    I was desperately looking for something like that :)
    (most references are really bad and overposed)
    Update: Bought em. Looked through the pack.
    Totally worth the every penny.
    Many different angles for poses.
    400 pics in total.
    Can definately recommend. :)

    I always figured that spartans would look like an asymmetrical Olympic wrestler, possibly with more body fat because they didn´t have to care about weight classes.

    • @John2r1
      @John2r1 6 лет назад +2

      Björn Brox actually they ate very much the same types of foods as modern athletes . And they restricted the amount of food they ate.
      Plus their physical training was fairly similar to modern Military physical training mixed with Olympic athlete training.
      So they where probably similar to the ideal soldiers of any modern military. Oh and the video creator should look up what a hoplite is because they were specifically heavy infantry.
      And he apparently missed the part of history that saids the Spartans used their shields as weapons in close combat.
      And he ignores the factor of physical training outside of combat. Just saying.

    At the core of all ancient training was wrestling, with all the strength training that goes with it like carrying and throwing stones and so on (as evidence even in some later medieval depictions of knights training), and they did trek around in full gear, so I always just figured that they looked like strong wrestlers -- 11-14% bodyfat, relatively big, but not really too bulky, and strong as shit.

    I have to disagree on this. Having an unbalanced body causes major problems for your joint. I had to quit rowing because we got a trainer that had no idea what he was doing and I got a chronic inflammation. So for more than 10 years now, I have problems using my right shoulder for anything more taxing than throwing a Frisbee. And all it took was 11 months under this trainer.
    So unless there is evidence for asymmetrical muscularity in hoplites, I would say ancient Greeks were smart enough to develop a healthy body.

  • @Ounouh

    Describing your enemy as muscular (after the fight) serves two purposes: if you win, your victory is even more glorious. If you lose, well at least you did not lose an army of skimpy nerds. Even the commanders of Roman armies described the tribes they fought as huge, ferocious, and numerous meanwhile the result of the fight that they without significant losses to their force. There's no glory in reporting your war campaigns that you beat outnumbered, poorly equipped and disorganized tribe of barbarians. So even when the first hand reports on the enemy is the best, it's also the most biased source.

    There are also reports that Spartans were trained into ambidexterity. Makes sense to me, the shield would be the best work out for mass, then spear/sword-thingy for reposte and thrust.

  • @jowolf2187

    Strength and muscle definition are very different. For example, a body builder will have defined muscles that they gained likely gained through specific means or chemical means. Meanwhile a strongman will have more natural musculature that will not be as defined and yet will likely be much stronger than a bodybuilder.

    Back in school in history class my teacher told us, that roman gladiators in fact tended to be a little chubby. He said, that this was on purpose, to minimize bloodloss when cut, because fat tissue wouldn't bleed as much, as muscle tissue would. And the Romans would have had a great interest in keeping their gladiators alive (because they were like rockstars back in the day), so they would provide their gladiators with foods, that would maintain this fat layer.
    I tended to believe this, because my history teacher usually was really reliable. But unfortunately I can't provide any sources.
    What do you think of this "theory"? Might it be true? Could it apply to (real war-) soldiers (and maybe other nations and cultures) as well?

    • @SnapJelly
      @SnapJelly  7 лет назад +10

      I've read that before somewhere on a website but I've never read any ancient texts about gladiators.
      but I would say I think it's very likely even if not intentional, you need to be reeeaallly skinny in you want to see your muscles and I think they did not have enough knowlege about nutrition to achieve this purposefully.
      so simply for them to stay healthy they would have to eat well and likely pack on a few extra pounds.

    Im sorry but ancient greek statues weren't purely imagination, people say Romans were realistic and yet, they portrayed muscular men in statues. There is the pankration statue which i doubt is not based on persons that lived. Maybe the gods weren't based on actual persons but the ones that are suppose to represent historical persons like alexander i think is true to the physical look of the actual person

      Kieran Fitzgerald more like high level modern soldiers ie special forces kind of look physically speaking.
      And yes modern soldiers do train like athletes physically speaking . The difference we use weapons in our job. And it's more of a full body training designed to create someone who is an all around athlete . Capable of running, lifting weights , boxing , wrestling or MMA style fighting .. modern combatives does have elements of several fighting styles in it.
      So Spartans probably looked like peak modern soldiers. In a time when all the other "hoplite armies " where citizen militias.

    It is worth adding that aesthetics and body image were very important to the Greeks, the Gymnasium where they exercised naked was an important part of (male) lives. They wouldn't look like bodybuilders because speed was as important as strength but they would try to look symmetrical and they would aspire to look "ripped"

    I have read some archeology reports claiming gladiators were fed a puffed wheat based grool that promoted HGH production. There are currently several fermented bean/soy/rice diet that can possibly fit into an HGH promoting diet. Considering the warrior class rule in Sparta that is claimed to have been, wouldn't this promote highly vascular and massive bodied athletes? Fish, fowl, red meat...plenty of greens. And THAT GROOL. Yumm. ;)

    These men of Sparta weren't just soldiers, in time of peace the Spartans actually had jobs to help contribute to the community. Thought I do believe they would be somewhat muscular, because let's be honest the ancient way of life was not easy, most of them were probably farmers, architects, or sculptures, the beautiful and best part of Greek culture in that time.

    I think that they'd look good, because well i think it's silly to assume that they wouldn't care about aesthetics and that they'd like having muscle imbalances and look deformed. Also they'd maybe not have 6 packs, but they'd look similar to how strong men look like when even if they are fatter, their abdomen is just very developed and you can still see some muscles. Ofc it would vary from person to person, but that's how i imagine a spartan would look like, since well strength has always been something sought after especially by warriors and as you said, being big would actually be an advantage on the battlefield so yeah, that's how i think they looked, kinda like how people look in modern strong men competitions. One more thing, you say that they didn't eat that well, are you sure about that? Imo, there were less people back then so more food should have been available even just from nature. And the spartan soldiers should have been well fed because as they say, an army marches on it's belly.

      I did ancient history in High school (This was a few years ago and it was only highschool mind you so I'm not claiming to be any leading source of undoubted fact) but from memory all the old history books they had us read out of at the fancy state library we went on field trips to, claimed that Spartan's were supposedly very minimalistic and functional and only ate as much as they needed and preferred not to indulge in the ways that Athenians for example would have. But I could be remembering wrong, it's just my thoughts on the subject.

    Spartans wore bronze armor, and I think bronze armor is fairly heavy. So Spartans had to be strong enough to wear the armor and fight at the same time. Spartans probably had a weight requirement like any elite organized army would.

    The word "Spartan" doesn't just refer to the Greek warriors. Today it also means something that is very basic, or very spare: "That man lived a Spartan lifestyle." And in reference to your comments about their diets, SnapJelly, from what I've heard, their diets were VERY basic. One of their main favorites (at least, from what I've heard) was something called "Black Soup", which was basically just animal blood and animal livers mixed together into a soup. Very basic, yet probably very nutritious.

    No bodybuilder would last 10 minutes in an ancient battle. With all of that muscle they would get tired very quickly, as well as being too slow. No doubt the Spartan warriors were very strong and very athletic because of their hard training regimen, more like a special forces or navy seals of today. So they probably had athletic muscles rather than bulky ones. 6 packs? Absolutly.

      John Doe they weren’t that tall honestly they were average height

    • @John2r1
      @John2r1 6 лет назад

      Corey Asbury true the average height of a Spartan was around 5'7" in height. Which is tall for the time but not Giants . Your average Greek male was around 5'4" to 5'5" . The reasons why Spartan males could be just a little taller than average is simply diet and exercise. They actually ate pretty much the same kinds of foods that an athlete today would eat. And obviously spent a lot of time working out and training as that was all they where allowed to do according to Spartan law.
      Btw the women of Sparta ran the household. The men where stationed in Military barricks until age 30 and even after they could go home they where expected to show up for regular training , work out and other events. ( Spartan training did include sports like the rest of Greece at the time. )
      They were constantly watched by other Spartans and could lose their citizenship if they neglected their duties as citizens.

    You don't need to have the best nutrition to have a 6 pack, today we can eat whatever we want, whenever we want and how much we want. I'm sure things were plentiful back then also but they don't have a lot of the trash foods we have today. However one factor contributing to fat would be how much carbs they ate, if they ate carbs often it's more probable they could have gained fat

    Spartans all had six packs. Michael Phelps trains all day and eats more than 10000 calories a day abd is still ripped. Spartans trained just as hard. Slept outside in the cold therefore burning even more fat, and barely ate enough. An excerpt of gladiators from China talks about how the gladiators from China were so sinewy, muscular, and defined they looked as if they were a block of muscle because of their intense training from such a young age.

  • @John2r1
    @John2r1 6 лет назад +1

    I personally never perscrubed to the ideal of all Spartans being ripped like body builder's.
    However they where physically fit. Their physical training was in all likelihood very similar to modern Military PT.
    You mentioned wrestling as something they did which is true but they also practiced an ancient form of mixed martial arts. Which does require core strength. Just as modern Military combative require core strength.
    As for their diet well the Spartans actually had a diet that Olympic athletes today would and do use.
    www.livestrong.com/article/301857-spartan-300-diet/
    That link has the kinds of foods they would eat.
    The Spartan national dish was blood soup. Which is effective pigs blood or cows blood boiled into a soup with some meat , vegetables and a bit of nature whet floor to thicken it up.
    And they never ate to the point that they were actually full. They ate small meals packed with proteins , carbs and fiber . The exact kind of food that an Olympic athlete or soldier who cares about being fit would eat.
    So Spartans probably looked like the idea soldier or Special Forces operators would look like.
    Not all would have abs but they would be strong. As for the shield if you ever used an Aspis it's actually not that difficult to hold it with your arm bent. So they likely held it in whatever way they needed to. Depending on the situation.
    Oh and it doesn't take physical fitness to stand in formation. It takes discipline to stand and fight in a formation.
    Oh and your ideal of what they looked like has to be a joke. I mean seriously they didn't carry their shields in one position all the time, they had pt which is generally designed to work every muscle group in your body. They wouldn't have looked any different than modern soldiers. Armor and weapons aside.

    Its very simple.
    Some Spartans were very muscular.
    They live a very physical lifestyle.
    And that would have made fit and ripped.
    But there was also a personal consideration.
    Some would have been more ripped than others.
    Because that was their personal make up.
    As far as not having great nutrition...not true.
    The spartan citizens were an upper class.
    And spata was one of the most fertile sections
    of greece. Also they hunted, There was plenty
    of food available to them.

    Who's to say they wouldn't work to fix imbalances? I don't know about ancient fitness training but modern athletes, fighters and soldiers certainly try to fix imbalances because they leave you more prone to injury. Given their ab armour Spartans clearly had a strong sense of aesthetics too where symmetry is very important. Furthermore they wouldn't be trained to fight with only one weapon system and grappling especially requires full body strength. 7kg on the traps is also pretty trivial, it's about the same force as wearing a 30lb backpack, the traps wouldn't be the first muscle to fatigue.

    • @SnapJelly
      @SnapJelly  7 лет назад

      maybe they tried fixing imbalances but in some extreme cases having imbalances can benefit you, maintaining muscle requires a lot of food and more energy goes to maintaining muscle that you might not use as much.
      and imbalances are very easy to get, especially if things like carrying your shield is just normal every day bussiness

    • @cadeyrndragheim22
      @cadeyrndragheim22 7 лет назад

      Yeah i also think they would work to fix the imbalances. Obviously they cared about how they looked, otherwise we'd never see statues representing gods who had a figure most would try to attain, imo. As i sad in a comment on this video, i think they'd look similar to how modern strong men do (those without steroids anyway), with some having visible abs behind some fat.

    • @JimGiant
      @JimGiant 7 лет назад

      Wouldn't this go against your premise that they weren't ultra lean? (which I agree with).
      Getting an average modern guy to hold a 7kg shield for an hour a day would lead to imbalances but for a well trained soldier it's endurance work and wouldn't stimulate a noticeable amount of hypertrophy, especially not in the traps.

  • @Sunny-ld4nn

  • @theaussiebogan9680
    @theaussiebogan9680 6 лет назад

    I would guess spartans and most ancient warriors in general would be around 10-12% body fat. At that point, a person is almost at their maximum strength but the lowered fat percent allows greater endurance and stamina, as well as being healthy in general. At this point, the abs are visible but not incredibly defined. I would agree with snapjelly that muscle imbalances would probably be common. HOWEVER it would not be as extreme as you surmised. Greeks were quite a vain people and they did have specialised exercise areas and such, and well developed and symmetrical muscles were prized. I would guess they would work on the muscles not used in combat for the sake of aesthetics

    After watching this video, Im wondering if anyone here has any workout routines or something to build muscle strength for different types of fighting? I already do some Archery ones, though I could use more of those... I'd like to build up my strength for when I do fighting :D And perhaps Snap Jelly could do a video on what muscles are used for different weapons if he hasn't already? XD That would be cool to see uwu

    they just trained, back then. theater and training - that's what u'd spent most of your free time with, back then. As a free citizen. In most citystates, anyway...
    Otherwise, I agree. Fat will help protect some of your vital spots (a bit) from fast/superficial cuts.
    Also, a lot of people would've trained just for the olympics.
    The awards granted to the winner were quiet...noteworthy.

    Okay... since I'm 47 years old GREEK... and my half origin FROM SPARTA... and it happens to be a SUPER HISTORY FREAK...
    ...let me explain to you about the Spartans, or to be MORE ACCURATE... for the "Lacedaimonians" (that's why during Peloponnese War they adopted the "L" for their National Symbol, otherwise would be... a "S", right?)
    Spartans/Lacedaimonians were starting their training ("Agogi") at the age of 5. Their training was pretty much like US Marines (actually far-far worst and toughest), but the MAIN "difference" for them (comparing with modern warfare) was... their SUPER-POOR FOOD!!!! They actually starving to death! And they've been encourage to STEALING FOOD (from houses) to fill their meals.
    So, actually, they had FEW/LITTLE FOOD to eat (to become more tough troops), a lot calories food though ("Melanas Zomos" or if you like "Black Soup") - was few pork meat pieces boiled into the pig's blood !!! That was the ONLY food they were giving to them!
    So... actually... these first humans PROFESSIONAL soldiers would look like more like... 400-800m runners in the Olympics and not like the... bodybuilders in "300" movie - which is totally inaccurate, since Miller had/has the most minimum historic knowledge for Ancient Greece (he simply saw the statue of Leonidas in Greece, asked a bit for the story and he made up the most of his comic's scenario, which "300" movie is based on)... Meaning, they would look like VERY THIN, WITH FEW BODY FAT, LOT MUSCLES (but not big ones), hard bodies, lot scars (since the daily punishment was flogging!), etc...

      maybe they did that with boys to make them fiercer, but once they entered the hoplite ranks i think they would receive proper food.

    • @John2r1
      @John2r1 6 лет назад +2

      ARX 351 once they became soldiers or hoplites they joined a communal mess with other soldiers . And it was still costumary to not over eat . And besides that they probably couldn't eat to much due to their apatites being designed by their child hood to eat small meals. And there is a list of foods each Spartan hoplite had to contribute to the mess or dinning hall.

    I'm sure they did. The food wasn't laden with sugar and preservatives like everything now these days. They are inspected and expected to be physically fit; the Spartans who didn't pass were publicly shamed. All those games, exercises such as wrestling, and fighting drills, I'm sure melted all the fat from them.

    Were there left handed warriors in Ancient Greek times?

    • @cadeyrndragheim22
      @cadeyrndragheim22 7 лет назад +1

      I just know that in the roman times the left hand was viewed as bad or smthg, so they did everything with the right, most likely all their troops were right-handed or forced to fight right-handed. They're pretty close so maybe this was a similar thing, but not sure. They would be a bit out of place in a formation though, probably the only part where they'd be allowed to be in would be the left side.

    The sum of this video is. Do we know Spartans were athletic? Yes this is not even debatable we know that both Spartan men and women were athletic. Can we be sure all had six pack? We don t know but it is probable because of their consistent training. Saying some Spartans had but not all is not a middle position it s just plain stupid because there is no way that you can prove that they had or had not. It s even probable no Spartan having a 6 pack and this also is not covered by your "some had but not all" approach

    I can't picture your ethnicity properly. I'd say you look both Russian (Slavic) and German, but the thing is, you don't sound German. So I'd have to say Check/ Slovak. They're Slavic people who are closely related to the Germanic people, but whose language retains more Slavic elements than Germanic ones.

    ypu analysis of what muacles they uses for certain movements is simplistic at best and completely wrong. you are not aware which muscle does what. migh want to review the levator scapulae, the brachioradialis, the quadratus lomborum just to name the few. you really need a more complete understanding of biomechanics before you make declarations on these issues.
