  • Please don't mind the kid with the most loudest and really annoying air horn when the trains came through and pulled in. I went up for the Comet Cars which were supposed to show up at 12:20pm into Fullerton but the set ended up being 2 hours delayed due to 573 hitting a trespasser at the Encinitas station. 573 left Solana Beach at 10:45am like usual and apparently hit the person at 10:50am which made the set 2 hours behind. I was surprised how Amtrak managed to clean the set and get it back out on 580 at the scheduled departure time of 3:10pm out of Los Angeles Union Station. The Comet Coaches set showed up north on 573 at 2pm and the dispatch changed them to track 1 since the train was 2 hours delayed and there was an Oceanside bound Metrolink that pulls in at 2pm. Dash 8 503 leading on the northbound trip 573 and 509 was leading on 580 south. I finally caught the Comet Cars. Here is Amtrak Pacific Surfliner train 573 the San Diego to Los Angeles Union Station service with Dash 8 unit 503 leading 6 Comet Coaches and Dash 8 unit 509 on the back of the train. I never thought I would see 2 dash 8 units on one set. The Comet Coaches was built between 1968 to 1969 in Saint Louis Missouri as Jersey Arrow EMU's by the Saint Louis Car Company and the coaches were overhauled from 2011 to 2013 in Beech Grove Indiana as California Comet Coaches by Amtrak San Joaquin service. This equipment is borrowed equipment from the San Joaquin service train to keep up with the ridership down on the Pacific Surfliner. The Pacific Surfliner is the 2nd busiest rail corridor in the country behind the Northeast corridor. Dash 8 unit 503 sounded great. The next video is the trip report Fullerton to Solana Beach with a good sunset.
