How To Make A Modern Cubby Storage Unit | Woodworking

- In this video I make a cube storage unit for my lounge. It's the second piece in a set, to match the tv cabinet I made a few months back. It uses plywood panels for the main body and finger jointed timber panels for the drawer box fronts. The draw boxes are made to be removed.

This is beautiful! I like it much better than other cube shelves.
Another great build. Really nice to have a couple of pieces that go together!
Thanks! Absolutely
What a great build to complete my RLM binge on. That's it, both channels watched up to date and loved it all. It's been very interesting to see how you and the channels grew and changed over the past few years, starting DIY, going artsy, and finally coming full circle (with more refinement and skill) ...and all without a table saw ;) Great stuff mate, keep it up and on to 100k one day. Way to represent Aussie makers.
Thanks man, really appreciate that!
I really liked the idea of removing the screws after the glue up, and then changing them out for dowels.
Thanks!
Oh my god, that tip with the Craftsman clamps, brilliant! Honestly that's the best tip I've seen in quite some time
Awesome!
Thanks Robert. Looking forward to the next one.
Very nice.
Thanks!
Lovely job Robin! What a great unit! Love the out feed table, also magic video edit. Superb all round!
Thanks Scott!
I like the contrast between the white and the wood grain. Makes for a nice look. But I agree, child will be at the wifi router before you know it so that drawer need something!
Thanks Art. For the minute she can’t pull them out, but the day is coming!
Nice one!
Thank you!
well built!!!
Removable bins are the absolute way to go for toy storage. One suggestion would be to add hand holds into the sides of the bins. When our daughter was a toddler, we discovered that handles made a big difference for her ability to manage bins with two hands. The easier she could shift them, the more likely she was to put the bins back.
I was toying with the idea but wasn’t sure if it’d actually be practical. Thanks for the answer!
Really cool, I liked the included reasoning for tools and techniques
Thanks
Very impressive!
So simple but yet so elegant & functional. This would be a great starter project for some one with beginner skills. Hoping all is well, Dirty Jersey out!!
Awesome work Robin! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
Thanks Fred
Adding felt to the sides of the drawers (or drawer openings) would help with them binding when you are putting them in and out. It would act almost like runners and keep from scratching up the paint.
I'm subscribing just based off of that inter editing tip about the poly yellowing. It made me chuckle. Great video.
Haha, awesome! Thank you
Enjoyed!!!
Thank you!
Great build!
Thanks!
Beautiful...
Thank you
Great project Robin, and I love your outfeed table,. I need to get one like it because sometimes I drop the off cut that is the piece I need and it gets damaged.
Haha thanks!
Brilliant Rob 😍
Eish! Such skills 😜
Ay! Thanks Jaclyn! Hope you’re well
I just love and enjoy your work man it's awesome.
Thanks
@@RobinLewisMakes you're Great.
Man I've got to get myself one of those out-feed tables! I didn't realise they come in blue straight from the shop!
😂
Like how you used the band-saw to trim up the box . . . have to get me a band-saw . . . Cheers.
Thanks Rod
Good to see another Aussie making videos ! Love your work mate. SA accent aswell ;)
Haha thanks mate
Great job man! Subscribed.
Thanks!
5:12 - that's clever!
I use that technique whenever I can either hide it or "make it a feature". Very useful when your clamps don’t reach.
But do remember: glue WILL stick to the screw. So remove it before it sets up completely. If you wait too long you will break the screw at the point where the stem turns into the spiral. Easy to hide with a shorter dowel, but the broken part is in there forever.
Might be inconvenient if you do this when you are making your workbench top... and than need to drill a dog hole in that exact spot. Don't ask me how I know this. :-(
But removing it too early may be a problem if you are forcing bent wood into shape.
A thicker screw gives you a little more time before you need to remove it, since it is stronger.
I would recommend 6 mm screws for this. 4 mm is not enough.
You had me at "Queenslander".
😂
Great job Robin. How's that Full Boar drill stand going? Thinking of buying one. Going to copy this project and put my lathe on top. Bucket loads of storage below. Love it 👍
Thanks John. So far so good, but it’s the only drill press I’ve used so take it with a grain. For what I do it hasn’t let me down
I'll take three.
Hey Robin,
Brilliant work as always!
Just a quick question. Have you considered using a paint sprayer? In some cases it can give a more even coating of paint and can be easier to use.
Anyhow, looking forward to the next video!!!
Thanks man! It's funny you ask, I seriously debated it on this one. I've got one of those airless sprayers, and I keep wanting to try it, but I've become so used to a roller now that it's hard to break the habit
I have tried with a airless sprayers and I find small, confined areas like the inside of the cabinet ends up being a pain - on the outside, the job is done in no time - and even.
Creative, how much did you waste on all material
For the router box you should make a dummy box, I know that my kid will pull the box out at least once
I’m planning something along those lines
Why use so many screws and dowels? Shouldn’t the glue be enough to hold?
The glue is enough but I was using the screws as a way of clamping, while the glue dries
very slick Rob, please don't take two-man lifts foregranted though, I wrecked my shoulder a little over a year ago lifting something not all that heavy, I am still basically a socially acceptable junky going through physio and probably going to end up undergoing surgery. I know it seems unmanly asking for help but....... I didn't and my life hasn't been the same since.
Wow, surgery?! That’s intense! To be fair it wasn’t actually that heavy but you’re absolutely right
@@RobinLewisMakes yeah, I get you, the keter box I picked up that dislocated was sub 40kgs it was more the awkward shape (long) that stuffed me. Trust me we are not getting younger.
Так не делают!
Put some shit on your walls. Echo echo echo
