THIS STORY:
On June 21, 1920, Ruth Wanderer was shot dead by a raggedy dressed stranger in the foyer of her two-flat home at 4732 N. Campbell Ave. in Chicago. Ruth’s husband, Carl, explained that the couple was returning from a movie and was ambushed by a 'ragged stranger.' The hold-up man shot Ruth, killing her and her unborn child, while Carl pulled out a gun and killed the stranger.
At first, Carl was lauded as a hero. But the cops had their suspicions, even though Wanderer was a decorated veteran of World War I. The strangers gun belonged to Carl's relative. Ruth had taken a large sum of money out of the bank that very morning. And a young 17 year-old girl stated that she and Carl had gone on a few dates before the murders.
Finally Carl confessed, saying he was tired of his wife and wanted to go back into the Army. He was tried for both murders and was hung in 1921.

Perhaps the remains could be exhumed, DNA samples taken, and then entered into a database where family could be discovered and then his name restored -- solving a family's mystery in the process ('cousin so-and-so disappeared and nothing was ever heard from him again,' etc). You never know. Might such a move be worth it? That way an actual name could be on that new stone instead of having to re-do it right after you get one.

Oh Ron is a stand up guy and has showed us all the gravestones / statues he has helped get placed from this wonderful and amazing group and he as well ..I am so happy with this group...its a sad story but Ron always tries to find a brighter side to the forgotten stories♡

Very interesting story. Carl was a bad man. Killing 3, the raggedy man, his wife, and unborn child. Why didn't he just leave if he was so unhappy? I feel sorry for the innocent people that were murdered. Brittain and Ron did an awesome job on this vidio. Brittain has so much knowledge of historical facts.Hes amazing. Carl presumably wanted to stay in the neighbourhood and to continue working at the butchers. Societal pressures to stop men deserting their wives were very strong then.

I’ve watched many of your videos. Many have touched my heart and I got teary . None of them touched me like this one. The way you told it…. I cried and I felt like I knew them all. I imagined holding my pregnant daughter as she died. I imagined the ragged stranger was dirty and hungry the day before but he had been prepaid and was able to pay for his shave and hair cut. He was desperate and probably had a good meal. He did what he did to survive but was unknowingly preparing for his own death. I imagined trying desperately to hold on to that wedding ring, and at last I imagined the nursery. How can one man cause so much devastation! You really took us back to that day. Thank you. You are an amazing story teller/person. I hope you know this. Thank you for ALL you do. 🕰 ❤️🔍

It seems if the photo had been shown around somebody would have known this man probably still now after this long time yes circulated someone might recognize him he was a young man maybe they're were other family members close back then life was rough during that. Family members left and started life early .There were food rations no places to live. someone was bound to know this young man. He is with the Lord and the Lord knows who he is even if we don't.The husband should have been charged with double murder .He killed his baby also when he killed his wife. Amen.

Ron, I was just thinking, could the Ragged Stranger be exhumed and his DNA be tested to see if he can finally be identified? If this possible, maybe you should wait to get his gravestone so his name can be engraved on the stone. Great video as always from our Master Storyteller Ron. 💟

With early 20th century burials (and before) usually done with the wooden coffins, it is next to impossible to successfully probe or exhume a corpse because the wood and body decomposes and becomes part of the earth surrounding it. only the rubber heels of the shoes survive intact for centuries.

Wow! I had no idea about the Ben Hecht connection. He was one of the great writers of the twentieth century. A lot of films and collaborated with Charlie MacArthur on the theatre plays "The Front Page" and "Twentieth Century".

She was very pretty and so sad to be killed with her unborn baby. Also so glad you have the grave of the "Ragged Stranger", hope he is given a name like the red headed freckle raced Irish lad. RIP to all and also that you have his photo even if post mortem and are getting a grave stone.

Sad they didn’t acknowledge Ruth Anna baby on her grave. Especially since those were her last word’s. The fact she wouldn’t release her wedding ring says how much she loved her husband.
The red headed homeless man hurt my heart. He was so young as well and just got suckered. I’m happy he has a grave stone now but his family deserves to know if anyone is alive. I wonder if he was Irish? 🤔

Ruth's first thought in that circumstance being for her unborn child, seems like she would have been a wonderful mother...and what a jerk (understatement) Carl was, having to get in that last dig at Ruth's mother. I did enjoy the use of music in this video. Even if the song was inspired by Carl...really gives you a feel for the time period.

I love history stuff it's boring to most but interesting and and intriguing to me and never boring. Is why I love hearing and researching these stories . Because of my 6'Th Grade teacher loved history and got me into it when I was 12 in (1992). And 30 years later in (2022) I still love historical educational stuff like this.

Great story! I love stories from the 1890 thru the 1920s!! I live in a neighborhood called old Louisville, the largest collection of brick Victorian houses and residential stain glass in the country! We have a ghost story concerning the Duponts and a mistress who shot her lover. Supposedly people will hear the sound of shots around this house..Spooky. Lots of ghost stories around here! You inspired me to find the original owners of the house I live in! The were the family Wolff who lived in my house in 1890. I found their graves in the oldest Jewish Cemetery in Louisville! They were both born in the 1840's!! It was great finding the "Faces of the Forgotten" who originally lived in my house 132 years ago!!! Thanks for the inspiration Ron!!!

U we're in my neck of the woods LMAO having grown up by Western n Addison!!! Thanks for the memories.....especially the fact that my late husband Marc also used to go there religiously as a teen, and we met in the old neighborhood after literally growing up blocks from each other but not meeting till 1991 LMAO!! Such a terrific collaboration. So sad that 3 innocent people died all from this one evil man's vicious plot to keep from having to pay alimony and child support if they even did that back then. I feel for the Mother who embraced her daughter while she died. How horrible.

A heartbreaking multi-level tragedy so beautifully told, with immense thanks to Ron and Britton. This story merely reinforces my personal belief that some people are born evil. Not so our Ragged Stranger who was young, down on his luck, and perhaps easily influenced. I do so wish the Ragged Stranger could be identified via DNA testing. The Theatre is a work of art beginning with the exquisite exterior to the carpet, Art Deco lettering, etc. A beautiful restoration with interesting artifacts. May Ruth Anna, her unborn child, parents and siblings continue to enjoy the rewards of Paradise and Rest In Peace Forevermore. 🙏
Britton always has some unique and interesting stories. Always enjoy it when y’all do a story together. I’m glad that you’re getting “the ragged stranger” a headstone. Just such a sad story. A person would have to be exceptionally heartless to not only kill his wife but also kill his own unborn child. Glad they hung him and I hope it was a long, drawn out, exquisitely painful, slow strangulation so he had several long minutes to reflect on what he did and Ruth Anna’s face was before him the whole time he was dying.
Thank you Ron and Britton for bringing attention to Ruth Anne's story, and for the sympathy shown to The Ragged Stranger as well. It still amazes me that Arrogant, greedy people think that they can get away with their crimes.. I hope Carl Wanderer is still paying in Hell for killing his wife and unborn child, and duping an innocent man into participating in their murder, then immediately killing the stranger in the aftermath. What a Monster Carl Wanderer was...his young mistress is lucky to have not been harmed by this creep.

I so enjoyed this episode Ron! A fascinating story. So cool how you and Brittan took us to see the art deco theater, then the residence where the murder took place, we took a step back in time. Carl was a creep to the very end. I felt so sad for the loss of Ruth Anna and her baby, just a senseless, brutal end. Her mother literally witnessed her last moments too!💔. The reporter from the local newspaper was a key factor in solving this crime! Pretty cool. That music was a great addition to the telling of this story, how in the world did you find it?. You and Brittan make a dynamic duo, you are both so knowledgeable! I agree about the poor guy on the street- a down on his luck kid who fell for Carl's plot. So moving that you asked to find the ragged stranger's unmarked grave. You have a great heart Ron!💜💙

I love the cases on the 20's, 30's. I think of how the 👮 solved crimes, & how much longer they take to crack back then. They didn't have the technology we have today. I read about this in a book about infamous murders about Chicago. I did not know they lived in the Lincoln Square neighborhood. I frequent the area quite a bit.
