I'll tell you this, Nellie was wrong. It has nothing to do with the fast pace of life for riding on the train. The issue is is that New York and Harlem in New in New York City and general they're just very literate people so the reason why hip-hop sounded like that is because it came clearly from spoken word. spoken word poetry and of the beatniks and all that type of thing in the Greenwich Village and the West Village in Harlem in Brooklyn and you know in Midtown in Columbia University all of that is what made Hip Hop New York hip-hop sound the way it did. That's why I Philadelphia Hip Hop was similar. Because on the East Coast people are highly literal and they are very literate. In the midwest I don't know if those people are as literal or illiterate so lyricism may not have meant that much to them because they were just relaxing like you said writing in their car
@@broncomcbane6382 I'm going to have to respectfully disagree on the literacy piece. That Midwest vibe has its own flavor, but linguistics and literacy are not the same. Respect to the elements and origins of hip hop, it was, by its very nature, bound to grow. It couldn't just be a New York thing because it was too far reaching. Hip hop is the antiphony (call & response) of its generation, and to that end, Nelly's view is valid. I appreciate Lyte being able to receive it in the way that she did. Makes for good forum.
@@broncomcbane6382 A lot of NY rappers aren't even literate goofy 🤦🏿♂️
“That’s still not an excuse to say nothing” right on Lyte ✊🏾💯
💪🏿💯
Down south want to hear the beat pound the speaker. East coast beats are ugh meh at best.
she said nothing, what is she talking about
Exactly! Because that NY rap mess is overrated and boring. Only one I still like is Busta.
@@jamesjones4309 so why call it rap music if all you care about are the beats? Lol
MC Lyte was a mega force in rap! She was smooth and strong at the same time👏🏾👏🏾

“That’s still no excuse to say nothing” 😮💨😮💨📢
I didn't quite get that comment?
@@cliftonconnor9389 Some of these new rap songs don't have a story or a meaning behind them. The rappers are essentially saying nothing (if you can decipher what they say).
@@cliftonconnor9389 Todays artist have no substance in their music. All the songs are about the same ole nothing (drugs, money, violence, sex) Not many rappers today can make a Brenda’s got a baby, Dear Momma, It’s like a jungle sometimes, Poor Georgie etc. Songs today lack meaning. Even the R&B is trash. They don’t make love songs anymore, they’re not saying nothing and they can’t hardly sing.
Thanks, I get what she meant now. R&B is the same. I was listening to Keith Sweat yesterday, 'How Deep is Your Love', and my thought was he would be the king of R&B today. I won't even bring up Luther Vandrose.
@@cliftonconnor9389 We still waiting on another Luther. They tried to give Ruben Studdard and even Jaheim the title, but there will never be another Luther 🕊️
“You can still find something to say”that alone was a very powerful message!! ❤❤❤❤
Yeah I thought that was interesting. I don't listen to much current music nowadays but I imagine she's referring to "mumble rap?"
@@joannejoanne7816 nelly was defending different regions. She did what a lot of ny rappers do and not respect the south as having something to say. Remember Andre 3000's speech about the south having something to say. She doesnt listen to anything and judges from outside the culture at this point. hopefully in-context she doesnt sound so wack. hopefully...
It's southern rappers who do have something to say but the main media doesn't want to hear it
@@e66iuwack? she already a legend. 🤷🏿♂️
@@smarke76 legend or not (im a fan of Mc Lyte for the record), it is wack as fuck to tune out an entire coast because they sound different or have different sensibilities when it comes to hip hop. It the same wack ass xenophobia that makes "oldheads" diss the younger gen as "not saying nothing." Just because you're a legend it doesn't exempt you from wackness. it just means you have a lot more "riders" who won't hop off when you get to talking nonsensical (i.e. R. Kelly, Bill Cosby, Kanye West). it doesn't make you less of a legend, only shows that wackness and legendary statuses are not mutually exclusive.
Years ago, I met her at a club. I was afraid to bother her by invading her space with my excitement. Her PR person saw me , called me over, and asked "would you like to meet MCLYTE" I almost fainted. On everything, She, MCLYTE, is one of the kindest people I have ever met. You can feel her positive energy. ❤❤❤
My husband met her before and he said the same thing. He also said she is even more beautiful in person. 😅
Me, my sister, and friends were hanging out at a corner pay phone when MC lyte got out and asked us for directions. You’re right she’s the sweetest and kindest person you’ll ever meet.
MC Lyte will always be one of the greatest MC's.... Shout out to Nelly as well, so much creativity within us as individuals. 💯🌄

That explanation was so on point!!🙏🏿🖤💯
But sounds like Nelly was the genius 🤔
Actually she’s saying what Nelly broke down to her.
it’s a blessing to have a rap pioneer drop gems to the masses about the importance of being responsible for your words.
"I Still Don't Think That's An Excuse To Say Nothing..." THAT PART! 💥
I am proud of her because she represents my generation to the fullest . We didn't play with this music because it was our place of expression to be taken seriously.
Right
Mannn bring back those days!!! We need relief!!!
BIG FACTS!
Hell yeah...I'm a 80s child. My older bro were friends with LL, GMaster Flash n em, Fat Boys I spent a lot of time around KRS1 n Scott LaRoc. We from the time when "Fight The Power" was the movement n we all had em African/Black Fist medallions. Wearing Sergio Tachino sweats Kangol hats, Gazelle frames. Pumas/Adidas. Those were the days. Remembered making them mixtapes off the radio 105WBLS/92KTU. Then the mixtapes came out with Kid Capri, DJ SnS n the Homicide Squad, DJ Doo Wop etc. Man I could go in on this subject. Then they started the Reggae/HipHop mixed when Shabba did that colab with BDP, then it was Super Cat n Heavy D.
We who? Plenty of stupid fun and goofy songs in your generation and every generation for that matter. You don't speak for everyone.
I’ll always remember the day me, my sister and friends were chilling at the corner payphone and MC Lyte pulled up in a dope SUV, got out with her crew and asked us for directions. I was so honored because we were teenagers. That was at the height of her career.

I love MC Lyte. I was so upset she was not on Grammys hip hop tribute. She is my all time favorite 😍
Exactly, they did a lot of people dirty... That started this hip hop😊
LL Cool J said that the performance was just the beginning and that not everyone would be there.
She was on the mic as the speaker.
Do you know how many ppl they’d have to tribute?!?! Somebody’s bound to be slighted
yes, of course, some have to be left out, there are many but, there should have been some type of order. certain ones should have been in the first tribute and others could have been placed in the second tribute (if that's to come). mc lyte was a trailblazer, a first responder (especially when it comes to female rappers). she should not be in the second to come tribute. now, if they're gonna do something extra special to display that " saved the best for last" moment.... then, ok🤷 but if not, she absolutely deserved to be and should have been in this tribute. if "this is just the beginning" like l l cool j said, mc lyte IS one of the BEGINNINGs of this game and should have been recognized as such. she was a starter, she was in the first rowe, not the second. 🎤
💐💐💐💐
ps - what nelly said makes total sense! 🤷
Absolutely right, depends on where you’re from , it’s the attitude you write!
Nelly understands because he was viewed the exact same way when he was popping.
