually looking properly.. -.- will this stil work??
Yes
Hello..anything to make it not slippery after it's been cleaned?
It shouldn’t feel slippery once properly cleaned, as clean leather has a matte appearance like when you take delivery from the dealership. That’s not slippery.
hi mate!! what about the very shiny steering wheel, posable never cleaned??? this chemical works on it???
Yes. Sometimes on very dirty steering wheels get the strong cleaner and do more passes.
Excellent!
Thanks Alex!
Hey Pan great vid. How do I replace the clear coat (Mitsubishi L200). It has rubbed off in places due to some wear and tear. Mostly abrasive sand from a camping trip.
Great video Pan!
What do you think about maintain leather in car with vaseline?
I read it on some forums, but I m not sure abot that.
All best from Serbia!
It wouldn't do much, as modern leather is coated and the vaseline won't penetrate very far. What you want to do is clean and protect that top coat.
@@PanTheOrganizer Thank you very much 😊
Hey Pan can you show us how to clean Alcántara steering wheel. Please
Here: ruclips.net/video/pvKJXGRneJg/видео.html
Hey pan! You say to complete this procedure every two to three months. I’m between that what should we use while doing more of a maintenance interior clean?
Pan, Most Mercedes Benz do not have leather on their seats etc. they have MB Tex. Is this product appropriate for it ? or should I be using some other cleaner and protectant ? Thank you.
Yes they work on all types of artificial leather/leatherette as well.
Thanks for an informative and interesting video from your subscriber in England. 👍 😁
Thanks Andrew! Happy new year from Canada!
Colorlock Strong cleaner is PH8 ;) Just so that You know. Mild cleaner is PH5
Should I use the strong cleaner or mild cleaner for a very shiny steering wheel?
Thanks for another helpful video
Thanks Charlie!
