1. Women can be affected as severely as men. Since women have two X chromosomes (XX), they can have different combinations of G6PD gene variants, resulting in various degrees of enzyme activity and potential effects on their health.2. Because of this and more, one test showing a normal level of G6PD does not exclude the dignosis. 3. Testing requires G6Pd level test (not spot test), Heinz, reticulate count, slide to look for 'bite' marks, urine test to look for hemoglobin. 3. Chronic hemolysis associated with G6PD deficiency can lead to the release of hemoglobin and heme into the bloodstream. These substances can be filtered by the kidneys and may cause direct tubular injury, inflammation, and oxidative damage within the renal parenchyma, contributing to kidney dysfunction over time. 4. Common symptoms come from the acute impact on the kidneys and the acute lact of oxygen to the body. Sleepiness, body aches, frequent urnination, vision problems, vomiting, headache, and more. 5. It's hemolytic anemia-the damaged red cells are taken out of circulation by the bone marrow, spleen, and liver. 6. Fava beana are in falafels. 6. Common drugs like benadryl, ibuprofen, tylenol are triggers 7. You may not be anemic if your bone marrow is working like a champ, but the retic count would be elevated. 8. Can result in elevated bilirubin in children versus severe anemia. Bottomline, it is the most common enzeme deficeincy in the world, is underdiagnosed, and there's a huge knowledge gap in caring for women.
I was told that people with G6PD Deficiency SHOULD NOT and CAN'T give blood donations. I was told that yhe blood donation IS NOT stable for donating. Have you heard about that?
Yes even if you have good Hemoglobin levels the idea that it will be given to someone with bad health probably that they use medication on him and since G6pd has allot of no no meds they can’t take the risk ,if you want to donate try to donate PLT since allot of CA patient needs it and most people don’t like being on the device for one hour and it really saves lives because the chemotherapy and also in case of bleeding
Hello Doctor! I am a 56 year old Afro Am with SCD trait and G6PD deficiency! I ave just been diagnosed with lymphocytic thyroiditis anti-TPO = 471.3 TSH is < 0.01. What does it all mean? Mom had Sickle Cell and COOLEY’S Anemia. She succumbed to liver failure brought on by Hepatic Infarction. She was 14 months shy of her 80 birthday in March of last year!
So sorry for your loss. My son is 42 years old and has the variant for G6PD and is showing consistent symptoms. I found out that I was a carrier of the variant through the 23&Me Health and DNA analysis. Knowing this explains a lot of things that is happening with my son. Unfortunately for us, the doctors are clueless here in NYC...they think the answer is to mask the symptoms with prescription drugs rather than what I found out that G6PD is triggered by certain foods and they refuse to acknowledge that at all. The doctors are useless. All the know about is writing a prescription... SMH 😔
Can different things that should be avoided have different effects later on in life? I found out I had it at 18 when I joined the army and haven’t avoided anything but I’m now 35 and have been getting a lot of the symptoms.
Same with me, except it was the Air Force who told me. Explains why vodka tonics wiped me out (tonic is a no go). It got worse as I aged and why I am searching the internet to learn more. A food log and symptom list can be very helpful to learn what bothers you.
Can NMN supplement help people with G6PD increase their levels of NAD (NADPH). Also, what are the effects of aging and NAD levels on people with G6PD deficiency? NAD decreases as we age, so does taking NMN help increase levels of NAD even in people with G6PD? Any feedback would be great. Thank you
I'm trying to find the same answer, if you figure it out would you let me know? From what I understand, G6PD is needed to produce NADPH, and in the red blood cell this is via the pentose phosphate pathway, the first step being controlled by G6PD. So the question is if taking NMN would actually make any diference? But on the other hand, NMN, which is a NAD precursor, increases red blood cell count. I can't seem to find any research into NAD precursors and G6PD.
I have a severe g6pd deficiency and I consume blueberries and soy on daily basis, red wine and tonic water from time to time, I never felt anything wrong and didn't see anything unexpected in blood tests, and the medical doctors I have spoke with never mentioned it, please share your references to these claims
My 6 year old daughter has G6PD, last month she developed a bald spot on her head, do you have any information on whether G6PD is related or can cause hair loss? I would really appreciate if you could share any information with me! Please and thank you so much.
Low Zn may cause hair loss. Gluten may hurt the gut lining so less minerals/nutrients absorb. Hair test to see good minerals/heavy metals may help. Many people recently are low in Zn/Mg and gluten issues are worse.

Yes I’ve heard the same thing, I believe it breaks down and doesn’t stay good as long.

I'm starting to see Fava beans in groceries stores now. They're in vegan snacks and some gluten free products.
Any time I have Fava beans I'm dead tired for 3-4 days

Likewise….
I’m on NMN NR NAD TMG GLYCINE…..
Hoping that will help.
My Methaline Blue is a life saver

I’m soooo concerned
I believe there are different levels to this. Mine is much more severe.

ممكن يكون عندها نقص حمض الفوليك او الحديد

Does this test for Stiff Person Syndrome?
Stiff due to low Mg?
