    @4:26. I just have to comment for those people watching this video what I have been doing to develop my inventory. I haven’t started on eBay yet, but I have quite a list of items I already have to put on there. I developed this list by watching RUclips videos people make while they go to garage sales and thrift stores and flea markets. One in particular is Bargain Barons. By watching these, i realized “I have that”or “I have those” or “I have something like that” . Sometimes it clued me to think of other things I have. Let me tell you, I have a huge list. Hope that helps some people.

    This video has never rung so true, and I am living proof myself. I was a single mother of three kids who are grown now but I desperately wanted to be home raising my kids. So, 28 years ago I started this thing called eBay and I mean I started full force. I was desperate to be home being the mom raising my kids. I started selling things around the house and in no time, I went to auctions and sales and built an inventory. I full fledge gave it my all and never looked back. We had a beautiful home and lots of love. I had that DRIVE and a deep passion for reselling and 28 years later that passion and drive has only grown! Best thing I ever did. I can't imagine doing anything else. If you put time, effort and drive into it the sky is the limit. I love my job and over the years have run six different stores. This store is my newest endeavor and I'm working on just this one and loving it. He is right you MUST have the drive to succeed. Also, without self-discipline success won't happen. Period. I have always treated it like I would have any other job with the exception I'm my own boss!! Who wouldn't love that??

Thank you for being a true mentor to those new (and not so new ) to the reselling world.

    Great video, Scot. I would add where there's a will. There's a way. I started on eBay 4 years ago with a prepaid phone, no printer, no scale, no home internet, and an old laptop. I used the library for internet & printing & pre-weighed my items on the post office scale before listing. When necessary, I wrote out the label the good old-fashioned way, especially for media items, as the price is the same for the label. I got free boxes from a retail store & purchased bubble mailers as needed from the dollar tree. My prepaid phone took terrible pictures, so I used a family members phone and emailed the pictures to myself. Fast forward, I upgraded to a better camera phone with unlimited data & purchased a scale. Still no printer, I use the QR codes. Still no home internet, I use the App mainly & my phone as a hotspot for that old laptop. I currently do this part-time so if I get to the point where sales supported upgrading to some fancier gadgets, I'll take the plunge. The point is you can do this with very little. It may be inconvenient, but it can be done.

      That's exactly right. You could give someone who has no will all the best tools in the world, and they will fail. Enough will, and they will either find a way...or make one.

    I heard Rita Davenport say “If you want a helping hand, look no further than the end of your arm”! I wanted a way out of healthcare and a way to spend more time with my retired husband and my family. Reselling has provided that. I started flipping furniture, selling at outside antique markets, then started online. It does take work. There is a learning curve, but if you take the time to do it right, you’ll be successful! I can’t wait until you do your own lives! I will be watching and learning more!

      Early on I used to rely exclusively on the QR code for shipping. Walk into the post office, wait in line for 30 minutes, get the QR code scanned, and a label is printed. Wasting 30+ mins at the post office every day became too much of a hassle and I hated it, so I decided to bite the bullet and buy a laser printer to print my own labels. Eventually, I will buy a Rolo printer too when my daily sales increase to a point that justifies the price. For now, the QR code is a good fallback option if my printer decides to quit on me or if I run out of labels.

    GM, Scot! Thanks for this latest installment in your series.
    I have the same attitude about sharing w/ “the curious” how fantastic it is, that, in 2023 this grassroots/ throwback style online business opportunity is even still available!! That, it is so darned easy (relatively speaking) when compared to the “old” way of flipping stuff used to be for us newspaper ads, hard line phones, fax machine messages, etc…)
    Yes, we are truly blessed to have this GOLDEN opportunity available to us! And for us full-timers, no doubt, there’s still plenty of “meat on the bone” for everyone to partake of! Example - when I’m out sourcing and I see, in person, my fellow reseller find something I hadn’t seen yet and it’s now in his/ her basket, or shows me on their phone a picture of some “treasure” they recently found, what, I’m mad? Jealous?? NO! I’m truly happy for them… I congratulate and encourage them!
    Keep up the altruism my friend. You’re helping change lives … for the better!!

    What is your opinion on dropshipping on eBay,I have seen where people do this and it seems great but I am a person of reality and not sure about it.Going out finding bargains is fun and adventurous and my wife is starting to see what can be had with the right find so she is accepting my “drive” to find things. I have only had 3 sales the past few months but I believe it is about selling what people are looking for and obviously some of my items are not that much in demand so I keep trying.What is not good is having a phone with lousy connectivity inside some stores :)

    My drive is completely gone right now. It took everything I had to list 4 items yesterday. Reason, I have been sick for the past 2 months. I starting getting better and then it rebounds. I have been off work for the past 3 days, going to see if I can work today. I get home and go straight to bed. The only things I have tried to do is unlist and relist items already in my store. Sales are not that great, one here and there. Hopefully, I can get over this stuff and get my store going again.

    I have a few question how much inventory should you have/ need at a time? How long does it take overall for a business to take off? I’m just recently starting reselling for almost a month now. I have a lot of drive and really passionate want my business to take off. Only sold 4 items so far having a bit of a struggle figuring out what I can do to make it so I have sales every day. And in order for me to have sales every day does that mean I need to have a big inventory? If you could help me out that be great ! Love your video I have been learning alot!

    • @TheChaChingKing
      @TheChaChingKing  Год назад +3

      Hello Jenna! Yours is a very common question and my answer is probably going to feel frustrating. The answer is, "It depends." If you were listing some item that everybody was looking for and you have the only one, it will sell very quickly if priced right. It wouldn't matter how many other items you have listed. So, if you are listing really desirable items at a great price, you don't need a big inventory at all.
      If it matters, we started making daily sales when we were active in the store everyday and had somewhere around 300-400 items listed.

      If it qualifies for media mail, use it. It does have tracking if you buy the label through eBay and it isn't cost efficient to insure something relatively inexpensive. Even if you occasionally sold an extra CD or DVD shipping Priority, it would never offset the cost of shipping every CD or DVD with that service. You could always make it an optionally shipping service if the buyer wanted it and was willing to pay for it.

      @NathanGrant75 Год назад +1

      Also, if you sell on eBay, what are you doing come tax time when the IRS wants you to state how much you paid for that old item you sold that had been sitting in the closet for years. I think I read somewhere an average eBay selling price was ok????

    • @TheChaChingKing
      @TheChaChingKing  Год назад +1

      I'm probably in the minority in that I don't think the fees are outrageous at all. My wife's parents owned a small family business for 40 years. The costs associated with running that brick-and-mortar store were significantly higher. Even with shipping, I net a far higher percentage than they did. The fees typically run around 13% for me. And, because my average sale price has historically been $40 or higher (typically $60-80 the last 3 years), the shipping costs represent a smaller percentage of my overall item proceeds. I may do a video on this in the future, but I think the costs are a bargain when you consider how many eyes eBay puts on my items.

I can at least feel like I'm not being sucker punched with my shirt pulled over my head. I understand that people were taking advantage of the shipping charges, but that can be monitored. They know from other people selling items what most items cost to ship. They are certainly leaving the door open for another platform to step in. Please note that if you sell more than 600 dollars on eBay in a year, they will report your income to the IRS and issue you a 1099-K.

      Absolutely. We have always reported our income. Once we were selling things for a profit, we reported the profit.

    Do you have a business license to sell on ebay

      You do not have to have a business license to sell on eBay. That said, I do have a tax ID in Texas for a business. When Melody and I decided this was going to be a business, we treated it like a business.

      There are a lot of factors. I tried Mercari and just had no luck at all. I'm sure the items make a big difference. For me, if I'm consistent on eBay, I do well.

    I have been doing ebay for 30 years and IMO and others its getting more and more difficult because ebay keeps changing the rules of selling. The largest number of scammers are located in china. They set up warehouse's all over America however they are actually in China which is were the item comes from. The scammers use this technique to scam You and ebay looks the other way because they make big money from china ebayers. The feedback rating system favors the buyers and not the sellers. Also the more expensive Your item the more likely You are to run into scammers. They buy an item from You and You ship it. Once the get the item they automatically put in for a refund saying item is not as described and ebay will give them back their payment and the majority of the time You do not get Your item back. their are more scammers now than every before. Ebay was built on the little guy however over the years major million dollar companies use their service and they seem to favor the big sellers. Also years ago they allowed all kind of payments now its restricted and also its rigged so all taxes have to be automatically taken out depending on what state You live. If You are a patient person You can make some money however the profit margin has decreased due all the high fees of listing and final value fees etc. Make up Your own mind.

      I hear you. I just rarely deal with any scammers at all. My return rate is very low overall and the majority of those are just returns for fit or some other benign reason. I've never been forced to give a refund before I got the item back. I also recognize that not everyone's experience is the same. The sales tax being collected is a Godsend for me. I no longer have to worry about any of the online sales. It's collected and paid for me. I only have to report the sales tax on items I sell locally (which I don't do).
      All of that said, I don't keep all of my eggs in one basket. We cross post to Poshmark and Etsy. I'd never give a company complete control over my financial well-being. If I ever get to the point that I am no longer optimistic about my eBay business, we will transition it to another platform. I'm just not there.
