Pinna Park (Super Mario Sunshine) sight-read by Tom Brier

- The key of D isn't the easiest for him to read (ragtime is rarely in "sharp" keys), but it's not bad, is it? The sheet music that Tom is reading here was made by Mitch Norris -- / wheelmanmitch -- with just some coaching from me. I don't think Mitch has it on any of his own web space yet so here's a link to it from mine: www.keeper1st.c...
This was at the May 2013 meeting of the Mother Lode Ragtime Society as things wrapped up for the night. I raised my arm/camera high so that people could leave without walking into the shot, as they had got up to leave, but they remained standing there until Tom finally finished (after several repeats, a made-up interlude, another repeat, and a made-up ending). This is what prompted our friend Julia to say sarcastically, "Next time you should play the LONG version!"
Some Japanese text follows for the sake of searches.
『ピンナパーク』 スーパーマリオサンシャイン ピアノ
"D isn't easiest for him to read. Beginning is really, really weird"
- Proceeds to lay down the best rendition of this track I've ever heard.
"It's VERY odd!"
Yak Yo! Except for the original ofc
Yep, that's what he does. Your comment sums it up nicely
@@realBlueMoonMusic I think I like this about as much. This isn't as tight as a final composition with the intended instrumentals but the little personal touches add something. It's a tradeoff.
This rendition could easily be in a Super Mario Sunshine remaster with orchestrated music to make the areas feel more alive!
I never realised how many Mario and Nintendo songs really fit into the ragtime category.
All of them if you're Tom Brier xD
Another example?
@@HelderGriff smw and yis his island athletic theme, cooking mama, cool cool mountain, horse race from mm & oot, others but he’s covered all of these and more
@@arbbr9397 okay thanks!
It's because Kondo actually used old ragtime as inspiration to compose those tunes and created a whole genre of video game music. It's actually incredible because he's made sure through Mario and other games that this ragtime feel will be remembered even when most people don't know the original tunes.
The fact that this man has prolly never played Mario sunshine, let alone ever hear this song is crazy. He plays it literally perfectly. Fuckin legend
It's uncanny how perfectly he nails every one of these having never experienced the originals
camera guy: "let me give you a warning at the intro"
Tom Brier : (in his head) I got this shit
I've f*cking laugh
He sight reads better than I read out loud... meaning he can play piano better than I can speak.
El Roulette that's a wild perspective. Never thought of that.
He can play piano better than I can breathe
sadly he too now plays piano better than he can speak
@@SirAwesomePerson Another item to add to the list of "Reasons I'm going to Burn in Hell:"
-I laughed at that.
@@SirAwesomePerson :(
You can see him smiling throughout. He loves it so awesome
Dude everyone who watched this video smiled throughout, you can't not.
This is a detail I often miss since I usually just listen, but it makes the videos all the more enjoyable!

A decade later and this is still one of the greatest piano renditions of any Mario song on this website.
My personal favorites, this and Birabuto Kingdom!
Toms Birabuto is goated. Shout out to faster than all and snow mountain (slider) too
Sure thing sunshinebot, whatever makes you sleep easy at night
I believe that slight discord in tone is meant to evoke the tones of a carnival calliope. They are rarely in tune.
Yes it makes it sound very genuine
Even more so when played on a piano of this type, brings a certain lively ness to it
yeah but join the calliope discord
For those of you who don't know, sight reading means it's his first time seeing this sheet of music. This was truly exceptional.
That is not what sight reading means.
@@vgmastercleveland maybe not the precise definition, but certainly what happened in this video.
@Big Shoes yeah, in band I sight read new music and we see how well we can play it.
What kind of sorry soul do you have to be to dislike this? It's a happy, talented man dominating a song he's never even heard, and enjoying every moment of it! This is the meaning of life people
Probly because of mistakes
Not meaning that i would dislike this ever.
They missed the button
They are from Australia
Russian hatebots.
They are just jealous of his talent!
I enjoy the small piano on top of the piano
Its a glockenspiel
Floris Kolder it is no glockenspiel it is a piano
Did you mean "on top of the _big_ piano"?
It's for his midget brother.
@@FlorissMusic you have opened the eyes to a keyboard glockenspiel.
He doesn’t even know if he’s going to enjoy the song before he plays, him beginning to potentially appreciate the music as he plays is so cool.
A bit like us mortals reading a book - we experience the story as we read, just like him playing!
Tom is an absolute treasure. This is a cruel world we live in.
Mario Sunshine is still my favorite game ever made. This makes it sound like you're actually there. Surprisingly this is one I don't remember watching back then. The interludes between the main sections and the end are so cool. That's all original and not from the game.
This is the most incredible rendition of Pinna Park on piano ever. With one run through of the sheet music, Tom was able to completely transcend the original piece
I've been coming back off and on over the years to listen to Tom Brier play some of these songs, and I've come to the decision that when he was playing, he was simply just too good for RUclips.
I've listened to many youtubers play songs like these on the piano, and even among the best, no one can do what Tom did, just reading blind, and embellishing and really just improving upon the song as he went. Yeah there were mistakes here and there, but it was his first time playing and he's really just goofing off and playing for the fun of it, too. I've really seen no one on youtube that's even in his league. He's just so much fun to watch. When I know a song very well and he plays it for the first time, every embellishment and change me makes on the fly makes me laugh in marvel at his talent.
If pinna park was a real place and he was playing this here I would go just to watch him play, this is amazing.
They should have this recording on loop there.
Why is this man not famous!!!!!!
Idk

I’ve learned a lot of ragtime over the years. Mainly Joplin. This song is extremely difficult and will leave your forearms on fire! Tom is nothing short of incredible
That part at around 4:03 brought a tear to my eye. I don't even know this song. Only a pro could play it like that, even though few notes were played.
I am addicted. Send help please, this is the only song I’ve heard in 36 hours
This tune shows Koji Kondo's creative and genius musical mind. Plus Tom's amazing talent!
This tune was composed by Shinobu Tanaka. She worked on the Super Mario Sunshine soundtrack with Koji Kondo!
While Kondo did work on Sunshine, it's well known he did *NOT* write this composition. That was Shinobu Nagata. (maiden name "Tanaka")
I wonder if anybody from Nintendo has heard these renditions. Absolutely outstanding piano playing from Tom.
Two things...
1: This guy is the Chuck Norris of piano interpretations.
2: How the hell hasn't this video reached the 1 million views yet? This is pure gold!
2. Society lacks class and inteligence nowadays, they rather watch a let's play video about some brain damaged shouting kid then see an actual master at work on a piano.
I miss this man
Yes, I've been wanting to transcribe that piece for a few years now but haven't gotten around to it yet! It's pretty short, but of course Tom can take a short piece and play it for several minutes in many ways... or even make up accompanying strains like he did with Minato Mura.
You can hear the soul of this man here. Pure joy and laughter. 2:32
I'm sighing in nostalgia right now. I remember I'd play this game when I was young, during the long process of a parental divorce. This game and paper mario were my escapes. I think, even at 27 years old, I still play video games so I can escape from reality.
Same almost 28 just hooked up the game cube and went to pina Park on supermario Sunshine
Same but much older, lol
Me too. This and Sonic Adventure 2 were my escapes.
People that can do this just amaze me. Holy crap, he turned 3 sheets of music into a beautiful 6-minute-long masterpiece.
if i walked into a store and heard someone playing this on a piano, i would fucking freak out
I'd buy him dinner and thank him for being alive
In French Brier means Shining. That's appropriate for him.
God damn, that ending gave me goosebumps. Going from everything being happy-go-lucky to an epic saga, slowly pulling us out of our daydream of a distant memory. A longing for the greatest day of your life, and coming to terms with the bittersweet reality that everything must come to an end.
One of my favorite video game songs and he plays it so well. Been coming back to this video over and over for the past 3 years.
Man I'm fucking crying right now! I've listened to Tom's rendition of Pinna Park countless times and it's one of my favorites, but what made me come back here just now was listening to a "continued by AI" rendition of the Bob-omb Battlefield theme which was actually quite good. It played the theme the way it's normally played but then began "improvising" and it reminded me of something that Tom would do. Miss him so much!
5:00 to the end. not gonna lie. I teared up a bit at that slightly slower portion of pinna park. Beautiful.
Well, technically the sheet music doesn't end there, as it has a Dal Capo instruction ("From the Beginning", though Tom chooses to skip the 8-bar intro and repeats from where the main theme really begins). Really impressive is his sight-read of Minato Mura from the One Piece anime, where he gets to the end of the piece, but then makes up new strains off the top of his head to flesh it out into a full-length rag!
This guy can sight read music better than I can sight read books
this i think might be my favorite of Tom's renditions of video game music. given his current condition, the palpable joy he emits playing this piece is enough to make me tear up.
Ive been coming back to this video for the better part of 8 years 👏 🙌 always great.
Get better Tom, we love you!
Definitely one of Tom's best renditions. This song matches him perfectly. :D

+Koopa Team Hi man!
I swear, there's nothing this guy can't play. He has magic fingers :)
heh...
I love that you can tell he enjoys this piece. It really was a great selection to give him.
This is my favorite track in the game, I keep coming back to this and reminiscing of good times.
How is someone so confident in the bass notes being played that you don't physically look down at your hands?!?! Amazing.
Well, no proficient musician needs to look at his/her hand on any instrument.
One of the coolest guys on earth, ever!
The sound this very specific piano creates is PERFECT for this song!
if i say ive spent like two or 3 hours a day listening and watching to toms videos from last year til now i didnt exagerated even a bit . man tom is the most amazing thing ive ever found in my life. i enjoy every bit of his works and sightreads - im trying to buy a digital piano and im saving money for it - i was a former pianist - with toms videos im feeling ive never played the piano that i liked in the past ever . specialy this peice is so happy and full of joy that i listen to it serveral times every single day and i just dont get tired or bored of it. make a full recovery man i believe in you.
This is still one of my favorite plays by Tom, God bless him.
Just rewatching this. From 5:44 to the end is so good. I love that chord progression!

Revisiting this classic as Super Mario Sunshine is ported onto the Switch. I hope you are doing well Tom!
this is my favorite song that tom has played, but now watching it makes me sad that he is unable to enjoy his favorite past time like he used to. tom i know you'll never read this, but i hope you will one day be able to play piano again; even if you can't play like this, just doing the thing you love will help you recover. good luck buddy

Man the way this legend slays the track always gets me
of all of these keeper and tom videos this one is my absolute favorite. maybe because in the game its not an important stage and the music is relatively generic-sounding theme park music, but tom's spin on it is just so passionate and varied with rhythm and tempo changes and just so damn well performed; i cannot get enough of it
i love how Nintendo not only makes really fun games to play, but also really fun music to play as well, and listen too. the chuckle at the middle makes me smile. i learned the Boss theme song from mario sunshine and i have so much fun playing it.
'nyam bab baba bab!'
Tom Brier is such a good pianist. This one sounds so complex
Man, that was great.
This one in particular suits him very well. Funny I was just playing this game recently, and I've played the game a lot when it came out, so this tune is particularly stuck in my head, so having Tom read it was great, love when he does the broken octaves on the left hand and then his made up ending.
I've noticed this one was quite requested before, but finally seeing it in my subscription box made my night.
Yep I'm one of the few who requested it XD
@@ZeldaFan940 you did it on the comments section?
It's amazing how he can just play as he reads.
This sounds exceptionally like the original because I'm pretty sure it's the same instrument used in the actual song.

The game uses MIDI files
but if it were to have an HD soundtrack remake I imagine this piano would be used

I love it! brings me back a lot of memories :')
I love these Nintendo videos so much! Just listening played on a piano just brightens my entire day. Especially during times when Tom would smile and laugh when another verse came along, it reminds me that video game music and just music in general can bring people together, no matter where they are from. I can feel the heart and passion Tom puts into his music, and its an incredible feeling. Thank for revisiting my favorite childhood memories, and for making such fantastic music!
that laugh at 2:33 is so jolly haha >~

I feel like whenever his friends want to show him a song, they'd just hand him sheet music and he'd play it live with a unique rendition to hear it. Absolute legend.
Yep, exactly right. Whenever I composed a new piece, I'd give it to him to play, then wonder, "Why didn't I write it like that?"

Tom should have given a warning that his rendition would be so epic. Even so, I don't think anyone could have been prepared for THAT.
I always love seeing this guy play these types of songs from Mario games 😂
We all loved seeing him play anything!

"Finally"? The last one before this was less than a week ago, where he turns the Angry Birds theme into a nine-minute silent-movie soundtrack). If you only watch the game music videos, though, you're missing out. All the music on this channel is in the same style as the game tunes presented here (I post the game tunes not because they're from games but because they are ragtime), so if you like this music, you'll like the rest too.
I was listening to the Super Mario Sunshine soundtrack while writing my thesis, and when it got to this song I thought it would be a great one to hear Tom play. Happy to find it here. He does a great job.
Beautiful! Thank you so much, Ron. I hope this video draws a crowd...Super Mario Sunshine is underrated!
