Yes, he was nearly killed on August 6th when his car was struck from behind at high speed by a large pickup while stopped at the end of a line of traffic on a freeway offramp. His car was crushed and it took more than an hour for crews to cut him out. He has what may be permanent brain damage. Currently, he is semi-aware and sometimes reacts to jokes spoken to him. He just turned a nice melody into a beautiful heart-felt musical journey while sightreading. That was a complex love song with ups and downs and coming to terms in the end.
Yeah, I think this one is a bit underrated. The change to minor he does, and the emotional journey he takes with the music, makes it one of my favorites of his sight readings.

That is correct. His hands are OK, but he can't really use his right arm/hand too much yet. He recently was able to touch his face with his right hand for the first time since the accident in August. He can move his left side quite well and has played a left-hand part on piano with visiting friends. He is bed-ridden/wheelchair-bound and cannot speak, though he is trying to re-learn how. He does understand everything you say to him though, so it's more a matter of physical movement that's been damaged; his thoughts, intelligence and personality all seem intact.

Yeah, he's just reading the score for the first time. He's been doing that for about 35 years, especially this kind of music. He reads the melody and sees enough of the left hand to note the chord sequence, then improvises the rest. That's why you see he isn't playing exactly what's on the pages.

I really should get around to arranging that one. I have a piano & organ MIDI file that someone sent me a few years ago. I could work out a piano solo from it. It's a neat piece.
Although I've played most of the games from his other videos and I've never played Super Mario Land 2 this video is my favorite. The tune ranges from upbeat dancing music to nostalgic melancholy and he really captures the emotion at each part.

I keep returning to this one. When the last part comes I just lean back, close my eyes and listen.
light up a joint.
It really is indescribably beautiful
I'm not a piano player, but I memorized all of the fingerings to this song, and putting it all together is SO FRIGGEN HARD. My total time is 9 minutes (still not 7) and I've been practicing this for about 1 full year now. Not to mention, he's SIGHT READING(edit: ***improvising) this. He's played a lot of rags in the past, but this is still (figuratively) unbelievable
Not to mention how much on-the-fly rearranging he is doing - waltz, minor key, etc. There are many videos of Tom just making up new music off the top of his head too.
@@Keeper1st my apologies, I will fact check myself next time. Although to be fair: they're both hard to truly appreciate/understand, for me at least
post a video!!!
@@rocknrollbabey3252 I had to do it on another channel. Still riddled with errors from exhaustion ruclips.net/video/k6e3t2H_a3M/видео.html
When I'm sad, I watch this video and feel better. Thanks Tom.
The most genius never stay with us long enough. We miss your playing, Tom. You changed many lives 🫡
He's still "with us". He'll never be able to play or speak much again, but with us he remains at least.
@@Keeper1st Yes, apologies, I didn’t mean it like that. I only meant it’s tragic he can’t make music anymore. But thank you for sharing what he has made with us.
2021's recommended list just improved!
trust me, you will be coming back to this man for a long time! the recommended list brought me here too bout a year ago lmao
I’m not sure why I come back to this particular video, it’s pretty nostalgic. And the history behind this channel and Tom is just unthinkable, he will always be considered my favorite pianist, and since he can’t really play anymore, it makes me want to get up and practice day and night! Thanks Mr. Brier.
i think i have never seen a more masterful interpretation of a piece of sheet music wherein the player becomes the song, and i think we shall never see its like again. i only found tom yesterday. learning his story after the fact is too much to process. this life is cruel. i hate it here
A little slice of heaven, each time we listen…
Thanks for sharing your talents and love of music with the world, Tom. My hope and prayer is for your healing, whether on this side of eternity or the next. Thanks for all the memories!
As a child I played Super Mario Land 2 many times. Hearing the ending music thrilled me and took me back in time. But hearing how Tom played it moved me even more, especially knowing what happened to him in 2016! I deeply hope with all my heart that Tom can get better and better. This composition is a gift that Tom wanted to give us and every now and then I feel it and am moved! Thanks Tom ❤
this piece being played by tom brings me an indescribable feeling that makes me cry...
It doesn't matter if it comes from a video game... it's just so beautiful.
i will keep coming back to this
The fact that he manages this after just looking across the sheets once before this playthrough is mind boggling. Amazing dude!
i seriously miss you tom
This guy is a legend. Not many can do this with the flair and zest that he provides. Truly one-of-a-kind
I can’t stop watching this one song, it’s just too good. It sounds like life, its happy and jumpy, then it’s soft and romantic, then it’s up and marching, then it’s the end of the story. I’m so thankful that you were able to record this, and I’m sure you’ve been told this many times, but Tom is just an absolute work of art and talent. And the entire world needs to know his name for it. So thanks again for this amazing video!
I think it sounded better as a two-step.
Natural instinct 💪
At the end of the song I stood up from my seat and applauded too, Tom Brier is amazing!! I'm never tired of watching his videos
Brings me to tears most times I hear this 😭
Tom is so good that even when playing it wrong it sounds right
These videos bring me so much joy.
That's so beautiful. Is emotional.
So sad that Tom is held back by his physical body right now to do what his heart and spirit HAD to have been created to do, which is share the magic and awe inspiring power of music to the world.
I can’t wait to see him playing again, at any capacity ❤️
Has his condition improved at all?
@@JimboMarsh little by little
ruclips.net/video/8ruENxAWiXE/видео.html only footage I've found of tom playing post- accident.
I actually really liked it when he played it in two-step at the start. It felt like a song that would play during a bar fight in a cowboy movie
I'm writing this comment in the hopes that some time in the future someone will reply to it and i can read it again. Tom Brier may not anymore have the capacity to do this, but he made the most of it when he did. You could die tomorrow. You could die today. You can never know when it may happen. So always, always put in a little extra for the people you love and the people who love you.
When you look into your friend's eyes, it's a look that can break a heart. Always, if you have someone in your life worth that look, let them have it. Don't hide yourself, lest you remain hidden forever.
Tom broke our hearts because he filled them. Always fill hearts.
Every time I hear these songs of Tom's style, I'm reminded of how precious our relationships in this life really are.
May God bless Tom with as many friends as the internet can bring him. I still hold hope that he may be miraculously healed one day soon and wish the best for him and his caregivers, too.
What a truly heartfelt and wonderful comment.
♥
2:36 I really like that
this right here is one of the best videos on this site
Literally has me in tears nostalgia filled.... love filled tears! Every piece has me overwhelmed!
God bless Tom, such a tragedy 😔
Such an Inspirational man... so dedicated & talented!
The greatest ad lib you’ll ever see in your entire life!
@Diamond Crusher an accident has left him physically disabled. He lives with family now but to my understanding he’s not going to be able to recover to even half of his previous capabilities, with no signs of improvement.
@@radimakesmusic I man of his talent… it’s heartbreaking! The additional melodies he incorporates in to every rendition are mind blowing!
Love you tom.
Jesus this was amazing.
Excellent. There's a touch of introspection. Truly moving. Get well mr. Brier, i m wishing you all the best. Inspiring a person in your lifetime is a matter of chance and circumstances ; insping thousands is a pure gift.
so sad, but atleast we have these video's. I want to thank his friend for filming and uploading all of these.
take care
A true beautiful masterpiece and performance.
This is probably my favorite piece of his. If I were to choose one song to remember him by, it's this. I do pray he is able to recover.
Truly a legend at his craft. It breaks my heart to know what happened to him. I wish him a fast recovery. Whenever I watch him play, I always say to myself that I want to be just as good as him.
Jeez, throws a rag time spin on an amazing tune. This man is truly incredible and i hope one day he gets back to being able to play like this again.
By the time this video was over i was standing up in front of my computer
I love Mario, I've been playing the games for 25 years and the sense of nostalgia that i got from hearing this i will remember for the rest of my life. Talent like this is so rare and I'm sorry for everything that's transpired; I'm hopeful that he recovers one day and will continue watching as long as RUclips exists.
Listening in 2023.I keep coming back to this, o my god that was beautiful!
Every piece played by Tom makes me sad now because of his car accident. So heart breaking that he can’t play piano anymore. Never say never though! I pray he’ll regain his abilities soon
I want to cry I’m so happy
I can't help but grin whenever he smiles while playing this. Wish I could play like this myself, but I'm content just to watch and listen. :D ♪♫
These mario theme videos of Tom Brier make my bad days so much better
This man cannot only sightread a piece he’s never heard or played ever in his life and almost nail it first try, he can improvise
unbelievable what a fucking talent this was.
The man had an astounding gift and I’m grateful these videos were made to show him to the world.
I really should get around to arranging that one. I have a piano & organ MIDI file that someone sent me a few years ago. I could work out a piano solo from it. It's a neat piece.
Please do, and good luck
Tom is so good it brings tears to my eyes
I hope Tom is doing well, I read about the accident I live not too far from Oakdale, would love to meet the man.
Although I've played most of the games from his other videos and I've never played Super Mario Land 2 this video is my favorite. The tune ranges from upbeat dancing music to nostalgic melancholy and he really captures the emotion at each part.
His sight reading is insane. If I had a genie wish.
0:19 I actually cried. Holy crap. Nostalgia just annihilated me. Super Mario Land 2 was just so well crafted.
BizerkPixel 🤗🤗🤗
I Always feel so happy listening to Tom brier and his Brierized versions of songs. I hope he gets well soon. I'll be praying. have a great year!
Truly mesmerising. How Tom plays through the music adding his own interpretations along the way, taking a simple melody and making it a musical journey is just absolutely outstanding. It brings a different side to the music, one you wouldn't necessarily associate with such a piece. Many thanks for sharing such a great musical journey, and may many more continue!
Just came across his music and found out what happened, I genuinely am so upset
