    Just did this (plus the coil) this afternoon. That tip about unplugging the fuel injectors to make access easier was really helpful. You can go straight in with just an extension on all 4 plugs. There's at least one video on here where the guy claims you have to separate the two parts of the intake manifold for access and he couldn't be more wrong.

    You are extremely generous with your hard earned knowledge & skills - Thank you and it is so helpful to watch your video before doing the same project on my AEG. Speeds the job up by hours and thanks too for saving me from having to look up tightening torques and tool sizes. Thumbs up!I'm sure you have already mentioned this in other posts but for your viewers who saw you spraying the air pump O-rings - I'd like to add that if spraying or applying a lubricant anywhere near the intake make sure the stuff is silicone-free. Silicone will ruin the MAF sensor and no amount of MAF cleaner will remove the silicone from the sensor. I believe it can also take out one or both oxygen sensors because the silicone bonds with the zirconia and reduces the oxygen permeability of the sensor.

    VW and Audi went all out to make sure you couldn't do this job yourself with these vehicles. From the wrong angled plugs to those fucking spark leads. $68 AUD for the tool to remove them. Even then it was dicey. Your video helped heaps when I had issues with this POS. Glad I sold it.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  7 лет назад +1

      Everything can be done without "special tools"... it might take longer and you might run into problems, but it can be done. I can list several non-vw vehicles where changing plugs is waaaaaay more difficult (old & new vehicles). People panic way too soon or are impatient when trying to do repairs. People shouldn't complain about the fact that special tools are needed... they should be happy that the manufacturer has designed tools to make life easier. Yes the tools cost money, but if someone keeps a car for the long-run, then those tools will get used over & over... the tool that cost $100, will cost less than $1 when broken down over 10 years. If I complained about the $70k+ that I had to spend on tools... I wouldn't have a job.

    • @EXOVCDS

      It's always good to replace ignition components if they are 8+ years old. P0301 misfire #1 can be due to spark plug, spark plug wire, ignition coil, low compression, fuel injector... the more you rule-out/check, the better the odds of finding the problem.

      I haven't applied anti-seize on spark plugs in over 20 years. Plug threads already have a protective coating on them. As long as the plugs are not left in for 10+ years (and are not over tightened) there should not be a removal issue. If a little bit of anti-seize makes you feel better, feel free to add a bit.

    My wife owns a 2004 New Beetle GLS Automatic. It was bought new in June 2004 and now has 85,000 miles on it. The "check engine" light came on and we took to our local VW Dealership. The problem, bad coil pack. They are going to replace the coil pack and I asked they replace the spark plugs and plug wires at the same time. Total parts and labor costs: $983.60 plus tax. • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  8 лет назад +4

      +joelphnx Check the spark plug, check the spark plug wire, check compression, check the fuel injector... if all is fine, most likely a bad coil. You can spray the ignition coil with a water/ammonia mix and look for sparks / stalling. Start the engine, let idle and mist the coil... sometimes, you have to wait a few minutes for the fluid to find the "weak part" of the ignition system. You can spray the spark plug wires as well. Any misfire after spraying, points to an ignition system problem.

    I think I was shipped the wrong spark plugs saying they "fit" a mk4 jetta 2.0L, but there seems to be a difference for AEG (my engine code is AVH). Are they interchangeable? It has 3 electrodes, not the single. NGK Spark Plugs BKUR6ET-10 (Stock # 2397) 🤷‍♂️

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  3 года назад +1

      www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-volkswagen-audi-parts/spark-plugs-priced-each/101000033aa/
      ECSTuning lists them as "for all 2.0"... the single electrode plugs for AVH are not threaded all the way to the tip, like the AEG plugs. Remove one of your old plugs and compare the length, if the length is the same, they should work fine. In some cases, multi electrode plugs can have an adverse effect, due to overall weaker spark (single spark being stronger / hotter). Main thing would be that the plug does not extend farther into the cylinder than your stock plugs. To be safe, return / exchange them... if you are not sure / don't want to chance it.

      Sorry, I can't find the TSB that I'm thinking of.
      Does the engine run fine or rough?
      2x2 ignition coil or 4 in-line?
      In both cases, there is one ground wire in the connector.
      Make sure that the contacts in the coil & the connector are clean and that the contacts (in the plug) clamp well.
      Cutting the ground wire of the coil harness plug (a few inches from the connector) and attaching a new ground wire to the cut harness plug wire and attaching the ground wire to the battery negative clamp... can cure ignition coil circuit fault codes.

    i'm sorry to say but #2 spark plug is way more hidden than it looks on your video on my 2002 VW Golf. It's in very tight space and I'm afraid that I will not be able to remove socket from there. I need to use angled adapter for ratchet + 1 or 2 straight extensions to be able to remove spark plug. Just afraid to screw it up. I replaced other 3 (#1 was misfiring) and car is running OK now but wanted to replace all of them since they haven't been replaced for a long time and I don't know what condition #2 is in.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  4 года назад

      If your intake manifold looks like the one in this video... there should be no reason why you shouldn't be able to remove #2, since #2 is angled the same way as #3 (just in the other direction).

    • @mirobjelovuk4657
      @mirobjelovuk4657 4 года назад

      @@EXOVCDS It's similar but seem to be wider. #2 is not visible underneath it when you look straight down. I don't know why that is but unfortunately it is the fact. Other three, it was a breeze. #2 is a big big pain. Last thing I was able to do was to take boot off and try to put socket on top of the spark plug. Thought I did and was ratcheting but it didn't seem to snug on spark plug at all and I had difficulties pulling out socket and ratchet extenders and angler so I just put boot back on. Luckily, it was running fine as before. I'm not really sure what to do now. Wait for garages to open and have it done by professional or keep trying risking to create problems that I don't have right now since car is running fine now.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  8 лет назад

      +John Horsley With age, the tube can be VERY brittle... so be careful. Electric tape should do the trick just fine. You could go as far as removing the tube from the end fittings (slide the tube off after warming it up with a heat gun) and then sliding a rubber hose over the end fittings and running the hose from the pump to the combi valve.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  6 лет назад

      I'm not sure what you mean. Spark plugs are connected to the ignition coil. I'm replacing the spark plug wires. If the coil is bad, the coil gets replaced at the same time. Replacing the harness plug wires of the ignition coil is not needed, unless there is a problem with the connector / wiring.

    hey thomas, quick question. so i bought new ngk wires from amazon. Amazon and the reviewers said that it would fit. When i tried to put in on the spark plug it wouldnt go in. i noticed the old csbles said 7mm and the new ones say 5mm. does that have anything to do with it? thanks in advance

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  8 лет назад

      The spark plugs should have big heads at the tip (right side of this image): ae01.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1lH4sIpXXXXc2XpXXq6xXFXXXa/OEM-Engine-1-8T-Genuine-Original-NGK-Iridium-Spark-Plugs-For-VW-Passat-B5-Jetta-Golf.jpg_640x640.jpg
      If the spark plug tip (where the cable goes) looks like this: www.volkswagen.co.uk/assets/content/owners/SparkPlugs.jpg (has threads), then the plugs will not clip into the cables.
      Or if the plug wires have a small hole, then they won't fit on the bigger head spark plug.
      These images are just generic images to show what I am talking about, they don't mean that either apply to your car.

    • @DarkManagerful
      @DarkManagerful 8 лет назад

      I see. I noticed that the actual hole in the wires are different size. So how should i go about this. Do i buy different plugs or is there anything else i can do. I didnt know that plugs had different sizes. Thanks

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  8 лет назад

      Sorry about the late reply... I'm at work. Sometimes the little tip on the spark plug can be unscrewed... leaving a smaller screwed connection behind. Don't try to force the tip when trying to unscrew... if it is not an unscrew design, you might break the spark plug.

    Thanks Thomas! By any chance do you have any experience with using iridium spark plugs in the AEG engine? There is lots of information on vwvortex. Some guys saying that they didn't have any issues others saying that they had an electrical whine through the radio when using the original spark plug wires. But with newer thicker cables everything is good. Other chaps saying to just stick to the original OEM triple prong spark plugs. Just would like your opinion as you have loads of VAG cars going through your hands. Cheers!

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  3 года назад +1

      Stock AEG plugs are BKUR6ET... there are man brands that meet the specs / cross reference with that style of plug (including a couple Iridium).
      www.sparkplug-crossreference.com/convert/NGK_PN/BKUR6ET
      What works for one, might not work for someone else (driving habits, location / ambient temperature, age of engine (burns oil), correct cooling system operation (runs too cold / too warm)... you might have to do some testing to see what works best for you.

    One more question. I want to put the bosch +4 plugs on but cannot find the number for the avh engine. Would you know that part number it is?

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  9 лет назад

      ***** Most auto parts stores will have a buyers guide where you can look at manufacturer recommendations for which plugs to use (or cross reference what will work). I would stick with what is recommended and not go with something that is not listed. The ignition system only puts out as much power as it needs to. More spark plug electrodes can cause a weaker spark (even though there might be multiple sparks) which can be less effective in igniting the fuel than 1 good spark from a single electrode plug.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  10 лет назад

      The wires were replaced as per customer request... checking with an ohm meter only checks resistance, the wires can still fail under load. I use an ignition testing spray to check for arcing and a scope for signs of uneven kv. Replacing the wires every 5 to 8 years is good preventative maintenance practice.

    • @EXOVCDS

      +Shelly Jones I don't know anything about grand prix's... spark plug wires? Coil on plug? Re-check the spark plug gap on all the plugs. If it has plug wires, check the resistance of them all and for any arcing to ground. If it has coil on plugs, changing spark plugs should not affect the coils, so check the spark plugs again.

    Between myself and my 2 daughters, we have 3 manual 2.0 Jettas. Two are 2000 models and the other one is a 2003. The 2003 and one of the 2000s has an S.A.I. pump. The other 2000 doesn't. They all came from the factory this way as the one that doesn't have the pump is also lacking the fitting on the air box. Can you tell me what the S.A.I. pump is and what S.A.I. stands for? Also, why is one car missing this pump? Thanks.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  8 лет назад +1

      Secondary Air Injection System... it's an emission device / system that injects / adds air into the exhaust system ahead of the catalytic converter. It helps lower emissions when the engine is cold started and helps the catalytic converter warm-up quicker. Some engines have it some don't... depends on the fuel injection system / version. If you compare the engine code of the two 2000 vehicles, one might be AEG and the other AVH or if both AEG, then there are some injection system differences, software version or other factors. I'm no VW engineer... I just try to fix cars as I see them. :)

    If you don't mind, I would like to get your opinion on my situation. I'm getting an error code for misfire in cylinder 3 and I have felt the misfires for about two weeks. However, the motor has been burning way too much gas an oil for the past 7 months. It was running cold when the outdoor temperature dropped and I got a p1296 error code, which from what I understood, meant either the coolant temp sensor or the thermostat was shot. I replaced the CTS with no change to running temps. Had a shop change the thermostat and now it runs at normal temps. BUT it is still burning lots of gas and oil and now misfiring. A friend though it could be the head gasket (he removed the oil cap while the motor was running and felt puffs of air coming out to confirm his suspicions). Any insights?
    Also, thanks for uploading the video.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  9 лет назад +1

      C Rice Sorry about the late reply... pressure pulses out of the oil filler cap area is normal (bypass gasses from the cylinders. Sample: instagram.com/p/ywFjz7FDfW/ there is a point when it's too much, that needs to be determined. Smell the oil on the dipstick. If the oil smells of fuel, check for fouled spark plugs, leaky injector, too much fuel pressure etc.

      Yes, I had a bad injector that caused misfires... depending on how it fails, it may or may not set an injector fault code. Recheck the spark plug & wire. Don't replace the injector unless it has been verified by a shop as being bad. Compression & leak down test of the cylinder should be done as well, to make sure there is no mechanical fault. Here's how I checked the injector:

      Earl Charles if it's a constant misfire or one where the check engine light is flashing frequently... don't drive it. The catalytic converter can overheat / glow and cause a fire (or at minimum the converter will also need to be replaced). Compression & leak down test shouldn't take longer than 1hr.

    how do i remove the coil pack ?

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  9 лет назад +1

      Darrel Esteria if you have a secondary are injection pump that is covering the ignition coil... remove the pump (bracket is mounted to intake via 6mm Allen bolts). Once the pump is out of the way, remove the three 5mm Allen bolts that hold the coil to the block. Transfer the plug wires over to the new coil one at a time to not mix them up. Disconnect the coil harness plug and transfer it over to the new coil. Assemble in reverse.

    Why is it that you are disconnecting the air pump and hose ?????

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  6 лет назад

      The ignition coil is under the air pump... to remove the wires, you need to get under the pump. Show me how to do it differently!!!!!.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  7 лет назад +1

      Wiggle & pull... wiggle & pull. Use dielectric grease on the rubber contact surfaces to make removal easier the next time (rubber will not stick to the spark plug as much).

    • @johnamon83
      @johnamon83 7 лет назад

      Thomas EXOVCDS the last time I wiggled and pulled I ended up breaking shit lol. ended up using 2 flat heads to spin and they popped off. figured the tool would be easier than that.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  8 лет назад

      I drive an E34 525i same engine and the spark plugs are harder to get at than the golf (in my opinion). All cars will have their problem areas... they (golf) make up for it in repair cost (cheaper than BMW).

    • @pyrelord1234
      @pyrelord1234 8 лет назад

      +Thomas EXOVCDS the plugs are pretty easy to get to actually but i agree golfs are cheaper to work on but id rather work on a car with more convenience than a car with that requires reaching around something
