College will always be there if you decide to go back. I'm currently in community college and I hope to transfer to a 4 year university. Although I still kind of think I'm missing out on the full college experience, being able to stay at home with my family has been so much better for my mental health and for money saving purposes. Just remember that everyone has their own path that they take 💕

I'm happy for you that your parents let you stay at home because of money reasons but most importantly for your mental health. I don't have parents. After my foster parent found out about how I got accepted to the community college (that I'm still currently at) she told me about if I lived on campus it would be easier for me because of classes/to meet people. I am glad I was able to move into the dorms but mentally after living I'm the dorms for a few months its mentally exhausting. My point is you arent really missing anything except being roomed with complete strangers that I dont understand how my roommates got matched up with me

Selena Y. Thank you for sharing!!! I’m actually just about done with my first semester. I can see where your foster parent was coming from because it has definitely sometimes been hard for me to get to class due to car issues. But on the other hand college is already such a huge transition from high school so being able to stay in an environment that you’re already familiar with can be a big help. This especially applies to those who are first generation college students and don’t have anyone who can tell them what it’s like. I’m wishing you good luck as you continue with school and life 😊

Hi Roxanna I totally get where you're coming from. I just finished community college this past May. I dont regret it, I know I saved thousands of dollars and I am not in debt. My plan was/is to transfer to a 4 year. I've gotten into the school I want to go to but I've decided to hold off because of finances. So it's been an interesting experience being home it's good and bad. It's like relaxing but stressful. I dont have pressure of grades and homework but there is also this uncertainty in it all. If you are a creative person business majors are probably not the best lol. That being said college isn't for everyone and if it is making you so miserable and you have better options that you enjoy, take those. It's sad to see how society has placed this sense of self worth on whether you get a degree or not. And to make you feel any better, unless you get your degree in undergrad to enter into some graduate or undergrad program like medical school, law school, PA, PTA, PT, then its extremely hard to even find a job and sometimes you are working jobs that are not even what your degree was about which thens up creating a life that is unfulfilled. Props to you for realizing your options early. School will always be there.

DO NOT MAJOR IN COMMUNICATIONS I REPEAT DO NOT MAJOR IN COMMUNICATIONS! my dad is an English major and he works in communications and he has straight up said that communications majors are always the worst applicants and he doesn't hire them. If you want to work in PR/communications study English instead because knowing how to write well is a really valuable skill in that field! This has been a PSA.

Obviously I have never been a communications major so I'm just reciting things I have been told. It's also worth mentioning that part of it can probably be attributed to the fact that English is kind of a dying major and he feels protective of it but not so much that it would invalidate his opinion.

I feel like I needed to improve my writing skills. Writing is important for most jobs anyways. But I also feel like a lot of employers just bash recent college grads in general. I always hear on the side that we're not prepared ( not just COMM majors) .I know I don't know everything, but I do know craft takes time, practice and maybe years to grab. That's why internships are SO important. If I was an undergrad, I would REALLY focus on perfecting my craft and doing more internships. Jen. Hi.
I'm 20 years old (so I think we're like the same age??) and I completely relate. _ughihavesomuchtosayokay_
So I also dropped out of college with media classes and I was terrified to hear what people had to say about it.
My reason to drop out was that my mental health was seriously going down the drain and I couldn't even get myself to go there anymore.
So here's what I learned from that and wanted to share (obviously it's not the *exact* same situation but y'know-):
    1. You are in charge!! You're an adult (legally at least, adulting _whaaat_ I know, same tbh) so you can make big decisions like these no matter what your family/friend/whoever says (unless it's the cops, seriously stay out of jail kids)
My family was 0% supportive of me dropping out and I ended up having to move into my own place; I can't stress enough how important it is to make decisions that make YOU happy! (Your no might make them angry but it will make you free)
    2. Literally *NO ONE* knows what they're doing. Seriously, we all have no clue.
I have so many things that I can see myself doing in the future and I don't know if I'm gonna enjoy any of them. It is terrifying and it f-cking sucks but I'm never going to know if I don't try which brings me to my next point...
    3. It is OKAY to make mistakes. (insert rant about capitalistic society and high expectations) We need to make mistakes to learn new things about us just like you said and idc what anyone says but it's fine. Like 1000% okay. No one has any right to be mad at you for making a mistake, no one has any right to hold that against you or make you feel bad. I made mistakes too, am I proud of them? No. And it's scary to admit to them because we all feel pressured to achieve and function in society. But honestly-
    4. _DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY!_ (I trust that anyone that reads this won't hurt anyone else in the process) Take that step back. Focus on yourself. Go for that break. Try out that new thing. Reach out when you're sad. Don't forget number 3. You are SO loved and there are SO many people that care about you.
To end this philosophical ramble, take a quote from my fave John Green: " You are helpful. And you are loved. And you are forgiven. And you are not alone."
    _yeet_

Gosh, some of the people in these comments... College is not the center of the universe. It's not for everyone. If you want to go-- go. But it's no one's job to try and force someone else to go or shame them for not going or dropping out. People have their reasons for the way they handle their college experience, and no one has the right to try to control that. Everyone's mindset is different. People act like someone is "pathetic" for dropping out of school or not going, but to me, it's sad when people do go and end up miserable the entire time because they sacrifice their mental or physical health. I'm proud of you for doing what you felt was best, Jen.

Feel the same... my parents, specially my dad, thought I was being ungrateful for failing a couple of classes in university. Truth is, I was suffering from anxiety, felt worthless most of the time and sometimes I even wanted to die. But to them, I was being just a spoiled brat because "college was harder when they attended", so I invited them to see all the work I did in college and finally they understood that for some reason my college experience was very different from theirs.

*Hey Jen, you're still doing great and did better than I ever have. I am a Junior at university right now, and thankfully I have a big traditional campus to enjoy everything, but I don't. I also don't know what I want to do, but I chose a degree that I thought would be best for me. Not going to college was also not an option for me, and it sucks more that I got a full ride scholarship that I cannot walk away from easily. My friends have paid insane amounts and I feel guilty when I do bad and see them struggling to pay their tuition. My friends and I always joke about wanting to die and dropping out. We are always tired and sleeping and we don't even feel like going out, I've seen my friends stressed and crying. It really is depressing and having a lot of stress doesn't help. My GPA is far lower than your, a low 3.0 but at this point Cs get degress and I'm just trying to make my Mexican parents proud. College isn't for everyone and it isn't the perfect little experience everyone expects. Fortunately things are looking better for me, although I don't think I'll end up using my degree at this point. I'm glad you found your way out and I hope day you can find something you like so you can get that degree you always dreamed about! I'm not giving up because there's a ton of occupations I want to try after college and I'm definitely ready! You go girl, love you!*

Ended up deciding to go back, and the second drop out came after being sexually assaulted. I moved back in with my grandparents and ended up taking classes I loved at the community college near me and really love the school and the environment and actually met the love of my life at said school!! I’m currently taking a semester (or maybe two) break to kind of get myself together and get a plan for my life, now that I’ve actually decided what it is I really want to do with my life (lol, maybe, it changes sometimes on the daily) but I know I want to work in retail or marketing, and either open my own clothing boutique or work for the big mouse in charge at one of the Disney parks :)

I don't think you had your priorities straight in college. You said that you were always busy with school and youtube but a lot of people with a big following like you tend to forget that youtube and your subscribers will be there at the end of your final. I feel like you should have put youtube in the back burner while you were trying to do good in college and have a social life and that's what made you miserable. Thinking if you don't upload then you won't be as popular. As you said, RUclips and your popularity on social media isn't going to last so why waste time building something that is going to crumble right in front of you? School will always be there but trust me, once you're used to staying at home and filming for a living and earning millions basically doing the easiest "job" out there (lets be real), you're not going to like the reality that people have to earn degrees and work hard everyday.

I dropped out of college in my senior year. At the time, I thought it was a terrible decision, but later, after I knew myself better, I went back to a much better school and got my BFA. Then, some years later, after I FINALLY figured out what I wanted to be when I grew up, l went back again and got my Masters. And I didn’t have a successful RUclips channel, like you, because back then, there was no RUclips and no internet and computers that could fit on desks were a new thing (yes, I am an old lady). But it all turned out all right for me in the end, and I have confidence it will for you, too. You already have a successful RUclips channel! That’s great! If that’s your passion, keep going with it. College can always be an option for you later on. You have your whole life ahead of you-might as well follow your passion. If it doesn’t work out, you can always change direction later on, when you know more about yourself and about life.

I feel so scared right now because I think I’m gonna stop college tomorrow .I am 18 and was very confused regarding what college should I go to .I wanted Web Design but there is no college even close to it in my country so I picked Computer Science .My major in highschool was Literature so I haven’t done maths in 3 years now .I decided to go to this college where there was no admission exam required and got it because I had a really high GPA but my GPA was for something totally different than what the college was about .I’ve been going to this college for a week now and I’m mentally destroyed ,I can’t keep up because I lost years and years of maths and I just don’t understand a thing... I went to so many classes and I couldn’t even take notes properbly because AGAIN I was parallel to this subject .Everyone screams at me saying “You knew what you were getting into” but the truth is I didn’t ,I am freshly 18 ,my parents put me in school one year earlier than the other children btw and I am so confused right now ... I really want to go to college but I know for sure that this is not for me in this moment of my life because I literally cannot keep up .It would be okay if there were no tests or exams or exercises in front on the class but there are .They already started asking students to go in front of the class and solve problems for points ...my mom tells to just keep going but I told her it’s impossible because teachers want you to be present and learn all they teach and I can’t learn some complicated shit when I don’t know any pf the basics .If they pick me I wouldn’t solve shit there cause I’m clueless ...next month they announced a test already and I’m fuckec because there is no way I can catch up on 4 years of M1 mathematics and the one teached in college . I never been so scared in my life and my parents don’t understand because they keep saying that I should have it all figured out . I am so terrified ....I just try to calm myself by telling me that I can also enroll again ...I actually have classmates at this college that literally tried 3 colleges before ,others that took one year break to rediscover themselves ,others that are 40 ,30,46,39 etc. I know it is my mistake for getting in here but I also was clueless and I knew I wanted to do web design which I have done before and it doesn’t compare to the craziness we do here .Any advice would be well appreaciated 😭

i feel like theres an obligation in any asian family that college/university is mandatory, and if you do not graduate, you seem worthless. and sometimes, they say you have to be a doctor or engineer, but that may not be of interest to you. sure, you may need it to get a good, stable job, but sometimes thats not what makes you happy. and i hate when they compare you to other people like family and cousins, what really matters is that you are happy and have some way of creating income to sustain yourself. also, universities such as harvard and yale are not a reason to brag for, if anything, there is a higher graduation rate from schools that are not as high level, and often it is more expensive. and nowadays, its easier to make a living without the need of university through entrepreneurship and etc. im just glad my parents are not too strict.

I'm in the same situation, and even though my parents aren't Asian they would so freak out if I told them I want to drop out. I'm so miserable right now because I don't like what I'm doing. It's not what I wanted to study and my parents were the ones who pushed me in this direction. I really liked your video and the way you exposed yourself so honestly, that's so brave of you. I wish I could do the same.

I dropped out of College as well because of my mental health. The school lacked resources and the staff lacked empathy.
I just re-enrolled into a better University with tons of resources and wonderful staff. I'm much happier now and I'm glad I made the decision I made.

Really appreciate you being honest with us and sharing your story❤️ It must of been hard to post this so thank you, we support you!! I could definitely understand, coming from an Asian family myself, the pressure of staying in school and trying to adhere to traditional expectations. My parents aren’t that strict but I still somehow feel like I always have to do well??? If not I just feel like a failure and idk why. Ive felt like that ever since I was really young. So when you talked about having such high expectations for yourself even if your parents weren’t pressuring you and freaking out over a lower grade than normal (even if other people might say it’s still a good mark), I FELT THAT GIRL. I’m really glad that your parents were supportive and I’m wishing you all the best! I look forward to hearing what’s to come! Also you mentioned that you were having a hard time since you moved back and I’d be interested in hearing that story in another video :)

Ok so I'm a junior in highschool, and this helps so much, especially the story of your acceptances and stuff. And honestly, you're fine. Your school experience was most likely normal, I wouldn't know. But at least you're out, and done trying to actually enjoy this stuff. Just take your feelings and stuff into account. That's all. If you don't enjoy it, or its too much, its fine. I'm glad you're (maybe??) A bit happier.

Anyone else knew that her announcement was about dropping out even before watching her main channel video? Even with your vlogs there has always been this feeling of you not enjoying new York at all. I remember very clearly when you mentioned in a video that your course isn't what you thought it'd be. The only reason i never thought you'd drop out was because you are Asian (i am Asian too i feel ya). Proud of you that you took this step. Now you have time to actually invest in whatever you really want and we'll there's always online school if you ever wanna continue with it. Good luck Jen i am extremely proud of you❤️

Can definitely relate Jen. I've finished 1st year doing Exercise Physiology at a prestigious university in Australia. I had no idea what to do after Year 12 either. Everyone, especially my parents, urged me to go to uni. I got a really good result in high school, so I decided to pursue further study. I kinda loved my course at the beginning, but I kept getting borderline Passes in Semester 1 to Fails (I believe - we get our marks soon) in Semester 2. I'm seriously considering dropping out, but I feel obligated to keep going or at least transfer to another course because of my parents' expectations. Plus, in order to be successful with a stable career, everyone says you must get a degree.
I've recently been diagnosed with clinical depression. University is what triggers it. I'm currently seeing a psychologist, and I've got decently-supportive friends and family. I haven't hung out with my friends in so long. I don't even have a "best" friend to talk about my life to. However, now that my exams and 2nd Semester's over though, I feel like I can breathe again and do things without feeling guilty because I have nothing to study for at the moment. It's good though because I love being by myself. I learn about and love myself more.
I'm so glad that you have such supportive friends and family Jen. I'm really happy you've gone after your passions, even if you had to "waste" time and money to do so. I really hope I find my way soon. Although I still have no idea what to do, and there's so much pressure, I know God has a plan for me.
If anyone has taken the time to read my comment, I'd really love some advice and I'd greatly appreciate you keep a stranger in your thoughts and prayers.

C G I think you should take the Myers Briggs personality test. I already knew what I wanted to be but I took it anyway because my counselor suggested it. In the results, it showed a list of my potential career choices that my personality fits. I feel like that's a great start for you since you don't know what you want to do. Also, try out some hobbies to see what you enjoy or don't enjoy. Some people were able to make a whole career out of their passion (music, art, dance, etc.). Since you have depression, it's very important that you take good care of yourself. Do meditation, journaling, listen to motivational music, find inspirational quotes and place them where you often look, go for a walk when you're stressed out, treat yourself to a bubble bath, etc.

I didn't continue my study after high school. My ambition is to be a veterinarian so bad until this second. I decided to not continue because of finance. I don't want my dad (he's the only one working) to financially support me anymore. He's 59 yo and his wish during his birthday was to retire at 60 and vet course is atleast 5 years which I'm certainly sure he will still work until I graduated. Ya I can find a scholarship but I'm not confident with my results because this kid was playing during high school time :') So yaaaa...none of the people that know me knows the exact reason I'm not continuing my study. I always told them I'm tired of studying. I've been working for almost two years now saving money to study vet tech and plus I'm currently working as vet assistant. Not the job and achievement I wanted but I'm around that goal rn.

I had the same experience as you, but slightly different. :P Ended up going to a school I hated because I felt like I didn’t have any other choice, ended up dropping out after sophomore year. Ten years later, I decided to go back to school and I LOVE IT. I’m going to a school I connect with and am studying something I know I’m going to continue being interested in. So this is me saying you’re never too old for school if that’s what you want! But again, school isn’t for anyone, so you shouldn’t feel bad about your decisions if that’s what is making you happy. :)

I just hope that you keep learning, we are in the best time to learn new things without the need to spend a bunch of money. I have a full time job and go to college, not fun but I like my major so I keep going. Wish you the best in this new point of your life.
