Now that's what I call a performance! Though Cat Stevens wrote it and did his own version along with Rod the Mod and countless others, for me, its P. P. Arnold who will always own this song.

Saw Pat Arnold supporting Southside and the Jukes at Shepherd's Bush on 4/7/24 and she was fantastic. Rolled back the years and her version of "The First Cut" is sublime. At 77 she can still belt out the tunes - a soul survivor indeed!

For those who don't know, she was one of the backing singers for Ike & Tina Turner duo. They were called the Ikettes. PP Arnold's version of this song along with 'Angel of the morning' were her two hits in the UK. I still have the vinyl copy of her album 'Kafunta' which was also critically well appreciated.

It is a fantastic song from the great Cat Stevens , who sold it for peanuts to PP Arnold. To me , the most beautiful and intense version is by him .

Actually, according to Cat/Yusef himself...it was intended for Otis Redding...but his producer Mike Hurst gave it to PPArnold
