    Excellent tutorial.....ordering the parts and will attempt this fun project. Wish me luck, lol. Can't be any worse than when I rebuilt the head. Btw, mixing equal parts of ATF/Acetone and applying to the joints will loosen them up, especially if applied the day/night before! The acetone is the carrying agent for the ATF to get deep into the joint, therefore loosening everything up. Has never failed me on the most difficult jobs.

      Thanks for sharing this info buddy. I will definitely have it in mind next time. Need to buy a drum of acetone as I don't have any in my garage. This may work great for loosening old diesel glow/heater plugs

      @@TheKeenMechanic You should be able to purchase it in a U.S. quart size and yes, perfect to use on glow plugs. I've used it to remove O2 sensors and you know how stubborn those are!

    Thanks for the video! Getting ready to replace my center link and tie rods on a 2002 E39 540i/6 sport. Question: Can the center link be removed by only disconnecting the pitman arm from the center link and not the steering box? Thank you,

    • @TheKeenMechanic
      @TheKeenMechanic  8 месяцев назад

      You don't need to remove the steering box, just disconnect the centre assembly from the box🤝🏻

      @@TheKeenMechanic Thank your for your reply. I know the steering box doesn't need to be removed for the center link replacement.. Couldn't you have just disconnect the pitman arm from the center link and not from the steering box for the center link removal? Just wasn't sure why you removed the pitman arm from the steering box.

      @@raymondtrottier8589 It will be easier to remove the centre rod assembly with the pitman arm itself. The ball joint are very hard to break loose. Try and see what works best for you🤝🏻

      Hi buddy, I am glad you found it helpful.
      It could be an awkward job if the nuts and threads are rusty.
      Very easy if you have a car lift, but unfortunately most of us don't have this luxury:)

    I wished you had an install video. The car is done. I just have the tie rod ends to fasten to the steering knuckle. I think I made an error and tightened down on tie rod idler and pitman ball joints before double checking that the steering wheel was centered. To remove anything now is impossible without destroying the ball joint sleeves. I guess that’s why they made tie rod ends adjustable. Looking forward to you getting back to your BMW videos. We don’t have Renaults here in the US, not to mention their F1 team is lousy. Not sure if you’re a Formula 1 fan or not. My wife got me into it.

      Don't panic buddy. You will be able to do all the adjustments from the inner track rod ends and outer ends. All joints have ball joints on the pitman arm and the other side too. I have some BMW content coming soon and announcement to make but can't share for another week or so🤝
      I do all sorts of stuff and don't limit the content with BMWs only. I love Chainsaws, tools and anything that had an engine in it😊

      @@TheKeenMechanic no, I screwed up. The steering wheel was fine. I didn’t think to mark the pitman because it came down with the subframe. I put the pitman on at a wrong angle. The left side tie rod end will not go into the steering knuckle. It’s too close to the tire and it’s already screwed in all the way up the tie rod. I need to get the pitman off and turn it to the right a few teeth to move the left side tie rod end from the tire. Miserable. Even in your video it was not easy, no less trying to do it with out damaging anything.
      I’ve been posting about your channel on Facebook. Not sure if viewership has gone up. I joined new BMW groups last night and will post the channel there this evening when I get home. Take care

      @@paperandmedals8316 Oh, I know what you mean buddy. I didn't understand it the 1st time. Yes, that pitman arm was a nightmare to slide of the steering box teeth as in my case they were rusty too. I wonder if there is some sort of tool you can get or even some sort of puller that you can modify to get it out easier? I did damage the coating on mine too a tiny bit and then decided to respray it. Thanks for the shout out bud, it is always appreciated, not too many people have done that for me so I can only say massive THANK YOU🤜🤛
