I had heard the rumors and rumblings about things taking months. I decided what I wanted, gathered and filled out the paperwork, got it notarized and sent it in. Six days later, I had a Garand!
It all depends when & what you order. You order a more popular rifle like a service grade Springfield, after people get their tax returns, you're probably going to be waiting a while. Order a rack grade Winchester in December, you'll probably get it in a few days.
My old man got an M1 from the CMP back in the 1980s. I was a little kid then but I still remember how excited he was when the wooden box box came. We lived in a pretty anti-gun city where it later became illegal to get firearms shipped directly to your house. My old man is long dead (through no fault of the M1) but I still have a great time down at the range with it.
I have to use an out door feeding center for my pew babies that feed on 30-06. Luckily our local indoor center allows me to feed everything else we own.
It's illegal everywhere to have guns shipped to your door lmao unless you have an ffl on file for that property's address. Edit: Unless you have a c&r license. Otherwise, it's impossible.
Oh hey I'd just like to add that the CMP gauges and function fires everything that leaves the facility so you know you're getting a safe, functional rifle. Also they have physical locations in Anniston, AL, Talladega, AL and Port Clinton OH. You can walk out the same day with an M1 if you bring the 3 documents!
Not always. They may do it with service grade and better but the rack grade I bought wasn't gauged; or at the very least they didn't put the readings on the tag. Everything is still functional- the safety moves as it should that locks in position, the op-rod isn't damaged, spring looks good, it fires/cycles properly and is still acceptably accurate.
@@PoliticallyInsensitive Agree purely based on the description provided for rack grade. Rust and pitting and bore darkening are mentioned, so calling it "safe [and] functional" could be a bit misleading.
The rack grade they sent me had the most rusted out POS barrel I've ever seen. The piston head on the end of my op rod broke off when I was function testing the rifle myself. I was not impressed with what the CMP sent me, but have since fixed it up using a match grade barrel and a new old stock op rod and turned it into a pretty great rifle.

Great info that dispels a lot of fears, concerns, craziness, etc. about the CMP. I got my first Garand from them about 25 years ago and acquired many other guns from them over the years. I think the golden age of deals from the CMP are over but it’s still the best game in town for M1’s and just a great organization for promoting marksmanship!

I knew the cmp had a way of getting m1’s to people but I never knew how until you laid it out just like this. I will be doing my paperwork soon and getting one! Thank you
I got mine in the early 90's. It was $165 at the time. I got an amazing rifle, shot it in matches, still love it today. After a month refinishing the wood, getting all the nicks, bumps and stacking damage steamed out, it looks almost new to this day.
I'm glad I picked one up in 2018. They only get more valuable and harder to get! The CMP is great to deal with. I got a CMP special with a new criterion barrel and stock. It shoots quite well.
I am glad you brought up the CMP program. I had gone to purchase an M1 Garand years ago and thought, but I don't belong to any CMPs! I looked through ALL of the PRo 2A and Pro Constitutional Orgs I belong to and my range, 3 are CMP. I went for purch'ing but then they were low on any "good" grades. Anyway, now, getting back into getting!
I heartily support and agree that the American People must become involved in our Second Amendment, and as a sixty year old Veteran, I've been involved with 'CMP' for many decades. Thank you for taking the time and going through the process!
Another Bonus is the CMP is willing to work with you if there are issues with your rifle depending on the grade. After replacing some normal things like springs and the bullet stop on my CMP rifle it turned out the Op-rod tab was worn down and was causing my op rod to become detached from the track when firing. I sent some pictures over to the CMP and they sent me a shipping label and had the Op-rod replaced and test fired free of charge.
Was yours a rack grade? I would love a Garand but I’m worried about the quality of the Rack grade, which looks like pretty much the only one available.
Do most buyers pick the rack grade because of cost or because of it looking more authentic? I don’t know if I want one that “looks” like it was all made recently.
I got my first 3 Garands from the CMP. The first one had a brand new barrel and op rod! In the early 2000s the cmp would setup at the big gun shows with a bunch of M1s. Customers could select a rifle, then go thru the normal process to take delivery. I got my 1st M1 for just south of 4 Ben-jam-ins.
Subbed, I had never heard of CMP until I came across this channel. Thanks for all the shout outs and kind words toward Paul Harrell, he's the only other guntuber I've subbed to. You seem kinda like a younger version :)
@@andiamocclash397 Membership doesn't count if you are military or police, but joining the club he mentioned is like $30. The M1 itself is around $1200. In total its far cheaper than just buying one online or at a store/gun show. Edit: they have a cheaper "rack grade" (used or probably much older) M1 for $700. Its at the top of their order list.
I got my M1-D through other means, but I've been aware of the CMP for many years, and I completely agree with their mission, and from what I've heard this guy has the meat of the issue correct. Stamp of approval, carry on! 💯
Oh man, I absolutely do not need to be spending money on 'another' M1, but I've never ordered one through the CMP, and this video really demystified it! Also, slightly off topic, but I have mostly seen you through RUclips shorts, and I always assumed you were like 17-20 years old until you mentioned your DD214 in this video. Damn son, I think you need to do a video on your skincare routine!
I did this back in 1979. You had to shoot at a qualified match, send off a verification from the match along with $125.00 and wait about 3 months, but then a Garand would arrive. Very cool that this is still possible.
Great video Jared! As far as the over 60 thing goes, most of those "old timers" have this thing called common sense and have more than likely been around firearms since birth. They have been target shooting and hunting for decades before the anti groups got their foothold. The anti-gun establishment has done a fine job demonizing the tool and not the fool! Let's turn that around. The M1 Garand is an awesome rifle and a blast to shoot!
Can confirm, CAC is the best. We were TDY at Maxwell this July, they let us use our 2-hour pass, then cleaned and shipped the rifles home for us. On the range, a 90-year-old Korean war vet helped us zero the rifle. To say they were enthusiastic to have younger military guys there would be an understatement and let us stay way longer than 2 hours. I'm pretty sure every old guy working the range was a vet. Also, the 600 yard range is 10/10. Watching this video to order another from home ;)
I refused to do all that unnecessary paperwork and requirements , so i just went to my local FFL and bought my Garand. It took less than an hour . I got to handle many , and choose the one of my liking.
A am fortunate that I live an hour and 45 minutes from the Camp Perry "North" store location. It was wonderful to walk in and SEE what they have on hand. I went in looking for a Service Grade rifle that had a WWII active manufacturing date, but they had NONE in Service Grade. So I went to Field Grade and found 2. I picked the slightly older of the 2, February of 1945, made still during the war and likely saw some, but limited, action. It had the patina I was looking for without being terrible as it had its original stock. The barrel was also in good shape (It is more accurate than I am and I was surprised at the grouping I could get out of it). I would have liked to have got one older, but as you can imagine, WWII era rifles are few and far between now. I cleaned the stock, not impacting the finish at all, and it is now no longer course to the touch from the grime that had become imbedded in it, has a very dark finish as when I bought it, and looks absolutely beautiful. I was so happy I could go there and pick out myself exactly what I was looking for.
In CA, I did all this. I don't have c&r or ffl, so , no shipping to my house. Moreover, still, 10 day wait after it arrived and all background check. Ironically it takes much longer then 10 days to get all this together. No such thing as a "gun show loophole" and im having a hard time believing this item arrives at anyones door without nics..
Just received mine today 9/5/24 I turned in the paper work back in May, got right in before they sold out because of this video, thanks brother and Semper Fi.
When I bought mine back in 2017, I just used my military CAC and Driver's license (for address delivery). They also provided a % discount on your first rifle but I can't remember what it was. Will go much quicker if you can utilize that route!
A couple months late to the game, but I just wanted to add my experience with this about 6-7 years ago: I got a Mid 1950's south korean vintage mismatched with some WW2 parts, and a strikingly contrasted forend and stock. I absolutely love the thing. It was a "tack driver" right out of the crate, and even though it's got something of a bastard history, I feel the connection with my grandfather who was at Inchon, and my great uncle who was in Normandy, every time I hear the "ping" of an ejected clip. My OCD tendencies subsequently led me to "collect" an M1a as well as the "scout" and "socom" variants...but I've sold everything except for my "as close as possible to an M14,"...and my CMP M1. You're not going to get perfect if you get one of these...you're going to get amazing, and the two of you are going to grow together.
Not in California. You cannot have a firearm shipped to your front door in this state. Not even a C&R. I have an M1 Garrand from CMP. And I had to have it shipped through my FFL, just like my Gov Issue 1911. Oh, and finding ammo for them is getting harder.
Move. I really mean that. Similar jobs are everywhere, and depending on where you move, your potential pay cut could be a pay raise if cost of living goes down significantly. It's part of why, despite living out west in the past, I've stayed in the southeast.
I've been fantasizing about going to the range with an M1 Garand.....living abroad atm but when I get back home to Hawaii I'll be making this happen. Aloha and mahalo my bradah you made a Hawaiian happy. Cheeehooooo
I did this over 30 years ago. At the time it was described as "$185.00 and a long wait." It was a long wait, but at this point I really don't remember how long it took. At the time, you needed to participate in 2 sanctioned high power rifle matches, and be a member of a CMP affiliated club. The minimum score was 0 because if you scored less than that, and this would tend to put a stop to the process. There was no "choose your grade" you got what you got.
Got my Special Rack through the CMP during the quarantine. A great shooter, got here quickly (though I still had to use an FFL because CA). All I did was join the Grand Collector's Association and take a combat shotgun course (any marksmanship related activity will do, doesn't have to be with a rifle).
Good job with this video. I did find this information useful, and I thank you for not filling up your video with BS that wastes time for thousands of viewers in perpetuity.
I just want to say , you did an awesome job of walking us through this process step by step. I couldn't ask for it to have been any better done. Thanks again.
Good overview! FYI, you only need your first order notarized, any purchases after that within 3 years and you’re good without it. And in California it all has to go through an FFL which in my case added $150 to the cost. I’ve bought three from them, all “Experts” because they were out of Service Grades each time that I wanted, and I didn’t want to take a chance on getting a Rack Grade with a chewed up stock and worn barrel that I’d have to replace anyway, although I know sometimes you can get a real jewel in the Rack Grades. I always wanted a Service Grade but they’ve been out when I had the money. By the way, the GCA membership is annual, not 3 year.
I appreciate you pushing this information, more people should buy CMP but also SHHHHH. I want more Garands. I would also have you follow up on the difference in grades. Rack grades shoot like trash. The refurbished higher tier sandblasted rifles shoot much better and have been bore sighted. Don't expect a rack grade to hit a 2moa at 300 yards
I guess my request for my local club to become cmp affiliated didn't fall on deaf ears. They come up in the club search now, kind of suprised as they didn't seem too interested at the time but it's been about 5 years since I asked. Probably others expressed interest in that as well. You covered the part that always discouraged me very well. Did not know being member of the American Legion counted or being 60+. Great video, been wanting a nice Garand for a long time. Now it's time to go after one lol
they still have several choices (grade wise), which are still available. the lowest grade is the $700 dollar one which oddly enough is twice what i paid for mine 30 odd years ago from a gun store and mine is "correct grade" per their grading system for which they don't have any for sale.
The CMP also has a Memorandum of Understanding with the Boy Scouts of America as a congressionally chartered organization. The CMP in Anniston AL ;(in person) counted my service and training as a shooting sports director as one of the requirements.
I had heard the rumors and rumblings about things taking months. I decided what I wanted, gathered and filled out the paperwork, got it notarized and sent it in. Six days later, I had a Garand!

Got mine a couple years ago. Definitely an easy process with the CMP.
Very good, concise video. You nailed it! I just subscribed.
I had an M1 Garand shipped to my door. I had it converted to .308 with scout rail. It is a beautiful thing.
NOt complaining ....but mine took 4 months ....just delivered overnight ....I haven't seen it yet.,cuz Im at work !!! Thanks for the video !
how much was the total cost?
@@andiamocclash397 Membership doesn't count if you are military or police, but joining the club he mentioned is like $30. The M1 itself is around $1200. In total its far cheaper than just buying one online or at a store/gun show.
Edit: they have a cheaper "rack grade" (used or probably much older) M1 for $700. Its at the top of their order list.
Great video. I ordered an expert grade and it arrived to my door a few weeks later. Such a great rifle to have in anyone’s collection.
Vampirism
I knew it!
Thanks!
Thanks a lot man!
Thank you very much! On my way to owing an M1 Garand
I did this back in 1979. You had to shoot at a qualified match, send off a verification from the match along with $125.00 and wait about 3 months, but then a Garand would arrive. Very cool that this is still possible.
E-5 for the win boys!
Rah sarnt
It took about 2 months from the time I submitted paperwork to the time the rifle showed up, but it is absolutely worth the wait!
Funny, i work right beside the cmp. I need to do this
If thats the case you can actually just walk right up to the physical store
This video was shared to me by a friend, and I will be passing it on. Great info
Yeah, a bit confused about it shipping to your door in Cali. They don't make it easy for gun owners.
You're a fantastic, genuine content creator. Please keep going, and God bless.
It just irritates me that US citizen isn’t the sole requirement.
Irritates me that as a resident alien for twenty years I can’t either!🤬
A little bit of discretion when handing out rifles is not a bad thing.
There’s a lot of US citizens I wouldn’t trust with a gun.
@@JLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLall the ones that voted democrats
@@JLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL oh, that's the definition the 2nd Amendment uses, actually....
Just received mine today 9/5/24 I turned in the paper work back in May, got right in before they sold out because of this video, thanks brother and Semper Fi.
I did this. But in NJ there is no escaping an FFL being involved. NJ is not a US state. It is its own separate country.
Dude thanks for putting this together. Im positive it will help countless people! Cant wait to get a garand now!
When I bought mine back in 2017, I just used my military CAC and Driver's license (for address delivery). They also provided a % discount on your first rifle but I can't remember what it was. Will go much quicker if you can utilize that route!
"Prove you're engaging in marksmanship training before we sell you the tool you need to engage in marksmanship training"...
plenty of those options don't require personal ownership of a firearm
Yeah, let me just ship you a 308 battle rifle, to your door, with out any proof you have any idea how to use it.
Cheeehooooo
You forgot a step: Be wealthy. $1100 for a surplus rifle is absurd.
$1,100 is an excellent price for an M1 right now.
You sound like a liberal fruitcake. If you're not "wealthy?" Then work harder
You look like Indian Jeffrey Dahmer
I appreciate this video. I when to the south store today and picked up an expert grade M1 Garand. So proud to own it.
I learned something new every day. Great info.
I knew I had watched one of your videos before! It was nice meeting you at the Brownell's Gunfighter Gauntlet today.
Best wishes.
Thanks! You too!
Got my Special Rack through the CMP during the quarantine. A great shooter, got here quickly (though I still had to use an FFL because CA). All I did was join the Grand Collector's Association and take a combat shotgun course (any marksmanship related activity will do, doesn't have to be with a rifle).
Excellent video, @JaredAF. Salute!
I built my Garand from the receiver up. 72XXX with a 7.62 barrel. Like it so much that I have a six digit and going to barrel it the same!
Neat, didn't know this was a thing. As soon as I live somewhere where I can have proper storage I think I'll have to revisit this
I still have a little over 2 years until I get out of the army. I really hope this is still available after. It would be so sick to have a garand
Appreciate you making this video my dude 🤙🏼
ive been to birmingham to the CMP and it is a trip worth taking.
Thank you for a very informative and easy to follow video.
Well done sir! I've been wanting an M1 for quite some time. The perceived obstacles aren't nearly as bad as I thought. Thanks!
Ive finished the hunters safety course so i could feasibly do this, wow. Good to know
I appreciate you pushing this information, more people should buy CMP but also SHHHHH.
Love the M1, awesome video buddy.
When I turn 21, im going to apply for a c&r license day 1, then get me a garand. I already have a k31 and am looking at some lee enfields right now.
they still have several choices (grade wise), which are still available. the lowest grade is the $700 dollar one which oddly enough is twice what i paid for mine 30 odd years ago from a gun store and mine is "correct grade" per their grading system for which they don't have any for sale.
The CMP also has a Memorandum of Understanding with the Boy Scouts of America as a congressionally chartered organization. The CMP in Anniston AL ;(in person) counted my service and training as a shooting sports director as one of the requirements.
I looked into this a few years ago. they were pretty much out. I'll look again.
I always wanted a M-1
they have expert grades (new barrel and stock)
Great content and information making it understandable for the lay person!
I have a Remington M1 Grand. I took a bull elk last year. 850 yards… offhand… elk was running through woodlands.
I'll take "shit that never happened" for 500 Alex 😂
@@w00tskeet357 No shit… there I was…
@@herrprepper2070 Remington never made M1's. Maybe you're thinking Winchester.
Always good to find another fan of Joe Bishop.
I'm an ISRA member. They offered 1911s, Garands and .30 carbines. The prices were outrageous.
Doin' the Lord's work, my man
Now I have an excuse to get an garand again. Awesome video bro, thanks! 🙌🙌🙌
Thanks a lot Jared,,,, I’m on it😊..
Back in the 90s and 00s they used to sell these at Big 5 along with other old surplus guns as collector items. No ffl no background.
Been wanted to get one of these. Thanks for the video
I got 2 via CMP, paid $400 for one and $500 for the other. Pretty cool they are allowed to ship directly to you and not have do a transfer at an FFL.
I just seen the Subscribe button glow when you did your call to action, I rewinded and it did it again! That's so cool!
