  • Conversion of my custom build Decathlon Riverside Touring 920 GX Eagle AXS for bikepacking, race and adventure - long-term cycling. Setup aerobars with Sram wireless blips, klite light and usb charger, mounts and cages, bags and packs.
    After recently posting a video about building my Riverside Touring 920 with Sram Force GX Eagle AXS (called mullet), here's the conversion for bikepacking, racing and adventure.
    It's the 2nd part of a series about bikepacking itself. You have a different relationship with your bike when you have built it yourself. You know every screw and are prepared for so many situations ...
    I am very impressed with Deacathlon's Riverside range of bikepacking bags.The value for money cannot be beaten.
    If you have any questions feel free to ask me anything ...
    I hope you like this video as much as the previous one.
    The next videos will take you on some adventures that I will experience with my bike ... i love nature and spend a lot of time with it ... stealth camping, making fire, do some bushcraft, preparing meal outside and observing animals and nature and ...
    I hope you will join me!!!
    Thank you for watching!

    I got a bike with only 24cm of clearance between the handlebar and the tire. The handlebar harness needs 30cm according to Decathlon. Do you think I could use some more distance pieces between the stem and the harness to make it work despite the lack of clearance?

    • @ricksbikeride
      @ricksbikeride  Месяц назад

      Hello Marco,
      the Decathlon harness needs about 30cm ... that´s true.
      No way I think that it will work with distance pieces (to say this from a distance without a picture) ... I´m also not sure, what you actually mean with it. But ...
      If you attach the harness more horizontally, you increase the distance between the handlebars and tires. Then of course the bag can no longer carry much weight because gravity pulls it back towards the wheel. Likewise, with a dropbar in this position you can no longer reach the openings of the bag. If you have a flatbar you can use a spacer cradle to keep the harness in position and far from the head tube and therefore more distance from the tire. Other possibility is a different harness and roll ... meanwhile there are dozens of manufacturers out there ... goole it. Another option is the use of a aerobar where you - among many other advantages - can install for example: the Revelate Designs Pitchfork.
      Hope I could help you with my thoughts ...
      Keep on cycling.
      Maybe you like my Dreambuild-Video, too.

    Hey, nice video, how is the bike holding up after a year of use ? I'm tempted by this bike, but reading the reviews on decathlon's website i've had some concerns, quite a few customers were complaining about the durability, especially poor build quality on the wheels. What have been your experience with this bike durability ?

    • @ricksbikeride
      @ricksbikeride  4 месяца назад +1

      Hi Paul,
      thanks for watching this video.
      In the previous video I show the structure of my custom build. So I can't know what the finish is like on a factory bike ... All I know so far is that the bike is still in a very good shape at all. Nothing dramatically was broken since I build it.
      Rims in particular are usually a controversial topic.
      I have the same rims ( Sunringle Duroc 30) as the original bike and I chose them because they received very good reviews. It takes an experienced mechanic to build wheelsets well ...Often you are responsible for a complication with your rims because you have improperly maintained them or overloaded them. In my opinion, broken spokes are part of wear and tear, as you can't always keep an eye on everything - especially in very adverse terrain and far from civilization.
      The bike was tested and designed by various experienced cyclists before it went into production.
      Of course there is always something better ..., but for the price there is nothing comparable ... in my opinion.
      Hope this helps ...
      Rick

    Great build - I also have a RT920 and so far love it :) How did you manage to attach the 2nd snack pouch to the stem? If you have one already attached, attaching the second one over the top of it is a problem... it looks like you cut out this part of the video exactly at that point, around 28:27 :). I ended up only attaching one of them to the stem, so one is attached tightly but the other one is a bit loose, which I don't really like.

    • @ricksbikeride

      Hi Antone, nice ... that you enjoyed it. I only attached the food pouch to the handlebars and the bottom of the steering head. For me that's enough. They could also have been fastened to the stem - cumbersome, but possible - but it's not necessary at all. They work fine like that if you don´t overload with weight. Bottle of water works great. Where is the problem with yours? Same company?

      @@ricksbikeride First of all congratulations for your very useful and beautiful video, I was asking myself the same question, so in summary, you connected a food pouch in two points: 1.handlebar and 2.stem. While you attached the second food pouch only to the handlebar, right?

      @ricksbikeride  Год назад

      @@DavisMedoriPhotography Thanks for watching and that you liked the video. I never thought that the food pouches could be an issue ... so for the video I tried to show all the possibilties of attachments: handlebar, stem and steering head ... but it was difficult to show on video if you don´t have special light and cameras while setting up the bike with bags ... like I wrote it the comment before: Now, I only use two points to attach the pouch: handlebar and steering head (the triangle of head and frame). For me that is enough attachment even with a 750ml water bottle ... snacks and little tools or garbage that I don´t want to throw away and keep there until the next deposit. But you can use all attachment points, but you don´t need to and overall it´s to complicated when using to pouches:) I hope that this answer is enough satisfying ... I hope you liked the DREAM BUILD VIDEO too! Stay tuned and take care. Rick

      @@ricksbikeride Oh no Rick, it's not a problem but just a curiosity, so if I understood correctly, in your video you connected the first food pouch to the handlebar and stem, and the second to the handlebar and steering head?

    • @ricksbikeride
      @ricksbikeride  5 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Marti,
      since it is a bikepacking bike where luggage is transported and appropriate tires for off-road and gravel, the dynamo is not noticeable.
      So far I know:
      Increased resistance can only be measured at very low speeds in the approx. 10 km/h range.
      Speed reduction when lights OFF/lights ON
      at approx. 10 km/h - -0.1 km/h/-1.6 km/h
      at approx. 20 km/h - -0.1 km/h/-1.1 km/h
      at approx. 30 km/h - -0.1 km/h/-0.7 km/h
      at approx. 50 km/h - -0.1 km/h/-0.36 km/h
      I don't know anyone who has ever noticed a significant difference like that ...
      So ..., you want to charge indepent your devices and have a light?
      You need a hub dynamo.

    • @ricksbikeride
      @ricksbikeride  Год назад +1

      Hi Lucas,
      thanks for watching the video. Hope you like it.
      I hope that I unterstand your question wright ...The clearance between saddle and top of MY!! seat tube is about 18cm ... to install this particular saddle bag you need at least 11cm of seatpost .... by that, there is still a clearance between tyre and seat bag of 11cm ...but every frame is different in angle ...and every seat bag is different. The cheaper bags aswell dingle and dongle to the side and up and down while riding on rough terrain, when not correct loaded. This one is loaded just with matress, sleeping bag and sandals on the side and jacket on top and is still rigid - the new Ortlieb seat bag aswell. ... so you can´t answer this question correctly, because of the circumstances with your particular other hardware ... suggestion: Buy one and if it ´s not working, send it back.
      I know that a few small people have problems and fear that their seatpost is to low and that the seat bag might not fit, but then their frame is to big anyway ...
      These bags are designed to fit on any "normal" bike with logical specifications ....
      I hope I was able to put your doubts into perspective ....

    What length riser blocks did you use and how did you determine what you needed?

    • @ricksbikeride
      @ricksbikeride  8 месяцев назад

      Hi John,
      I use the Profile Sonic 35a aerobar and the separately available risers from the same manufacturer. I already knew that the aerobar without a riser wouldn't give me the comfortable relief I needed, which is what I'm primarily concerned about. The basic height of the 35a is about 60mm. With so-called risers you can increase this to up to 130mm. My risers increase by 40mm. So I'm about 10cm above the handlebars.
      The best way to find out is for sure to have a professional bike fitting. But I couldn´t afford that by that time and I have to travel quit far to reach the bikefitter I trust.
      So I trusted my gut and wasn't disappointed.
      The extreme athlete Jonas Deichmann used much higher risers on his African tour...
      So it's very individual.
      For me on the long distance it's about temporary relief and comfort. Some also think about looks... I don't care. I have enough control and I am using it more and more that shows me that my reasoning was not so wrong. Just try what you think and what will bring you comfort ... I hope this can help you ...

      @@ricksbikeride thanks for the advice..I did find some fork cages on the website in netherlands made by toppeak. A bit expensive unfortunately. I just decided to cancel my order on the saddle bag.. i found one in a Lidl shop and being different brand yet similar type of mounting to my frame , i'm thinking it's far from Ideal. I much rather wait till the decathlon frame bag comes back in stock to try or purchasing the ortlieb 6litr bag .. being 29cm X 50cm that fits the closest. Yet ortlieb is a bit expensive 🫰 and I kinda find it very thin material. The decathlon bag looks sooo much better and more sturdy to be honest! Fortunately that Lidl shop had 2 crivit 5l frame bags for hanging on the toptube. It isn't the best quality, yet is 11euro a piece , zips close waterproof /repellent, and having 2 I can mount 10l of bits and pieces,spare tubes lock etc on my toptube. In case I find something better, I can always transfer them elsewhere on the rear rack as they are nice and narrow.
