How to setup bikepacking race adventure Aerobars Sram blips cages bikebuild Riverside Touring920 AXS
Conversion of my custom build Decathlon Riverside Touring 920 GX Eagle AXS for bikepacking, race and adventure - long-term cycling. Setup aerobars with Sram wireless blips, klite light and usb charger, mounts and cages, bags and packs.
After recently posting a video about building my Riverside Touring 920 with Sram Force GX Eagle AXS (called mullet), here's the conversion for bikepacking, racing and adventure.

      Hi Davide, I don´t know for sure .... cannot provide remote diagnosis ... BUT why not? So I installed an Eagle AXS 1x12 drivetrain. You have to look that the 12cassette fits on your wheel. Check the Apex cassette and what rear hub driver body is suitable. Normaly sram xd driver bodies are used with mountainbike cassettes, The Sram website should offer a compatibility list somewhere. To check aswell the Apex crankset ... compatible to your bottom bracket ... is the chainline still okay?! Do some checkings online at Srams compatibility list and instruction manual of the apex groupset and you will succeed. Good luck ... hope this helps a bit.

So far it has performed well... if you look at the performance, there are better models from SON, but they are also much more expensive. Just another question. Somehow the breaks are not fitting. Which Adapters do you use? I ordered some but they are not fitting the holes on the frame… i see you mounting the Adapters at around 12:20 minutes in the Video but did not find them online.

      Hi, the original bike from Decathlon has 160mm discs. As you can see in the description of my video I used 180mm brake discs and Sram AXS Force brake caliper with flatmount. So I needed a postmount- to flatmount adapter. I installed the wolftooth adapter in my special case ... Yours could be different ... You need to know what disc and brake do you have. Then you should find the right postmount adapter .... Good luck. Rick

The Eagle group 1x12 drivetrain 32T is for my setup with quiet a lot of weight in bags and waterbottles and for my needs necessary and appropriate. The Redshift ShockStop Suspension Stem is comfortable for wrist, hand and arms. And over all I can rely in my own build in terms of lubrication the right stuff and amount at the right places:) I know every screw and this secure feeling is unbeatable while out on the track no matter where. I got a bike with only 24cm of clearance between the handlebar and the tire. The handlebar harness needs 30cm according to Decathlon. Do you think I could use some more distance pieces between the stem and the harness to make it work despite the lack of clearance?

    • @ricksbikeride
      @ricksbikeride 2 месяца назад

      Hello Marco, the Decathlon harness needs about 30cm ... that´s true. No way I think that it will work with distance pieces (to say this from a distance without a picture) ... I´m also not sure, what you actually mean with it. But ... If you attach the harness more horizontally, you increase the distance between the handlebars and tires. Then of course the bag can no longer carry much weight because gravity pulls it back towards the wheel. Likewise, with a dropbar in this position you can no longer reach the openings of the bag. If you have a flatbar you can use a spacer cradle to keep the harness in position and far from the head tube and therefore more distance from the tire. Other possibility is a different harness and roll ... meanwhile there are dozens of manufacturers out there ... goole it. Another option is the use of a aerobar where you - among many other advantages - can install for example: the Revelate Designs Pitchfork. Hope I could help you with my thoughts ... Keep on cycling. I just decided to cancel my order on the saddle bag.. i found one in a Lidl shop and being different brand yet similar type of mounting to my frame , i'm thinking it's far from Ideal. I much rather wait till the decathlon frame bag comes back in stock to try or purchasing the ortlieb 6litr bag .. being 29cm X 50cm that fits the closest. Yet ortlieb is a bit expensive 🫰 and I kinda find it very thin material. The decathlon bag looks sooo much better and more sturdy to be honest! Fortunately that Lidl shop had 2 crivit 5l frame bags for hanging on the toptube. It isn't the best quality, yet is 11euro a piece , zips close waterproof /repellent, and having 2 I can mount 10l of bits and pieces,spare tubes lock etc on my toptube. In case I find something better, I can always transfer them elsewhere on the rear rack as they are nice and narrow.

I'm tempted by this bike, but reading the reviews on decathlon's website i've had some concerns, quite a few customers were complaining about the durability, especially poor build quality on the wheels. What have been your experience with this bike durability ?

    • @ricksbikeride
      @ricksbikeride 4 месяца назад

      Hi Paul, thanks for watching this video. In the previous video I show the structure of my custom build. So I can't know what the finish is like on a factory bike ... All I know so far is that the bike is still in a very good shape at all. Nothing dramatically was broken since I build it. Rims in particular are usually a controversial topic. I have the same rims ( Sunringle Duroc 30) as the original bike and I chose them because they received very good reviews. It takes an experienced mechanic to build wheelsets well ...Often you are responsible for a complication with your rims because you have improperly maintained them or overloaded them. In my opinion, broken spokes are part of wear and tear, as you can't always keep an eye on everything - especially in very adverse terrain and far from civilization. The bike was tested and designed by various experienced cyclists before it went into production. Of course there is always something better ..., but for the price there is nothing comparable ... in my opinion. Hope this helps ... Rick

      @ricksbikeride 5 месяцев назад

      Hello Andrea, In general, many components can be connected together. When it comes to the brake system, there are many adapters for different mounts such as flatmount, postmount or IS. Please contact Decathlon Service e.g. on the RT920 bicycle frame page, where you can ask specific questions about the frame and your components you want to use. However, the frame is intended as a touring bike with drop bars .... you have to find out if the a flat bar makes sense for your own dimensions .... In my experience I would suggest that this frame is excellent with the intended fork. And they are great value for the money. But you can build what ever you want, but you have to dive into the exact measurements by yourself if want to build a custom bike .... Good luck!

Many people forget to add the right grease in the most important places and then, when removing it, wonder why it can't be removed so easily without destroying the frame or why it doesn't function as expected. Setting up the headset press is as follows: You just popp it in and than as you can see from 4:35 min. how to screw it in; setting up is the opposite of expanding - as you can see in the following seconds ... You really live up to your name. You could also simply ask: how do you set up the headset press? ... instead of criticizing me for my other activities in my video. What length riser blocks did you use and how did you determine what you needed?

    • @ricksbikeride
      @ricksbikeride 9 месяцев назад

      Hi John, I use the Profile Sonic 35a aerobar and the separately available risers from the same manufacturer. I already knew that the aerobar without a riser wouldn't give me the comfortable relief I needed, which is what I'm primarily concerned about. The basic height of the 35a is about 60mm. With so-called risers you can increase this to up to 130mm. My risers increase by 40mm. So I'm about 10cm above the handlebars. The best way to find out is for sure to have a professional bike fitting. But I couldn´t afford that by that time and I have to travel quit far to reach the bikefitter I trust. So I trusted my gut and wasn't disappointed. The extreme athlete Jonas Deichmann used much higher risers on his African tour... So it's very individual. For me on the long distance it's about temporary relief and comfort. Some also think about looks... I don't care. I have enough control and I am using it more and more that shows me that my reasoning was not so wrong. Just try what you think and what will bring you comfort ... I hope this can help you ... Very useful video , I have been lucky enough to get a new 920 here in France , hoping to collect it next week . I like 1x drivetrains so your video is just what I was looking for . I'll run the bike as standard for its first 6/12months , then depending how I get on with OE transmission , I'll switch to 1x . Lovely build ,

    Dear Rick, thank you very much for your detailed build video and novel way of presenting the content. I love your dream bike build. I am now planning to start my bike packing journey with 520 as I couldn't afford at this point of time to buy or build a 920. Hope one day I will follow your path and build my own dream bike. Is it possible to present a list of all components you used for this build and links of these components where we can purchase. I am from Berlin and hope one day we cross our paths and participate in a nice bike packing journey with you. I am a new bee and just now starting the fascinating journey of enjoying beautiful German and European nature with a bike and camping. By the way is there a way to do wild camping in Germany to save some money on stay expenses..? Thanks for inspiring many with your videos. Looking forward to view your upcoming travel videos. At the moment I can´t make a list of all the parts I used ... but maybe in the winter time I find some spare time to drop a list and links in the description. Congratulations that you decide to explore the world by bike. One of the best decisions you can make ... Wild camping in germany is forbidden. A biwak for the night is legal. I never had problems with wild camping ... as long as you don´t leave trash or do stupid fire when it´s dry, be quite and don´t disturb your neighbors... so on ...just love nature and be respectful ...treat like you want to be treaten ... How much clearance would you say is needed minimum between the seat and rear tire for that saddle bag? Thanks!

    • @ricksbikeride
      @ricksbikeride Год назад

      Hi Lucas, thanks for watching the video. Hope you like it. I hope that I unterstand your question wright ...The clearance between saddle and top of MY!! seat tube is about 18cm ... to install this particular saddle bag you need at least 11cm of seatpost .... by that, there is still a clearance between tyre and seat bag of 11cm ...but every frame is different in angle ...and every seat bag is different. The cheaper bags aswell dingle and dongle to the side and up and down while riding on rough terrain, when not correct loaded. This one is loaded just with matress, sleeping bag and sandals on the side and jacket on top and is still rigid - the new Ortlieb seat bag aswell. ... so you can´t answer this question correctly, because of the circumstances with your particular other hardware ... suggestion: Buy one and if it ´s not working, send it back. I know that a few small people have problems and fear that their seatpost is to low and that the seat bag might not fit, but then their frame is to big anyway ... These bags are designed to fit on any "normal" bike with logical specifications .... I hope I was able to put your doubts into perspective .... Hope you like the Dream Build Video aswell .... stay tuned. Rick

    Great build. I'm thinking about buying complete bike or building one like you did, specially that I've many parts that I can reuse (full Rival XPLR ACX Group, Wheels) I have couple questions: Can you write a bit more about those cushions (or what is it) that you've out on bars? What was quality of frame, I'm particularlt interested in BB and HT, did you have to ream faces? Which parts come with frame? (any screws, axles, etc...) Do you have dynamo hub? If yes how do you like it? Thanks. I've already subscribed to you channels as those two videos that you've share are really great quality content.

    • @ricksbikeride
      @ricksbikeride Год назад

      Hi Lukasz, nice that you like my videos. I am pleased that you are also interested in building a bike. That's why I made these videos, among other things ... So that my audience learns something and your own build is easier for you. So, you told me that you perhaps want to build a bike too. Congrats for this thoughts ... because it´s really a journey into parts and the whole structure ... good to know every single part of your bike while bikepacking around unexplored areas:) But it´s a decision of time, money, fun or anger ... As you can read in the description of the DreamBuild-Video I always wanted to have this special bike: RT920. But it was out of stock for months and months ... So I couldn´t wait anymore and decided to build my own custom bike based on the RT920. If you want an RT920 you should buy a complete one, because it´s now in stock again at Decathlon. The complete bike with all installed parts is unbeatable in terms of price. if you buy all the components individually, you'll never get the Decathlon price!!!! So I would have bought the bike, offered at Decathlon and then, if necessary, gradually swapped the drivetrain and brake system for a Sram AXS GX Eagle and Force brakes. There is now also the extremely durable new SRAM Eagle Transmission, but is also much more expensive ... Whether your XPLR fits here, I can not say. You'd have to do some research to see if this would fit in a 142 frame with a BB68/73, chainline!?... there exist an Sram Service sheet to that, where you find out, which parts fit together ... My Mullet AXS GX Eagle will definitely fit. To your questions: On the bars I installed the REDSHIFT SPORTS Cruise Control handle. They give you more rest on along day, reduce vibrations and - installed in the right angle like I did - reduce pain in your wrist. The frame is really well and nice! welded frame. Everything is exact and no ream needed. For that price it´s unbelievable. No other parts with the frame. It´s naked. For sure there is a dynamo hub. It´s a SHUTTER PRECIONS DL-7. So far it´s very good working. If at the time when I built the bike a SON 28 dynamo hub would have been availble, I would have choosen that one ... but it was´nt availeble ´cause of the pandemic ... and it costs more than twice as the one I used now. SON is extremly good and I have one on another bike that is working now for 10 years without any problems! Thank you for subscribing! Any questions left? Have a good time ....

    • @skraburski
      @skraburski Год назад

      @@ricksbikeride thanks for reply :) I've checked compatibility map and yes it will work :) I'll skip dynamo hub for the moment as I've DT GR1600 wheelset from my previous gravel bike which I never liked, the frame was to small and tires to narrow. Do you have FB acount, I'll share my pics when I finish my bike.

    Funny thing: with that type of a headset it's now more difficult to place your bike inside the car cause of the built-in steering restrictors in the cup.

    • @ricksbikeride
      @ricksbikeride Год назад

      Hi Andrey, hope you like my build. If not, tell me what you don´t like ... I think, I don´t really understand your objection .... the "restrictors" give a better stand when loaded. Aswell easier to carry while crossing rough terrain ... Steering lock is usually installed to prevent the handlebar from banging against the down or upper tube.The limitation of the steering angle also helps against torn brake lines and shift cables if installed. In that sense, it makes sense for many possibilities ... no negative reason for me. Did you watched: How to setup bikepacking ... installing Aerobars, klite charger + light, bags and packs? Great build - I also have a RT920 and so far love it :) How did you manage to attach the 2nd snack pouch to the stem? If you have one already attached, attaching the second one over the top of it is a problem... it looks like you cut out this part of the video exactly at that point, around 28:27 :). I ended up only attaching one of them to the stem, so one is attached tightly but the other one is a bit loose, which I don't really like.

    • @ricksbikeride

      Hi Antone, nice ... that you enjoyed it. I only attached the food pouch to the handlebars and the bottom of the steering head. For me that's enough. They could also have been fastened to the stem - cumbersome, but possible - but it's not necessary at all. They work fine like that if you don´t overload with weight. Bottle of water works great. Where is the problem with yours? Same company?

    • @DavisMedoriPhotography
      @DavisMedoriPhotography Год назад

      @@ricksbikeride First of all congratulations for your very useful and beautiful video, I was asking myself the same question, so in summary, you connected a food pouch in two points: 1.handlebar and 2.stem. While you attached the second food pouch only to the handlebar, right? On this Riverside food pouch model it is also possible to make a third connection: on the fork. Did you prefer not to use it? Maybe it was getting in your way?

    • @ricksbikeride
      @ricksbikeride Год назад

      @@DavisMedoriPhotography Thanks for watching and that you liked the video. I never thought that the food pouches could be an issue ... so for the video I tried to show all the possibilties of attachments: handlebar, stem and steering head ... but it was difficult to show on video if you don´t have special light and cameras while setting up the bike with bags ... like I wrote it the comment before: Now, I only use two points to attach the pouch: handlebar and steering head (the triangle of head and frame). For me that is enough attachment even with a 750ml water bottle ... snacks and little tools or garbage that I don´t want to throw away and keep there until the next deposit. But you can use all attachment points, but you don´t need to and overall it´s to complicated when using to pouches:) I hope that this answer is enough satisfying ... I hope you liked the DREAM BUILD VIDEO too! Stay tuned and take care. Rick

      @DavisMedoriPhotography Год назад

      @@ricksbikeride Oh no Rick, it's not a problem but just a curiosity, so if I understood correctly, in your video you connected the first food pouch to the handlebar and stem, and the second to the handlebar and steering head?
