Just the right amount of humor, clarity and content. I am a newbie turner and just getting to the point of creating things worth applying finish to.

Thanks for the information. Need to buy a few gallons of denatured alcohol sooner rather than later :)

    Great video. Couple of thoughts:
    - You can buy pure mineral oil at either Walmart or your local drug store very inexpensively compared to the “butcher block oil” sold at the big box stores. It does not have any additives and works just fine as a cutting board or cooking utensils finish. The vitamin E additive in the commercial products is just added as a preservative. You can also mix beeswax and mineral oil (double boiler, please) for a nice food safe finish.
    - Be careful with denatured alcohol. It is ethanol (think vodka) mixed with methanol (very poisonous). It can be absorbed through skin. The stuff from the big box store has a higher concentration of methanol, so wear gloves. Organic variety has a lower concentration of methanol, if you can find it. But I’d still use the gloves.

Thanks for watching, James! Agreed on the mineral oil - that's a good tip. And good point on the denatured alcohol, as well - love when I learn something new in the comments. Thanks for sharing!

For some reason the nice saver bags I use for Waterlox say they can’t be used for my lovely, short-shelf-life can of shellac. The bags work well and keep out air so they’d seem to be perfect for storage but I’ve been taking their word for it. Another way to keep air away from shellac could be a trick I learned to preserve perfume. As you use the product, drop glass beads (or maybe marbles for shellac?) into the container to raise the liquid to the edge. Lastly, I have a storage container made specially for keeping guacamole from going brown - the lid can be pushed down as far as needed to keep air from touching the surface. I think I could come up with something to slide down inside a wood finish container - or maybe sacrifice my guac and use the one I have…🤔

Thanks for watching! That marbles idea is awesome, but I think you're really on to something with the guacamole saver. Maybe a plastic ring with a silicone flange? You push it down on top of the finish, then seal a hole on the top?

@@qbranchwoodworks something like that, yes. Or a stiff but flexible rubber or plastic lid that fits snugly against the inside diameter with a knob on top to pull it back out. We’d save a fortune in finishes and paint. Let’s design something. What shall we call it?

Great video informative and light hearted . Can you use raw linseed oil instead in the shine juice, here in Aus we use metho or white spirit.

Thank you, and thanks for watching! You certainly CAN use raw linseed oil, but I've heard that it can take over a month to fully dry. Boiled linseed oil cures much quicker. That said, things sold as "boiled linseed oil" often contain drying agents and other chemicals, so I'd read the labels carefully either way.
