If cared for properly, they often live for ~14-16 years, sometimes exceeding 20. The issue is that there are several hereditary factors at play which don’t necessarily evidence themselves at birth. The most common example of this is the issue of misaligned/overgrown teeth.
Chinchillas, like all rodents, have teeth that continue to grow throughout their lifetime, and the need to gnaw on both food, and other tougher surfaces like hard wood, stone, metal, etc. in order to keep their teeth “short”, the way us humans have to upkeep facial/scalp hair, or else it becomes overgrown, matted, and unhealthy.
The catch 22 here is that in order for a chin to be able to gnaw properly and “keep up” with its tooth growth, it needs to be constantly grazing/nibbling on practically everything in its environment (if you’ve ever owned chinchillas, you’ve definitely know this habit 😉). Never scold a chinchilla for chewing on something, even if it is dangerous. Instead distract them and provide them with a more flavorful, natural, & generally more inviting object to play with/chew on.
Chinchillas are not stupid (they are smarter than rabbits, and close to cats/dogs in lifespan & intelligence, it’s just often times not exhibited in the same way, as they don’t have as long of a genetic history of being “domesticated”) & given the choice, they will always chew on natural/more suitable objects a like pumice stones or applewood sticks, vs. your baseboards and stray wires.
The biggest issue is that by the time dental overgrowth has occurred to the point where you’d be noticing it, aka drooling, reluctance to eat, loss of weight, etc. (as Kamryn said, they are good at “hiding” their illnesses, even from their owners, as an evolutionary trait) the chinchilla’s teeth are usually too long for it to eat/gnaw properly, and may even be causing it pain, in which case they need to be taken immediately to an exotic animal vet, sedated, and have their front incisors “ground down” by sandpaper or some equally abrasive surface by the veterinarian.
Good news is the short-term prognosis is excellent, barring any secondary infections/oral issues, it should wake up and immediately regain its appetite/normal propensity to gnaw, and this behavior should be promoted as much as possible with toys, so as to avoid further incidents.
Unfortunately, some chins just have bad genetics due to poor breeding or just bad luck (those that are white, black, violet, etc. suffer from more genetic conditions than those that are natural “grey”, as they are likely less interbred & are more common) and in some cases the dental issue will arise again and again (generally every 2.5-4 months). At this point you’ve got to evaluate its age, your finances, and the feasibility of repeatedly having your chin’s teeth ground down by the veterinarian. In many cases, a young chin (2-4 years old) that shows this problem is usually recommended to be put to sleep, as it will inevitably suffer again and again it’s entire lifespan from this problem.
In contrast, older chins (~5-6+) that have this issue may have simply run out of fodder to gnaw on, or may only need medical intervention every few years, in which case the expense and the trauma to the animal can be greatly minimized, so it is not necessarily a “death sentence”.
They also suffer from GI issues including constipation, which, as funny as it sounds, is quite lethal to them (even 2-3 days without a bowel movement is enough for gasses to build up in their GI tract and cause an internal rupture, severe pain, and death).
All of the above tend to evidence themselves before the chinchilla has turned ~6 years old. This is not to say that aging chinchillas may not come down with other ailments, but as a rule, if they are properly cared for and live past 6, they will probably live at least another 6 years, usually more.
Most healthy chinchillas live between 14-16 years, but high-quality hay, pellets, toys, large environments, exercise, and low-stress/a good relationship with their owner can all extend their lifespans by many more years, a close friend of mine has a 22 year old chinchilla that look as if it was only 12 (it’s very hard to tell their age, especially the older they get, and unlike humans, elderly chinchillas rarely suffer from arthritis and are almost as active/energetic as one that is still a juvenile/young adult.
As someone who LOVES these creatures to death, I will say, do your research and know that they are not generally “cuddly”, despite being soft, and demand a great deal of respect, attention, and micro-management, especially during the first year or two. Everything having been said, for the right person, they can make an amazing companion that can very reasonably be expected to live close to 2 decades if properly bred and cared for :)

You are an inspiration! I got my chinchilla Pikachu about two years ago and we bonded pretty well but he doesn't enjoy Alot of playtime or being taken out of his cage. Watching your videos is showing me that I need to step it up and give him the life he deserves. My chinchilla came from a couple that I met at petco who saw me watching the ferrets and asked if I was interested in a really interesting pet. They told me that there daughter had moved away for college and couldn't bring the chinchilla with her so he was left home with the parents and didn't receive much attention. We picked up Pikachu the next day and I have spent the past two years gaining his trust and getting him comfortable with me picking him up and letting him out and cleaning out his cage. I am planning to move him to my bedroom in the morning and making him my first priority! We have gotten comfortable being close to each other so now it's time for him to run and play (with close supervision of course!) thank you for all you teach us. Pikachu appreciates it more than you will ever know!

    • @justloliehh
      @justloliehh 4 года назад +25

Most chinchilla's don't like to be held, some accept it for a little bit but it's very rare for a chinchilla to be fully oke with being held.
What i did for my chinchillas is slowely teaching them to get used to sitting on my hand by giving them treats.
first let them be close to your hand then let them eat it half way on your hand(front paws).
move the treats further away once they get comfortable doing the first steps.
Then once she's comfortable with being on your hands you can try lifting your hand off the ground a bit (not to fast or too far because they might jump off)
After a while they will get comfortable with touching your hand and being held. slowely get them used to be fully held.
ALWAYS LET THEM COME TO YOU!! You don't want them to be afraid of you or your hands
You do not want them to associate your hands with being picked up(since they don't really enjoy it) so don't always pick them up when interacting with them.
      I hope this was useful

You can try getting a hay basket for your chin and carry the hay basket around your house with your chin and by carrying the hay basket with your chin inside could probably let you carry them but most chinchillas doesn't really like to be carried. But there might be a chance that they would allow you to carry them for a few minutes, unless your chinchilla has really bonded like mine therefore I can carry her around for like 5-10 minutes and sometimes she'll sleep on my lap. :)

Hi! I love your videos but could really use some guidance! I have two chinchillas. I’ve had my older chinchilla for 7 months. He’s learning to come to me with taps on the ground and treats, but he’s really naughty. He chews everything at playtime. What kinds of toys do you use at playtime to keep them from chewing the molding? The second chinchilla I have is 15 weeks old. He CONSTANTLY wants to play and come out of his cage. I give them 30 mins to an hour of play time 6 days per week. Is that enough? Also, I’m trying to bond them. I let them play together for a few minutes every so many days - but playtime usually ends in a fight, a bite, and fur skip (the older chinchilla tries to attack the baby) I separate them immediately but idk how else to get them used to each other. Thoughts? Thanks so much!

I have no idea as to bonding chinchillas. I'm trying to find one for my boy, but what I've learned is they aren't always going to match. They may never bond to each other and will need to be separate their whole lives, but one possibility is waiting until the baby is full size and then introducing them in a neutral area that neither of them have been in with new toys that neither of them have touched. It should help with your older one being territorial since nothing is claimed and it is new to both of them.

I take it you wash the fleece once a week in the washing washing machine No Powder as that is Toxic to a chin. I wash mine once a week on a 30c wash with just water and put fresh fleece in. You're cages are still dirty all you have to do is shake the Fleece.. My cages are spotless after i clean mine.

I got a second chinchilla so my first one has a friend (both female) and the older one started chasing the younger one and bothering her to where she is slipping. They dont really fight per say, but I was wondering if that's a sign of dominance or bullying and should just leave them or keep them separate

    • @CertifiedTravelBunny

I've read on rescue sites to put them in a new cage. The old one is being territorial if you put the new one in the old one's cage.

And the older one I've had a year (so shes about a year and 3 months old) and the younger one I've had for about 3 months (I'd put her about 6 or 7 months old) so the age difference shouldn't be much of a factor

the worst part about having pets is the first few weeks where you have to control yourself so they get used to everything 😭😭😭
If I could I would shower them in love from day one 😍 but the thought of scaring them and them then not liking me always held me back so far 😁
but I must say that I was lucky that my chins warmed up to their new home very quickly, nibbling my hands whenever i had to clean the cage/ give new food and water after like 3days

Hey, what's the sense of having two chinchillas apart? I always heard they love and need to live together with others. Is it that just temporary? I'm asking because I took an other chin too. :)

    • @AwesomeRara

just like humans, some pairs get along well, and some pairs hate each other to the bone.
my elder skinnier boy got along well with my younger plumper boy, until the younger boy got much larger than the elder boy, and the younger boy started showing dominance to the elder boy.
it was very distressing for me to see because we love them so much but for one to bully the other almost daily was very difficult. we had no choice but to separate their homes at one point.
the cage was 1.5 meters tall x 1.4 meters wide x 0.35 meters depth, so we split the cage down the middle. first we tried grills, but they would still try to get at each other so we had to switch to an opaque black divider - it was difficult to watch 🥺

Sara Rossi the two chinchillas haven’t been bonded yet so they can’t live together yet and if she bonds them, she my still keep them separated depending on how the respond to each other

Also what mini hand sweeper/pan are you using? Thanks!!!
