I always hold on to this saying, although i have no idea who said it...'we scream at God for the starving child and never see that God IS the starving child, screaming at us.'
As long as we remain attache to the bodily concept of life, that means, identifaing the self with the body (I'm the body and its subsequents designation: l'm white, I'm man, women, jew, muslim, mexican etc.) As the orthodoxy leas us to think, the same Rab Tobias Singer poined out calling it ethnic religion, perhaps unaware of how pernicious this means, the question of: "Where was God in Auschwitz"?, will remain always a mystery! Perhaps, among others, one of the great contributions of the Hebrew State, was to reverse this curse...
So could it be said that the Shoah’s occurrence indicates the degree of which man was given free-will, as in, in total the world really misused their free-will leading to this point? Honestly, it’s still something that I've had to table in mind and am waiting on Mashiachs arrival and explanation of it all
The adversary showed his full hand at Auschwitz and places like it. He intended it to be utterly devastating for faith in G_d of any kind. The desolation in T.S.Eliots 'Waste Land' had its evil flowering there. Like Primo Levi, we are all forced to ask how can there be poetry, or music, after such a place ? The resilience of life as celebrated by Rabbi Sacks is part of the answer. Those who risked lives, and paid the price, to try to save others, are part of the answer. The countless little acts of humanity known only to G_d in such terrible circumstances, are part of the answer, and those who chose not to abandon innocents in their care, sent there, by going themselves, are part of the answer. The sovereignty of the inner Frankl in the face of the unspeakable, is part of the answer. The Almighty suffered there, in the person of everyone who did.
I'm so sorry Rabbi but I can't accept this reasoning. God watched his chosen people in inexplicable pain, agony and injystice and did nothing because we ( essentially your argument) have free will? God is guilty. And I have heard nothing from anyone to change that fact
God created Adam and made him live in Paradise and gave him commandments. Adam was the one who sinned, then he gave his commandments to humans and they are responsible for their actions, as in the law, he holds accountable those who are 18 years old. And God helps those who follow His commandments
I've struggled with this question my whole life. My grandparents were holocaust survivors and immigrated to Israel and talked very little about the horrors they've witnessed. My answer came to me after the attack of the 7th of October, when they found the charred remains, that was later forensic identified as a father bond by electric wire to his small child. There is no God, and if there is one - he's a sadist.

No, the real question is where was God during Auschwitz ? A survivor of this concentration, camp sums it up in a few statements. "The most important lesson one can learn from Auschwitz is that God does not exist." " By far the simplest explanation for Auschwitz is that there is no God to intervene in human affairs. No deity exists to care what we do to each other. All compassion and all hatred in the human universe is ours. We are on our own." I couldn't agree more with this survivor !
