    "lets say you have a friend"
    That's the most unrealistic part of the "learning HEMA yourself" segment.

      If you don't like your neighbour you could also use him for target practice. XD

      An imaginary friend counts, I think. I had a similar kind of "friend" but he tried to kill me one day:

    Thanks for the vid. When answering so small questions (Well small for you, Matt might have told us about how tall people were at every point in time at every country ;), I think it is perfectly fine to answer multiple in one video. Just don't forget to put every "topic" in the title as you have done now. Good video overall!

    Yeah I like this format, I feel like you could get through more questions in this fashion. Also, like you said, there are questions that don't warrant their own video, not even their own 2-3 minute video, but they could still be interesting. Feels a bit like scholagladitora's 5 questions with Matt Easton which I always liked.
    Greetings from Luxembourg ;-)

    In my opinion, you might want to try doing your usual video format and answering 1 or 2 questions in the comments.
    I believe that the majority of your viewers are here mainly seeking your opinion on medieval thingies in comparison with other youtubers of the same genre.

    Completely unrelated question to the topic at hand, but what is that second sword from the top on the wall? It kinda looks like a scimitar, but the crossguard and handle are much different to any scimitar I've seen.

    So through all this trail and error. How long did it take for European knight to realise that they could finish there opponent by unscrewing his pommel and throwing it at him???

    Many people died by chance. Many people also did not make manuals. And what if one person is smarter than the average bear, I mean, person?
    .
    Why buckler and not shield?
    .
    And yes, videos like these for answering questions, in my opinion, is brilliant.

    I have a bit of a problem. I was going on kultofathena and I found a perfect sword. The problem is the regular one is out of stock and the only kind left are the blunted ones. I know I can always sharpen the blade but I am not sure how to put a point on the tip. I looked for a tutorial on how one would do this and the supplies needed, but I couldn't find one. If anyone in the comments can tell me if it is possible to do this, or if you found a link to do this, please reply.

    • @SnapJelly
      @SnapJelly  6 лет назад +2

      usually kult of athenas sharpening service isn't all that good and you'll need to sharpen it more yourself anyway, If you mean that only the ''stage combat'' version is available then those usually can't be sharpened.
      you can send them a blank e-mail with the number of the item you want and they'll email you back once its back in stock

    About the Height in the Middle ages: As far as i know the Netherlands for example were known for being small people and suddenly 100 years ago or so they soon became known for being the tallest people in the world. I guess they had a nutrition problem?

    • @iamnerd69
      @iamnerd69 6 лет назад

      GermanCurl iirc average man from Netherlands increased by around 20cm in last 150 years. Here in Poland it's around 10-15cm in that time span. So yeah people in middle ages were at least like 25cm shorter than now.

    • @jonharker9028
      @jonharker9028 Год назад

      ah yes, a few years late to the party
      150-odd years ago was the Industrial Revolution, when malnutrition and overworking and all that fun stuff were at their worst. You can’t extrapolate from height data taken then, because it’s an outlier in the grand scheme of history.
      Plus, the average height for young adult males across the whole of Europe is still in the upper-mid 170s for centimetres of height-and the minimum height for a Classical Roman legionary soldier, according to recruitment books, was 165 cm. Henry VIII of England was 188 cm tall, according to the measurements of his multiple suits of armour. It shouldn’t be surprising that people were and are still basically the same people. Most of the increase in average height over recent decades is due to post-world-war prosperity, and can’t be considered a large enough trend to scale back centuries-let alone millennia.

    Quick follow-up re: the height thing--all of the historical knight armor that I've seen (in Canadian museums and whatnot, which means they're most likely English) are proportioned for shorties (well, shorter than modern average--5'6-5'8 or ~170cm)... is that because rich people were shorter than commoners? Was height seen as a sign of barbaric ancestry or some such? Is height a sign of German heritage or something else that made tall English folk incapable of knighthood for tangential reasons? Or did England just send their kids' second-hand armor to the colonies while keeping all the adult-sized sets for themselves?

    • @jonharker9028
      @jonharker9028 Год назад

      it’s been a few years, but this is an interesting question.
      Armour made for teenagers was definitely a thing, if you were rich enough. Since squires could be as young as fourteen, and some nobility would make armour for kids younger than that age, it wouldn’t be uncommon for a suit of armour made upon squiring to be too small by the time the same warrior is in their early twenties. And if you’re wealthy enough to make multiple full harnesses of plate, you’ll keep the old ones for posterity and because they’re still status symbols.
      That said, height averages varied over the centuries-most obviously declining with the Industrial Revolution, but also during periods of famine or in areas with insufficient nutritious food (like a definite reliance on rice in much of Japan’s history, due to various impacts like those on fishing and the viability of transporting fish meat). We also have to account for the fact that some museums don’t know enough about the intended wearers of surviving plate harnesses to know for sure that they’re being arranged properly. It wasn’t common knowledge two hundred years ago that Henry VIII of England was 188 cm tall (since he lived three hundred years before then), even if you could see how big some parts of his suits of armour were.
      I hope this covers all the relevant points of interest, and perhaps prompts further investigation.

    What is the best weapon, (preferably sword...) for a VERY strong person? I can personally handle something like a claymore similar to what another person could wield a bastard sword, and I really wanna find my "me" weapon for sparring practice.
