Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this, I didn't know there were community repo's and have been screwing around with Syncthing for docker within the Synology DSM and this worked immediately. 👍
Awesome! Glad this was helpful!
Same here. Have been using Syncthing on my computers for years, but never got it up and running on my Synology. Good information. Thanks!
I started Syncthing on My DSM7 like a docker!! Work excellent!
Very helpful! Moreso than the terse commentary on Syncthing forum. So thanks to Epsylon for pointing to this.
However, two aspects of this tutorial would benefit from a further set of tutorials.
I am attempting to set up synchronisation between a Synology DS218J and an Android phone, and more precisely, between installations of Obsidian on both. (Well, not quite an installation. See * below). I did get it running, though there seem to be some clashes. So it would be quite useful to have a tutorial about the configurations of an Android version of Syncthing and a NAS-based version. That's one possible tutorial.
Equally important is the fact that Synctrayzor must also be set up to run from the NAS rather than from the desktop machine that supports the NAS. The nominal desktop version of Synctrayzor is only going to synchronise between the phone and the desktop, rather than between the phone and the NAS. So configuring Synctrayzor to recognise and work through the NAS would be quite a thing. If it's possible.
* I've made this a bit more complicated by putting my Obsidian vault folder on the NAS, even though Obsidian runs from the Windows Desktop, not on the Synology. I've set up a sync between the Desktop PC and the phone, using Synctrayzor. So I'm not actually making use of the Synology installed version. Oops!
A good overview, but it leaves out the nitty gritty details of more complex sync situations. Some sort of 'selective sync' is really needed but it's not clear if synthing has anything suitable for that. I would love to see more details of real-world sync situations on multiple platforms, including android. Thanks.
Does anybody know if Syncthing is working on DSM 7.0 yet?? **UPDATE** I am running DSM 7.0 on my machine and using Community Applications I was able to get Syncthing working on my Synology DS1520+ ... really happy!
Unfortunatefully for me it does not work. It does install but it does not appear in the main menu.
As always interesting and useful! Thank you!
Are you able to connect the Syncthing desktop client to a remote NAS via DDNS?
Thanks. Yes I am using it.
Very powerful , I love syncthing !
I don't see community in Package Center. I'm using DSM 7. Any recommendations on how to add it? Thanks
Idem for me please !
Great tutorial! Thanks for this.
Hey thanks for this video, really helpful.
You’re welcome!
@TechCoreDuo, thanks for that vid! Can this work to sync file between NAS?
FYI do not update to DSM 7, Synchthing does not work on this new update
Not working for me either.
Installed it, but it's NOT showing up under the Packages. Maybe because I recently changed to the latest DSM 7, but the GUI is not available anymore.
It doesn't work on the Android app. Works fine for Windows but the Android app is... somehow different. The server always shows a "syncing (0%)".
Edit: I've got it. The standard interface of the Android app sucks. However, there is an option to switch to the web interface. There I can accept the shared folder.
My concern is security. According to Syncthing's web site, either you have to port forward or leave UPnP enabled on your device or router. Unless you know how to port forward properly, you have to use UPnP which conventional wisdom says should be turn off. What, if anything, am I missing ?
well if UPnP concerns you then choose a random free port and use that. Server-Client software needs an open door (port) otherwise you can not connect to it... simple as that.
@@gloeckle Actually, there's another way that I found that uses neither. Use Tailscale.
syncthing does not should up in the display of active packages on my ds216+II. I'm running DSM 6.2.4-25556
Of course once I posted this I got it working. thanks!
Very nice !!!
what is the difference between this and Synology cloud station? I use cloud station and it sync everything for me. If I did not have a Synology, I think Syncthing would be great. I am sure there is some functionality/features of Syncthing I am not aware.
Basically it does the same thing, although I think Cloud station is easier to set up. Nevertheless, I'm looking to replace my Synology Drive with SyncThing because Synology doesn't have up-to-date RPM packages (OpenSuse Linux) , and Drive is pretty resource-heavy imho. Will have to compare.
@@bartvaes4126 thanks
is it safe and secure?
Hello! Thanks for this video!
I installed Syncthing on 2 different remote NAS (one at my office, the other at my customer's office). The synchronization works but the transfer rates are very slow (2MB / s). However, the connections used on both sides are fiber with much higher flow rates. Do you have any idea of the problem?
Knowing that "shared folder sync" was causing me the same problem. I have the impression that sending to the internet from the NAS is very complicated compared to sending via the local network...
Thanks!
2mb is quite fast. How much data and how many files are you trying to transfer. A lot of smaller files will be slower to transfer
@@TechCoreDuo There are backup files (Shadowprotect software), so not so much files but there are larges.
Now everything is synchronized, I have only differential files so about 1Go everyday.
But every month, there is a full backup, about 180Go, so it takes several days :(
does it work with people with dirretent internet for exemple me and my friend living in different houses?
Yes it does!
does anyone know how to get it running on dsm7?
No idea, I am just moving to Resilio Sync for now
I followed these instructions on DSM 7 and noticed no significant differences.
I'm hitting a login prompt as soon as I try to go open the package after installation. My synology is domain joined, and I've given permission to my admin account for the Syncthing application, but it won't let me in - any ideas?
Have you tried logging in with the local admin account on the Synology or are you using a domain account to try and login?
don't work with DSM7 :-(
Really? Sorry! I have not tested with DSM 7 yet as it’s still in beta.
I got it to work on DSM7. It is only possible to add shared folders, so no "photo" or "music" etc. With these folders it's not possible to add permissions.
@@euke Have you looked further into this? I'm seeing other posts online saying everything works as it should. Any issues on DSM7 that weren't there with 6?
@@CO-kd6sd I didn't have any issues setting this up today on DSM 7 using the same directions. Maybe there is something different about the type of folders you're sharing though.
This no longer works on DSM 7.2, they fucked it all up completely... I don't even have that group you added to the folder on Synology, even after creating it manually and giving it will still give me access denied. I'm furious, that POS Synology Drive is missing thousands of random files and folders for no reason whatsoever, and Syncthing is not compatible, so I'm stuck with an half assed sync...
to bad it will not obey me ...1-way sync pc-to-nas and don't delete nas file ever even if i delete from pc..... (if i like it delete from nas i will do myself) fix it Syncthing
Thanks for this great tutorial!
