  • @ToaArcan
    @ToaArcan 6 лет назад +540

    Anyone who thinks feathered Dinosaurs are less scary clearly hasn't had to deal with geese. Or swans. Let alone cassowaries.
    Tyrannosaurids being scavengers has been widely refuted and only Jack Horner (Who happens to be the Paleontology consultant for some of the Jurassic Park films) really championed it that much. Like most predators it wouldn't turn its nose up at a free fresh corpse, but there's clear evidence of Tyrannosaurus rex being an active hunter. It may or may not have been fluffier than expected.
    The confusion surrounding Velociraptor's size mostly stems from people hearing that the creature was 2 metres long and imagining something about the size of an adult male human. However, it's two metres *long*, not tall. Something like T rex was 12 metres in length on average, but only 6 metres tall, and Velociraptor's body length is mostly made up of tail.

    • @Michae89
      @Michae89 6 лет назад +40

      Also moviemakers just got the velociraptors size wrong. I don't know if they were the same size in books. Get that T-Rex slander out of here! That was just one dude pushing that theory, and even he mainly did it to promote critical thinking. The modern theory is that T-Rex probably hunted and scavenged.

  • @brainflash1
    @brainflash1 6 лет назад +141

    Actually Yahtzee, they've changed their position on the T-rex being mostly a scavenger. But on the flip side, they couldn't run fast enough to catch a jeep.
    This game would've been a lot better if it was designed more like Rollercoaster Tycoon than the Sims. The each species could have a different ride or activity assigned to it and you have to work your way up to the cooler ones.

    • @NickKinsman3D
      @NickKinsman3D 6 лет назад +25

      Yup, the T-Rex work was shoddy at best and has been widely refuted.
      You can also find pretty good breakdowns of why the velociraptor "umm actually" is a mixed signal more than a "scientific correction." The film version did have a real life basis that holds true to this day. The confusion stemmed from another type of velociraptor that was more akin to a rabid chicken. They're both existed (to the best of our knowledge) and the naysayers have long been dispelled on the topic.

    • @brainflash1
      @brainflash1 6 лет назад +20

      It's not another type of velocirapter. The velociraptor species was still only slightly taller than a foot. The only types of raptors that came close to the height of humans were the Achillobator and the Utahraptor, and they weren't even in the same family.

    • @ToaArcan

    To be fair Ben, more evidence suggests Tyrannosaurus was just as much built to be a badass hunter as well as a scavenger due to its forward facing eagle eyes and uber-powered jaws whose bite marks have been found on other fossil bones, even other Tyrannosaurs. The whole "scavenger only" shtick was mostly put out by Jack Horner while other paleontologists have since found strong evidence to the contrary.

    • @BrownSofaGamer
      @BrownSofaGamer 6 лет назад +25

      Did John Horner had a dislike towards the T-Rex? (Which seems odd to say given it's been dead fr millions of years) but If I recall correctly he wasnown to be dismissive about the T-Rex in general.
      Really I never cared much if it was a predator or scavanger, just what was it's arms intended for! Were they to help push the T-rex of ground? Or just useless for the adult stage of it's life?

    • @alexkogan9755
      @alexkogan9755 6 лет назад +14

      World Of Thought The arms apparently were pretty muscular. As for what their use was, that's still up for debate. For all we know they could've worked like how you just described. As to why they're small I think it's an evolutionary result of T.rex getting more use out of its massive skull and as a result the arms shrunk to balance the weight of the animal, whereas other dinosaurs like Allosaurus had smaller skulls and used their arms more. I cannot speak on Horner's apparent dismissiveness of T.rex considering the amount of work he's put in the past but I would say it's partly excessive bias on his part.

    • @solanceDarkMOW
      @solanceDarkMOW 6 лет назад +15

      well, the scavenger aspect is certainly compelling, but most people seem to conflate the powerful jaws with devastating high-speed hunter. In many cases, the crushing jaws can work just as well for tearing flesh from dead things as killing living things and the adult T-rex's mass and estimated metabolism suggest that it was an especially active hunter, though it certainly could be in part. The utmost of conclusions to draw from any such discussion is that the paleontological community is by no means united and thus far we have very little that is concrete fact, so much of what we think is based on interperetations of the evidence, for which there can be more than one.

      I remember how in Operation Genesis the fights would have specific death animations depending on who's fighting whom. A battle between a T-Rex and a Triceratops would end differently from a fight between a Rex and a Spinosaurus.

      @boush1177 6 лет назад +63

      MrProthall: Sorry but you are wrong, Operation Genesis had many more features not included in this new one. Evolution is literally just a devolution of Operation Genesis with better graphics. The only people who can call Genesis "literally the same game" are those who have never played it. Just to name a few things Genesis has and Evolution doesn't:
      - No-Park mode where you could just build dinosaurs and watch them live their lives without having to build the park and bother with humans. Nothing like this exists in Evolution, you have one island (or more accurately a quarter of an island) with infinite money but even in that one you must build a park.
      - Customizable islands. You could pick your own entire island and fill it and customize it however you wish, you could build on the entire island. Nothing like this exists in Evolution, you are given a few islands from the movies and you can only build on small parts of the island, the rest of the island is forever off-limits.
      - The dinosaurs had some sort of pack/herd behavior and actually roamed together. The predators could also hunt in groups if multiple ones happened to be hungry or in Hunt mode at the same time (except the big ones which are all solitary and fight each other).
      - The goats (and cows) had actual AI in Genesis and they could be seen roaming around and playing with each other/herbivore dinos. They would also run away when afraid of predators. In Evolution the goats have none of this.
      - Herbivores could actually escape predators. In Evolution when a predator is close enough to a non-combat herbivore the herbivore is already dead, it will stand still and an animation will play for the predator killing it, the herbivore can never escape this situation. In Genesis the herbivores could actually escape from predators if they were fast enough. This is literally a basic animal feature that lacks in Evolution. The non-combat herbivores are not animals with self-preservation but instead just glorified snacks. This ignores basic reality because in nature predators fail at hunting quite often.
      - In Genesis low health dinos would usually prioritize running away rather than fighting. In Evolution the dinos will literally self-destroy themselves by not caring about how much health they have and entering fights even if they have 1% health.
      - In Genesis the dinosaurs needed to sleep. No such thing at all in Evolution.
      - Park visitors were individuals. In Genesis they all had some pre-given names (you could also give them your own names if you mess with the files), they all had personal needs like hunger, tiredness, etc. and you could see what they think of your park by clicking them. The visitors will like the park if their needs are sated but will complain if your park is too dirty, if they cannot watch any dinosaurs, and so on. There were also a few types of visitors in the park like herbivore/predator fans, those who want to see dinosaurs kill each other, and nerds who complain if your park is not authentic. In Evolution they are just a mass of pixels that do not have any needs or individuality, like Yahtzee said.
      - In Genesis the predator dinos acted like actual real animals and did not kill herbivores just for the hell of it, only when they were hungry or their Hunt meter (separate from Hunger) got high. In Evolution they will murder herbivores for literally no reason. The only predator acting this way should be the Indominus Rex because of plot reasons but instead all predator dinos act this way and the Indominus has nothing special. This is not how animals work!
      Genesis was not a perfect game by any means and it had some problems of its own, but it was NOT the same game as Evolution since it had a lot more features than Evolution. Do I need to go on? I think I already made my point clear, though.

      No, they had a dino that was called Velociraptor at the time, but was renamed because of confusion. They DID use real dinos, just not quite the one we thought. There's youtube vids explaining it. There IS a velociraptor chicken-saur, but the JP raptor is now called something with a D, can't recall the whole name.

    Somebody should make a Jurassic Park game that is a reverse management sim. You start out with a perfectly functional park, then spies/terrorists/foreign governments start doing things in the park that make the dinosaurs escape and the game is to make as much money as you can before the place is shut down, frantically averting PR disasters as fast as they arrive and covering up particularly bad incidents with bribes and military contracts that might end up making things worse later on.

    I'm just glad they made it like Genesis.Overall it wasn't a bad game, the islands provided a good challenge on each and then rewarded you after you completed them with a new Dino or something. Can get a bit repetitive after awhile, though. If they add a little more to it every now and then, the game should quite nice (or a least a little more interesting) in like a half a year to a year. They already added a new Dino pack (for free) so hopefully they're not completely done yet. I miss random island generation, too. They really gave genesis a unique feel to it and gave it replay value. Oh, well. 8.8 I guess....

      I dunno, one of the best things about Genesis was the dino ai, with which this game seems to be severely lacking. Instead of socializing in herds and following an alpha, they just seem to fuck around in this new game. In Genesis, carnivores wouldn't bother herbivores unless they were hungry or needed to satisfy their hunting instinct, whereas Yahtzee pointed out they're just going to go apeshit on anything they see for no reason in Evolution. Their needs were much more complex too, and you would even have to take things into account like avoiding making dino exhibits under the flight path of the visitor helicopter, since the noise stresses them out. Even the visitors were unique and each had their own name, hometown, needs, and what they wanted from the park (herbivores playing, carnos fighting, etc). Though there were less dinos and only like five different character models for the visitors, JPOG just felt so much more alive.

      Yes, allow me to explain. To unlock dinos, you must unlock islands. To unlock islands, you must get the current island you are on to three stars through dinos and good park facility's. You can unlock dinos through special goals as well. Once you have all the dinos, what you can do is go an island with infinite money and well, create a giant dinosaur gladiator pit. That's what I did :P Of course the quest people will complain on all the other islands and like Yahtzee said, got sit around to get that money on all the other islands.(Also, to unlock the infinite money island you have to get five stars on I think the first island.) It's fun, plus you can mess with genetics to make them stronger or have more health. The indoraptor and indinomus rex are in the game, as well.

  • @oshkeet

    Funnily enough "carnivores are just pricks" is a documented zoo phenomenon, even among well-cared for and well-fed animals. Prey who don't/can't run away but also don't try to fight back short circuit some expectation center of a newly-introduced carnivore's brains and they'll go on a kill spree if allowed, often without eating the kill. Animals that hop between exhibits (local rabbits and vermin, peacocks and gamefowl in smaller parks, etc.) are the usual victims, though the carnivore usually grows out of it when the other prey animals catch on Over There is not a safe place and stop encouraging them.

However, the dinosaur fighting isn't very good, and the genetic modification system i feel was sorely underdeveloped( they don't need to choose between accuracy to rl or to the movies) and also no modding is a serious constraint. Modding the original jpog was an underhanded business until very recently, because now there is a tool to put new models into the game now.

  • @MagicalFruitBasket
    @MagicalFruitBasket 6 лет назад +3

    Somehow I knew preemptively this was going to include whining about current knowledge of dinosaurs but I was wrongly optimistic and clicked anyways.
    The original Jurassic Park helped popularize new knowledge on dinosaurs and ignoring that aspect of the movies is a fatal flaw of it's sequels. It's mindless entertainment, nothing else. The original JP had an educational value to it and now that dinosaurs have gotten some new skin patterns JP fans very ironically started losing their shit.
    Science said "hey dinosaurs are actually more like birds" and everyone was fine with it. Suddenly they also comment "hey dinosaurs are actually even MORE like birds" and that makes people angry.
    This is particularly odd considering dinosaurs have gone through a much more drastic during the dinosaur renaissance that completely changed the way we know they walked and stood, drastically altering their silhouette as we'd once perceived it. This wasn't a simple change, the discovery of deinonychus lead to entirely reshaping the animals from saurian kangaroos to tail and tooth bearing ostriches and cassowaries. And yet, the release of JP made this change welcoming.
    However when the same science that made JP so unique merely added a new coat of paint to those same bird-like reptiles the movie portrayed it seemed to attract a whole heap of unwarranted backlash from the JP fan community.
    Go fuck yourselves.

      I played JPOG, and while it was tycoon, Evolution has the same aspect but it is far more challenging. The dinos require far more to control them and the raptor can just f**k off because nothing makes them happy or keeps them confined. But seriously I loved OG and while I was thrilled to have played it Evo needed to happen to provide an new age challenge. I just wish someone would do a remake of the original SNES Jurassic Park. It would be great to have a more personal view of dinosaurs and I do not mean Dino Crisis for f**k sake...I mean a remodeled version with a open world style, objective based RPG Jurassic Park. I miss the days when graphics made no difference to us and it was about the experience.

      Yes, Operation Genesis did a lot of things that this game lacks. I made a list of some examples in another comment and I will copy-paste that here. Keep in mind this is not even a full list, I left out some small details.
      - In Genesis the dinosaurs had some sort of pack/herd behavior and actually roamed together.

    It like what Yahtzee said in his Spore Review. "Carnivores have to kill everyone. Herbivores have to die a lot."

    There’s a demo of the Trex breakout scene from the first movie. Not sure which engine or when it was. It’s so short, and yet it’s concept does deliver.

    Scientists tend to be full of themselves. If anything they should be thankful to Jurassic Park/World as they keep dinosaurs and paleontology in the mainstream. It was thanks to JP1 that there was a big dino craze, many of us bought books and went to museums to learn about the real life dinos.

      Paleontologists tend to be incredibly spiteful and petty people as far as the scientific community goes. It's fiercely competitive for whatever reason.

      There just isn't that much evidence in palaeontology which leads to there being more leeway to have different interpretations on what the animal was/looked like/did/etc.

      We only know Pachycephalosaurus from its skull, we have to fill out the rest to the body with what its relatives or juveniles looked like. T-rex skin is another example, we don't have very many examples of its skin, most are very small and some come from T-rex relatives.

      I'm not denying that, fossils definitely change our understanding of a certain group's evolution. My point was to work in tandem with yours as individual fossils may change our understanding however there are instances where different interpretations arise because there aren't that many fossils to examine.

    I would like to see a Jurassic Park game where you: use the park's dinosaurs to assassinate people like Hitman and passing the deaths off as park accidents while simultaneously trying to cover up the danger/frequency of park accidents (both yours and real ones).

    Also, it's time for a bit of entertaining education!
    The small velociraptor that paleontologists talk about is a breed from way over in Asia. The velociraptor in Jurassic Park, you'll note, was excavated in Montanna. Why, you ask? Because Michael Crichton and Steven Spielberg took a naming classification liberty. There's a dinosaur that was, around the time of the book's publication, referred to in certain studies as a species of velociraptor. The true name of this dino is deinonychus, "terrible claw." Crichton used velociraptor as its main name instead because it sounded scarier, but the novel is pretty clear about which "raptor" is actually being used in the book, if you pay attention to the details.
    Jurassic World Evolution is weird in this respect: it has you excavate velociraptor fossils from Asia, and its data entries handwave this away by saying they're just engineered bigger than normal. It also includes deinonychus as a separate dinosaur. This is a BIT silly, because we're basically saying now that Hammond and the Jurassic World big-wigs all decided to make the velociraptor MORE DANGEROUS, INTENTIONALLY, causing their worst problems in a very direct way.
    It makes more sense to just accept that Crichton used "velociraptor" to refer to "deinonychus" and leave it at that.
    As for the "Rex was a scavenger" theory, that was a bit of naysaying, though I should mention that Jack Horner only brought up the theory as a caution not to assume things without evidence, rather than seriously pushing it. It was actually a theory that existed before he drew attention back to it.
    If y'all want to learn yourselves some dino info in a way that is both more up-to-date than these books and franchise movies tied to early-nineties paleontology and quite engaging, I recommend "The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs: A New History of a Lost World" by Steve Brusatte. The guy knows how to write an entertaining read, even when it's chiefly and info dump, and there's a lot of anecdotes about past paleontology adventures that are genuinely entertaining to read about to go with the "history of dinosaurs" stuff.
