I am a planner newbie, but even in the last month I've picked up some of my own do's and don'ts -Don't buy JUST one kind of sticker (decorative vs functional vs quote blocks). A mix is most useful for me. -Do think about whether you'll actually use something. I bought the Sassy Planner sticker pack not realizing that even if they are cute and funny, I wouldn't want them in my planner if I pull it out in a meeting with my boss for fear of looking unprofessional. -Do buy multiples of sticker packs that work for you and you use frequently. I loveloveloooove the Watercolor sticker pack because they're pretty and less obnoxiously bright than a lot of the others, but still very functional and have some cute decorative quotes in the mix. When I realized how quickly I was using it up, I stopped by my store and picked up a few extras before they went out of stock. But there's no need to hoard packs you won't end up using. -For me personally, don't follow pages for styles you're not into. For example, I started off following some RUclipsr's that did a lot of no white space PWM's and I felt like I should be doing that too, but it didn't make me happy. So I switched to RUclipsr's that share similar styles. I'm more likely to get something out of watching their videos that way. -Don't give up if you're not super into a spread! This week's spread isn't my favorite, but I've tried to add little touches to improve it along the way. Just because your first few spreads aren't the cutest ever or one week is meh doesn't mean you should give up! Sorry for the giant block of text. These are just my personal thoughts! Thanks for the advice, Heather!
I totally bought multiple planners 😲 Big for work and budget, I ended up getting a classic on clearance $6 for personal and pups, and a mini that fits in my purse to use for notes, shopping lists and to track my seasonal allergies. I had good intentions but it’s taking me longer to actually put them to good use. Plus they were sooo cute. 😍
I’m a noob and my first layout is horrible but I had so much fun doing it ! And I bought the faith journal for sermons and daily red and devotions and It makes me so happy to give in again! I’m focusing on faith, budget, and fitness so I bought a faith planner and budget and fitness pages to interchange with it and I’m loving it! And waiting for my 60% off of Joanns so I can get some sticker books!
I am so inspired after watching some of your videos. Super excited to make a run to Michael’s. I have always been a stationery dept freak. My favorite time of year is Back to School. Lol. I was a manager of the stationery dept at Walmart. Love love love it!
lots of great advice here, and yes, USE your stickers! I actually practice in an old planner with the "ugly" stickers that i don't like, lol that might be weird but it works for me and i don't end up wasting the stickers i don't like.
Hi Heather, I am a newbie to this. I enjoy watching your channel. I want to learn how to do planners and arranging stickers and keeping up with my planner. Thank you for the planner chats. I enjoy them. Joyce!
I was ABSOLUTELY against the vertical layout. I was convinced there was no way it would work for me. Let me explain, I love to plan and organize. I had a Carpe Diem planner that I do love. However, I do homeschool and realized I need a dedicated homeschool planner. Long story short....I LOVE THE VERTICAL LAYOUT 😂 LOL...who knew?!
Thank you so much for your positivity and excellent tips! I just started planning a month ago, and I love it so far! Your channel is my favorite! Thank you for being an inspiration!
So far, my favorite part of planning is the stickers! I have loved stickers forever, but always stopped myself from buying them because I had no good place to put them. Now I can buy all the stickers I want, because I have a reason to use them!
I'm a newbie and I started off taking your advice of not buying too many planners at first. Now I have 3, smh. But I am only using 2 of them - a mini vertical lined for work and a classic for home/errands/appts. I was trying to figure out which layouts worked best for me (horizontal vs vertical vs vertical lined). Now they have the dashboard and I am wondering about that. Anyway, thank you for these types of videos! As a newbie, I love learning more about the do and donts and tips. So please keep them coming! Also, I have to admit I have a sticker/washi tape obsession too. My husband keeps threatening me about bringing ONE MORE sticker in our house. LOL!! They are just so pretty and make me happy!!
This video is the absolute best newbie advice I've seen. It's also a good reminder for oldies or returning planners. Your bubbly personality mixed with basic truths is right on target. Thank you. Happy Planning!
I love your inspirational discussions - even this one Do's and Don'ts - this is great. Thanks for taking the time to help us through our fun journey of planning. Love ya' and your sister and pray you guys are having a blast with you cute husbands.
I'm a couple months in newbie still trying to find my way around my style. Ive seen different vids with different styles of planning and decorating and so far yours is the style I've adapted more to being mine. Recently I starting layering and I found Im really loving it. My two questions to you are 1) Is having a youtube acct the only way of receiving free merch like I keep hearing on different vids and 2) who do you follow/followed for your inspiration? Hope to hear back from you.
I receive free merch from The Happy Planner because I am currently on their Happy Planner Squad. You don't have to have a RUclips channel for that, but you do need an active instagram account. Their open call for the next team opens on May 13th.
The first time I decided to plan I bought 1 happy planner but bought tons of stickers and washi tapes. Never did anything with it. Used the planner for maybe a month or so. Gave all the stickers and washi tape to my Mom. The second time around (now) I broke the first don’t!! I bought several planners!! Thinking I would frankenplan. The realized after trying at the beginning of June, that I really needed to see things in one place! 🤦🏽♀️
I feel very good about my choices! 😆I have one planner, the necessary supplies, some dollar tree washi, a few HP books, Dollar Tree sticker sheets, I’m in two Facebook groups and it’s always positive (so far), and I just made a separate IG for inspiration but I don’t compare because what works for me works for me! Thank you for this!!
I started with my Happy Planner mini in April. My mom and I have always used crafts as a hobby and stress reliever. I love it! Totally obsessed with all of the stickers, washi, and Heather’s awesome ideas. I didn’t realize that being organized could be so fun! Heather, you rock!
Good tips, especially the one about USING the stickers! I have to remind myself all the time that if I keep waiting for that mythical "special day", my family will be auctioning off all of my stickers in the estate sale. I would recommend newbies start with one or two sticker books and try to go through them first -- try to use each type of sticker, even the ones you don't particularly like. Use your coupons, stock up when they're on sale, and if there are stickers you just don't think you'll use, swap them with friends. Every time my mom and sister and I are together, we have a mini swap meet and it's like we just went shopping again.
#1 Tip, DO ALWAYS remember why you started this hobby. Do not forget that. My personal experience do not lost your mind with all the new stuff everyone else has.
Thank Heather this really helps a lot yes your right lots planners can be over whelming I wish I watch this video before I went out buy a planners lol at least got them on sale I can anyway cover up the date use for decorative planning & yes ur right about the washi I was obsessive Learned not buy no more washi can be addicting. I ❤️❤️ stickers ur right can be heeding glad I didn’t hoarder stickers books
I did all the don'ts when I started planning. :( And know I feel to overwhelmed. I am going to take you advise and start over as a newbie. lol!! Thank you for your videos! I love them! Keep them coming. :)
Too old for Llama Drama and Planner Drama. Fortunately, I haven't seen any since I've been watching RUclips. I'd unfollow in a heartbeat. Had Washi before planners. Use it to add to Bible Study pages, sermon notes, etc. I did buy a lot online. It sure looked different in the pics. I have a gallon baggie half full of Washi for my Garage Sale later this month. Lesson learned. As for planners...would you consider a long file drawer full of planners too much? 😳 I will use them. Many of the covers I just couldn't resist. They will be used. I currently use 5 planners. Classic, Big, Mini, Budget, and Wellness. I'm looking to add the Faith planner soon. Confession...I found a Vintage planner Monday at Hobby Lobby and had to have a second one. THE most beautiful planner I've ever seen-inside and out. Sticker books...um, perhaps I'll save that confession for another day. I will say, I use them. This retired Kinder Teacher does love her stickers. Thanks Heather for another great video. 😊
Heather, I went to UA with you. I found your channel in my suggested videos on RUclips randomly a while back. In college, I still remember you decorating your agenda in class with beautiful lettering. You also have awesome public speaking skills. This video is one of my favorites you've done. Roll Tide!
I really like the advice of not comparing yourself to others. This can apply to pretty much anything. I see it quite frequently in a lot of the Facebook groups I am in (art, coloring, knitting, etc...) that people are afraid to share or try something because they are not as good as others. Also I would add, do not be afraid to use your planner for fear you might mess it up. We learn best by making mistakes.
When I first started I made the mistake of starting off with 3 mini planners and frankenplanning with them. I now know that I can't use more than one. But I will be using the inserts for the other sections I would like to have. Which is faith and budget.
‘Comparison is the thief of Joy’ , I had never heard this saying until I started to watch your channel. Now I love it so much that I have it on my Vision board to remind me that what I do is alright for me. Absolutely love your Channel, you are inspirational and a fabulous teacher x
Thank you for the video! I started in 2016 and never knew about washio or stickers until the end of 2017! After my husband passed last year I now depend on my planner and have been doing what works for me. Not all the qeeksnare the same but keep trying to make it work!
Have my mini Happy Planner and my supplies, definitely need to practice the don’t horde the stickers one already I can tell. Haha Loving these videos they are so motivational and helpful. Thank you so much! ❤️
Also, I feel you don't have to feel as though you HAVE to buy the certain planner stickers (as much as we all would like to). It adds up QUICKLY, even with coupons. I currently just finished law school and am doing bar and law society entrance exams, so I'm in 'money saving mode' before actually starting my career, and right now, besides making sure I use up all my resources I bought before, I use old scrapbooking paper to create spreads, and it's just as soothing and aesthetic as stickers can be. Don't fall into a trap that you need a certain thing to 'succeed' at planning :)
I love love love that you introduced the phrase “comparison is the thief of joy” into my life through your videos. I can be so hooked on “Her planner is gorgeous! Mine is....not.” I realize that I do that and I’m working on it. Thank you. I hope you enjoy/enjoyed your cruise :)
Well...I’m a newbie living in a very small space and I’ve acquired 10 planners 😱 but I love them.....you have been an inspiration! I love your content. Always good advice, and totally educational! Thanks Heather....enjoy the cruise.
I loooove this video! One of my “don’ts” would be to not let social media “likes” and followers define your worth in the planner community. I’m still amazed when some of my photos on Instagram get a lot of likes, but I don’t let it get it me down or frustrate me anymore when they don’t.
Here’s a tip I learned as a newbie last summer: don’t go out and buy a new style planner because someone on RUclips got it and you think they will do videos and give you ideas/inspiration for that exact planner for the next 12 months. Many planners on RUclips are experimenting with new layouts too, and may throw in the towel on that planner in a few short weeks or even less. Lol!!!! Get inspired by their design and choice of color and thoughts on sticker placement, but don’t feel you have to copy it exactly to learn how yourself. Love this video Heather. !!!!
I love all of the advice in this video but the one that really spoke to me was don't hoard the stickers! I don't have enough stickers to hoard since I'm a month fresh (lol) but that attitude can apply to so much of life. Want to learn something or do something? Then put in on the calender OR in your planner and DO IT. Use the stickers. Do the things. Live a happy life! Thanks for all your constant inspiration, Heather!
I never thought about hoarding until I realized I hoard craft supplies and coloring books. My 1st planner and stickers are on order...I will not hoard the stickers! I will however plan for time to color and craft. Thanks.
Thank you. I have bought plum paper planners for 5 years. I never decorated them. I just bought washi tape and stickers. I'm using them in my planner and my 2 travelers notebooks. I just bought my first happy planner. I bought it because of the cover but the inside isn't what I like so I had to buy an extension pack and a few other things.
Heather, I just love your positive videos! No judging, no comparing, just nothin' but LOVE for fellow planner peeps! PS, is your top Piphany?? Because I'm DYING, that's how much I loooove it.
Thank you Heather I love all your videos you for sure a you tube happy planner best friend in my head, thank for sharing...God bless you keep bring best videos I'm keep looking for every one.
Not a newbie here but I REALLY appreciate your positive vibe!!! 💗 Excellent do's and don't and SO right on!!!! 😊 My best advice is do what makes you happy and as Heather said do what works for you don't compare yourself to anyone else!!! "You do you boo!" 😁
Great video! Three years to late for me because I bought all the washi!🤣 🤣🤣 On a positive note, it sure looks pretty🤦🏼♀️sitting in all the three drawer clear plastic containers I hunted all over for from Homegoods and TJmaxx!
Awesome job. I am new to all this but I have a classic planner that I keep at home and then I have a mini planner that goes in my purse. Be careful on your trip and thank you for this video I always feel like my planner is ugly and my sister always tells me remember its yours NO one else it works for you so thats all that matters but I always fight with that one...and I have see ideas on your channel and on Pinterest that I want to do but I will make it my own for example you date night page I loved it my hubby and I can never make up our mind so I will be doing a page like that but I will make it my own. Thank you for thr video
I so wish I would have seen this a few months ago when I 1st started. I bought all the planners. I have found a few things that I like better than others. I like a lot of the carpe diem products rather than happy planner. I do however, like the faith planner in the happy planner better than the one from carpe diem, likewise I like the fitness pack in the carpe diem rather than the happy planner. I love it all, washi, stickers, all of it. My pocketbook has not cared for it. Make sure you are spending no more that what you are able. It's easy to get caught up in it all. When I very first started I tried using 1 planner but it was way too cramped and I couldn't turn my pages. I have had a very busy month, so I can't wait for things to slow down so I can get into a couple of my planners more, like my home and recipes ones.😁 Happy Easter ✝️
I have a tip… Do be thankful and happy with what u can find during a new release. Don’t complain and be negative when you can’t find what you want during a new release
Thanks for these tips!! Definitely was doing the comparison one on why mine spreads are not as nice as some of you seasoned ladies and have to keep reminding myself I just stared and I'm still learning! Love your videos!
Great video/tips! I'm a year into Happy Planning and I'm still finding my groove. My only advice is: Don't go broke trying to buy everything you "think" you need. I've always 💜'd paper, pens and the rest of the goodies & I find them everywhere from high-end stores to the Dollar store.
Just so you know I always look to you for inspiration! :) I just started planning in February. This weekend I bought all the planners...well 3 actually. they were on clearance at Joanne's for $6.34 a piece. dated 2018-19 planners, however, i can always change the dates....there are stickers for that....as long as i don't hoard them. Hope the cruise was awesome!!!!
Love the video. Hope your cruise is fabulous. I’ve done several of your “don’ts” but think I’ve finally found what works for me. It took a lot of practice and failures to find my niche, but it was so worth it. I know you don’t share your monthly view in your classic catch-all planner because it’s where you do your budget and don’t want to share personal information. I so get that, but will you do one on “extra” planner pages showing the layout? You could always use fake income and expenses.
You are such a great teacher. Your voice is always filled with excitement & joy of life & planning. 🐈🐈⬛🐈
Thanks for keeping it real 😀😀.... Thanks for sharing 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
Watching your videos gets me hyped to plan!❤️
yes good tips
Great tips!!!!
I am a planner newbie, but even in the last month I've picked up some of my own do's and don'ts
-Don't buy JUST one kind of sticker (decorative vs functional vs quote blocks).
This was helpful
I totally bought multiple planners 😲 Big for work and budget, I ended up getting a classic on clearance $6 for personal and pups, and a mini that fits in my purse to use for notes, shopping lists and to track my seasonal allergies. I had good intentions but it’s taking me longer to actually put them to good use. Plus they were sooo cute. 😍
I brought alot of hp planners and use them all maybe because I love to plan and organized.

Love all your beautiful floral clothes! Sooo cute😍
Thank you! they are from my boutique! I'd love to style you some outfits if you're interested!
Thank you so much for this video! 👍
Thank you so much for your do's and don'ts.
I love what she said about not comparing your planner to others. She needs to have these awesome quotes on a shirt or a frame to hang in my home.
This video is the absolute best newbie advice I've seen. It's also a good reminder for oldies or returning planners. Your bubbly personality mixed with basic truths is right on target. Thank you. Happy Planning!

Love for the advice it helps a lot things
My dad always told me that “envy is the thief of joy”..so when i heard yours so made me click with you on a more personal level
Roberta DeJean That is SO true! My late dad told me the same thing when I was a child and I’ve been holding to that ever since ❤️
LOL, I too bought all the washi! But I still love it! I am a newbie and I do love your positive vibe! Keep up the good job!
#1 Tip, DO ALWAYS remember why you started this hobby. Do not forget that. My personal experience do not lost your mind with all the new stuff everyone else has.
Great do’s and don’t! Always love your advice!
Thanks for making this video! I really needed this. I’ll be purchasing a new planner for 2020.
Don't be afraid to mess up in your planner. A well loved planner means you use it!
That's what I'm afraid of, I'm a newbie with very little self confidence and I'm so scared to mess up 😞
kessytje I try new layouts all the time. If I mess up, I get a fresh start next week ❤
I should have seen this a year ago. Re the washi tape and the sticker hoarding. Lol🤭
I did all the don'ts when I started planning. :( And know I feel to overwhelmed. I am going to take you advise and start over as a newbie. lol!! Thank you for your videos! I love them! Keep them coming. :)
Same here!
I really love all your videos. You give the best advice!!!😍😍😍😍😍
Thanks, great video!

I currently use 5 planners. Classic, Big, Mini, Budget, and Wellness. I'm looking to add the Faith planner soon.

THE most beautiful planner I've ever seen-inside and out.

Great tips, love, love this video!

Excellent idea.....😀😀
I love your dos and don'ts! Tfs!
Planner babes !!! Let’s be friends :) ❤️
Yes no drama not about that all positive vibes!
Tfs your tips. Hope you enjoy your cruise!

I love you videos. You are soooo awesome. My favorite planner is the mini planner. I told my sister about your channel. Keep up the good videos.

Well...I’m a newbie living in a very small space and I’ve acquired 10 planners 😱 but I love them.....you have been an inspiration! I love your content. Always good advice, and totally educational! Thanks Heather....enjoy the cruise.
Where is the best place to look for challenges? I've just started a planner instagram and doing the challenges would be great to help me start off 🙂
I loooove this video!
Nice tips!!!!!!
Thanks.
Such great tips Heather! I totally agree with not comparing your planner to another’s and use other planner’s ideas as inspiration.
Where is the best place to purchase dashboards for happy planners that are big sized?? Having a hard time finding anything besides classic. Thanks!
Etsy would probably be my go to. Amazing things on there
Really great tips, thanks Heather!!!
I love your tip about planner drama. The planner community can be such an uplifting place! I run from drama... literally. Great video 🥰
No shame in the planning game!!
“Don’t buy all the planners.” Oops! I should have watched this video before diving in. 😆😂
Great tips. Thank you Heather! ❤
Use your stickers?!?😱😱😱
Thank you! I love that you have such a positive outlook... 😊😊😊
Enjoy your cruise!!!
Thank you Heather I love all your videos you for sure a you tube happy planner best friend in my head, thank for sharing...God bless you keep bring best videos I'm keep looking for every one.
Not a newbie here but I REALLY appreciate your positive vibe!!! 💗
Excellent do's and don't and SO right on!!!! 😊
My best advice is do what makes you happy and as Heather said do what works for you don't compare yourself to anyone else!!! "You do you boo!" 😁
Heather: “Buy all the stickers!”
Me: “Yehey!!!
Heather: “Don’t hoard the stickers!”
Me: “Erhm... How? Fine. I shall try.
😂
pauline valenzuela that was so hysterical because I felt the same way
Great video! Three years to late for me because I bought all the washi!🤣 🤣🤣
On a positive note, it sure looks pretty🤦🏼♀️sitting in all the three drawer clear plastic containers I hunted all over for from Homegoods and TJmaxx!
I am a newbie 5 months in. Oops I have five planners. However I use all five.lol. I love your videos
I have a tip…
Do be thankful and happy with what u can find during a new release. Don’t complain and be negative when you can’t find what you want during a new release
Thanks for these tips!! Definitely was doing the comparison one on why mine spreads are not as nice as some of you seasoned ladies and have to keep reminding myself I just stared and I'm still learning! Love your videos!
Hi Heather! I recently found your channel. Thank you for all the inspiration and tips! Oh I am am Alabama girl too! Calera, Alabama! ❤️🙂
You are the best I wish I had this when I started ok I’m gonna reset a do over 🤗🤗🤗
Comparison ia a thief of joy. You nailed love that!!!
I love your positivity ! I am not a newbie, but your advice was terrific !
I’m a newbie, I bought a mini happy planner and one sticker book. I’m good 🤷🏻♀️
That’s what we all say!
great reminders for newbies and veterans! thanks for being so positive and sharing.
I’m a newbie I’m using a mini but I just love the stickers! ! Good advice thanks
Really enjoyed your chat today. Great things said! I love your positivity and thanks for the good advice. Enjoy your cruise!
I just started planning. I want to get all these stickers but didn't. Just sticking to the minimal for now.
